Well i'm late to the party, and I'm also not the biggest Batman fan out there, but these games are definitely pretty cool and have a good story. I bought all 4 of them a couple years ago and beat asylum last year, so now I decided to play Arkham City GOTY. I'm not doing all the fatiguing riddles etc, but I'm just playing to experience the main story. Overall I am enjoying it.
It is almost 15 years old at this point, but the original graphics have held up decently. I installed an HD mod pack, but really didn't notice a huge improvement (I am sure there was some). Also because it is a little old school, it doesn't hold your hand as far as quest markers on the map, so I am finding it a bit of a strain to find my objective sometimes, but I guess that is part of the charm!!
fun game, main story good, dlc was quick romp
Best Arkham game imo. You can say the story is written with love and has a fulfilling end. Graphics didnt bother me at all even after 13 years.
Masterpiece fr. The graphics still holds up for a 12+ year old game. The combat was a huge jump from asylum. And it dont think the combat can get any better. Boss fights again were INSANE. Story was insane too. Theres a reason everyone says this the BEST arkham game from the series. This is basically arkham asylum but waaaay better. The only downsight i can find in the game are the side missions. But other than that, W game.
The story, and gameplay are so immersive. The mix of the open world and the combo system during fights are so fluid.
It is a fun romp but some of the extra content starts to feel a little bit of a drag after a while
Excellent game love the story but the side missions has no meaning to the story really, if they add extra flavour to the story that would be good cause the players also motivated for going into the side missions
Dope ass game. Great story and boss battles, good gameplay, and considering the time of release, the graphics are fine I guess (2011). I Don't have alot of negative stuff to say about this game tbh, awesome experience. Playing the entire series is a must! Asylum, city, orgins, knight.
Review of Batman: Arkham City
Rating: 0 out of 5
This game is a poorly executed mess that leaves nothing but frustration.
1. Hitboxes:
The hitboxes of the main character are clearly larger than the character model. This is evident when dodging knife attacks or punches from enemies. Even when they visibly miss and hit the air, damage is still applied to the player. This is unacceptable and ruins the combat experience.
2. Finisher Animations:
The finishing move animations are deliberately slow, allowing enemies to close the distance and attack during the sequence. This feels intentional and makes combat frustrating, especially since these slow animations make it impossible to react in time.
3. Combos and Controls:
Some combos work only intermittently, and the game often fails to register key inputs properly. The control system feels clunky and unresponsive, significantly affecting the flow of gameplay.
4. Harley Quinn's Revenge DLC:
The DLC is riddled with poorly implemented scripts. Enemies deal excessive damage to your armor, far more than in the main game. Sniper and gun-wielding enemies seem overpowered, with much higher health compared to their counterparts in the base game. Even weaker characters like Robin struggle to take down enemies who, logically, should fall after just a few hits.
5. Electro-Baton NPCs:
The design of enemies with electric batons is nonsensical. Even when you strike them in a way that should disarm them, they somehow manage to deal damage instead. The idea of needing to flank these enemies for a takedown is absurd and unnecessary.
6. Weapon Retention:
Enemies holding guns or batons never drop their weapons, no matter how hard you hit them. This completely breaks immersion, as weapons should logically be dropped after a significant hit or during a takedown animation.
7. General Gameplay:
The overall controls are poorly optimized. Combat and movement feel unpolished, leading to a frustrating and unsatisfying experience.
Conclusion:
Batman: Arkham City is a disaster in terms of gameplay mechanics and design choices. From broken hitboxes to nonsensical combat mechanics, this game fails on every level. It’s hard to believe this was the product of a professional development team. Avoid this game at all costs.
Game almost 13 years old but still rocks! Incredible variety of all villains from this universe, main missions are interesting, but the fun and slightly mindblowns begins with :riddle: challenges, trophies hunt and enigmas. Would like to recommend to all Batman and non-Batman fans because this is a masterclass game! :batarang:
Great sequel. Same gameplay, more enjoyable story and turned from linear game into a semi open world game. 8/10
Replaying after finishing it several times 13yrs ago..
Still holds up as one of the best superhero games ever.. the gameplay does wear out and gets a little repetitive by the end, but you will certainly get your money's worth long before you feel that..
i only wish ng+ was a little more interesting with more complex and unforgiving concepts all throughout (the combat is fine, but predator missions feel a little boring) since you already have all the gadgets and built up knowledge of how to handle encounters
great story, great gameplay, riddler's riddles bit repetitive and boring, actually i think it's too much
TLDR: This is the second game in the Batman Arkham series. The main story is great. there are a lot of collectibles with rewards ranging from concept art to tape recordings like from the first game. There is also a lot of additional non-story content provided by challenges if you are into that. Graphics hold up pretty well. I only crashed twice and just reopening the game fixed it. I did not encounter any bugs.
Story: The story takes place after Arkham Asylum and follows Quincy Sharp's rise from Warden of Arkham Asylum to mayor of Gotham. He pushes for a new criminal facility to place all their bad guys in and lock them off from the good people of Gotham. Bruce Wayne campaigns against this and ends up being placed in the CIty for this as a political prisoner. He then goes about being Batman in this crime infested city prison dealing with multiple recurring villains from the first game while also finding new adversaries with their own motives. The story is pretty deep and pulls some fast ones on you at times. The game includes side stories along with the main plot that play off the first game and set up new stories to occur in the future. I thoroughly enjoyed it. 9/10
Gameplay: This game is open world with tons of collectibles to be gotten along the way along with riddles to solve. The combat is a continuation of the combat system from the first game where the flow of combat is more important than button mashing. It is much smoother and I personally enjoyed it more than the first game. The game also has your typical side stories common in any open world game. Some are satisfying and new while others are continuations of the previous game. There is also a challenge mode outside of the story mode to test your skills and add content if you really like the combat. 8/10
Graphics: Good for a game made in 2011, still holds up well today.
Bugs: I had two crashes that were self-resolved when restarting the game, and did not experience any gameplay bugs.
Conclusion: Batman Arkham City is a great successor to Batman Arkham Asylum. It improves on the combat system, has a more complex story, features great twists and turns, and has more content than the first game. It still holds up well today and is even better than a majority of new AAA titles. Definitely a great buy.
An amazing Batman game with so much to do after you're done with the main story. Throughout the story you'll play as Batman and Catwoman. A DLC will allow you to play as Robin. Highly recommend for gamers and a must have for Batman fans.
This game is too perfect to describe , it as all the essence of the batman straight form the comics . The character designs are top notch . The combact moves , the gadgets all are perfect . The game makes me feels like batman , it also has side quest and puzzle to solve. This is second batman game after "Batman arkham asylum" and it doesn't fails to continue the story of this series. the asylum had its ups and down but this game filled all its holes and the dlc of this games is also good. i will definitely recommend to give a try .
best game ever made and i will back it up in ever conversation such joy i get seeing my favorite vigilante in action and its been too long an i need another one i know it may never happen but i need to put this in existence so that it does i miss it so much . thank you rocksteady for being apart of my childhood
I think there's a case to be made that this should be a required game for all people to play. It's just that fucking good
Got it as part of a bundle on sale.
Asylum was worth it, and City improved on it in almost every aspect.
Riddler is tediously annoying.
Batman: Arkham City is one of the most immersive and well-crafted superhero games I’ve ever played. The developers managed to combine an engaging story, fluid combat, and an atmospheric open-world setting to create something truly special. From the moment the game starts, you feel like you’re stepping into Batman’s world. The visuals capture the gritty and dark tone of Gotham perfectly, and the voice acting is top-notch, with Kevin Conroy as Batman and Mark Hamill as the Joker bringing their characters to life in the best possible way.
The story starts with Bruce Wayne being captured and thrown into Arkham City, a massive prison district where chaos rules. You’re immediately pulled into a mystery surrounding Hugo Strange and his ominous "Protocol 10," which keeps you guessing until the very end. Along the way, you encounter some of Batman’s most iconic villains, including Penguin, Two-Face, Mr. Freeze, and Ra’s al Ghul. Each character feels true to their comic book roots, and their presence adds depth to the overall narrative. The Joker’s role is especially memorable, as his relationship with Batman takes center stage in a way that is both emotional and intense.
The combat system is one of the highlights of the game. It’s simple to learn but incredibly satisfying. Every punch, counter, and gadget use feels impactful. The flow of the combat is seamless, and as you face larger groups of enemies, you’ll need to master your timing and think strategically. However, some of the enemy encounters can be quite challenging, especially when armed thugs with shields or stun batons are thrown into the mix. The stealth sections, where you use Predator tactics to take down armed enemies silently, are equally fun but require patience and careful planning.
Exploring Arkham City is another major part of the game. The open-world design allows you to glide through the city, grappling from rooftop to rooftop, while discovering side missions and collectibles. These side missions often feature other villains like Deadshot, Zsasz, and the Riddler. Speaking of the Riddler, his trophies and challenges are a huge part of the game, and completing them all is no small task.
One of the biggest challenges I faced was completing all the Riddler trophies and puzzles. Some of them require precision gliding, timed use of gadgets, or solving complex environmental puzzles. It’s easy to get stuck on a few of them, especially when the solution isn’t obvious. Then there are the combat and Predator challenges in the Riddler’s Revenge mode. Getting all three medals on every challenge took a lot of retries and patience. The combat challenges test your ability to maintain high combos and use every tool in Batman’s arsenal effectively, while the Predator challenges require creative thinking to take down enemies in specific ways.
Another tough moment was mastering the boss fights. Mr. Freeze’s fight stands out as one of the most creative and challenging encounters. You can’t use the same attack twice, so you’re forced to think on your feet and adapt your tactics. The final sections of the game also ramp up the difficulty, throwing waves of enemies at you while keeping the stakes high in the story.
Overall, Batman: Arkham City is a masterpiece that balances storytelling, gameplay, and atmosphere perfectly. Despite the challenges I faced, like completing all the achievements and solving those tricky Riddler puzzles, every moment felt rewarding. The game truly makes you feel like Batman, and that’s the highest praise I can give. It’s a must-play for any fan of the character or anyone who loves action-adventure games.
Arkham City is a great successor and a great game to Arkham Asylum and it's no wonder why a lot of people say that this is the best Arkham game overall compared to the other games.
The graphics in this game feel like it has aged very well and is a step-up from Arkham Asylum, considering it's a game that was released in 2012.
If you played Arkham Asylum before (like me), you'll easily have a fun time with controls since it's basically Arkham Asylum but it's more improved. Batman has some cool new gadgets that will help you along the way.
Speaking of new, the game introduces side missions which varies in terms of what you need to do. I find the side missions to be fun and interesting while also adding more to the lore with the characters that you meet in those side missions.
In addition to lore, Riddler trophies are back and they are more complex than ever before. There were some trophies that gave me a challenge but there were also some that were particularly easy. The more you collect them, the more lore and concept artwork for the game you'll unlock.
We've got a bigger map than before, that allows Batman to traverse through Arkham City compared to the claustrophobic island that is Arkham Asylum.
Some complaints that I have is that this game could have been optimized better. In order to play with a high refresh rate monitor, you'd have to go to benchmark mode in the settings every single time. There are moments where the game lags and you would really notice it. The only notable points of the game lagging being if you were going place to place using your grapnel gun.
Additionally, my game only crashed one time but that's ok for me.
There was only one notable glitch that I had. There was one glitch where I tried to get a Riddler trophy underneath a minecart at the Steel Mill but the minecart wouldn't budge but then I noticed it was moving slowly. I figured that it might have something to do with the refresh rate of my monitor and how it changes the physics of the game.
All in all, I would say that this is THE Batman game to play. Aside from the complaints that I had, this game is a great successor from Arkham Asylum and I really enjoyed the game. From the story, setting, graphics, and controls, this game basically improved on what made Arkham Asylum great and pushes the envelope further and then some.
Awesome story, game doesn't feel dated at all. I wish I had played this series when it first came out. Just as good as the first game.
Really fun, upgrade over Arkham Asylum. I though the introduction of new playable characters was cool but I honestly only wanted to play as Batman. I thought this game would take longer to beat but I rolled credits in about 12 hours even doing a handful of side quests.
very good i speedrunned it and almost got world record but lost the footage
I'd rather be injected with titan toxin, get my back broken by bane and shot by harley quinn than to play the catwoman DLC, ITS HORRIBLE
this game is so fun so realistc but it can be vary hard so be prpared
I loved this game the story was perfect with joker posing batman to mr freeze trying to kill you would play again.
Arkham City is a nice step up from Arkham Asylum. The premise of the story is pretty cool as well, with turning a section of Gotham City into a new prison after the events of the first game. Catwoman is also a fun character to play as, but her final mission wasn't thought out very well.
Older game, but if you like Batman at all you will love this game.
I spent 43 hours on it including the Harley Quinn DLC, Collected all the Riddler Trophies and Riddles etc, and still only 70% complete as I haven't done the challenges. But loved every minute of it. Especially getting to play as some of the other characters from the Batman story. Highly recommend it.
perfect game except FUCKING HATE CATWOMAN FUCKING DUMB FUCKING ANNOYING STEALTH I FUCKING HATE CAMPAIGN GET RID OF THAT SHIT I HATE IT, TOP OF THE WORLD EXTREME, END OF THE LINE EXTREME PISS OFF AND FUCK THOSE CAMPAIGNS
Batman: Arkham City is a blend of engaging storytelling and smooth combat. The action-packed narrative keeps you hooked from start to finish, while the combat system, combined with a lot of gadgets, allows for strategic and satisfying gameplay. The Riddler challenges are a standout feature, offering a tough but rewarding test of your problem-solving skills. It’s a must-play for fans of the Dark Knight and action-adventure games alike.
very subtle story and fun gameplay
very interesting game story also super
An Amazing Sequel to an already amazing Batman game the best story some good bosses good side missions for the most part great pacing the build up to the finale is amazing hardest game to get all achievements fun to speedrun and I'm still learning new speedrun strats and things about the game after playing it on the ps3 in 2011
An awesome story with an all star voice cast that has brought me back a decade later, the fighting style is a little repettitve at times but you can be creative. Great game, worth the purchase.
I am going to leave a review intended for those who did not play this game yet and those who played it on console reconsidering buying this game.
Never played: This is an easy recommendation. 10/10. If you are new to the trilogy (technically 4 games in the series but rocksteady trilogy), play asylum first for the events in this game require the knowledge of the first game. The story in this game is incredible, graphics are amazing and aged like wine. Combat and stealth in this game set the framework for how the spiderman trilogy did their games. Long story short, this game is incredible and a huge recommendation for anyone who is willing to play asylum first to get into one of the best superhero games to date (literally).
Played on console: If you played this game on console, I would still recommend this game. The game is unfortunately locked at 60 fps, but it beats the 30 fps when locked on console. So you are getting double the performance. As far as graphics goes? Assuming you have 1440p or higher, this game is definitely a great to play as the graphics are noticeably improved with other elements in the game to add to the atmosphere. (Rugs moving around the room as you fight, papers and leaves flying along the ground as you move through them). The only complaint is that there were notable and very aggressive frame drops (as low as 8 in severe cases), but a restart on my computer resolved this issue and barely ran into it again.
TL;DR for console players: getting double the frames and slight graphical improvements from the console port.
this game really makes you FEEL like spiderman
jokes aside really good game, worth it especially on sale
This game is awesome. Buy the whole series it is kinda short but definitley a fun series.
Incredible story and gameplay. The game is just peak.
awesome game, wouldn't be able to tell the game is 10+ year old. story is awesome, some side quests are awesome, although the riddler one is insane. definitely recommend!
From purely gameplay alone, this is the Batman game, it doesn't get any better, and I mean that in the best way possible.
If you take the story as it comes and don't piece the entire thing together, (i.e. don't think about it) you get a very awesome experience. If you actually step back and look at wtf is going on, none of it makes any sense at all. I'm assuming they didn't go with the entirety of Gotham because this still had to run on the Xbox 360, and they fit the story around the technical limitations, so whatever, its awesome, you feel like Batman, just like in the first game.
Still an absolute classic and the best of the Arkham series.
Rocksteady improves on the successful fundamentals they introduced in Arkham Asylum in every way and creates a story worthy of one of the animated movies. So many villains, so little time - yet it never feels drawn out which is an impressive feat.
The combat, graphics and gadgets are improved on immensely and both combat and traversal are greatly improved over the first instalment. Just as well, as the environment of Arkham City requires it to be a much smoother experience than Asylum's.
While the DLCs are a welcome and generally enjoyable addition, the batsuits are mostly pretty forgettable. The noteable exception being the Batman Beyond batsuit - which fits the game perfectly and looks great. Sadly they don't show up in the scripted cutscenes but it's a minor gripe.
Overall, this is still the quintessential Batman experience, and the high-watermark for the character in gaming, which has yet to be topped.
Amazing story and amazing gameplay, must try arkham series.
Very good game, even now. I like the storyline despite not having played the full game yet.
Impossible to begin playing. I have spent 13 hours with every method I could find and am still not able to play this game.

Incredible game, loved every second. This game blows Asylum completely out of the water, i am currently torn on which game is better, city or origins.
one of the best games I've ever played. It's incredible, the story, the setting, side quests, characters, and the models are amazing. 10/10
A lot more fun than Asylum. More world to explore and the combat is the same which makes fighting enemies still exciting. And the fact that you get to play as Catwoman just makes things even better.
been stuck on the elevator because it doesnt move an inch when on a mission on finding mr freeze literally first main mission with the first boss game is good just so many bugs and glitches makes u hate the game i quit gave u cuz it didnt move
