NIGHTMARE GAME
The difficulty level is high, but yo can take help of cheats.
This game is kind of depressing. You can tell that the dev team had a few passionate people who just didn't have the talent or the manpower to make a competent game. For every cool idea, like a literally on-rails shooting gallery in a Half-Life monorail, you have a wave-based NPC defense mission. Things like enemy or tileset variety are virtually non-existent. The story is trying so desperately to be Dune but with Geralt of Rivia as the protagonist. In reality the guy is so unlikeable, the dialogue so tedious, and the plot beats so obvious that there is practically no enjoyment to be had outside of the word "Hubbardium". The game isn't 'so bad it's good', like I was hoping -- It's just bad.
Alpha Prime is an old-school FPS that will appeal to fans of Doom 3 and the wonderful world of "eurojank". It's rough around the edges in many ways, with some comically bad dialogue, but this actually adds to its charm for me. I get fatigued by the polish and complexity of modern games, so returning to simpler experiences from time to time is really refreshing.
Gameplay - most similar to Doom 3 and quake 4 with additional influence from Half Life (the wall-mounted health dispensers are almost identical). Another game this reminds me of a lot in visual style is the even more retro title Chaser - the washed out, orange tinted landscapes on a Mars-like planet gave me particular Chaser nostalgia - in a good way! Both these games are really atmospheric and make you feel like you're stranded on the far edges of the universe.
Alpha Prime's combat is straightforward but deceptively tough at times. Enemies are accurate even at distance and deal hefty damage, so after a few levels I found myself really needing to make use of cover and the lean mechanic to peek out and take pot shots. There's also a fun hacking tool that enables you to scope out rooms through the security cameras and occasionally do sabotage such taking control of sentry turrets or robotic landmines you can drive into enemies. The combat difficulty spikes now and again in unpredictable ways, which I found compelling because it means you have to be prepared for anything - also, the "smooth" and rigorously crafted game experience of big titles these days feels way less immersive to me due to the predictability. Despite this being an obviously unrealistic scifi game, I still enjoy action that feels more believable - ebbing and flowing chaotically without the guiding hand of "user experience" design making sure everything progresses at the same pace.
Visuals - I think this game has aged very nicely. It runs smoothly at max settings on a mid-range modern PC and has a lot of highly detailed environments. The enemy variety is a little plain, but the atmosphere of the environments makes up for it. The lighting looks great too - I love the heavy use of bloom, smoke and tints that was popular in 00s games.
Writing - despite the bad dialogue I mentioned earlier, the overall story is actually interesting, with elements of mystery and intrigue about various characters' true motives. It's not as dumb as the plots of many fps games, but nothing incredible either. The ending hints at a sequel, which sadly never got made.
Length - I finished this in just under 5 hours, and it doesn't have anything else to do beside the campaign. It's a short but sweet experience and still good value considering the low price.
Conclusion - this is the type of game I have the biggest soft spot for. I love finding underrated indie games, particularly in the scifi and fps genres. There's a charm these games have that is missing from many bigger titles; perhaps it's due to more creative freedom, less "design by committee" - games like this are full of surprises and unusual structuring that doesn't conform to the norms of "good" design; so the experience of playing them feels more fun and adventurous, even when there are obvious flaws included.
Alpha Prime is a hidden gem and highly recommended for anyone who loves retro fps and scifi gaming.
HUBBARDIUM
This is pretty much peak gaming, if you love jank.
It's a difficult shooter, tried it on hard for the first time, and it is frustrating, since you need to land head shots or you ran out of ammo. Because of this being eurojank, the enemies move erratically, and the one of the weapons, the flamethrower is unreliable, I don't think i killed even one enemy with it in the entire game.
You have some kind of slo-mo, which makes the enemies also less aggressive, I think the intended purpose for it was to use it when you wanna charge a group of enemies in close range, because it serves no purpose to use it when you lean out of cover.
HUBBARDIUM
The dialogue is also peak, if you love b-movies, you will chuckle at this. And the story is written as a novel, you can kinda tell it was written by a professional author. It's good sci-fi tbh.

I recommend you buy it if you like jank, and play it in 3-4(its abt 7 hrs long) sessions on medium, and then on hard if you wanna challenge yourself.
The story of Alpha Prime centers on a security officer, Caden, who is sent to investigate a distress signal from a remote space station. As the plot unfolds, players uncover a conspiracy involving rogue corporations and alien forces. You've guessed it! It's somewhat generic, but thankfully it still has enough intrigue to keep you reasonably engaged. It's an adequate backdrop to the action but ultimately it doesn't elevate the gameplay experience.
In terms of visuals, Alpha Prime is a product of its time. The environments are well-detailed for a 2007 release, with decent textures and atmospheric lighting, particularly within the space station's interiors. However, compared to contemporary shooters, the graphics can feel dated. Don't let that put you off though. It will run on almost anything and I'm running it on an ancient laptop with an AMD FX9830p and RX550 and performace is great.
The soundtrack is serviceable, with atmospheric music and sound effects that help set the mood but don't stand out as particularly memorable. The voice acting is somewhat hit-or-miss, with some performances feeling stiff and uninspired. However, it doesn’t detract significantly from the overall experience.
At its core, Alpha Prime offers traditional FPS mechanics. No controller support but KB&M is intuitive and easy to use. Gameplay involves combat with a variety of weapons, navigating through different environments, and completing objectives. The shooting mechanics are functional, with solid control and aiming, though not as refined as some more modern FPS games.
Alpha Prime is a competent, if unremarkable, first-person shooter from the mid-2000s. It offers a solid sci-fi experience and it's super cheap.
Alpha Prime is a genuinely terrible game. Possibly one of the worst FPS games I've played, and I've played many.
First, let's cover the positives! There are none. With that out of the way, let's delve into what is so terrible about it.
For starters, the combat is an exercise in tedium and frustration. There's a total of 3-4 enemy types in the game, and they all have hitscan weapons capable of depleting your health bar in 2 seconds flat. There's no way to negate this. You can try using cover, you'll still get hit. You can lean, you'll still get hit. You can use slow-mo powers, you'll still take damage at the same rate as in realtime. You can't stagger enemies, they'll keep shooting even when taking a face full of buckshot. There is no indicator of where damage is coming from. The AI is nonexistant. You'll be getting real cozy with the F5 key while slogging through this festering dreg of a game.
Every weapon in your arsenal is a peashooter with a generic sci-fi design. These are some of the weakest and least satisfying weapons I've seen in the genre. Nothing besides the rocket launcher does any real damage, it's got one of the worst sniper rifles of all time, and grenades are so harmless it left me wondering if they were bugged.
The game desperately tries to mimic Doom 3 without understanding what makes it good. It copies the surface walking sections with oxygen meters, trams, crate puzzles and vehicle sections, and does so extremely poorly. The story is complete nonsense. The dialogue feels like it was written by an AI, a lobotomy victim, someone with zero grasp of the English language, or perhaps a combination of the three. Every 5 minutes you'll get interrupted by mind-numbingly dull cutscenes that feel like they go on forever.
Do you remember those crappy Sy-Fy Channel shows from the early 2000's with a 3/10 rating on IMDB? That'll give you an idea of the quality of writing we're dealing with here.
Overall, a unengaging, tedious, frustrating and woefully poor attempt at a shooter. Janky as hell, but unfortunately not the funny or charming kind of jank. Not worth your time even at 90% off.
Alpha Prime is an obscure first person shooter. It borrows ideas from classic games like Doom and F.E.A.R. For example, there is hacking, vehicles and bullet time. Although those ideas are not always well executed, the game is not so bad. With lots of quick saves and quick loads, maybe you can have some fun with it.
A relatively short but entertaining late-2000s low-budget FPS.
Overall, the game is very unremarkable. Alpha Prime does absolutely nothing unique or interesting to set it apart from other FPS games that came before it. In fact, the game almost feels like a low-budget amalgamation of many ideas from the few years before it released. Nothing bad, just very vanilla. The only real issue I have with the game is the high accuracy from the hit-scan enemies.
However, the game does scratch a strange itch I didn't know I had. I don't know how to explain it, but the game invoked feelings of nostalgia despite the fact I had never played it until 2024. It could be because I grew up playing games from around the same time period as the game's original release.
Regardless, the game is only a few dollars, goes on sale often, and doesn't really do anything wrong to dissuade players from devoting a few hours to beat the campaign. I'd say give it a try if you are interested in mid- to late-2000s FPS or just want a quick throwback FPS.
