STORY
[1 THE BEGINNING]
In the beginning there was the formless warm gray.
There was neither light nor darkness, nor form nor striving.
Yet in time, there was the slightest movement in the gray.
So slowly at first, that none might notice, even had there been one to watch.
Over eons of uncounted time, the gray gathered itself in a single place.
A thing like a smooth gray egg coalesced, then shrunk and contracted until in an explosive burst,
The Two were born: One of Light, the Other of Darkness.
The Great Lovers, Lakana the White, Goddess of Light and Order, and
Visaku the Black, God of Darkness and Chaos, blossomed forth into the universe.
[2 THE FIRST CHILDREN]
In the fullness of time, the Two begat the First Children. The Firstborn was enigmatic.
They named him Davanu, and tall and proud,
Crowned with mighty horns and lusting always for power.
Red is his color.
Next in their line was Da’lea the Green, joyful and merciful,
Prone to rapid change in mood, but mighty in her generosity and mirth.
Finally, in a pregnancy that nearly killed Lakana were born the Four:
Ravanyx the Golden, fiery in both temperament and appearance;
Vaya the color of Sky, fast and effortless in motion, controlled by none;
Nitluru the Brown, dwarfed and sturdy, slow to anger, but mighty in wrath;
And Tagaryl, green like the Sea, cold and deep, filled with secrets...

Unfortunately this game is broken and abandoned. When I purchased this game about 3 years ago it was OK. Early access definitely, but OK. Then about 12 months ago the devs loaded their latest update and disappeared.
The latest update broke a lot of things that used to work, including game saves so you can play a significantly reduced game that you may or may not be able to save.
If you look at the discussions you will see that the latest entries are almost 12 months old, by players pointing out the game is broken and that there has been zero response from the Devs.
A definite don't buy from me.
After almost a year without any news, it seems that developer has abandoned the game so I cannot recommend this game anymore plus the fact that the last update makes the game unplayable. My old review follows.
After rereading the comment in the last update from the developer, I decide to change my review to positive to give him the chance to finish the game. The game is not bad and has potential to be very good but with the last update in April, the developer has put new bugs in the game (corrupt saves, no mining anymore except for gold, creatures stuck on walls, etc.). I post that in the forum and email him about those problems and have gotten no response yet. You can still build things but it will be harder to craft higher items without mining, you will probably have to buy them from the merchant. And you will have to exit the game using STOP from the steam library (Alt-tab to switch) to not corrupt the save. Also, the developer should improve how the combat with enemy creatures work. The game is not very expansive only $10.00, and the next update should be in December.
I brought 2/3 years ago and it's was just soo buggy I couldn't play it, so I thought I'd try again a couple of years later and to be honest it's still buggy! I don't think this game will ever get fixed and I've lost all hope for it. It did have loads of potential but I feel the developers have just lost interest in the game and to be honest I don't think the game did well in the market as much as they wanted it to. SO please don't waste your money their are much better games out there than this one.
Edit: 10/20/20
Well, sorry to say I'm changing my review to a thumbs down for now. As to why, it comes down to communication. The devs don't appear to be engaged with their community at all currently. Last update to the game was 6 months ago and I've caught nary a word from them since. As I state in my original review small indi devs like this deserve a lot of slack but I can't maintain good faith in a project when people are silent.
From the forums I glean that the devs are tired from constant negative feedback which I think is understandable given how genuinely small indi projects are treated on Steam. None the less, it's the obligation of the devs to stay in touch with their backers. I can understand limiting exposure to unconstructive criticism but radio silence isn't acceptable. The very least good faith backers deserve is communication.
I hope the devs are doing alright, the project moves forward and they find a balance that lets them be involved with their supporters. Until I see movement though, I have to recommend against supporting the project.

Original review:
I'm giving this game a positive review really for one specific reason, which I'll detail below.
Before that, let me say right out the gate that the game is still pretty darn rough.
If I were giving this review just on the game as it exists, it would be a thumbs down.
It has bugs, crashes, lack of content and general clunkiness. The game needs a lot of work still.
As a product, I can't recommend it in its current state.
Why I'm giving it a thumbs up anyway is because I see what it's trying to be and also because this is the kind of developer that deserves a lot of slack. I bought the game the day it came out because I loved the concept and I've checked in on it every once in a great while since. I see they've regularly made
updates to the game and playing today I see a lot of progress.
In a nutshell, I'm not so much recommending the game as I am the potential. The developer has a really great idea and they've shown they're the type to keep working on the project. Kenshi took almost 6 years but look at it now, one of the few great success stories from the launch of Early Access on steam. That term, Early Access, has become so over used, exploited, homogenized and just outright abused that I can't really blame people for not thinking of it as much more than saying a game isn't finished yet. However, that's not what it was supposed to be for. What it was supposed to be for was projects like this one. It was meant for truly small, indi devs who have a great game idea and the grit to see it made even if that takes every weekend for the next 5 years. This game is one of the rare projects that actually belong in the Early Access category as it was originally intended.
So if you like the concept and approve of the update history as I do, then consider giving the game a buy to support the developers attempt to bring it to life. The concept is one I'd like to see pursued and if brought to a good state could be an amazing entry in the genre. The developer has evidenced their ability to stick with the project and keep it moving forward making them deserving of at least a little good faith.
TLDR: I support the endeavor, not the current product. If you're looking to buy a product, wish list and check back later. If you're interested in supporting a hard working indi dev with a great idea, consider giving it a buy to support their project.
After playing Astral Terra, I decided have really enjoyed this game and it'd be nice to see more people enjoying it too. I started the game up and gave it a go for myself. I went into it with an open mind, knowing the game is still in alpha stages at this point. I had the options to play single player or multiplayer, but I stuck to playing solo. I created my character and chose to be a Dwarf, though I could have been a Fey, which are some kind of woodland type of elf, or a Dark Elf. As the game is still in alpha, there wasn't much character customisation, but there was a tab saying there is more to come.
Before I started playing this game I was excited to try out the terraforming. I've not played a base building/survival game where I was given the option to do this before. It's safe to say I wasn't let down by this feature as it was as fun as it looks. I spent a solid half an hour building an underground base with the tool. It was really cool. I can see endless designs being created using the feature by some talented individuals.
I moved onto building myself a little base above ground after playing around with the terraforming. This is done by collecting wood and stone, then refining those materials to build foundations and walls etc. It was very basic, but so is every house I build on games where you build! The building mechanics however, as well as the rest of the games controls, has a learning curve to it. Everything feels a little clunky to start. I looked past this though due to the game being in early access.
The game allows you to fight monsters, craft items, level up skills and survive. I never did much fighting as I have been too busy building and overusing the terraforming!
There's some fun gameplay to be had and will only get better. The devs are active on putting more content into this game so it's definitely worth keeping and eye on.
The game as some good potential and is already on the right track to being a brilliant survival game. I'd say if the sandbox genre is your kind of game then pick it up. It's cheap, has some nice graphics and with the devs constantly working on it you can expect more content to arrive!
I will give you a quick summary. NO just NO!
Game is super early access and is borderline broken. Game mechanics are messed up.
It's VERY easy to get stuck in places.
Also seems the game has been abandoned and if it's not, it may as well be.
Maybe try again in a year or so if they are still around. but until then, don't spend money on this
my overall rating on this hot mess is 2/10 only because I thought the monsters looked cool.
To the Developers: why do you even keep going on a game that is so broken? I have stone in my inventory, can't refine it. Keeps saying I don't have enough. Fork you,,,,I have 50+ in my inventory. I can't even set my game resolution to my default screen rez. game just is buggy as all get at. You can keep my $.$$ and stick it in the appropriate place.
DO NOT BUY THIS GAME. It's broken and the most broken i've seen an early access game in years.
This game has been flooded with unfair reviews!
Yes, it is still in Early Access but if you actually invest time playing it
you will find that it has quite a bit of fun content, and mostly bug free!
The developers are very active with the community and take all feedback seriously!
The gameplay is where it's all at and I can tell you that as a internal tester you will be
quite pleased to see what is coming in the future in regards to the gameplay aspects!
So in closing I would just like to say that--> "Do Not Base Your Purchase of a Game solely on it's Reviews!"...
Indie games often get judged poorly and Astral Terra seems to be one of those titles that are getting unfair negative reactions.
Personally, I found this open world game charming: the soundtrack has the most soothing songs I've heard in a game in quite a while; the dynamics are unique by mixing RPG aspects with voxelated building tools. Also, the world is huge and beautiful.
Of course, the graphics don't have the quality of an AAA title, but indie devs don't have high budgets so it makes no sense to make this type of comparisons. Even though, you can see this small team has put a lot of effort on making a functional and aesthetically pleasing customizable land for players to enjoy and expand by using their own imagination. There are things that could be improved, such as adding more races and outfits, but I'm sure they'll add those elements in future updates. Overall, this game was a pleasant surprise for me and I find it pretty underrated.
Meh... I like it but I'm also easy to please. No crashes on my PC or laptop though the FPS on laptop is low(I expected this though). I like some of the building and RPG features but the game still lacks in the content area. Some controls are pretty standard while others take some time getting used to. There is a little tip UI on the tools so that helped. Get it on sale if interested, probably not enough game here for the full $15 but $10 might be fair. I wish they would take some of the mechanics from Creativerse - if they could make the control more smooth and add more content I think that would be good. I like the look of the game, hopefully they can spend some more time on the mechanics.
You cant do anything in it..can't even have friends join...when you try and harvest a tree it says you need a hatchet and you have it in your hand??? or you just stand there and do nothing....I waisted money on this game for me and the Hubby to play together and we yet to be able to..and in single player well thats just as much a joke as the rest is.....DONT PAY FOR THIS CRAP GAME!
EA. Jury is still out.
Hard to place blocks in its current state but you can build right away. Doesnt seem to be any requirement for ingredients yet.
The blocks all look really nice.
Otherwise it seems to still be in alpha stage. It crashes frequently. Laggy as hell.
I built a pond with the terra forming tools, it was pretty cool.
Completely unplayable!
1st Game :
My cursor was locked to a small area of the character creation screen. I couldn't click on anything and had to kill the game in Task Manager.
2nd Game:
Got past the character creation, but game locked up on loading. Had to kill it in TM again.
4th, 5th, 6th, 7th games:
Spawned below the earth each time, couldn't move, couldn't do anything, but fall. Even though I was in window mode, cursor was locked to screen. Hit crtl-esc, tried to close the window, cursor got locked back to screen again. Had to kill it in TM.
Also each time I went back into the game , I had to redo my settings, since nothing got saved.
9th Game:
Took atleast 5 minutes to create the world. Once again I spawned under the world and couldn't do anything. Also learned that once you pull up the help menu you can't close it, and then you can't do anything but exit out of the game.
10th game:
Same problem as 1st game.
11th game:
Was able to play, but no sound. Was unable to havest any resources what so ever.
Gave up at this point and requested a refund
This game is way too EA to even be on Steam! It's just unplayable.
Added Note:
You're selling your game here on Steam. Therefore you get rated on how it currently is, not how you think it will be.
Update: I was happy to get this game refunded. I had a lot of gammer mistakes, I was extremely annoyed at buying this game and finding it in this sorry state. Also removed my foul language.
Wow, amazing, I can't wait to see what the developer will do next. ... Because they cannot possibly do worse than what they've already done. I never thought I'd be saying this but (and I do believe Jim Sterling would agree with me on this) ... I would actually rather play a game by Digital Homicide than to play this fucking piece of shit. Astral Terra makes Forsaken Uprising look like a limitless budget, AAA title by Hideo Kojima, starring Brad Pitt. WARNING: DO NOT FUCKING BUY THIS GAME! If you already made the terrible choice of buying this "game," try to get a refund immediately. I thought the fluid simulation would be worth it, if you get the game, you will see that it is not (not that the fluid simulation itself doesn't function, it does even with minimum specs) ... if you can even get your ugly character to stop floating under the terrain to use its ridiculously clunky, non-standard controls in order to navigate to or create a water source, ... just before it crashes. Astral Terra could be thee single worst thing that mankind has ever produced, it had me looking for the "HELL NO" buttons under the question "Do you recommend this game?" but there wasn't one, there was only "No." with the closest available finger to what the game actually deserves being but a mere thumbs down instead of what I wanted to rate it.

This game starts out with some very fine graphics, though, that may be where all of the good things end.
The controls for this game, especially in reguards to creation/editing are very much a pain to mess with. It seems more like the creator of this game decided to let the players have a go at the actual game engine/creation mechanics, instead of actually finishing the game and all of it's mechanics.
The basic crafting seems to be difficult to get a handle on, to the point that there are no real tutorials in game or explination of how to do anything. It's basically trial and error.
The combat system is juvinile at best, with the favor being in the enemies hands it seems. I can recall old 80's nes games which had a more advanced and balanced combat system over this one's pick something and hope it fires/works/or even selects during combat.
Building buildings, I can't say much about this since I coudl only ever manage to get some corners made and even then it was increasingly difficult to place/stack them. The construction system of this game is. . .for lack of better words, crap.
The creation menu, well, if I wanted to build a game world from scratch and were using a game editor interface then this would be fine. But, I doubt anyone enters into a game/game world and expects to have to actually make roads, cities, etc all on their own because the creators didn't take the time to set anything up.
The conversation/store/npc system is. . .severely lacking. You can't tell friend from foe, and typically when trying to talk to an npc you simply just swing at them.
As for money, well, no idea how you come across that. So, buying the over priced things at the one or two npc's I managed to find were impossible. They would sell you things but would buy nothing, so, you can get the idea out of your head that there is any real economy with in this game.
Movement and navigation is choppy at best, controls aren't set up for any sort of easy navigation, and camera views are more of a pain to adjust than moving.
4 years, this pos is still listed as early access. Best not to waste your money, you wont get it back due to steams crappy support.
A very promising game. I just got it so I'm still exploring what I can do but so far I am liking what I am seeing. The Terrain generation is really good. Very alien world meet fantasy. The Graphics are really nice. Kudo's on this game. Well worth checking out and supporting.
Update: at this time I wouldn't suggest getting this game until they fix the major bugs , crashing and freezing issues. Still Alot of work to do on this game.
so this game has some potential. i dont think i can recommend it right now. my character kept getting stuck in harvesting mode, still no mouse view while roaming around without having to hold down right mouse button, you cant remap the keys, and you can terraform like a god when you should have to you earn that stuff. if you like the "click on item to harvest or attack" deal then you might like this game. the world is beautiful and the idea is great but still has a lot to get done.
Jan 12 2016
Very, very early state of game. It has potential to be interesting. Don't expect a "Professional" product, it is very much 'I made this'. But that may change as the game evolves.
Although it has 'single player' mode, you do have to create an account, then login to their online server & then you can create your own personal 'room' with a password
Still needs a lot of work, but it is playable (as in you can do stuff)
The only reason I stopped exploring the game after about 30 minutes was due to motion sickness caused by the game. Not quite sure what it is causing it, but I can't play with the game in the state it is in.
I like supporting Dev teams as they create their dream, it's something not everyone can do.
Can I recommend it? Not really unless you wan to support development. Maybe Wait and see how it develops in the future.
This is very very, very early access...
I only see myself playing this game in 2-3 years from now,
if it's still alive by then, but I fear I just lost 12 bucks on this one.
edit april 13 2020 :
If the Dev update throws you off in 2020, don't bother, this is a scam.
1 : went to options, full screen, got stuck, ui is even worse then I remember, not even error messages if you do something wrong, no messages as to basic navigation even.
2 : somehow world generation is worse then I remember
3 : in all these years, still didn't find the time to improve character movement, I completed Unity tutorials that achieve better feel then this garbage
4 ; still the same 3 classes as 5 year ago, still the same very limited craft list from 5 years ago
5 : all I noticed that got added is a bunch off mobs that look like a stoned guys bad fantasy and just mindlessly roam and attack, spawn all around you
this is a scam, and a very bad one, I can't believe this game gets to live and that the dev can keep selling this. All I believe is that the dev is in the cannabis business, and that you have to be stoned to actually think this is a playable game or that it has seen ANY progress in these 5 years. I came back to inform you the game managed to crash while I alt-tabbed to write this...
edit 3 march 2017 :
Read the patch notes and thought hmmm maybe I should give it another try.
Then I read the latest reviews and immediatly thought : maybe not...
edit2 may 6 2016:
couldn't be bothered to test further then couple mins after the big update...
edit:
I refrained from personal opinions like "cash grab" of a dying visually impressive voxel engine with twitchy controls and no gameplay, but after reinstalling the game one month later, nothing changed, 1 year from release according to their own disclaimer, the devs went on vacation because well we don't shoot software like we shoot horses, we milk it till the cow is empty. This edit is just a personal opinion, but if you are wondering if this project is worth some of your money... I'm sure it isn't by now.
/end edit and rant
Only buy if you really want to support the devs,
to me the game is not playable, controls are very unintuitive at the moment
(mostly the terraforming).
Equipping a shovel you can only dig down, so making a cave requires terraforming.
Sometimes I can't place a farm, not sure what the conditions are.
Sometimes my char gets stuck in chopping corn animation, requiring quitting the game.
The physics are very unrealistic. Trees fall down when you harvest them a couple times,
would prefer a savage lands approach where you chop them, they fall,
and then you chop them up. Same for animals, they die, corpse dissolves into resources.
Would be nice if the corpse would remain a bit, and you could choose to skin / gut it.
In my opinion, I don't know how big their team is,
but I fear 1 year from now this game will only be early access,
not a finished product, but (hopefully) I might be wrong.
Still I don't recommend it at this stage,
I'd wait at least for a full procedural world generation.
My bad, after restarting my map terrain generation seems to have picked up a bit,
it's still unresponsive at times though, letting you reach the end of the world.
So I'll change my comment to : wait for better optimization,
or a faster pc 2-3 years from now.
Ther game is fun. The building system is different and interesting. I have a good gaming system, but the framerate will never go higher than 8-10 pfs. this makes the gameplay choppy and irritating, even with the settings at the lowest they can be. with 3.1 ghz quad core processor, 12 gigs of ram, and a new nvidia, i should not have a problem on the lowest setting. Some work on the speed and this will be a really fun game. :-)
