If you want to play all Arkham games (this was the case for me) then give it a go. Otherwise I wouldn’t bother. It’s okay at best. Comparing to other Batman games I liked the slight change to the detective mode, making you scan rooms for potential places of interest rather than them being immediately highlighted. Everything else, e.g. combat, exploration or missions are such a downgrade. The ending which I had was especially cumbersome as I had to run through levels a couple of times and the map was really hard to navigate. I’m happy I finished it but I doubt I’ll return to it.
3/5 Not a bad game or DS port.
7.5/10.
Reminds me of the Spider-Man 2 DS game
bad
Pretty good game, but i can also see why this game didn't receive well among fans. This game is nothing like other Arkham games. Its a side scroll game which does not have many features like free flow combat, fewer gadgets etc. In my opinion that's not a problem. This game is enjoyable nonetheless.
Only problem i have with this game is map. It has the worst map interface i have ever seen. I can't really comprehend them with the area stacking over one another.
Story is really nice and i liked the 2D narration. If you want more of Arkham origins story, you can try this.
3.5/5
gameplay is insanely clunky, combat is very barebones compared to the other games, map looks like it was designed by a schizophrenic person, trying to navigate the prison made me want to get a vasectomy, story was aight. i know this game was made for portables but good christ.
.
Feels more like a psp game than a good metrovania game. Although I can say the setting is great the execution is way off, Pc inputs aren't good especially when it comes to countering with left click, your going to be backtracking alot which kinda holts all progress you made and dulls the experience( Yes i know metroidvania games expect back tracking but a good one weaves it into good level design that you can tell apart from one level to another, unlike arkham blackgates thats just 90% fire and cell walls.) Also the controls for movement are stiffer than resident evil 1 on the original playstation.
This beautiful mobile game turned pc game manages to completely destroy everything good about the Arkham game's combat. At times, it is EXTREMELY unresponsive and the sound effects sound like you are hitting the enemies with feather gloves. 2.5 can be done good but this is disgusting. I have yet to complete the game, but the amount of backtracking is out-of-this-world over-the-top. Obtaining the gadgets and progressing feels similarly to how I imagine people felt taking their wagons and horses through muddy thick waters and rivers on the Oregon Trail. Essentially, it takes forever and the boss fights so far are not impressive at all, as the combat sucks. The story isn't half bad though, it's nothing crazy but as I care for the characters in the Arkham games, I feel a compulsion to complete this game whenever I do as concentrated doses of this game make my eyes dry up. Great performances from the Arkham cast as usual. If only the game made it clear where you are supposed to go I could forgive the combat and other issues, but they making me look up guides out here. Horrid Henry Type Game.
i played every arkham game so many times but this games controlls are trashhhh dont buy this shit
The metroidvania elements are fun and so are the boss fights, the combat and stealth are barely passable but if your looking for an early arkham batman adventure it's alright. Buy it on sale though.
The game is fun, but the platformer format can feel a bit confining at some points, at least for me, since I kept missing the freedom of movement from the other games in the franchise. Still, the storybook format is really nice and the gameplay is engaging. My only frustrations were with the boss fights, which you have to learn how to finish each stage of and restart from the beginning everytime you die. Good game, overall. Worth a shot.
[h3]Garbage from a dead PS Vita.
Look. So many people are shitting on this game just because it isn't open world and its an annoying side scroller and whatnot. It's not a bad game. Technically non-canon, but it is a great addition to the Arkhamverse. One specific boss fight rivals many from Arkham Knight and even one or two from Origins.
Pros: Vast world to explore, many collectibles, achievements are well made, fun puzzles and combat, okay story. Little to no bugs encountered.
Cons: Walking from one end of a facility to the other just to get to an objective, to walk all the way back to go to a different facility to acquire a gadget required at that objective and back gets super annoying. The segment before the final boss is super annoying, going to each facility to hit three buttons sucked. It did give me a chance to get collectibles I hadn't gotten yet. No combo take downs, cape stuns can be tricky to pull off. It's all about the flow.
Should you buy this? For steam deck I'd say hell yes. If you have the time and want a play through of a new Arkham game, go for it. If you hate 2.5D games, don't do it. It's not as bad as people make it out to be.
My ranking of Batman: Arkham Origins Blackgate: 6th of the seven Arkham games.
Oh boooooyyyy, this was boring, tedious and monotonous. Everything you loved about Batman games you‘ll hate.
Fighting is boring, detective mode ist annoying, the boss fights are a joke. The story is crap.
Luckily this game was on sale.
Batman arkham origins blackgate is not a arkham game but it is a good game give it a try
Awesome Game! 10/10!
Technically part of the Arkham universe, this title is a 3D take on a 2D platformer. Fun enough, for what it is.
The biggest issue is the combat. Right-clicking to block doesn't work great; I usually had to double-click to get it to work properly. It was awful for the final fight. I ended up using the keyboard keys: J to punch, K to block and L to capestun.
Always good to see games from other platforms on Steam, especially when they are part of a big series. People moan hard about this game being lesser, but they'd moan a whole lot more if they couldn't play it on PC. All these years later, at 80% reduction, what's not to love; it's some more Batman and if you don't enjoy puzzling and slugging your way through it, no biggie at this kind of price. I went in expecting a trainwreck, as per the reviews and am now happily surprised by how enjoyable it is
this is buns
The game is very entertaining. Maybe the game is old but it is very good to play. I enjoyed playing it as it is the first game to try in Batman series. I'm so exciting to play the remaining games on that series.
this is a short game with toned down everything. this was originally a hand held game. with those in mind it is fun for what it is. If you are hoping for something like the main four game then you will be disappointed.
This game was actually pretty good. I had been put off for a while due to its poor reviews but I can now confidently say that the reviews do not match the quality. DO NOT go into this game looking for another arkham game, it just isn't that. Aside from the story beats and world this has basically nothing to do with arkham. What this is, is a fairly good action metriodmavia. The exploration of the three areas is fun and the story is the right length. Aside from a small section right at the end I never felt like my time was being wasted or things were too tedious. The action is okay but its way more about the exploration. It took me 6.4 hours to finish the game with 79% completion. I am confident that if you just want to gun through it you can easily finish the game in 5ish hours. If you are a fan of the arkham world, especially origins, then I would recommend checking out this game, just don't come in expecting an open world adventure.
Two playthroughs in... eh. Not worth the price of time.

Wow, what a disappointment. As a longtime Arkham fan I can say in confidence that this game sucks. Period. For what its worth, it is an admirable attempt at converting the Arkham formula to handheld devices. It includes freeflow combat, predator sections, gadget puzzles, and bosses; all the bells and whistles you'd expect to find. The issue with this game is the implementation of pretty much everything. Combat is janky as hell, feeling stiff and empty as there is no changes to your moveset and you don't have access to quickfire gadgets. Predator sections suffer much the same, being pretty uninteresting and not suiting the 2.5D style at all. The gadgets for the most part are actually pretty good, but needing to stop and scan things constantly is incredibly annoying. The bosses are just variations of the combat and predator sections and are largely forgettable or just outright bad, except for Joker, his fight is actually pretty good. Exploration is pretty woeful as there are plenty of times where you simply won't know what to do or where to go, it is way too easy to get stuck and it can be frustrating. The constant backtracking is also a nightmare, especially towards the end of the game. I won't spoil it, but the last section has you backtrack all over the map 5 times with boring combat sections sprinkled in between. Really the nugget of shit on top of the shit sundae. The game is ultimately a massive slog that I wouldn't even recommend to longtime fans, there's not enough value here to warrant a purchase. If you're really interested just watch a playthrough online, don't waste your time and money on this slop.
Batman Origins Blackgate was an experience equal to getting your skin flayed, and salt poured in the wounds. A failure of epic proportions, with the only saving grace being the cool comic cutscenes, and the fact that its a pretty short game.
I didn't mind the whole 2D metroidvania style all that much, nor did i find the map extremely confusing (its still shit though) apart from some moments. My personal gripe was with the awful and i mean AWFUL combat system and controls in general. Batman does whatever the fuck he wants half the time, hitting the wrong enemy or hitting the air like a delusional schizophrenic. You cant use gadgets, or even special moves except from the classic stun and beatdown, resulting in an extremely boring and most of the time frustrating experience.
The boss "battles" are a complete joke and something id expect in an PS1 kids game. Props to the Joker fight though, for making me laugh out loud to how stupid it is. Not to mention a certain fight where you beat a boss using electricity when in universe he is EMPOWERED BY IT.
The ending also changes a bit by giving you an extra side quest, depending on which major boss you fight last. While its an interesting idea, they just copy paste 5 stuff for you to do and slightly change the way you go about them.
100% not recommended even if you get it for free.
It does not require a High performance PC/ Laptop....... Works on a Intel Pentium......It is simple and entertaining.
So for starters, this game is NOT Arkham Origins. I saw someone bought this thinking it was the deluxe edition. It is not, it is a totally separate game. This game was originally released on the Nintendo 3DS and Playstation Vita in 2013.
It isn't a bad game. The combat is a bit rough compared to the other Arkham games, and it does get kinda repetitive since there is so much backtracking
If your going for the achievements I would recommend following a guide. Because to get 100% you need to playthrough the game 3 times.
Now, if you want to play all of the Arkham games in chronological order, this is the list:
Arkham Origins > Arkham Origins Blackgate (this game) > Arkham Asylum > Arkham City > Arkham Knight
Well, it's the first arkham game that i'll give a negative review. But, there's a catch.
You can't expect this game to be up to par with the main arkham games obviously (i kept my expectations low, and bought on sale just to have the full "arkham collection"), but that is not the reason for not recommending the game. This is basically a mobile version of those games. It works its way around the limitations by setting the game in a 2.5D aspect, simplifying every single aspect of the main line games, from the textures, to the combat, traversal to the gadget gimmicks.
Being a batman fan does help to put a small blind fold on these things, but after sticking through a couple hours i just couldn't manage to enjoy myself.
Map design is confusing and without proper direction its just a mess, making it even worse due to the fact that you need to back track to unlock other gadgets to then go back once more to be able to progress. So yeah, it just becomes boring, redundant and story not being able to entice enough to make you come back to the game, becoming the main reason i can't recommend this game.
i. Love. This. Game. Entirely underrated. It's old school 2-D gameplay and navigation through a new school 3D setting. The faithfulness to the Arkham Saga is comforting. But the real magic is in all the ways that it differs in playstyle. It's as though this Arkham Blackgate title was really the first Arkham game made, say, back in 2000 or something. But it got shelved or lost, and someone discovered it and modernized the graphics. I would play a dozen Batman games like this one.
It’s fun.
Definitely the worst of the Arkham games (not including Suicide Squad), but it's a testament to the quality of the series that it's still very enjoyable so far. In my opinion, the 2.5D works well for the most part, but it isn't fair to compare it to the other Arkham games.
Edit: the cracks are starting to show. The map is very confusing and the controls are jank. I couldn't even leave a vent at one point. Kinda fun but only worth it on sale, even then pretty mediocre.
Absolutely, the worst game I have ever played.
Game just crashes in industrial facility at 63% of completion.
The controls are so bad it's no wonder this thing was erased from DC's arkham canon.
A well done metroidvania game done in 2.5D (making it a bit unique). The controls and mechanics are classic Arkham. Graphics and sound are good. Story is fun. This game was good at keeping players from getting lost (goal and map were well marked).
Would have been nice if the map was true 3D. Nevertheless the map was creatively drawn.
you know, after getting used to the jank i started to think "okay this aint THAT bad" but the final boss fight is literally unplayable (not in the jokey sense its literally unplayable)
This game had potential: the setting along with the 2.5D gameplay could have been a very good idea (especially for the Steam Deck) IF executed correctly.
Unfortunately, for such a game to have such an unresponsive and clunky combat system is a real shame.
I did not finish it and I do not intend to do so.
Buy Arkham Origins Blackgate only on a REAL sale and only if you are a die-hard Batman fan.
I really enjoy this game. I know it has some drawbacks from being 2.5D, but I think it was an interesting concept and I was for the most part pleasantly surprised by the solid game mechanics and attention to artistic detail it was given. I'd say it's worth trying out for Arkham fans.
Metroidvania with lots of backtracking, very bad map and hacky controls.
5/10
after playing Arkahm Asylum this one is even more worse...
6\10
It's not a terrible game, but it has some questionable things. I'm a fan of metroidvania's so I guess that's why I like it a little more than other people. I remember I had this game on my 3DS and hated it. Now in day's, the game's not perfect but it's not too bad. Good game to get on sale and you really like the Arkham games. This game is just pretty Batman Arkham Asylum but in 2.5D.
Edit: Just beat the game, The final fight was terrible and the ending was tedious. the story was pretty good though. Changing my rating to 5.5.
Although this game may not be one of the most popular/successful, it is still a gem within the arkhamverse. This is a game I must not only recommend to any true batman lover at heart, but a game I must also recommend for anyone who hasn't yet played it, but has played the previous titles. I loved every bit of the story that is told, and the interesting 2D/3D gameplay it had to offer. Blackgate is a different type of arkham game, you'll either like because of the fact, or despise.
A fun expansion onto the arkham series.
An awesome side game to the arkham franchise that is a must play for both batman and metroidvania style fans. 8/10
Could be a good game, but it have clunky combat, confusing map, detective mode that is annoying to control and the worst a lot of backtracking. Exploration is decent but bring forced to stay and use detective mode on thing you can use gadget is just tiring.
A bad handheld adaptation of a beloved superhero franchise
Originally released as a handheld game for 3DS and PS Vita, Batman Arkham Origins Blackgate takes everything that made the other Arkham games fun and tries to adapt it into a 2.5D Metroidvania game, but with none of the things that made the series great to begin with and isn't even good on its own merits.
Starting with the combat system, which was a lot of fun in the other games but is terrible here. Moves are limited to a basic punch, cape stun, redirect and counter. No special takedowns, no quickfire gadgets and no upgrades - what you have at the start of the game is all you get. There's no XP system and no levelling up, which also makes the combo system completely useless so there's no incentive to improve or master the combat whatsoever outside of one achievement that requires you to get a x100 hit combo.
Attacks don't have any impact, either. In the other games, you could feel every attack with satisfying sound effects and knock back to give that feeling of being a superhero. But here, it just feels like plastic dolls fighting each other. It's also really difficult to target the enemies you want which only happened occasionally in the other games but it happens all the time here.
Contrary to popular belief, enemies do in fact respawn once you leave an area and return to it later. This might seem like it makes backtracking a bit more interesting since you have to engage with the combat mechanics, but since the combat is boring and uninteresting it only adds to the tedium of the experience. You're also required to defeat all enemies to progress as the screen locks during combat so you can't just skip past them either.
Stealth is incredibly simplified and shallow, to the point where they may as well not even exist at all. You only get silent takedowns and the occasional ledge takedown; some predator rooms have distractions like lights and alarms, but even then, it's nothing compared to all the stuff you were able to do in the other games like breakable walls or knockout smashes. There aren't even any enemies with mines or jammers, so these sections barely evolve past the beginning.
The graphics aren't very good either. It's about on par with an ugly PS2 game, with the character models looking like they're made of plastic and a lot of the textures appear very blurry and there are barely any graphical settings at all. Outside of that, the PC port is fine. Even when run at the highest resolution supported (1920x1080) the game ran at 60FPS with barely any slowdown or technical issues, and is the best way to play this game so none of my issues come from the port, but rather the game itself. I never ran into any bugs or glitches, but that on its own isn't impressive in the slightest.
The cutscenes are interesting at the very least. They use a cartoon art style and it works well as its own thing, along with some pretty good voice acting for the most part. While the story is nothing special, the cutscene presentation and voice overs are some of the very few redeeming qualities this game has going for it and is a step above certain other handheld games that only used text and/or character portraits to tell its story.
This game does just about everything it can to make itself longer and pad out the length of the game. Unlike the other games where you could use gadgets on environmental objects whenever you wanted without breaking the flow, in this game, you have to enter Detective Mode, use the analyser and scan objects manually before you're allowed to do anything with them which takes about two seconds each time. You also cannot move while scanning. None of these issues existed in the other games.
This is especially an issue with the backtracking as well. Multiple times, the game will constantly have you going back to previous areas you've already been in which is a standard for Metroidvania games, but lacks engaging gameplay as all you do is hold run and the direction you want to go almost the entire time, to the point where they put spikes to hurt you if you don't roll over them just to keep you awake while playing, but this game has regenerating health and you take so little damage you may as well run through them.
There are upgrades to find in crates, but aside from armour which increases your maximum health, they're all completely useless. I have no idea how Rush mode works in combat, nor do I know what it does to enhance combat in any way. Same with the gauntlets - they're supposed to increase melee damage, but I never noticed the difference compared to my starting power, so collecting upgrades isn't satisfying at all.
What could've been a 3-4 hour game without the padding quickly turns into an 8-10 hour game. Even worse is that if you want to 100% this game, you have to play through it 3 times, with each playthrough saving one of the bosses for last and you get a slightly different end-game "distraction" that adds even more backtracking right before the final boss and each one plays out the exact same way with a slightly different ending depending on who you beat last, which makes me wonder why we couldn't just do all of these or a combination of each in a single playthrough, especially when New Game Plus doesn't do anything to make the game more difficult nor do any of your gadgets or upgrades carry over.
The bosses were the highlight of Arkham Origins, but in Blackgate, they're by far the worst bosses the series has seen. Most of these are very basic and require little strategy. The Joker is the best fight in the game and makes decent use of the Line Launcher. The Black Tiger fight is re-used for both Catwoman battles and it's almost the exact same every time. Deadshot has an interesting idea that's underdeveloped, while Solomon Grundy can be easily beaten in 30 seconds. Black Mask is easily defeated with a single takedown. By far the worst part of the game is The Penguin, who has an incredibly frustrating stealth section.
If you loved the challenge maps from the other games, they are also nowhere to be seen in this game. Not that I would want them with combat and stealth this simple and repetitive, but it also means there's not nearly as much content as the other games, which is a huge letdown. Once you're done with the main story, that's pretty much it.
Obviously, this was a handheld game so it might not be reasonable to expect the same level of quality as the main series games on home consoles or PC. However, there are plenty of good handheld games. Resident Evil Revelations on the 3DS and GTA Vice City Stories on PSP are two such games that were made with the limitations of a handheld in mind but still retain a lot of what made the main series' games good to the point where they still felt right at home on the big screen when they got ported to consoles. These games also had plenty of content to keep players busy for a long time, so being a handheld game isn't an excuse for this game to be as bad as it is.
There are also much better designed Metroidvania games on Steam that respect your time a lot more, with Ori and the Blind Forest, Islets and Yoku's Island Express just to name a few. Even if you're looking for a Metroidvania game where you play as Batman, Arkham Asylum is right there - go play that instead:

Unless you're a massive fan of the series that has to fully complete every single Arkham game, you can skip this one. It's not even worth picking up on discount as it only ever goes on sale when all the other Arkham games do as well. This game isn't just bad, it's boring, and I would much rather play a bad game like Superman 64 over a boring one like this. Stick with the real Arkham Origins and avoid this one.
Overall not a bad experience. I found the story bare bones combat was okay. Only major bad experience i had was the last section of the game just found it very tedious.
Worth picking up on deep discount.
