Did you ever have a feeling that when you play a game you're going to suffer with trying to figure out how the game was gonna work? That's me trying to figure of this game works, if at all.
For starters, it feels like an Early Access game, and not a good Early Access game like BeamNG Drive, but rather similarly to a game like Cat Simulator, a game that I already reviewed back in 2021. Second, the characters, it's nice to have some kind of characters in the game, but they feel like avatars for the player, who is just as confused as the characters. The only character I can get behind might be The Hunter, AKA Theodore Carnby (yeah, apparently we're follow what the story that Alone in the Dark 2008 wants us to follow, meaning this is an offspring to the original Edward Carnby), and that is a stretch. Thirdly, this game is buggy, but you already know that. Anytime I play this game for long periods of time, I feel like the AI wants out of the game as much as I do, they don't go near the player most of the time, even if they have plenty of space to do so, and even if they do go near the player, they tend to get stuck on objects half the time, even trying to clip through the world geometry, which makes it easier for the player to gun them down. Forthly, how do you beat the game properly?? The second chapter of the Mines of Lorwich level has a part in it where you have to fix another elevator by putting batteries in it, but guess what, you cannot find any more batteries, or none that I can find at least, basically softlocking the game right there.
This game was not even close to being ready for release, I've actually had more fun correcting the spelling mistakes in this review than I've had playing this game. I would highly NOT recommend this game if you value your sanity, go play Alone in the Dark (2024) instead. Heck, even with it's flaws, Alone '08 is a better game than this, go play that!

a perfect game to torture yourself with if you hate good game design and are a survival horror fan, bonus points if you also like alone in the dark as a franchise!!! :)
It is buggy. Not too much, but bugs are terrible. Sometimes, if you press too many buttons at the time (and you need that, believe me), you lose some actions. Sometimes sprint, sometimes attack. There is big bug in E1C2 - you must take your time and place batteries to the right location. If not (if you replace good one) - you can not win this chapter anymore - you are stuck. In episode 3 chapter 2 or 3 you can go behind the world. You can see inverted textures in some random places.
But except bugs game is not so bad as reviews says. Yes, it is completly not Alone in the Dark game. It is more like Alan Wake. But it is quite fun. You search for things, you light the light. you shoot the monsters - what can go wrong? Especially after you get light-bullets for mk4 as a skill.
I tried playing as a witch and as a hunter only. Hunter is good character - no complain about it. Witch - I have no idea how anyone can kill a boss with her.
Chulhu is also nice touch in chapter 3 - yes, it gets your blood pumping: after you kill everyone and stopped the ritual it seems chapter only starts. Chulhu running around and trying to kill you - it is a fun and hard fight.
All in all ignore bad reviews, do not expect anything AitD related, buy with big discount, play it without any expectations and enjoy it. It is fun most of the time.

I'm actually starting to really dig this game. I'm 3 hours in and on the second level (the mine you could call it) and the game runs really well on my Steam Deck with the new Proton 9.0 (Beta) compatibility layer turned on. I'm playing it on easy and strangely it's not broken on this difficulty level (at medium some enemies get stuck on the map, and when the game is about turning light sources on and luring the enemies into the light in order to finish them off, it's a bit of bummer). I have no such issues on easy difficulty and the game's is actually fun played this imo. Don't expect the graphics to blow you away though, they are a bit simple but still does job decently. But.. buy it on a deep sale (I paid 2 €). It's by no means an AAA game (but it's creepy in a good way and actually fun when you play on easy difficulty). Recommended if you like survival horror at the price I paid for it.
