Quick, short game to satisfy casual gamers who just want something stress free to play and advance without frustration.
It's quite eventful - lot of twists and action, not much sense in the game logic, but for a hidden object game, not a bad entry.
9 Clues: The Secret of Serpent Creek is another point and click game released by Artifex Mundi, and I must say I had a lot of fun with it! First of all, I thought the game's characters looked a bit wonky at first, with their weird teeth and eyes, but as I got into the game I realised the game and history was awesome! Even though the game was trivial, the story was really exciting, maybe even a little bit scary. To avoid telling to much, I recommend this game.
Note to self: You, the detective is in Snake Creek to look for your missing friend, who is a reporter for a magazine. Even at first glance, and just a minute into the game you feel something is off and not right.
9 Clues: The Secret of the Serpent Creek was a game published by Artifex Mundi back in 2013. If you count from the year I played this minus its origin, the span is 11 years. This game has been out for 11 years and still delivered beyond its capabilities.
The story felt very simple but the voice acting was phenomenal, specially for the main characters. I believe this is what painted the story in such fascinating light. The accents in the voice acting brought its characters to life. There is really not much to mention that stood out from the game besides the voice-acting and a small design change for dialogues. This design change is the dialogue with the NPCs: they come in square chat bubbles, not the usual upper subtitle. This change felt like a breath of fresh air, even for a game from 11 years ago.
A 100% run in one playthrough is feasible as well, but keep in mind that small errors may cause your run and not getting to 100% achievements. This happened to me but I managed to run another playthrough to fulfill the minor errors. I ended up with only a little over two hours for full completion (in consideration of having no side stories for this game), two full hours if you simply count without the 100% completion. For a two-hour playthrough of the game, it is a good piece of nostalgia for throwback. I would definitely recommend this game, rating it a defined 7.5/10.
Liked it.
One of my favourite Artifex Mundi distributed games. Sort of great in the same way you would consider 'Killer Klowns from Outer Space' or 'Troll 2' to be. It's a fun guilty pleasure with very casual and easy going game play that will have me coming back to it again and again
9 Clues: The Secret of Serpent Creek is one of the two 9 clues series game along with 9 Clues 2: The Ward. It's your basic point & click, mystery adventure game with decent amount of hidden object scenes and puzzles.
Plot summary - Detective mystery horror drama story plays in 1950's United States of America style of place with the sounds, looks and feel. Paranormal private investigator (You as a player) is contacted by her famous reporter friend Helen Hunter who is in great danger, sending voicemail to you where she sounds terrified and afraid. You are set on an adventure to a coastal town of Serpent Creek, name tells you also what this is all about, snakes everywhere. You soon notice that all the city folks are hypnotized or drugged of some sort and seem to be just sleepwalking like zombies while town ground is shaken with violent tremors. You meet with Mayor Alister Braminus, who seems to be little bit odd. You are unsure if you could trust him, which you will find out later to be true. It's your basic solve mystery, chase the bad guy and make things right type of plot.
Game features include 13 mini games, 19 achievements and various locations throughout the map. I played this on advanced mode. The plot itself in my opinion was okay, i don't think it was anything extraordinary compared to other games like this, but it was interesting enough to keep me entertained without skipping the cut scenes. Puzzles were way too easy for me, but i have played many games like these so you kinda get the hint of the mini games since they are pretty similar across the genre. Same lock picking puzzle repeats multiple times throughout game. Other mini games were variety of basic puzzles you see in this type of games. I didn't notice any major glitches or mistakes in the game play. Hidden objects scenes were average and straight forward. You have your typical map for fast moving from place to place and journal with notes and clues, but unlike some other games you don't have extra chapter after completing the game.
Artwork is decent, i don't think it's as pretty as you see in Enigmatis, Grim Legends or some other Artifex Mundi games, graphics are okay. I was surprised by the quality of voice acting and music in general. Typically you might not get any good quality voice acting or acting at all in some. Actors had some tone and emphasis in their talk, not monotonic and boring. Just to clarify, i compare this to other games of the same genre and games with fairly small budget. Of course it's not going to be just as good as bigger game companies and their games, but that's beside the point here.
As what comes to achievements they are achievable in one game play and there is 19 of them. They are easy to get in my opinion even tho some of them include doing puzzles in short amount of time or not using skip button. Some of them are easily missed like Clue collector achievement, since if you don't get the museum question mark before police stops you entering there, you can't unlock the achievement. I play games like these mostly because they entertain me couple hours and i like to do complete games to my name, so i think it's a positive thing that you don't need to play game multiple times to get all the achievements. Just be careful when playing that you have checked all the achievements beforehand so you don't miss anything along the way.
I would recommend this game if you want 3 to 5 hours of decent entertainment, but i wouldn't pay full price from this it being 14,79 euros (16,55 USD). Luckily i got it from sale and i think it's prolly going to be on sale every now and then.
Pros
• Good voice acting
• Decent amount of puzzles
• Map
• Difficulty levels
• Achievements can be collected in one game play
• Smooth controls
Cons
• Expensive for the length of the game
• Artwork isn't my favorite
• No extra chapter after completing the game
• Easy to miss achievements if you are not careful
