A very fun and humorous metroidvania style game that should take less than 10 hours to beat. I thoroughly enjoyed my time killing morgs, defeating evil wizards, and searching for a lost kitty.
GREAT! Similar to Unepic with the humor, plays more like axiom verge 2 I think…I bought this game on Xbox and again on steam, I haven’t even gotten too far, but I enjoy it so much. Again I’m late to the party, but I really feel that this game is something special, and everyone who likes metroidvanias with silly dialogue should play this!
An irreverent metroidvania. Some interesting mechanics. Combat feels ......OK..... seems a bit stiff, but still good.
A really solid metroidvania. The writing was charming and it had a lot of strong and creative ideas. Difficulty is not massively hard (although the last boss took me many attempts). You can tell a lot of passion went into this game, and it stands out as one of the more enjoyable metroidvanias I've played. Definitely would recommend
It may not look that amazing in screenshots but it is a great metroidvania game.
You have 3 characters you can swap between like in Astalon: Tears of the Earth. Each has their unique dodge mechanic and different stats, but all of them share level and gear which makes it already better than Astalon.
The magic system is kind of weird as you have to stand still to cast fireballs that will then auto aim, but most of the time they lock onto stuff you don't want to target and it's main use is standing on ledges and shooting enemies below you.
The Humor in this game is great! Everyone has weird deformed faces and constant snarky dialogue. Your weapons play voice clips when equipped, such as "Just a glorified prison shank".
Highly recommend especially for a price that low.
Originally for the XBox360's indie games platform, this is the perfect parody of the Metroidvania genre, and a must-have for those who like that genre.
Very funny storyline, also has a lot of action and a bit of magic, and there's fireballs, fireballs are cool.
Vastly underrated, virtually unknown metroidvania that I'd like to think would someday get a sequel. I'm aware of Symphony of the Night, etc. now, but this is the game that introduced me to the genre(I'm a late bloomer, and came across it in an Indie Royale bundle many years ago before that site went on indefinite hiatus.
My main warning would be that there are 2 or 3 boss battles that, at the time of my entire playthrough of this game, seemed infuriatingly cheap. The one apparently called the Red Mage probably took me over 30 attempts to beat.
Some dislike the "floaty" aspect of the controls, but this is something I seem to prefer, or at least don't mind.
Precious few games, especially in the west, have a badass, weaponless, and agile chick in a leotard as a playable character, but this is one of them, giving her the name Vienna; she/the story remind me a lot of a series I've been working on for ages(and will surely be a significant influence in the end.) The three protagonists exchange great sarcastic quips throughout, and various tropes from games/fantasy are cleverly brought up here and there. The graphics are pixellated in such a way to faithfully recreate many aspects of SotN and other MVs of that time period.
Combos can be pretty cool in this, especially with Vienna; she fights with her hands and feet(including some special moves you earn with her as you progress,) while the other two use various weapons you can find along the way. All can use magic, however.
Sadly, it's been so long and this is such an overlooked gem that I doubt we'll see a sequel, though the ending certainly allows for that possibility. Somehow, this one plays top-notch in my book, even now as someone far more aware of what so many of the classic metroidvanias are.
Lots of fun and I personally find this hilarious and the characters are surprisingly well written. If you don't like the excessive dialogue, there's an option to turn that off, too. Love the mechanic of using different characters with different abilities to progress and tackle certain bosses and enemies in different way. Same goes for leveling up and finding weapons, armor and accessories through exploration instead of grinding.
The only cons I can think of is that the controls can be somewhat clunky because you're locked into some of the attack animations and can't cancel out of slides or dodges, and jumps carry horizontal momentum, limiting your ability to turn around in mid air. There should be a visual tell for false walls like Hyper Light Drifter's symbols that show the more observant player where secrets are.
no settings for adjusting the controls, of which the default ones are awful and make no sense. You either have to start a new game or set up new keybindings on load, which is shit because you can't test if they'll be any good in game and change them on the fly.
No settings menu at all that I could find for that matter.
It's one of the ugliest games I've ever played, honestly. The main character also looks like the same dude from Dungeons of Dredmor and there's some art style overlap - maybe the same person, idk. But regardless, it feels really unpolished and unpleasant to look at.
Combat is what it is, nothing special or memorable. Pain in the arse with the default control setup.
It's just a game. I don't know how it copped a 9/10 in multiple places. It's decidedly average and barely above a student project.
Bit over 5 hours to finish the game with 99% items found and map explored.
A fun, quirky Metroidvania in a light fantasy setting. With three characters that each gets their own "pass this obstacle you couldn't pass before"-move, you have to switch between them at times and can't just use your favorite character exclusively. This might annoy some, but I thought it good that the game forces you to use all of them at least a bit. Some boss fights need to be fought with specific characters as well because of this.
Certainly worth the $3.
I need to leave more positive reviews on games I liked. This is one of them.
Sure, the artwork is weird, but it grows on you. The humor is pretty great at times. However, most importantly, this game has it where it counts, gameplay. One of the better metroidvanias on Steam still to this day, and it's unique traits are genuinely cool. Each character has strengths and weaknesses, as well as movement.
All in all, if you like metroidvanias, you will enjoy this game.
I found myself having a little fun with it at first. But there are a number of design decisions that I don't agree with.
This game desperately needed a character hot-swap for what they were trying to do (turn the metroidvania gates into character specific obsticles). Instead you end up doing a deeply tiring amount of backtracking.
Every gated area I encountered required a party member I wasn't using. So I'd have to go back to the start of the level, switch characters, go all the way back, clear the room, go all the way back, get the character I wanted to play, go all the way back, check the next room and find out it requires the other OTHER character I wasn't using.
There are some other concerns for me too: combat clunkiness, player character balance issues and hit-every-wall-for-secret-doors-syndrome. But the game's major selling angle was the humor. And mostly it didn't really land with me.
A fantastic metroidvania all around! Everything about this game is well done: Kickass music, lovely graphics, and great writing with the perfect smattering of humor throughout. Just the right amount of powerups and collectibles while also not too hard and not too easy, but very well balanced.
I enjoyed my time playing this game way more then I thought I would. The story is funny to most everyone but it is even funnier if you have play a good or bad game of D&D.
You have three characters to chose from but given the type of game this is I was stuck playing the monkish acrobat as she has the best movement out of the three. You don't gain exp but do level up throughout the game with orbs you find across the map. These affect all three of the characters so no worries about the times you are forced to use the one you don't like.
I played the game with a controller but not a Xbox controller. I did have to change the commands though. But you CAN change the commands, which is something some devs overlook.
This game is a fun ride but very short for a Meroidvania style game.
Bottom line is that if you want a light-hearted Meroidvania romp through a game world that you will never see again, give this game the time of day it needs to show you its best and worse.

An extremely solid indie game in a genre I love, Magicians & Looters is a pretty easy game to recommend. At its core it's a platformer with (small-ish) sprawling, fully backtrackable levels (all the better to go hunt for any missing treasure) and lots of combat and exploration. The levels start out pretty linear but they start spread out as you unlock traversal abilities like wall-running, rolling and tall jumps (but weirdly enough, no double-jumping or dashes).
I... guess that's a long-winded way of saying that yes, this is a metroidvania game.
You play as one of three apprentices of varying skill with weapons and magic, which you can switch between in special rooms. They each have customizable equipment slots and unlockeable abilities - I actually needed to plan their builds for different bosses in my playthrough, and that's something I don't remember from other Metroidvania games, at least to this extent.
Most of the combat is weapon-based. Magic is important, but unless you equip some very specific items the energy regeneration is so slow as to keep it supplementary. The game handles very well (except for Brent's Wall Jump) and doesn't overstay its welcome at a breezy five hours or so (for me, at least and that's exploring every nook and cranny for secrets.)
Finally there's a surprising amount of dialogue-based story to go through. The tone is unrelentingly goofy and even if the jokes don't always land, it remains likeable.
I'm possibly not the best judge, so I'll admit my bias upfront. MaL is exactly the sort of game I want to play. A metroidvania with a first playthrough time from 3-6 hours, a strict focus on melee, and exploration based leveling. However, if that's what you want, I have yet to find a better game in indie circles that MaL.
The good:
Distinct characters, amusing dialogue, well signposted plot
Multiple playstyles, each with a different focus (ballanced, offence, platforming)
Solid platforming, solid level design, solid boss design
The bad:
The platforming focused character is essentially useless in combat
Combat is overall unnuanced, and fairly easy, will leave you bored and just running passed enemies
Music gets repetative and annoying quickly
The missable:
Every item and 'potential' item states in the item description the item's location.
Every powerup is accounted for on the world map, but you have to be in the area.
Vienna's final powerup make the final boss an absolute cakewalk.
Finished the playthrough in around 5 hours. A very, very solid ,old-school metrovania game with smooth experience. There's no spetacular art or story or game mechanics but everything feels just right. This is a game made to crap on modern games, and it does successfully in my opinion.
Awesome game, tons of fun. Although it is a bit short of a game, you can beat the game twice in about 6 hours. (Mind you I accidently left the game on one night so I kind of have twice that logged). It's even a great game to be competitive with for speed running since you can get through it in less than half an hour. Where the game lacks is the characters; You'll manly be playing as Vienna due to her speed and high jump ability making it easier to get places and Nyn for her destructive swordplay. Brent could have been better if the magic system was a little more forgiving on mana regen.
TLDR Section~
Pros:
- Good animation
- Awesome art style
- Fun... Lots of fun.
- Each character feels unique and their playstyles are actually disguishable
- Well written story with a hilarious abridged version available.
- The music is epic.
Cons:
- Short. As you can tell by reading the other comments, people have only put in 3-6 hours and 100% the game.
- Character swap mechanic is underutilized.
- Dance of the Gnomes aka The Toll-A-Warp music.
Metroidvania with a really good balance between combat and platforming. There's a little bit of backtracking here and there but mostly for items and not actually progressing the main quest. The story, characters and script are original but the dialogue (especially among your party characters) can be hit or miss at times. The music score is good. It reminds me of the music in Super Metroid, mostly serving as background environment music, so you'll either notice it or you won't. (Except for the warp rooms. You'll always notice the music there.)
There's little reason to play this game a second time though, unless you're hunting for achievements. And if you're hunting for achievements, keep in mind there is an achievement that requires you to beat the game within a time limit of 2 hours.
