I’m shocked to see this game still aLIVE!
I presumed it dead after news of deteriorating service years back. I did play the original, browser-based Quake LIVE release a lot, but various issues made me jump from the bandwagon.
This game cut its Free To Play monetization ties, settling on a single-purchase, functional client that maybe is missing some bells and whistles, but it certainly does every well designed client should do. Clean option menus, carrier statistics and achievement system integration work flawlessly and reduce friction in finding a fun multiplayer match immensly!
I was also surprised to see a decent amount of servers being semi-regularly populated by dedicated players. Of course, skill level of people playing is extremely hostile to new people, so I cannot in good faith recommend this classic to everybody…
…BUT, Quake III’s gameplay aged like a fine wine. If you wish to revisit to simpler times of no progression mechanics, no hero abilities and pure skilled play bliss – this is an excellent trip worth buying into.

I knew that this game was well loved in its time and that it was like THE fps game people played and after trying it out for myself 14 years after it came out I can confidently say that the first person shooter genre peaked in 2010 and since has matched this at best. It's just stupid fun. go get it with a couple friends and just play ffa. You're not gonna be playing this 24/7, but it's perfect for the occaisonal fun night with friends every now and then. that is when it peaks and that is where it's the most enjoyable.
I don't even have any nostalgia for quake btw. I was born in 2004 and only knew about quake as the ancient shooter that was so good it made the genre what it is today and now I understand why. This game still holds up. it doesn't even have any jank that comes with being old and the UI and menus are good.
I can not stress enough how well this game holds up.
Still a blast to play all these years later and it still has a decent sized community. just be ready to get your butt kicked at the start.

Intro
This is more or less Quake 3 Arena + Team Arena, with Steamworks integration and Workshop support. It could've been a slam dunk and the superior version to play over the originals. But for me, since it has less advanced customization options for offline matches, it kind of limits the amount of fun I get to have compared to the originals. But credit where it's due, it has more game modes than said originals.

+ Good aesthetics and graphics.
+ Includes maps from the originals.

- Finding online matches is not easy.
- Offline matches aren't as customizable as the originals. You don't have control over the match timer or score target.

This game is the 'perfect' FPS. I'm not a gamer at all, but this game immediately got me addicted. The ambiance, the movement, the maps: it's the most polished FPS ever.
Additional bonus: No participation trophies, no pay-to-win, no loot boxes and gifts and legends and special powers. Just you and the guns, jumping around at insane speed. And it's the only real AFPS (Quake Champions doesn't count it sucks) that still has a players online,
They should have remastered this already. It's the perfect game but could use some graphical enhancements.
$10 is an absolute steal for this game. Still a banger, probably one of the best feeling FPS games period. Tons of maps, Steam workshop support, you can definitely find matches although you're probably gonna get your s*%@ rocked the first (or first fifty) match(es).
If you're playing this on a laptop make sure you set your windows scaling to 100%, download the DLC arenas from the Steam workshop. If you're bad look up a guide and play against players that are better than you.
