A fun and new style of halo game having you play as Sarah Palmer
Pros:
- All new original story
- You get to play as Sarah Palmer
- new style of gameplay is interesting
Cons:
- Not everybody will be into this style of game.
this is one of the best top down games. Pretty good graphics, exciting action and on top of all that, its a Halo game! Its also a great small game that takes up barely any space
Don't bother unless going for halo completionism
Its cute and fun but its got that world famous "343 lack of charm and effort" lotta missing basic features like options mid game or controls in game, you have to go back to the main menu to change anything
i say halo
not bad for three quid
this game does not seem like much but it is fun. for 80 cents is a steal. it is a fun arcade type game and it's less then a dollar c'mon you gotta buy this. it is fun.
Halo: Spartan Assault is a fun little spin off game of the popular Halo series. It's a top down twin stick shooter with 30 missions. Obviously it's not going to stand up to the main Halo games, but for fans it is fun to sink a few casual hours into. You can breeze through the game in two hours or more if you want all the extra challanges and achievments.
Nothing special or mind blowing here but for Halo fans a fun little time sink.
Finished the game. A cheap game, fairly short, story isn't amazing, gameplay is ok. Its one of those arcade kind of games which you play every once in a while or finish in one sitting and don't take too seriously. You will have average amount of fun playing it. For the price I would say its ok.
this game crashes more than starfield, the devs have fixed nothing and I don't think they ever will, another proof that Halo is dead, good job Microsoft
Despite originally being a mobile game, it's fairly competent. The campaign isn't too terribly long, but you do get some lore and a fun and easy to understand top down version of Halo with simplified weapons and mechanics. Projectile weapons are the best, plasma weapons are basically useless. There's some replay value to be had, especially if you intend on getting all achievements. But after that I'm not really sure if it'd be worth playing. The sequel game is apparently much better in that regard. But still, for how cheap the game is, it's well worth having and playing, especially if you love Halo.
Halo: Spartan Assault and Halo: Spartan Strike on sale is an absolute steal!
Both Halo's are addictive shooters that retain enough of the look and elements of the Halo universe. The varied miniature missions fit the top-down play style perfectly.
These worked great on my steam deck, nice and easy to pick up and play instantly. I recommend if you want some nostalgic Halo :D
Fun little arcade style adventure with some extra achievements and some lore attached. If you don't care about it then it's not a core experience needed to understand the Halo series. Just a fun little extra.
If you just want to blow through it it should take you about 3-4 hours. If you want to replay missions and get all the bonuses then maybe 10ish hours at MAX.
reminds me of syndicate from bullfrog from the 90s
game crashes not playing
Dumb port that crashes constantly, don't buy.
Haloo, does anybody work there anymore? an additional game to an already terrible series
I know it's popular to shit on this game because it's not exactly conventional Halo. At the time, Microsoft made the incredibly tone deaf decision of releasing this years before even contemplating bringing the rest of the Halo games to PC. And to be fair, the story is a barely-there nothing burger of a story.
Yet I'd be lying if I didn't call the actual gameplay a ton of fun. They finally experiment with the weapon arsenal in fresh ways! Some of the more tired conventions of Halo are tossed aside for new ones, like additional armor abilities that sadly never appeared in the main games, more of the expanded lore vehicles/weapons getting a chance to shine, and some weapon remixes are a ton of fun. The Spartan Laser in particular, as a hold-and-fire weapon is interesting! I vastly prefer this game's upgrade to the Elite Plasma Rifle over the "Storm Rifle" and whatever other nonsense the newer games have been tossing at players.
Ignore the tag line - there is no point to the "Origin of Spartan Ops", but mechanically? This is one of the better twin-stick shooters on the market, hands down!
Burning passion for Halo:
I have always loved Halo even when from they first released the very first one on disk as a demo to see how the public would enjoy it, and I was hooked. This game is what I remember of Halo being to this day. And really enjoy the overhead view that you are able to play at during the game. Going and fighting the covenant and the numerous amount of enemies that come with it, if you don't know what Halo is and want to learn more and play the main games the MCC is a great way to get started now and get these games at a later time or when they go on sale and continue the saga and to finish the fight. This is a really enjoyable game during my time of playing it (ignore the playtime)
In my opinion I loved playing this game and recommend it on a sale only for the fact that the shelf life of this has been out for quiet some time now and have seen it down for a dollar at times.
I like this game, but I just don't get sucked into it. It's so cheap that there's no real reason not to get it though. Less than $6 for this and spartan strike is a no-brainer.
Good story, can see it would have been a good port to play on phone with the control system and mechanics of the game, good end boss battle that was actually challenging, and whilst I didn't 100% this game, there are enough side missions if you need something to play if you don't mind replaying same levels other again.
Poor game. Absolute barebones story, tedious gameplay, more boring and frustrating than fun.
It's an all right mobile Halo game, I had some fun with it. (This game is great for the Steam Deck) I really can't complain about this game though because I got both this game and it's sequel for $0.80. (Extremely Cheap in simple terms)
Overall, its an all right mobile game (ported well to PC), and if you have a Steam Deck and see this game and it's sequel for $0.80 then I would say give it a go.
6.5/10
? I can't open the game
I enjoyed the little side story here and kinda wish 343 made more of these little spinoffs in between the main games. It's not exactly substantial since most halo stories are just aliens and power rangers pretty much fighting and going from point A to B, however it helps the worldbuilding for the other mainline games like 4 and 5.
I always wanted to play those interesting terminals in Halo 4 and audio logs in 5, that would've really taken those games a step above the bungie games since they could've done short vignette missions where you play the neat story they were making as opposed to just hearing someone else say how cool it was. So making a game like this showed me why Palmer was the way she was, even if it didn't really show much of her as a person I understand how she fought because I played as her and did cool things like fun wave defense and hijacking vehicles.
It's basically a playable terminal from Halo 4 or an extended deleted scene. For a top down twin stick Halo game, it's pretty good, you have about 30 missions and it took me roughly 5 hours to beat over the course of a couple days. If you like shooting aliens, you will absolutely be doing a lot of that in Spartan Assault. There were a few issues during my playtime, if I tried launching the game with a controller plugged in, it'd crash every time, but if I unplugged it, the game would work fine and launch without issue, and the guns had very inconsistent and odd handling with big input delays that got me killed constantly. Coupled with you being slowed down while shooting meant I died a lot due to my guns jamming up and not being able to shoot. Clearly the unsc forgot to clean their weapons. That might've been fine in a horror game, but not here. Other than that, the game ran fine and was fun.
In closing:
I couldn't ever hate the 343 Halos like most people until Infinite came out and was such a lazy pos con of a game, because I could tell they were actually putting in an honest and elaborate effort to make something cool and interesting throughout their mainline games and spinoffs like this one here. People throwing the baby out with the bathwater before 343 was ever really been given much of a chance to finish their main games always bugged me. They tried, but the writing is well and truly on the wall at this point, and I can't exactly blame them for giving up and rebranding. People say they want a thing and just scream murder when they get it. I can certainly speak from experience because I know exactly what that's like.
Since the start, people wanted 343 gone and/or dead. Which means games like this and the other mainline games have been bullied into the ground and likely aren't ever coming back due to their bad reputation and at times lack of marketing. I'm sure someone will come by and pick up the pieces of these games to make some really cool indie games or other projects if they haven't already. There's simply too much effort put into the work after bungie left to be some one-off fluke or series of bad jokes. Billions of dollars spent on games, books, toys, movies, and more seemingly wasted on an incredibly apathetic and constantly pissed off fanbase for such a big IP is such a curiosity.
Fun little Halo game for cheap. Gets a bit repetitive, but it is a fun time waster. This was a phone game so by all accounts, it gets a recommendation from me. I happen to enjoy mobile games for being fun and arcadey experiences with great feedback and immediacy. This game will give you that and for cheap.
Thanks for reading, goodbye!
Spartan Assault's a basic mobile game twin stick shooter with a Halo coat of paint. I remember buying it when it came out simply because it was the only Halo title available on Steam at the time, but even then I only got halfway through before dropping it for 10 years. Finally finished it just so I could check it off of my to-play list and uninstall it for good.
Aside from the save corruption failure to launch bug, there's nothing terribly wrong with SA. It runs smoothly (including on Linux) once you can get it to launch, controls are simple, audio's fine, visuals are fine and occasionally cool except for the hand-painted style cutscenes which look pretty bad sometimes. "Fine" is the best compliment I can give it though; there's just nothing interesting here to make it worth playing. The story is bland when it's not nonsensical. "That's no moon - it's a space station Forerunner installation!". Davis dies offscreen, then kind of comes back at the end, neither event having any weight or payoff. Palmer and Roland, the only other voiced characters, show no more personality than the completely mute Davis. Overall it's a checklist of the things that a Halo story usually contains with none of the interesting bits.
A bad story wouldn't really matter in a game like this if the gameplay was good, but it's not. Mindlessly shoot wave after wave of Covenant with idiotic AI, escort engineers, blow up anything purple, wait 20 seconds for your shield to recharge, repeat ad nauseum. The weapons, vehicles, and abilities are effective enough (mostly), but they're just not that fun. Compare it to something like SYNTHETIK, a game made by 2 people, and the lack of impact and overall personality here becomes laughable.
I could only recommend SA on steep sale to die hard Halo completionists - to everyone else, pass.
Boring garbage game Horrible garbage
Played this on the Xbox One and that version is superior to this one. The controls with vehicles are bad and unless you are playing with a controller this will prove to be annoying at times. Missions and everything is alright and enjoyable for what it is. A short side story that has simple gameplay. The only huge issue I have is the grind for Assault Ops. You have 3 challanges for each mission and they range from being done in one mission to replaying and grinding the hell out of the same mission over and over again.
The Xbox One verision has COOP and missions vs The Flood in those, which sadly this game doesn't offer for some reason.
I mean the game its great but... WHERE IS MY CO-OP MODE?, i only buyed both games because of the sales.
Overall pretty chill game to play with your controller.
Level are crazy short and very easy, especially in the beginning.
Near the end it gets quite hard though and you'll have to replay some levels several times (or change your strategy).
I only wish there were more weapons.
Short and limited, but if you enjoyed the ‘Spartan Ops’ missions from Halo 4 and fancy their isometric analogue then this is for you.
As a hardcore Halo fan, I'd say this is a game that works, it's a Halo-style top-down shooter, and you can play this game if you really want to. Nothing to complain about here, but also nothing to write home about either, if that makes any sense. It's a game, it works, it's got a Halo theme to it, but that's what it is. Great for casual play; kind of like a mobile game you'd play on your phone at the dinner table. I guess I'll leave it at that. Anything else further than that, I'll let you decide for yourself.
It's a nice game that unfortunately gets repetitive pretty quickly.
Combine that with some serious engine issues of running on max 15 fps ,it made it fun while it lasted.
I can run most games on high/ultra but somehow this game runs like a coffeegrinder.
It's cheap on sale so if you don't mind spending a couple of euros it's worth it. But spend a bit more and get yourself a better game imo.
Good Game :D
Halo: Spartan Assault is a fun and fast-paced top-down shooter that fits seamlessly into the Halo universe and takes place before the events of Halo 4.
The game offers around 4 hours of gameplay, making it a short but enjoyable experience. Considering its affordable price, I would say it offers solid value for fans of the franchise or anyone looking for a quick, action-packed shooter.
For the price, it's worth picking up!
It is a fun and decent game, and for what it is, it's worth the few bucks. It is a decent little game that can help pass the time. It has some Halo lore and can help introduce and/or expand upon some events that are not explored deeply in the main titles. The stories and cut scenes are well done and help provide a Halo and Spartan feel. There are a good amount of achievements with interesting and different mission types to keep playing and the assault ops also aids in increasing the game's replayability. This game might not command hours and hours of your time at one shot, however it is a good solo mode pick up and play for 30-60 minutes at a time. Reminder, this is not a main Halo title or a relatively big game. and is mainly used as a simple means to add some context and exploration in the Halo universe.
NOTE: This is nothing like the main Halo titles. This is an arcade style third person, top down, run and gun game. I do not think it is fair to compare to the main Halo games. As long as expectations are tempered, then the game is pretty good for what it is and I definitely recommend it. Especially for the big Halo fans who can't get enough.
not bad for what it is
I want to give more playtime into this game, but it simply can't even open. I uninstalled it, installed back, played for a bit and enjoyed my time before closing it, now it won't open again. As well as its sequel. So for now, Imma have to not recommend it to people interested in buying this game
Meh; it's alright.
Compared to "Halo: The Master Chief Collection"? The gameplay is not only bland, but it does a good basic idea wrong...with limited replay value, repetitive gameplay, with a lack of in-depth multiplayer and co-op modes, as well as lack of a character creator? It feels more like a tech demo, rather than a full "Halo" game.
For all of you gamers reading this review? I'd give this game a soft pass.
A fun little top down shooter combat simulation game in the halo universe. Not a bad game, but far from a strong one. good music though.
very nice
Fun little game, great value. Use a controller.
