Slow souls is a great starting point for the souls genre. Hide behind a shield and play the better remake. Patience goes brrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr!
6/10
its really not that bad. id recommend it. is it great? no. but ive played much worse for more and this was less than 2 dollars. worth it imo.
Considering what I paid for this game: Yes, I recommend. I had fun.
I got frustrated due to some bugs at times, like the final boss freezing when I killed it instead actually dying, which made me have to load the game and fight it again.
it's not even worth the 1,49€ it's on sale for atm. slower than my restarted cousin. do not think that maybe you'll like it, maybe everyone is just wrong about it. no. it's insulting that this piece of shit hasn't been removed from steam.
Initially I had 2 game crashes, one at 40 mins and another at 80 mins. At that time I had a dilemma as to whether refund this or to keep playing, hoping that the crashes will resolved itself(it didn't of course) as it is closer to the 2 hour playtime refund period. I tried searching for help and found one that might solve the crash issue. And oh my, that was a good decision I had made given the tight timing. I disabled NVIDIA Turbulence in the options and continue playing the game, hoping that the next crash doesn't occur at the 2hr mark. It didn't crash for the next 4 hours during my play session and I was happy with it. The next crash occurs around 12 hours+ total play time. So it is a good 10 hours+ of smooth gameplay with no crashes. I had a total of about 10 crashes for the 120 hours of playtime. That's on average about 12 hours per crash which is about enough time to beat the game. So do take note if you plan on buying this game.
[If disabling NVIDIA Turbulence didn't work you, try disabling "Volumetric Lighting" and "Postprocessing" in options.]
I played this game and completed 3 times, with each class from scratch. The main distinction among the 3 classes is just the different starting magic, equipment and stats. All of these can be carried forward to NG+ and NG++ is the final playthrough. The fighting style will depend on the weapon equipped. It also plays similar to Dark Souls 1 with some minor differences. Compared to Dark Souls 1, this game is so much easier. You can literally beat the game without increasing your VIT(or Max HP) and using attribute & magic shards, that is how easy it is.
Unlike Dark Souls 1, this game has a EXP multiplier that increases as you defeat enemies up to a cap of 2.0. The multiplier can be saved and not reset at savepoints if you choose not to refill your health or potions. So if you play very well, you can racked up hundreds of thousands of exp and finally spend them all after some time. The other interesting thing is that bosses dropped 2 different variant of an equipment. The orange variant one will only dropped if you meet some challenge requirements, which is not stated in game but can be found online. Any equipment you have found cannot be discarded and will have no duplicates, but you can keep both variant of the boss equipment if you play NG+. The exp gained can be banked into either attributes or magic.
Overall the game is rather short at around 10+hrs and I had much fun playing it. You can try this game out if you don't mind the occasional crashes and the rather slow pace of Dark Souls 1 combat. There is currently a 95% off steep discount which is good value as it includes all DLC.

One of the worst games ever realized.
One of the if not the worst game I have ever played. Gun to my head, couldn't think of something I played I have enjoyed playing less. Mass Effect Andromeda is even better than this.
I decided this game was irredeemable trash the moment I entered a bossfight where:
The boss has a massive amount of hp. Doesn't stagger.
Has giant, sweeping attacks that hit behind him.
Has an AOE ground-slam that stuns you through a greatshield, long enough that he gets two full swipes at you doing half of my character's HP through medium armor.
Has a tracking ground-thrust that does a ton of damage, three in a row, you have to be running to avoid them.
After losing a quarter of its health has a move it can use within a minute each time, possibly faster, in which it spawns two 'eggs' at opposite ends of the arena that you cannot possibly destroy in time so at least one tiny dude pops out.
Said tiny dudes, for which there is zero sanity checking on how many can be spawned in (meaning the boss doesn't have a 'limit' that keeps it from spawning in more) can hit a greatshield with their knuckle weapons and not bounce. They're also quite tanky, and have infinite poise during their blenderific flurry of attacks, assuming they're not using their leaping attack which stuns for a full two seconds, and can mid-flight reorient to catch you sprinting - not running, *sprinting* past - them in a 180 degree arc.
And that's not mentioning that there's mutliple tiny 'shrines' that are meant to protect you from a one-hit-kill attack... but even though in the lore snippet prior to the boss fight it gives you a 'hint' as to how to survive this attack, it also is completely f---ing incorrect about the gremlins being unable to hurt you while you're in the shrine, meaning they can just push you out of the shrine so you get killed by the blast anyway.
This game is such a fantastic example of garbage game design, and that boss fight in particular, that it's simply astounding. I was willing to forgive some of the minor jank prior to this boss but it's so f---ing bad I have just decided to scrap trying to finish this hot steaming pile of a failure of game design. What an unbelievable act of oversight to make a boss that bad.
Good game.
Sadly, I can't access the DLC because the blacksmith won't give me the option, even though the DLC is installed :-/ Still had a lot of fun, though
If you manage to pick this game up cheaply during a Steam sale, it's a nice enough diversion to play through.
Although dated, the graphics are still okay, although there are a few glitches here and there, as objects going through one and other instead of colliding.
The first downside of the game is the fact there is no map system, which can make exploration rather frustrating, as they expect you to focus on land marks. Often I found myself confused when I was in areas that looked very much alike.
The other thing that a lot of games have is a save system based on certain in-game points and the fact you are bound to one save slot during your playthrough.
This makes replayability or exploring the outcome of difference choices you can make impossible.
For me personally, it is not the sort of game I would want to replay in its whole, just to see a different outcome, this is not just because the gameplay isn't as much fun as I hoped, but also because it can get quite repetitive, and the story isn't as fleshed out and lore-rich as it is in the The Witcher series.
Respawned monsters in areas you have already cleared is quite frustrating and results in unrewarding hack-and-slash.
For an older game the graphics and game play were great and I had 0 bugs. I also enjoyed the story and the combat
This game made me so angry my tits caught on fire.
Its an amazing hard and a hard one as well. It is definitely for those who is looking for a challenge. I also really loved all those cool armors and weapons you have after looting and killing bosses. It is not perfect it has some issues such as in late game i am having crashes often, boss fights get really stressful if don't have good equipment but i will say it again this game showed me some of the best armor sets i have ever seen. Enjoyed the game a lot. Definitely recommended for all who loves soul like challenging games.
Estética maneira, gráfico bom, mas gameplay muito travada.
I was enjoying for a moment then I thought ..nope.. Go f-u-c-k yourself with all those bugs mfs
Not for me. It's dark, depressing, and unintuitive. Bacically a large helping of despair. If that floats your boat go for it.
Trash game
Boy, I just really dislike a lot of things about this game. I played it on release during a huge Dark Souls high and I think I sort of fooled myself into being happy that there was a similar game that had just come out.
There are so many annoying and un-fun aspects here, it's especially noticeable in light of the newer game being so much better. I can't imagine ever playing this again. I just can't recommend this to anyone, not even fellow Souls freaks like myself.
Feels like fisher price dark souls
Most weapons are very slow.
It pains me to say that its almost good, lots of equipment to try
but its got the same problem as its sequel:
Where TF do i go
Half way through the game the quest man said yo go find a door i dont know where it is, good luck and go find it bish
then you gotta backtrack through all the maps you've already completed.
Before that moment it was 50pain/50fun
After that moment the game is 70%pain/30%fun
ive beaten every fromsoft souls, this game just doesnt reach the "worth playing" bar
I honestly cant believe i beat it
It is slow, janky, not-just-a-little rough around the edges and definitely very infuriating at times, but still holds a special kind of charm. Decided to go for all achievements and it took me just under 50 hours and 4 playthroughs (3 is enough but I got scammed out of an ending due to a bug) and it was quite an adventure. Game length is perfectly fine and all the areas are more or less alright, if a little maze-like sometimes. Enemies and bosses are nothing to write home about, however late game archers and rogues can go get banished to the Rhogar realm.
Great potential, squandered by being unpolished and lack of game testing.
I bought this forever ago. I wasn't super into it before. However, the polls on gamer preference have inspired me to try again. I recommend because devs seem to genuinely care what gamers think, and it's a good playable game.
If you like dying a lot in games, this is the game for you.
cool game
Great game. Based devs.
Good game
My friend who I play CS 2 with said if I post a review on this game and it gets 202 likes and 69 Awards that he will buy me a RTX 3060 and 2 Kilos of canned ham. So I'm just gonna leave this here. Help a brotha!
Weirdly enough... I prefer this one over the new one.
very good, basic..easy to learn game
Terrible game, buggy and unimaginative. Further, their political takes are awful and should be kept to themselves. Never buy anything from CI Games.
I love this game
Boy, does this game have issues, but it's hard for me to see those issues when kicking open a chest with a satisfying chunk, whacking a bad guy and having if eel like I really hit him and knocked him flat. The general aesthetic of the game feels a lot weightier than other souls-like games. Blows really feel like they hit. Things feel heavy.
At full price, of course I wouldn't recommend this for reasons other comments should make abundantly clear. But this regularly goes for like 5USD or less I think, and picking it up at that level to try out a souls-like with fun aesthetics seems like a good call to me.
If you like inputs being half a second off, when boss move sets rely on split second reactions, this is your game.
If you like playing a game where you take damage, while not actually getting hit, or while within a supposed I-frame, then this is your game.
If you like playing a game where the protagonist attack range is shorter than his weapon, making you miss everything, then this is your game.
Don't waste your money, unless you like wasting money.
Buggy unimaginative clone
I honestly can't see why people like this game...
It's a pale imitation of Dark Souls. It adds nothing new and takes so many steps back that it can be considered a downgrade in countless ways.
Combat is boring, enemies do next to no damage and the weapons you can use aren't good.
It's either subpar damage but painfully slow, or slightly quicker with awful damage.
I was that bored that I was just spinning the camera around in circles during battles.
If it's cheap, I guess get it, but even then, just get pretty much anything else...
One of the first attempts to copy darksouls formula, but a shockingly inept one. It may just cost half to a third of fromsofts games but it isn't worth a tenth of that.
good -_-
Wow. What a game. This gives an awesome fantasy RPG experience. The Story is a fine and the gameplay is ok. An enjoyable title.
I played it after the sequel. Love the aesthetic. Enjoyed it.
I wish I never got this game tbh.
Okay There are issues within this game but its not half bad you have to try it if you like this soul type game well not entirely but it is I would say its good if not the best
I played this game for a while, and i wasn't disappointed. If anything this game has exceeded my expectations in every sense of the word. If you ever decide to buy this game do it now, as the game isn't on sale and the developers deserve all of your money, from buying this game at full price.
I'm enjoying my time with it, it's like a casual dark souls. combat isn't as good as DS though.
not my type
Great. Hard.
Despite every review I looked at telling me to not play this one, I decided to buy into the $1.50 sale and try this game out. I really wish I hadn't. I honestly didn't believe people when they said that this game was slow and clunky, but no, this is bad. Combat is unintuitive and sloppy, with very little reason to ever use the roll button. Weapons apart from the staff are slow and don't seem to do any real damage. The first boss is really good at tracking you and turtling during possible windows to attack. The second boss took forever to kill because he also turtled up and called in his buddies. The characters in the game are either boring or jerks, and I lost all patience for this game when they decided to put two different shield guys right next to each other, in a small corridor. If you're gonna be like that, no thanks. Would not recommend.
I've seen alot of people saying it's bad and all that , but honestly it's even better than i thought for the price of $1.49 well it's 100% worth it
this game is broken should be delete from steam no one will buy game play are so bad
worse than dark souls 2
If you're looking for Lords of the Fallen, might I recommend the 2023 entry instead?
This one... welp, it was one of the first non-FromSoft Souls-likes I remember, and it deserves to be celebrated on that front, especially since its developers learned and refined their formula. As a game, though, Lords of the Fallen 2014 is clunky and forgettable. I made it a few bosses in, set the game down, and the next time I really thought about it was when I clicked on it by mistake while scrolling my library. While I respect its place in Souls-like history, there's little if any reason to run it at this point.
