Suprisingly frustrating, fun ^^.
Silly little sweet puzzley (?) game. The gameplay's pretty simple and it's short but it's cheap and it's fun to try out all the different interactions.
The original Haunt the House did not have the best AI but this is somehow worse. The game certainly has charm but that charm wears off because of how tedious the game is. Characters will be fully scared and RIGHT NEXT TO THE DOOR but then GO BACK UP THE STAIRS AND RUN AROUND SOME MORE. I swear I saw someone run up the stairs just so they could jump out of a window.
Play.
i've been playing haunt the house since it's flash game days and have been playing this version since it was originally released! so i really ought to leave a review!
through and through, i adore this game. the art style and music are undeniably charming (to the point that i bought the soundtrack!) and i love exploring each game world. i've been playing this game for ten years and i still discover new stuff in the environments! i particularly love the mansion house level, as it's a revamp of the original flash game's environment and it makes me so nostalgic :,)
each level has so many mechanics and fun tidbits that its impossible to get bored of it, even after so many years of playing. it doesn't take long to complete whatsoever, but the challenge of the achievements and improving your time is incredibly fun!
furthermore, i love the ghost family members who you meet over the course of the terrortown level! they're all so cute and offer small game play changes! the diver is my favorite!
so despite its size and age at this point, haunt the house: terrortown is one of my favorite games. it's given me hours of fun over the years and i'll continue to play it for years to come!
I hope you'll release haunt the house 2 or something similar with replayability. The game will have procedural generation or randomization option. I know you're currently working on a different game. But, this game is a gem. There ain't many games as unique as this one. I hope you consider creating similar game in the future.
Very cute little game.
You play as an adorable ghost that possesses things to scare people until they leave and you can get some gosh darn sleep.
There isn't really a game over, you just use various objects to scare people to raise the spook level so you can do more advanced spooks.
More a cute little game about seeing the various animations than anything else.
Very cheap and cozy.
i love this game, theres tiny bugs but, i hope they see this
It's a pretty simple game, I mostly downloaded it because I used to play it on Friv.com before adobe games went by the wayside, and the fact the developers of the game were able to release it on Steam was so exciting for me. It's a dragging game, and your goal is to scare houseguests away from your home you're still occupying as a ghost, and it's just very pleasant and a sweet art style with a couple underlying scares within it. Very enjoyable game!
I love the train ghost
Sights & Sounds
The one good thing
- I'm going to write a lot of negative words about this game, but I think it's important to give credit where it's due. The presentation, overall, is quite good
- The simple geometry of the world and characters belies the browser game origins, but everything is colorful and detailed enough that it looks good regardless of that fact
- The orchestral score is also excellent. Even when I was having a bad time with the game, at least I could zone out and enjoy the soundtrack
- The rest of the sound design is good too, with screams, thunder, breaking glass, all feeling appropriately scary and silly as intended
Story & Vibes
This subheader intentionally left blank
- If there's any lore or other hidden narrative to Haunt the House: Terrortown (HtH:T), I certainly didn't find it
- The only hint you get is at the beginning of the game when the narrator offhandedly mentions something about "reclaiming what was lost". This raises several questions
- Is our ghost protagonist trying to scare people out of homes so ghosts can have them? Is that what this is all for? Real estate? There are certainly worse investments, but what are you supposed to do with capital when you're dead?
- All that's left is the vibe, which is fairly chill and charming for all of 15 minutes until you realize that there's basically nothing to do in the game
Playability & Replayability
Immediately boring
- Despite "Terrortown" being only one of the four scenarios offered to the player (the others including a train, a mansion, and a Christmas scenario at the North Pole), it hardly matters. The basic gameplay loop in each one is identical
- You take the control of a little ghost who flies around trying to scare all humans out of each building you encounter
- You do this by hovering over an object, possessing it, and mashing a button to perform some spooky action with it that will scare humans in the vicinity
- Doing this over and over with different objects will change the atmosphere of the building, staring at "relaxed" and topping off with "terrifying". The scarier the atmosphere, the easier it is to scare off humans
- Making the atmosphere scarier will also give you additional, more frightening actions when you possess objects
- After you've scared everyone in the building away, you can begin the process again in a different building
- That's it. The game never changes. It's just this over and over again until everyone is scared, you receive a grade for your time, and the game mercifully ends
- The tedium wouldn't be so bad if the humans behaved or moved predictably. Most gameplay just involves scaring everyone towards a door or window and the mashing a button until they finally decide to leave
- Because your scares mostly just seem like mere suggestions, this becomes frustrating almost immediately. I stopped having fun withing 5 minutes
- I don't foresee ever installing or playing this game again. I'm very done with it
Overall Impressions & Performance
Who is this for?
- After finishing all the scenarios, I was left with a really negative impression. I just have a hard time believing that this passes for entertainment
- All you do is mash a button and wait for something to possibly happen. It feels like an utter waste of time
- I think I picked the worst possible entry point for this dev's catalog. All of their other games look good, especially Crow Country (though their PnC games look fun as well), so I'm definitely not going to write them off yet
- Serves me right for not looking up a gameplay video first. Just be warned; everything you see within the first 30 seconds of the game is identical to the rest of it other than the backdrop
- Even if you're just looking to mindlessly waste time, go play Vampire Survivors or something
- I keep seeing nostalgia for this game in other reviews. I just don't see why. This doesn't even clear the lowest bar for "fun"
[*] It played well on the Steam Deck, but I'm gonna go ahead a recommend that you use the storage space for something better
Final Verdict
- 1.5/10. The presentation is nice, but this is otherwise a poor use of your time. Don't make the same mistake as me; give literally any of the devs other games a shot
a truly spooky and fun game to play! i highly recommend it.
2024 kids: its just a game....
its not just a game .......its childhood my memories .......
While very cute, and with a top-notch art style, the gameplay is unfortunately quite boring.
man, I miss my childhood, II remember playing this game when I was 5 or 6-ish, and I got so hooked, wish I could go back in time.
While I'd love to write a positive review, I just can't reccommend it to the average players. Constant crashes and
boring gameplay loop are very prevelant in this game.
good
from a flash game to a full product, R.I.P. FRIV, and may this game, as many others live on forever
Cute game but freezes and crashes a bunch on PC.
once i first started playing. it gave me nostalgia as a kid before when i first played haunt the house!
Bought this years ago due to wanting to support the developer after playing "Detective Grimoire" and never managed to get the point. Just now finally played it through entirely and still haven't managed to get such. Great art style, and with the music muted it's playable, but why one would want to play it remains a mystery.
I'll recommend "Detective Grimoire" though...
"Boo"
*a man literally dies*
I love this game, and I play it more as a casual thing, unlike all my other games. I remember playing it on FRIV and I really loved it, still do, but that doesn't mean it doesn't have it's problems.
My main problem is the speed of the ghost, it would be great if we could change and choose what speed we want, since it's too fast in my opinions, but for others it may be perfect.
It also glitches too often, at least in my games. For example, it keeps unpossessing the objects without me touching it.
It also closes out of nowhere and I lost my progress.
nowadays kid play gta, I am just an old kid.
I respect the flash game nostalgia of many of the positive comments here, but the gameplay is too repetitive and frustrating for me to recommend it to anyone. The spooks get old very fast once you have to use them 100 times in a row to scare away that one person that just cannot find the door. Very high time cost, very little reward.
Reliving my childhood, super cute and still super fun
A relaxing experience for those who do not wish to think while enjoying video games.
fun
Nice game horror
