The map is absolutely jammed with blocks that cannot be drilled through, and need to be broken with consumable explosives (or cannot be broken at all). The consumables are expensive relative to the value of the materials you mine. This leads to a map full of winding tunnels - you will spend more time navigating them than you will playing the game. The devs choice to make half the explosives unavailable the lower levels is absolutely diabolical, as it forces you to wind your way back through the entire map to buy more.
My game crashed mid-session, and I haven't launched it since. Stick to the original game, this one feels like an uninspired puzzle game wearing motherloads skin as a disguise.
A childhood classic
Good clean fun!

And awesome that you get the old Motherload with it!
Awesome local co-op game! ^-^
Love this game
very good sequel to motherload, the new mechanics are very fun, and the story is really cool.
Took 10 years for them to make the game worse
I grow up with this game on like Armor Games or Addicting Game .com and to find out they came out with this was an awesome surprise
Nostalgic upgrade of the original motherboard flash game from the early 2000's. I recommend buying it on sale
I bought this game for some coop fun, but the slow progression and a few bugs ruined it.
Progress is very slow, most of the time is spent going back to refuel and going back down just to drill a tiny bit more.
It is very easy to quickly take huge amounts of damage. It kind of feels as if you either don't take any damage or you bump something slightly faster and almost die.
The game explains almost nothing during gameplay. You're left to wonder what the unlocks actually do, how the bombs work etc. - a few things can be found in separate explanations in the (pause) menu, but things like ore values and unlocks etc. are completely missing.
Story just kind of happens occasionally, but can be accidentally skipped.
Player 1 "disconnected" multple times when left idle briefly. Even worse, it disconnected even when in the menu.
It was possible to re-join the game but the last time it selected a different character and all progress of the current session was lost. Followed by an uninstall.
used to play this on ps4 many years ago, great game
As a guy who grew up in the heyday of Flash Games when I figured out that Super Motherload not only exists, but was also on sale I bought it on the spot, and I am generally very happy with my purchase.
As a note, I will only be talking about Super Motherload; however, the game also includes the option to play the original Motherload Goldium. I did play it briefly but stopped when I realized how much work those nostalgia goggles were doing and how garbage the original game actually was. I am glad that it is included though, that is a nice feature for anyone who wants the original Motherload experience.
Super Motherload’s core experience revolves around drilling through the planet Mars to gather valuable resources. You can only drill left, right, or down, but you can fly up and everything (but you and the final boss). And then there is the inclusion of explosives to clear rocks, magma, or just clear up large amounts of space. It is very simple, don’t damage your driller too much, don’t run out of fuel if you can avoid it, drill, fly back up, and make plenty of money to get upgrades so you can dig even lower, rinse and repeat. I was surprised by how addicted I was to the core gameplay loop and was not expecting to put in over 16 hours into the game and go for all the achievements. It is all really simple but there is a lot of fun to be had: digging puzzles to solve, routes to plan to safely traverse the terrain or combine minerals, resources to manage, and upgrade decisions to be made. It is not perfect by any means. One of the things that I did not realize until way later in the game is how much the characters vary, which became really important for my hardcore run. That should have been clarified along with many other things, I don’t like hand holding but a little tip at the top of the screen, a better breakdown of the characters, or a full panel of stats would have been nice especially because I only played solo, so there was no need to have the character selections available for the other players. And as a bit of an aside I was surprised this game had split-screen at all, after I finished the game I grabbed a spare controller and dorked with it a bit and the game is already fairly claustrophobic (and not in a fun way), but with a second player who may impede your movement, it is even claustrophobic. And what is even crazier is that you can have up to 4 people on the same screen. I already felt like you exhausted the resources pretty quickly, but four people all fighting for resources and stopping you from combining metals and gems together to get you even less of it sounds like cancer. This is combined with the fact that the movement feels rigid overall, and as a solo player it is not too bad, but having miners all pulling the screen away from you it becomes even more rigid. Bringing it back to the core gameplay I found the smelting feature to be brilliant as an upgrade over the original, it makes you consider the order in which you will mine resources which forces you to route plan more. Overall, the core of this game is great (as long as you are playing solo), but there are a few things that really annoy me. For example, you can damage yourself by running into walls, which is fine if you take everything gingerly, but you would be surprised how quickly you gather enough speed to just smack into a wall, the same goes with flying. It is annoying but manageable, though it does feel pretty bad when you move three squares over which is apparently enough speed to do damage to you when you are already too low, and then you die. I did that, and I am a little bitter about it. Also, the game can be a bit of a grind when you get to some of those later upgrades (that is where most of my time spent came from), which does cause the game to feel too slow at the end especially when everything else was paced well. My biggest complaint though is that the hardcore mode has some major issues, the primary being that if you run out of fuel you die. This is akin to the old game, but that feature sucked there too and with how much larger the map of Super Motherload is there become points where you will dive down grab two minerals then leave to get fuel, it gets better in the mid-late game, but I found that it was better to just unlock the Simulacrum and just use your unlimited teleports to solve that problem. I was also very frustrated that during the final boss, I got locked into a corner and was killed in less than a second. Luckily, I alt-f4’d quickly enough not to just lose all of my progress because the game lacks invincibility frames, straight up unacceptable that that can happen. Also, with the way this game plays, it should not have a boss, but the original did and so does this one. It doesn’t feel great, but what can you do about it, at least it is memorable. And a final note was that the game froze on me twice and I had to restart it. Obviously, I liked it enough to play it for 16+ hours, but the issues it has can be pretty bad.
The story was changed from the original and it was fine. The ending to the original was far more memorable and interesting to me, but the new story is far less ridiculous for better or worse. Overall, it was acceptable.
The sound design is decent, the music is pretty good although it does just stop sometimes (and for very long times at that) and it really feels odd to drill in silence. Other games have enough atmosphere and engagement that silence can be good and complement the game; this is not one of those games. Especially when the engine noise has this high-pitched noise that is constant if you listen for it and have good enough hearing to hear it. Beyond that offense to the ears, the sound effects overall are pretty good. And I was not expecting voice acting, but honestly, it is pretty good. A little campy at times but it has a lot of emotion and love put into it.
The graphics have their own style to them and I think it works pretty well. It is nothing too fancy, but it has a feeling of “Flash Games, but modernized” and I like that. Everything is really clear and functional as well, so I have no complaints.
In conclusion, for the cheap price you can pick this game up for when it is on sale, it is well worth playing, hell, you even get two games in one! I do suggest that unless you are a completionist you just avoid hardcore though, it really isn’t that fun. But if you don’t mind a simple and fun indie game with a lot of charm, I think this one is a must-have.
Took me 4hrs to finish the game story.
I think the og motherload had better upgrades available.
I bought it on sale for $5 so thought to get it, however after playing I realised no way this game is worth the full price, only buy it if on sale like I did.
Le couch potato fun \o/
A great game. Includes the classic Motherload that you might of remembered playing on flash on the site XGen Games or if you seen it other sites this a game that you will so enjoy
