Описание

In the world of the Heretic Kingdoms, a world where God is dead and religion heresy, you are cast as a young female inquisitor, working to stamp out the last remnants of religion. On instructions to destroy a relic which the Inquisition considers to be a significant threat, you are drawn into a war between two warring secret societies – a conspiracy of mages whose goal is true power, and a shadowy cult who seeks to resurrect the Dead God.

As the story progresses, you will be placed in an amoral world and left to decide your own morality. Just like the real world, your actions have consequences, and it is up to you to decide if you can live with them or not. Play as an altruistic heroine, a vicious and selfish egotist, or just a woman trying to get her job done – your actions will lead you to one of six different endings depending on where you decide your loyalties lie. Will you crush religion underfoot, or become its savior? Only you can decide!
An engaging story line written by a script team lead by critically acclaimed game writer and designer Chris Bateman (Discworld Noir, Ghost Master)!
Features a simple but rewarding combat system that keeps the action flowing thick and fast.

A vast world to explore containing around fifty locations, scores of unique monsters, and tons of loot!

Has some interesting ideas, but falls flat in execution. Also has a decent story on paper, which transforms in a list of cop-outs in practice.
Really wanted to like this one since couldn't find it for some time since finding this game on a DVD back in 2000s. Very much beatable in 10 hours, thankfully, although it always craches on minimize on Win10, and has no hi-rez patch that I know of, and cannot have one due to the levels being literal pictures and not a proper 3D environment, while the characters are rendered in 3D.
Balance is way off too, and some problems aren't solveable even on higher difficulties, I guess: the last fire spells, for example, seem to be unobtainable due to the source of the last one being the 3rd to last boss, and you need to practice with new weapons to get skills.
Level design is ass. The PNGs that consist the levels are good, but the levels themselves are either open fields or maze-like paddings, no in-between.
Nostalgic value only, otherwise be warned, if you try it — have fun that I haven't.

TL; DR Kult: Heretic Kingdoms also known as Heretic Kingdoms: the Inquisition is a game about wiping out the last vestiges of religion but only if you really want to. Its most interesting aspects are its visuals and its narrative, the gameplay can get repetitive but it is short, and encourages repeat playthroughs.

Note you cannot overwrite your save, so you only have 200 saves per playthrough, that will be as enough as long as you do not save obsessively and stick to your choices

Story

God is dead and religion is death. Your life is dedicated to the Inquisition, and the eradication of belief, and now the time has come to destroy the supreme symbol of faith. The Godslayer, the source of power for each wretched creature demanding worship, it must be destroyed, but as you and your master arrive at the monastery you see a terrible sight...
Someone got to the monks before you did! And they stole the Godslayer sword! You are to search for leads, and not return to your master until you find something tangible. Death to religion!

The Heretic Kingdoms is a fascinating, sometimes revolting, dark fantasy world mired in suspicion and paranoia. Idolatry persists, and religious people are everywhere but so are Inquisitors and they do not take too kindly to professions of faith. It is hard to call the game antitheistic but you are given options to roleplay as a proper Inquisitor, there are also a number of choices that are morally evil, but sometimes it is a bit too outlandish, which was the style at the time.
However, I find the history of the world more interesting, with false deities continually ascending with the help of the Godslayer, most recently the Theocrat, that inbred descendent of the hero who slew God, he who was frail and weak until he acquired that legendary sword. The Godslayer poses an obvious danger to the world, so it is easy to see your master’s point and devote yourself to his quest.
Yet the Heretic Kingdoms is a land with a number of characters that have interwoven backstories and relationships, it is worthwhile even without the intriguing history of revolution, coups, subterfuge and false gods. The Inquisition itself has turmoil and individuals who outright despise each other for their lack of zeal or their perceived lack of competence, such rivalries and internecine struggles are fun.
Another interesting aspect is the characterisation of our main character, she is not a player insert, but we can help her along whenever there is a choice to be made, this means that she will respond and talk with the other characters as if she is an actual person which can help with the flow of conversation. This is not and never intended to be the sort of choice-driven CRPG that a game like Tyranny is, and that is good because it is hard to make a choice-driven CRPG where the main character starts out as an unquestioning student who slowly learns more about the world, and the events as they happen. Limiting our choices and giving her an actual character helps that narrative shine, and makes it seem like she forms her own worldview and comes to her own conclusions, even if those conclusions can be drastically different depending how the story unfolds.

Presentation

I am a sucker for pre-rendered backgrounds, and Heretic Kingdoms provides me with what I want. These backdrops are often very pretty with the most important and beautiful being the fortress city of Kyallisar, it is desolate and dreary, but it still stands, and it remains as defiant as it always has been.
As for designs, we have a number of ghoulish creatures, they do jarringly stick out from the backgrounds, but they are often pretty on their own or have designs worth appreciating. The Taymurians and the Shura are two examples, but the monstrous fiends of the Dreamworld are the most memorable.

There are other things, sometimes the gameplay is interrupted by cutscenes, these often look great, evocative still pieces to flesh out the history of the characters and the world, I am particularly fond of those depicting the Theocrat, seeing his feeble self before acquiring the Godslayer gives us an understanding of its power that is hard to replicate with mere words. However, some of the cutscenes are not very good, they are simply uninteresting, and they force me to wonder why they felt the need to have seconds long cutscenes describing the duties of the High Inquisitor. At least we get a good narrator, he is a Doctor of some sort, but I cannot recall Who he is.

There is also a soundtrack, and since this is a dark fantasy title it will be a bit tense and ominous, anything else would be unsuitable.
I am very fond of the main theme of Kyallisar, it is triumphant but mellow, willing to hide the true powers of the Inquisition that reside within it, even as they exert their dominance over the politics of the city.
There are also the tracks for the more sanctified areas, like churches, and monasteries, they keep that ominous streak but there is a hint of, and sometimes explicitly, this reverence to them that works really well and that you get a lot more out of when you engage with the narrative.

Gameplay

Heretic Kingdoms weakest aspect is its gameplay which is a bit of an issue when it's a video game, it can be compared to Diablo but it lacks some of the features that makes that series of games so addictive.
My major issue with this one is the attunement system, this is the fluff, your skills and your abilities that are there to augment your linearly improved statistics. Each equipable item has an effect that you can use once attunend and once you meet the requirements, you can triple critical damage, quadruple critical chance, sunder armour, get spell effects on crits and many many other things…
It is a poor system, that punishes new players and keeps them from knowing what their build is until they look it up or start a new playthrough. This is because you simply do not know what effects an item has until you attune to it, and that takes a while, so you are either switching weapons constantly trying to find something good, or you stop bothering because switching equipment and hoping for something good is a hassle and feels like a waste of time.
If you choose to play Heretic Kingdoms you should probably look up a list of all attunements and just get the stuff you need and want, that way you can figure out your playstyle beyond the most basic description like “mage” or “fighter” before the end of the game.
Luckily the game is short, so a playthrough where you fumble about not knowing any effects for any equipment does not drag on and on, it can be enjoyable, I did enjoy my playthrough, but being completely clueless can have you running face first into a wall, which is unhealthy. I personally do not consider it fun to whale on a boss for ages before they finally die, and that is what you will be doing near the end, so its best to have some sort of plan and some sort of efficient build.
If push comes to shove you can always hide out in the Dreamworld for a bit, it is often, somewhat, free from eldritch entities.

It is remarkable that none of this really bothers me, in hindsight the only sour thing about my experience was the save limit, the fact that you literally cannot overwrite your saves is confounding and seems amateurish. Sure, you are unlikely to reach 200 saves unless you regret a choice, or if you save obsessively, well I have played old games before, so I do both of those things…
I can tell you that replaying entire areas several times is a bit unhealthy and sours the experience overall especially when the endgame bosses are HP sponges and take forever to kill, but if you are aware of this little issue that is a save limit then Heretic Kingdoms is a pretty easy recommendation.

Simple, short. The atunnement system is nice. Story is decent, rpg elements very streamlined. Not a masterpiece or even a great game, just casual fun.
