Real sweetheart of a game; I felt a lot of heart went into this. Not too difficult once you know what you're doing, with a hard playthrough taking me around 12 hours. There's no grinding, so it's good for completionists who want every enemy gone by the end. I've played it a few times now, and it was definitely worth the money.
This game is extremely short and has little to no replay value. That said, it is also worth the money for a brief bit of entertainment, provided you don't mind those two points. The artistic character of the game is certainly lovely, and the world it is set in seemed interesting, but due to the brevity of the game, you don't get to see or learn as much as I would've liked.
Great game, not worth the price. Wait for a big sale and have fun!
I probably waited a bit too long to play this. I remember buying this ten years ago, starting it about three or four times, but only playing for a few minutes before putting it aside. The last two weeks I managed to play two full hours, but I think that's about as far as I can go.
Skyborn is not a bad game at all. The artwork is lovingly crafted, the music (what little there is) reminds me of the 90s playing SNES RPGs and the battle, crafting and equipment mechanics all feel fine. Basic, but fine. The story has a good amount of drama, sympathetic good guys, evil bad guys and some in between (at least in the first two hours). It's also fine.
There are some quality-of-life hiccups. Movement is only in four directions and playing with either gamepad or K+M feels clunky in their own way somehow. Crafting is a serious pain, because you have to look up your inventory to note the number of materials you have and what equipment you might need, before going through the cumbersome RPGMaker dialogues that moonlight as a crafting menu. The monster design is very basic and on the overworld all monsters look the same.
The words coming into my head trying to describe Skyborn are: passable, basic, charming. Again, not bad. But also, sadly, in 2024 and at least for me, not engaging and not motivating enough to actually continue playing it. Fans of JRPGs and/or RPGMaker games should probably give this a better chance than me, though.
Fun JRPG set in an interesting world and with a rather enjoyable plot.
I am pretty terrible at turn based combat but I was able to clear the whole game without a single game over - health/mana items and spells are plentiful and there’s enough enemy encounters to ensure plenty of stats upgrades.
You can also choose two class specializations at fixed points in the story, which adds a nice little bit of depth.
Graphics are pretty but not amazing - character models in dialogue and battle are super cool.
Pretty unique concept as far as the story goes, where you play as Claret Spencer, a steampunk airship mechanic who lives as a second-class citizen in a country that was conquered by the titular race of winged humanoids who discriminate against humans and hate halfbreeds with a passion, and ends up accidentally having to join a rebellion led by a Zorro/Batman/Scarlet Pimpernel figure known as the Scarlet Spectre whose public persona is a vapid aristocrat but has very personal reasons to dislike the way things are.
Gameplay was nothing revolutionary, albeit there is a surprisingly complex crafting and equipment system and some interesting ideas regarding the turn-based combat system, and the story makes up for the pretty traditional gameplay by keeping you interested and engaged. Seem the game is less than 10 hours long, so it falls on the shorter side and is a nice palate cleanser between two of those 40+ hour RPG's.
