This game tells a story of three characters: Gabriel Belmont from the first LoS entry, who is now Dracula, his son Trevor, and Trevor's son, Simon.
The game itself is a 2D Hack-and-Slash with Borderlands-like graphics. It isn't long, I managed to beat the story mode on Normal difficulty in 7 hours (given that there are Easy, Nornal, Hard and Hardcore), but there is also a possibility for a completionist walkthrough with collecting all the Bestiary entries and scrolls from dead Brotherhood members, and there is also a Boss Rush mode, where you take on every boss you have encountered throuought the story.
Overall, this game is a must-play whether you are a certified Castlevania enjoyer or if you are just starting to get aquainted with the universe of Castlevania by playing through the LoS series, like me!
Castlevania is a vintage classic, worth the hours and sick story line...
Being a long time fan of castlevania I suppose you could say I’m biased, nevertheless returning to play this game on my steam deck after finishing the original on 3ds is an absolute joy.
It’s been quite a few years since I first played it and the game still hasn’t lost its charm and story…the lord of shadow games were and are something special in the vania universe and I wholeheartedly recommend you pick up all 3 for some memorable gaming.
Konami doesn’t seem to want to make a new mainline castlevania game despite there being a huge want and need from the fans…wake up and smell the garlic Konami….
I could only imagine how good a castlevania game could now be with todays hardware…
Recommend this game at full price and during a sale and absolute steal for fans or non fans.
Konami sucks at making 2D games without Iga and his team.
I bought this because I enjoyed the Castlevania Dominus Collection and SOTN, but this plays NOTHING like them.
It's kinda neat to see a story in a Castlevania game but that's all this one has going for it.
Do NOT buy this if you're looking for a fun metroidvania. It's just a generic hack'n slash game.
Its pretty good. Takes a little bit to dial into.
Mirror of Fate mashing together Consolevanias with DSvanias seems like a best of both worlds, but both elements end up weakening the whole.
A DSvania excels in having a labyrinthian map or series of maps to roam, explore, and backtrack, and Mirror of Fate certainly provides this. Except it comes with Consolevania combat and exploration, which thrives on set-piece fights and clearing out a room of enemies at the start to explore in silence from then on. So instead of an expansive Consolevania world where you explore gorgeous environments, fight a setpiece, explore to the next puzzle, or a DSvania where you're slaughtering enemies room by room across a sidescrolling maze, you end up with a hollow sidescrolling maze that alternates between disengagingly empty or just another chore to mop so you can get back to the game. The puzzles and traversal that also fit well in the expansive world of a Consolevania also end up clunky here, with the extra time to execute actions or focus on elements making what would be routine DSvania actions take sluggishly longer.
Ultimately, a game of two identities struggles to really make either shine. If you like the castle exploration of DSvanias, you can certainly fill out a map or three. If you like the combat of Consolevanias, it's passable. As a whole it's too bland to really recommend, unless you want a secrets checklist to complete or just want to chuckle at the thick Scottish accents.
fun
If you're sensitive to screen shaking, this game might not be for you. The combat sequences involve significant screen shaking, which unfortunately can't be disabled. I had to refund the game due to this issue.
still a solid game
It works with Proton 7.0-6 on Linux/Debian 11 Operating System.
Funcionou com Proton 7.0-6 no Sistema Operacional Linux/Debian 11.
I finished two acts. Loving it so far. I might update my review later. I played a couple of the NES Castlevania games. It is different than those but it doesn't mean it's bad. I like the presentation of it. The cinematics are really nice. Music could've been better but the game is fun either way.
My favourite entry in the Castlevania Lords of Shadow series and the most castlevania out all of them, shame lords of shadow was never the hit it could have been
It's wild to me that a game can be too short and too long at the same time, but with the way Mirror of Fate does it, that's pretty much what it is. Not to sell Mirror of Fate short, as this was what got MercurySteam to get the job to do Samus Returns remake. but the way that it was structured felt a bit off. Like most Castlevania games don't really have a point of no return as the games are so heavily focused on exploring that one of the objectives in those games is to get an 100% map. Here with Mirror of Fate though, the game is divided into 3 entirely different segments with little cross over in terms of map design. This actually causes Mirror of Fate to act more like 3 separate smaller games rather than a more functional big one. While I'm usually a fan of "more" due to variety and experiences, here it just kinda clutters what makes Castlevania's formula work.
Lord of Shadows has different lore and continuity in place of the usual Castlevania affair, but I really don't think shoving all the lore into this one game worked out as well as it could have. As much as I like the Simon and Alucard segments as there is a lot of neat intertwining between the two campaigns, I get next to nothing of that with Trevor's segment in this game. What makes matters worse is that Trevor's bit is at the end, and while I understand what they were trying to do, ultimately it doesn't work as a narrative structure because it feels like a rather hallow final fight. Both Alucard's and Simon's final fights were interesting and drove a proper finality to it that Trevor's just doesn't reach. On top of that every part of these campaigns are all different, and are meant to be experienced for the full playthrough to work. So while I think Trevor's campaign would have worked as a solid post game content, when it's part of the main game it just feels misplaced. It's like suggesting that you play Richter's campaign directly after Alucard's in Symphony of the Night. Like, yes, it would be interesting to see what happened to Richter before Alucard showed up in that story, but when you try to answer everything as a book end, it often leaves no emotional weight because you already knew what happened. In essence, not only does Trevor's campaign steal a lot of what could have made for more interesting boss fights for the other two, but it also hogs more of the play time on ending the game at it's middle rather than it's true end.
Aside from being one campaign too long though, Mirror of Fate is a rather pleasant outing for any Castlevania fan out there. The ascetics of this game work wonders both in terms of lowering the graphical qualities for when it was a 3DS game, while also lending itself to be scaled up with the new HD remake. Despite being short, each campaign does focus on the rpg elements of getting stronger, and getting power ups to progress further along the castle. The game does end up a bit too linear due to each campaign's length, but it has enough wiggle room to feel like it has proper exploration. All in all I liked Mirror of Fate, I just wish it had more room to focus on what felt like a better story and campaign, Simon and Alucard. It's really not the worst thing in the world that Trevor is here though, but I would have preferred another Lords of Shadow game focused on him or at least was made more as a post content prize. Sadly, it seems Mirror of Fate just won't ever live up to that potential of what I wanted, but if what we got was still a really fun outing of standard Castlevania adventure, I can live with that.
If you're invested in the Lords Of Shadow storyline, this has some really enjoyable story beats and good fan service. But it's not a very good game. It's not broken, it's not buggy, but the combat is mindless, the exploration is unenjoyable and the puzzles are literal block pushing. I wanted to like this game more as a fan of Castlevania and someone who enjoyed Lords Of Shadow for its unique narrative take... But this is a game you're better off watching YouTube cutscenes for.
A solid Castlevania experience. Not the best ever made, but far from bad. The story is linear but it retains the metroidvania feel of games past, so it's got a good mix.
Castlevania is gaming history
Starting from the story:
- It's alright, I can not bash a lot about it as the developers tried to create something fresh and new but considering the success of the original Castlevania series as a whole in the current media the story now seems even more as a weird spinoff that in places doesn't really make sense.
Gameplay:
- Considering that I was unable to get into Castlevania: Lords of Shadow as I was missing the metroidvania feel to it, this one was a breeze of fresh air, yes it is more linear then the older metroidvania games such as SOTH or a newer one such as Bloodstained ROTH but the basis is more as of the older Castlevania games such as Castlevania 1 or Castlevania 2 with a little backtracking added to it.
- Combat is pretty good, it was frustrating to go through the Bosh Rush Mode on hardcore, but still found it pretty enjoyable while learning all of the patterns and after beating the Bosh Rush Mode it was just easy running through the game on hardcore in less than 3h 30minutes (there is an achievement like this in the game to finish the game in that amount of time it just so happened that hardcore mode for the regular game was also left for me).
The not so good:
- To be fair I was lacking a little more time for each character as you start As Simon Belmont and it was really easy, then you get Alucard as the second character where you truly get to explore more and you really start getting used to the mechanics and lastly it's Trevor where the difficulty spikes up a lot if you started the game on Hard difficulty (So in a way the progression is there, but would have loved to spend more time with each character).
- Achievements are more on the grind side as you backtrack to collect all of the collectables to basically increase your hp/mp and so on to get ready for the hardcore mode - for a first playthrough I would recommend collecting all of the secrets just to see everything in the game, but as said it is more of a grind and hardcore mode would be insanely hard without fully upgrading your level and hp/mp, not even talking about the Bosh Rush Mode, where you have to really learn the patterns.
- There are some bugs and the controls sometimes do feel a little janky, but it's a game that was made for 3DS and for it to be ported and upgraded in HD for the PC I think they did a fairly good job and it is more a product of it's time with the quicktime events and so on.
All in all I recommend to give this game a try as the original Castlevania: Lords of Shadow just did not sit with me and this sidescrolling gameplay was a fair fit and if you are a person that is in for the achievement grind, well do keep in mind that the achievements more or less are an actual grind.
Better than you heard it was
great story and over all great castlavania game...i have played through it several times...in fact all three are good
Location: Inner Cells
I couldn't get out of a spot, no reset, no unstuck option, you just can't escape the spot. All over a chest. 7 hours is all I am getting from this game because I can't go no further.
