Promising, but in the end it falls flat.
I really wanted to give this the benefit of the doubt, so honestly, let's start with the positives:
-GREAT armor designs! Your character can and will look absolutely badass, and the game isn't afraid of showering you with plenty of armor!
-Isn't afraid to bring new ideas to the table. Consumable tem that let you regain your lost exp after death is a very nice idea. So is the idea of increasing your exp gain multipllier the longer you don't heal and refill at the checkpoints. This adds a nice risk/reward system for good players to get rewarded further with more exp.
-The level design ain't half bad! Plenty of areas to explore, areas loop back to other previous areas, not nearly as linear as I initially was afraid of.
-The game encourages magic usage by making it a somewhat seperrate system from your regular level ups, making it relatively easy to get some magic abilities without having to infest a ton.
Sadly, that's about as many positive things I can say.
This game has many issues:
-BAD optimization. Just really getting terrible framerate, even when lowering the settings. Now this was while streaming, but I also streamed games like Dark Souls 2 that came around the same time, and that game ran absolutely fine, while looking much better than this game at it's lowest settings.
-Your character's attacks feel SOOO SLOW. I know it's a Soulslike. I played Dark Souls 1 and 2. But there's something just sooo darn slow and clunky feeling about this game. And enemies are not slow enough to be able to get behind them and attack them after rolling, at least with heavier weapons.
You roll away when the enemy attacks, try to get an opening to attack back, aaand NOPE, they INSTANTLY turn around and block you. This is especially annoying with most of the shield enemies, which I'll get to later.
But honestly, I spent the first 2 hours with a Strength character using heavy axes, then going to lighter axes that were fasterr, but I just could not hit a lot of the enemies in time. It was TOO DARN SLOW.
So I ended up restarting the game and going with the Rogue and an agility build instead, using daggers. This made a world of difference in how the game felt. And honestly, IF you decide to play this, please do yourself a favor and pick the ROGUE and use DAGGERS.
-So many darn shield enemies. They don't even need to hold up their shield, they just block and attack from the front and side. Some even barely do damage on the rear unless you are behind them dead center. But getting behind them is almost impossible, because as I mentioned, they turn around super fast, even after attacking. Staggerring them with a kick or shield bash doesn't open them up long enough for an attack, so it's useless. I could mostly only cheese them by using magic and waiting SLOOOOOWLY for my mana to recharge...
-The magic abilities seem to be a bit unbalanced. I socketed a rune into my "Gauntlet", which is a magic projectile launcher you get, and it made it so powerful, that it made some of my other damage dealing magic abilities useless, because they did less damage and were more risky to pull off because you need to be at closer range for those to hit.
-The bosses, although some have very neat ideas, are suffering from the same issue of not really having any openings most of the time. Some have a few, but they're usually very short, and make it hard to do decent damage against them. One boss in particular that made me rage quit was SO BAD, that you had to destroy the boss' shield first, where it starts healing their shield when it's almost down, and after you get the shield down, it charges fast instakill attack that covers the ENTIRE arena, except for behind a small wall that seems to appear randomly in the arena, which you can never predict where it will be, leaving you no time to consistently get behind it for cover. It was a cool idea, but executed terrible, and I had no more patience continuing after spend over an hour slowly cheesing tanky shield enemies and ghosts that only took damage from magic.
-The camera lock is so darn annoying. It constantly randomly unlocks from enemies. During boss fights it happens when dodging attacks or when trying to make distance from the bosses. And also with regular enemies during close combat rolling and attacks from either you and the enemy. It is beyond tedious and causes a lot of combat to become super annoying and unenjoyable.
Nitpicks:
-The game can't be bothered to even tell you what effects most rings and other trinkets have. I know Dark Souls games also have some lack of info with plenty of things, which I not always like, but holy crap, just tell me what the ring does without me having to look it up on the wiki whenever I find a new one...
-UI is at times a bit bad. "equipping" consumables are called "add as favorite" in the menu text. Which makes no sense at all.
All in all, I just cannot recommend this game to anyone who is looking for an enjoyable experience. It was good effort to make one of the first Soulslikes that were not made by Fromsoft. They tried some cool things, and I commend and respect the devs for trying, I reallly do. But it really is too rough. It's probably only worth playing if you're one of the most diehard Soulslike fans and absolutely MUST play every one of them.
But generally speaking, I'd say stay away. Not even on sale.
A clunky generic mess that was rebooted in the same exact state. Do not give these scam artists money.
I got it for 1,49€ on sale and its fine for the price
But the game in general really isnt great.. this game feels generic, uninspired and most of all.. slooow
So yeah, I guess you could give it a shot for 1,50 on sale if youre a fan of souls likes but dont expect much, it seems to be a very forgettable game
It's unrefined. Souls-like games are difficult by nature. They require a certain play style and have intended limitations on movement and actions. With a slow clunky character that takes massive damage regardless of armor-why-just why would you have ranged enemies have heat seeking arrows? The games dodge mechanic does not animation cancel like in other souls like games meaning you're locked into an attack. If you time your attacks or dodges wrong then you can get double or triple teamed by enemies.
Regardless of technical issues. I did not enjoy this game enough to make it worth my time. The story isn't captivating. The art style is the only cool thing left about it.
it good
10/10; midevil; peak
Decent challange. Solid gameplay. Dodge can be clunky from time to time but in general its ok.
Last two bosses are poorly scripted or bugged. Second to last completly bugged out and stood in place frozen and last one would freeze during combat few times but it is not game breaking..Generaly positive experience from souls enjoyer perspective.
There are some fun aspects to it, especially in the early game exploration, but as the game progresses, it is nothing but boring. The boss fights are boring, and the story is thrown to the side even though it has interesting ideas in some specific moments. The joyful exploration turns into backtracking.
A shame.
I think I had this game on my wishlist for years (it could have been since the announcement). I liked the trailer and the medieval fantasy world. Over the years, the game was on sale many times, and every time I looked at the reviews, I decided to skip it. The last sale offered the game for only $3 and I finally pulled the trigger and decided to check if it's really that bad as people write about it.
And oh boy, they were right! The graphic is still pretty great for a 10-year-old game, but the gameplay... The fights are terrible, especially with the strong enemies. The movements are so slow, that by the time you want to raise the shield to block the attack, you have already got hit and took some damage. Same when you try to roll to avoid the hit, even if you are rolling you are still struck by the enemy...
I tried to give this game multiple chances, but I gave up. Could be a great game, but unfortunately, it is not.
Played 30 mins and I'll be honest, it was really bad.
Attacks are slow, dodging is slow, everything is slow. You get damage even if you dodge.
And you get to spend so much time dying in the beginning of the game just by trying to kill the boss like enemy... is not what I expected.
If you like responsive game mechanics then this is not for you.
Well after completing the game I can safely say that It was one of the best story driven games i have played, the lore was fantastic and the characters were made with dedication and depth.
The only thing i had a problem with it was the dodging mechanic, if you weren't spot on with it you will easily get punished for it, and that somehow made the game even more fun, for people who like a challenge i definitely recommend this game.
Cant wait to 100% it and get all of the achievements, a huge recommend from me!
Reviews were mixed but I happened to enjoyed this. Its was a medium-short game, not too hard (I played on easy of course :D) It is no Dark Souls, but it was fun for the most part. Combat was a bit slow but I am not a hardcore player so it was fine with me. Lots of secrets rooms and different gear, not bad at all.
slow movement slow attack slow response slow everything.... not good
😿
Soulsclones simply do NOT get what makes Dark Souls good. Level design would be a good start, though...
Not good, sorry
Avoid this one and the new iteration both are bad
Dark Souls from Temu
As a souls-like game and precursor to the newer Lords of The Fallen. This game has peaked my interest and was well worth it.
the graphics and game play were very well received for the year of release. I would highly recommend the full playthrough in order to experience this game in full glory.
unplayable keeps crashes
In general, the game is good enough. At the start, it feels a bit too slow and clumsy, but once you level up and get better gear, it improves. Character development is quite limited, and controls are confusing. For example, it was a lot of effort to understand how the gauntlet works or how to unlock paths locked by spells.
However, once you level up a bit and get gear suited to you games become quite enjoyable, it had a couple of challenging moments (soft lock on two brothers' boss was a bit meh).
Story-wise, it has it... minimal one but I did like it.
Despite everyone always dogging on this game, it's still better than the 2023 version. This is a super slow-paced game. I liked it enough to beat it at least once. More than I can say for the next installment. Don't buy this unless it's $5, though -- game ain't that good.
Harkyn origins ♥
Lord of the Fallen (2014) offers impressive graphics that create an immersive visual experience. However, the game's controls and combat mechanics are notably cumbersome and painfully slow.
Additionally, the frequent camera and screen shake during combat sequences can induce dizziness, detracting significantly from the overall experience. Unlike other Souls-like games that I usually compel myself to complete, this title did not provide a satisfactory experience, leading me to discontinue playing.
Given these issues, I would rate this game a 3/10.
this game is aggressively bad. i played it all the way through because there were no soulslikes in 2016 but dear god man do not play this
YUP
Clunky and bad.
Overall I really enjoyed Lords of the Fallen. This was my first souls-like, so I can't really compare it to others, but judged on its own merits I think this game is quite good and very underrated.
The combat is just FUN. Weapons have a great sense of heft and weight, especially hammers and axes. Enemy health is reasonable, and combat rewards good timing without being overly frustrating. Every enemy has at least one tactic that it's weak against (even the tower shield guys). The boss fights are fun and not overly frustrating IF you use your head and observe their patterns instead of going all Leroy Jenkins on them.
Once you have it all figured out, running around killing stuff becomes highly enjoyable.
My main criticism is that enemies respawn whenever you reload a save or re-enter an area. I understand that it's a normal feature of souls-like games, but in general I HATE infinite respawns in modern games -- I prefer games to be more persistent. But I had fun despite that. Also, the camera can get a little wonky in *very* tight spaces, but I've played a lot of games over the decades that have wonky cameras, so I guess I've built up a tolerance to that. The only crash I encountered was when fighting the Beast boss (a common issue, apparently) but my 2nd attempt was successful.
Anyway, I'm not sure why so many people hate this game. The combat mechanics are fun, the graphics STILL look good even after 10 years, and the art design is simply fantastic.
Trash Game, I avoid the attack but its hits me. Do not play
very good tbh so far
It can be said to be good overall, only the lack of a map makes players feel depressed
This game is unplayable unfortunately game crash all the time and you loose process start all over again.
The camera shakes/wobbles for just about every action you perform, and there is no option to turn it off.
Combat/movement is painfully sluggish, and combined with the constant camera sway it feels like I'm on a rickety boat whilst drunk.
In other words, this game makes me want to puke
good game
Just play a fromsoft game instead
This didn't even try to cover its Dark Souls inspirations. It took (or at least it tried to take) from it its difficulty, its environment, a part of its atmosphere and its mechanics.
The moveset is very weak, with a slowness rarely seen in the genre, and despite the fact of doing anything you can to reduce your weight. Your character really is slow and even sprinting won't get you out of trouble (in addition to reduce your stamina to 0).
The game remains beautiful, dark of course (a bit too dark even when brightness is set on highest), but also showing a palette of varied colours as some great viewpoints here and there. The cutscenes and cinematics are gorgeous. The bestiary is okay, opponents becoming quite redundant as you have to cross some zones multiple times. Bosses and their outfits are particularly vibrant. It goes the same for the music, it is okay. You can easily customize your character, equipping a lot of different cool weapons, shields, armor sets, etc. Those are superbly all detailed. Characters that you encouter are interesting, bring a bit of depth to the universe you are evolving in (special mention to Yetka). There are some cool sidequests to achieve if you know who to talk to or search.
Even if it has a (disappointing) DLC about a labyrinth, the game itself is one, with a lot of closed doors opening later in the adventure, than closing again, of automatic passages triggered by random mechanisms, of weird shortcuts. And the fact that you don't have a map at all, not even a way to teleport makes it even more trash. Speaking of the 'bonfires', the way they work definitely is rotten and there are ridiculously few of them. Add this to the fact that knowing where to go and what to do is often unclear, and you got your disaster.
I had many hitboxes issues with the monsters: times I parried but got hurt, times I clearly touched them but they had no damage, and I also had collision bugs, especially for the few jumps you have to do during the playthrough. Believe me, you don't want your character to jump. The fights with enemies, even the simplest ones, become way too long as you gain exp, because their level is adjusted to yours.
The ending (no spoil) is original and allow you to play it any way you want. It is a demanding game, but one which itself sometimes fails to execute even the simplest mechanics. Worth a look but don't stay too close.
Clunky and the screen shaking was silly hurting my enjoyment of the game.
Small and easy game (not a souls like!) but worth a try if you buy at sale. You may try your own challenging gameplay limiting levelling or something else? Boss fights are a joke...
I can see why the game was considered good back when it came out but 20 years later it's worth a dollar if you can reach the Annihilator battle in an hour so you can listen to the ending story. Or you can search YouTube for that battle and watch about an hour of gameplay. Either way, its not worth much these days.
I loved the dark, heavy, medieval feel of it.
Its some way intended to be clunky and slow, if is it a problem for you, don't buy it.
Yet is a hard game, I love those.
Not a perfect game or as good as DS1&3 but way better than the remake. Playing this game makes much more fun than the Hexworks garbage in my opinion
This was mine first Souls like game. The best part of this game was the armor design for my charachter. I was looking like some cool beffy paladin-cleric guy with a nice shield and sword. A badass armor for a shield sword wielding charachter. Elden Ring ofc is a way better game and gameplay, but u can find loads of silly looking armor in that game..meh. Didnt finish this game, kinda got repetative and i lost the will :/. There is a remake? of sort of this game called the same...will try that at one point, you should to.
It's Dark Souls but with obesity. The gameplay loop and aesthetic/mood is really well done, but story was mid tier with some elements that could've been capitalized on further, and it was pretty short. Still worth it, if you're souls-like fan!
I honestly have almost all memories of this game wiped out. But judging from the parts that I remember, this game wasn't all THAT bad, just has really strong competitors in souls genre, especially today since there was no Dark Souls 3 yet when this game came out. Worth a try if you can get it for a decent price (not 30€).
unplayable, go somwhere else souls fans
One of the earliest contenders to FromSoftware's masochism simulators, Lords of the Fallen manages to stand proudly apart from the others with its beautiful visuals and intriguing lore. The story manages to raise curiosity to an entertaining level where you start to ponder on all the characters' backstories and the world-building itself. The gameplay is solid, not much to say about it other than it's a fun take on the Action-RPG formula sprinkled with some surprises here and there to increase the difficulty up to the stereotypical "Souls-like" experience. I highly recommend this hidden gem to fans of role-playing games.

I like the old version. I purchased it back in 2015 but I never played it.
Great game and it is different enough from Dark Souls to be enjoyable.
