this is like, one of the best games ever. but its not fun to play! and thats the point. violence is miserable! there’s nothing cool, or fun, or satisfying about it! if you’re gonna make a game about how violence is bad, the violence shouldn’t be fun.

Underrated gem. The world was not ready.

I have a fascination with anti war media, because despite how many works claim to be anti war almost all of them still end up glorifying it to a degree. The only films that truly work as anti war works are those in which nothing is gained, everything is pointless, and you as the viewer are left feeling hollow, because ultimately that's what war is.

That being said I feel Kane and lynch 2 is probably the only game that is truly anti violence. The game is clearly made by some talented people. The levels are well designed with cover feeling natural and the direction of travel being clear. The multiplayer mode while dead (unless you P2P) is genuinely an amazing idea that I'm shocked I haven't seen repeated. The gunplay while mediocre feels snappy enough.

So why is it "anti violence" well because of what the campaign of the game actually consists of. The player perspective is seemingly a third character who is recording the events of the game with a video camera and such there is some of the most aggressive screen shake I've ever seen in a game. It really does feel like you're watching someone run with a camcorder. It's so bad many need to turn it off to not get motion sick. There's also shit constantly smeared on said screen. The audio is compressed to all hell. The gameplay consists of one long killing spree. No breaks, no downtime, only more violence. Every character is awful. Our two protagonist ruin their own lives and those of everyone around them, even leaveing you the player dead on a runway in Shanghai (sort of). The rest of the cast are also awful and only out for themselves. It's incredibly short being only around 3-4 hours to complete. Oh and it opens with the box cutter scene.

The game feels designed to be as off-putting as possible in a very deliberate way. The gameplay is not a huge power fantasy or an epic struggle against the odds. It's a bland affair of whack a mole. The violence is gratuitous but in no way cathartic (akin to that of say doom). And the story leaves with the main characters in a worse position than they started having achieved nothing. Everything was pointless and you leave feeling hollow.

Back in 2010, I missed out on the multiplayer experience for KL2. Fifteen years later, it upsets me even more that the multiplayer never caught on and that this game failed on arrival. I joined the Multiplayer community Discord YEARS after purchasing this game and way before YouTubers started praising this hidden gem. The Story Mode is short but a quick and fun breeze-through with a friend for Co-op or take on the small community still left for this game (myself included) in multiplayer arcade style heists with friendly fire ON and ENCOURAGED (most amount of money at the end of the match wins (wink wink))! Please buy this game and really judge it on its own merit. Visceral, raw and very much in your face with a fun experience that'll make you itch for more but sad that the scene for the game is as small as it is. Also, relist Kane and Lynch : Dead Men!

Is it a good game? No, by all means this game is quite average in terms of gameplay and it is very jank. Gunplay does not feel smooth and it is quite buggy however, despite the flaws the game's lore and atmosphere is quite amazing. It feels ugly and horrible but in a good way. While the gameplay as stated earlier isn't the best, the lore is quite great and I recommend that you get the chance to play this shooter and experience the story of Kane & Lynch 2 if you're also willing to put up with the okish gameplay. I must say, wait until this game goes on a sale I think I got my copy for around 0.99 cents.

Story

Dogs Days tells a particularly simple story about two criminals getting in way over their heads, or at least it would if the gameplay didn't involve the duo slaughtering their way through hundreds of street thugs, police officers, and professionally trained soldiers. Players take control of Lynch who is living in Shanghai with his girlfriend Xiu. His "friend" Kane has just arrived to take part in a business deal Lynch is helping to organize, but joins Lynch in a shakedown that goes south when their mark goes on the run leading to a chase and shootout in the streets. After accidentally killing the girl their target was on the run with, the man kills himself, leaving the two confused as to what just happens, but they proceed with the business deal. Everything spirals from there as attackers descend on them from all sides and don't stop coming until the end of the game. The story K&L2 tells isn't particularly deep and the game hasn't got a single likeable or interesting character to its name. It's events reach levels of insanity that can only possibly happen when the characters are utterly encased in the thickest levels of plot armor imaginable, and the game ends to abruptly that it almost feels you can see the exact moment the money ran out or release day arrived.

Gameplay

Kane & Lynch 2 is an incredibly basic third person shooter that's as shallow as they come. A basic and bare functional cover system, two weapon loadouts, painfully inaccurate weapons, and the ability to grab enemies as meat shields that don't really seem to shield much at all. In fact enemies seem to be programmed with instant kill bullets if you get within close proximity of them, just to make sure you can't abuse the fact that pressing a button on them at close range instantly grabs them without a struggle. Explosive containers can be picked up, thrown, and then shot. That's it. That's the entire game, followed by hundreds of enemies spamming you until the credits roll. The cover system is so bad that on harder difficulties, you're better off just standing around corners and using the broken crosshair system to shoot at enemies who can't shoot back at you. Also the game has co-op if you enjoy suffering with friends.

Arcade Mode is a strange waste of time where you and a handful of AI controlled criminals take on jobs that involve collecting money and then fighting your way to the escape point. The more money you collect, the higher your score and you can very slowly rank up to get access to better starting weapons. As a round based game mode, you just replay the same level again and again but enemies become more lethal with each new round. Your teammates can be killed to take their money but this will flag you as an enemy to the rest of them, and they can open fire on you if you don't have what they deem to be "enough money" for some reason. Though this at least allows you to return fire with consequence. It's not very interesting and you'll be hard pressed to find anything about it fun.

Presentation

This could have been Dog Days' one saving grace, but the dev team lacked either the courage or the resources to commit to it. As a third person shooter, the game's camera and visual style is intended to mimic a 2000's camcorder, as if a cameraman is following the duo through their misadventure. Light from the sky is washed out with bloom and light sources cast rays across the camera lens which can be dirtiest with dust, water, and blood in the heat of combat. Sprinting causes the camera to bob heavily as if the cameraman is dashing to keep pace with your character. Explosions or other visually noisy effects will cause the bitrate to fail and produce visible checkerboarding of the pixels. But the game doesn't go far enough. It still has a HUD that completely destroy's the "cameraman" aesthetic. The camera itself still controls exactly like any over the shoulder camera would. For every noise that actually sounds like it's being recorded by a cheap camcorder microphone, the majority of the game's noises don't and the soundscape is often filled with nonsense "mental" atmosphere that feels like it belongs in a horror game, not the mean streets of China. Environments are actually incredibly detailed and lavishly produced but character models, especially their animations, fail to match. The game's presentation is at its best when no humans are on the screen. It's got a large share of bugs but most can be fixed with a reset of the game. However beating it causes the game to crash right after it registers the level being completed. Fortunately, you don't miss anything but the credits when it happens.

We didn't appreciate this when it came out back in 2010.

A beautiful ugly duckling of a game. Perhaps a failed experiment at points; but a far more artistically ambitious experience than it needed to be.

I get why everyone hated it when it came out - Its a difficult piece to like; and a frankly mediocre action shooter at points; but the bleak live leak style vibe and relentless intensity of its plot gives it some real staying power. At some points; one of the most horrifying games I've ever played; and a brilliant deconstruction of the white male murder tourism power fantasy; close to reaching the highs of SPEC-OPS the line at points.

As a game its not as strong as Spec-Ops - A.I is buggy; stealth is a joke and the cover system will get you killed at points. However I think its short length mitigates these problems. Some of these problems might be fixed if playing the campaign with a friend.

I would honestly recommend it; But get it cheap and have some jank tolerance.

An impressive third-person shooter game that targets gangs and the police as well

Actually has a really cool visual motif. Never seen anything like it since. Just wish it was longer than 4 hours and had anything other than the most boring gameplay ever.

The multiplayer game mode in this is one of my all time favorite multiplayer types. Heist setup where you work as a team to make it to the end or betray your teammates to get more money, but then they come back as police to work against you to stop you from getting out with the money. Was insanely fun with a group of friends

read the reviews about this and had my doubts, but after playing the first one on ps3 years back i thought may aswell give this a go, the gameplays a bit clunky but the art/style of the game is class, good concept, brilliant story and very gritty and violent/gory

This game is not for everyone, but there is something here for people who want to be immersed. Do not expect a tight third person shooter, but instead enjoy it for what it is.
A shooter that expects you to miss and not distinguish an enemy and a civilian, because within the madness of a gunfight, you are not superhuman or John Wick.

Kane and Lynch 2: Dog days is a misunderstood product of its time, that never got the flowers it deserved. This title provides an experience so unique and extreme that seems hard to be replicated, let alone in today's gaming industry. Not without its flaws however, this duo's escapade seems to be a rough hidden gem that could defintely be worth your time and money, depending on how much you enjoy dark and gritty narratives with over the top violence. Yet, this game never fails to insinuate there's more to it under its filthy surface.

The second installment in the franchise sees the now notorious duo meeting again in Shanghai to facilitate an arms deal, so lucrative, that could be their 'last job', the ticket they need to exit their dangerous of way of life. However, a domino effect of unfortunate events spirals Kane and Lynch into a blood soaked nightmare full of volatile adversaries, dwindling allies and unforgiving circumstances. Their 48 hours in Shanghai will be a testament to their unity as well as a harsh lesson. Old dogs can't learn new tricks...

The gameplay of K&L 2 boils down to a bare bones third person cover shooter. You will take turns shooting behind cover and avoid being shot yourself for the majority of this 5-7 hour campaign. The cover system is clunky as well as the shooting mostly feeling inaccurate at best. However, this is more of a design decision, to underline the pressure of the characters and the chaos amidst the gunfire. Tons of rounds needed to gun down enemies over distance and cover is never a true safe space, since the AI will always try to flank and shoot potshots around or over your position. Sadly, this game, even though it has solid moment to moment gameplay, the monotony of the campaign will showcase some
of it's poorly aged mechanics.

Where the title shines the most however, is in it's art direction and plot delivery. The whole game feels like it's been recorded in one of those shaky and old camcorders. Giving the player the sense that they are watching forbidden found footage from a dark website. Shooting enemies via headshots will pixelate the gore, explosions will ruin the audio for a few moments and loading screens show the camera buffering and loading pictures. This title has an undying commitment to delivering the narrative via this way, really enhancing immersion and giving it its own unique style that is unrivaled! The level design is also superb, offering diverse locals with powerful scenery and beautiful color implementation.

The two protagonists exchange some very well written dialogue throughout the campaign with phenomenal voice work done to support it. The cinematography is on point, with every cutscene more gripping than the previous. Everything here culminates in an intense thriller experience designed to make you feel uncomfortable and second guess whats about to happen next.

K&L 2 is a also a coop experience. Even thought it can be played solo, the game is greatly enhanced with a buddy on board. There's also a multiplayer component that is now mostly inactive, however if you find a match to play, it seems very interesting and fun with a couple of game modes to choose from bearing interesting gimmicks.

All in all, Kane and Lynch 2: Dog Days was an experience that I will likely never forget. It charmed me with it's art style that it wears so proudly and kept me on edge with it's narrative and characters. If you can get past some gameplay oversights and the overall length, I'd say that this game can impress in ways you wouldn't guess.

The Kane & Lynch series is criminally underrated. I absolutely love its atmosphere, setting, sound design, and characters. While the gameplay isn't top-tier, the overall experience is worth it for these elements alone. The game’s tone is dark and depressing, and the unique, grainy "YouTube-like" camera format adds to its immersive storytelling.

In my opinion, it’s worth buying the game just for its iconic menu screen — one of the best I’ve ever seen! The music design also amplifies the unsettling atmosphere of the game, with certain scenes standing out in particular. For example, an early shootout features police sirens blended into the music and sound effects, creating a hopeless, eerie mood that’s hard to forget.

I love how this game looks like a Live Leak video. Loathe just about everything else.
