This game feels like a jump back to the original Gauntlet games before the N64 version. The wizard class feels amazing, every magic book feels dramatically different. The archer feels nimble and good to play, the warrior has decent strength to makeup for the lack of ranged ability. The levels are well made and the fps stays stable. I played this game 4 player with my family on the big screen and it was good memories the whole time. I would recommend this game.
great game
"Connection time out"
still not working in 2025
Awesome splitscreen game
A great callback to the OG Gauntlet while keeping things new and creative. I wish there more were more characters and DLC to keep the game alive, but for the price, it's been a fantastic co-op game to just hop in for a bit when you feel like some classic arcade fun.
It was really fun for a few hours. Each character has a different play style and can complement each other’s weaknesses, but the campaign is rather short and the fighting dynamics get repetitive after a while.
And it was a real bummer to save up 100k G for several floors to finally unlock a new potion only to find out that it couldn’t be used in the last boss.
Freaking great to play with friends/ family
.
Loved this game and this remaster is real good.
Not the best in the series, but worth it if it's on sale. It's very basic even for gauntlet standards.
There are a few differences compared to the older games such as gauntlet legends. Firstly there isn't any level up system, you simply earn gold to unlock skills which makes the game feel more arcade like as opposed to a typical RPG. Secondly there aren't any secret characters just the base four. And the biggest negative I would say is the levels, they are much smaller, there aren't as many and they lack much diversity. The main redeeming thing about this game is how each character plays very differently.
The big take away is that its a small package gauntlet with little replayability.
Back in the day Gauntlet was my jam. We had an Apple Mac in the household and it had very few games but i remember Gauntlet so vividly.
I would say this game is a really faithful modernisation of the classic.
Also this is from the people that brought you helldivers and the DNA really shows here.
Even though this game is fairly dated it still very much holds up today and it plays incredibly well on the steam deck as well.
Not even 3 levels in and the game already introduces an enemy you CANNOT fight and must run from. Incredibly un-fun and just makes the game annoying for no good reason.
Couple this with rooms full of mobs that can body block you, you wind up dying to death's shadow that just...appears randomly and follows you around for about 20 seconds at a time, every 10-15 seconds.
Solid top down twin stick brawler with great coop options!
Hardly feels like a Gauntlet game.
I won't be making the classic Gauntlet vs. this one comparison. Game is so boring and soulless that I would rather have Get Medieval, that game had more soul than this one.
fun w friends
A really fun, top down, and action rpg. It has some unlockables, and the couch coop really makes this game shine. This is a more casual game, which is a great trait to have when people just want to have some fun.
Old school fun with a new school twist. I am HOOKED!
This is an arpg with a capital A. It is ten years old but still has a dedicated community of players. Spme have over 12,000 hours in the game. It is difficult to unlock the 50th achievement solo, but the community is ready to assist.
100%-ing the game is very grindy unless you put 100 or so hours in the game anyway.
nice
lots of fun, esp with a group of friends!
good tribute to the classic
Played Gauntlet Legends back in the day and although this isn't a remake of the one I played I'm still in love with it!
As one who played the original Gauntlet at the arcades and bought it as soon as it was released on the first generation Nintendo console, I can confidently say this is a faithful iteration of the classic Gauntlet game. Most of the core elements that made Gauntlet special are here but presented in an updated style with better graphics and a few different mechanics thrown in the make the game feel revitalized.
In some ways, the game is possibly too similar to the original for its own good as the simplicity and repetitive nature of the gameplay will not necessarily appeal to the preferences and expectations of modern day gamers. Even for me, nostalgia could not sustain my interest in this game for more than several hours, just long enough to complete the campaign which was surprisingly short.
A few deviations from the original game that were to the detriment of this version included reducing the spawn rate and number of enemies, and making the game feel linear and less like a convoluted maze. I have no regrets spending my money and time with this version of Gauntlet, but I would recommend getting it on sale and keeping your expectations in check.
I guess if you're hungry for that 4player coop dungeon crawl, but there's better these days.
not as good as the original one but it's good
Great and true to the original gameplay design, highly recommend
Fun game and can play all 4 players locally. No split screen. My kids love playing with me.
Repeatative. There multiple no win scenarios. Annoying isometric fixed view. Levels are long and you can only save progress at the end of a level. Died several times near the end of a level. Got tired of replaying the whole level over and over just to get to the last part. Wasn't expecting much from a 1980's remake. I was still disappointed.
Reminds me of my childhood, I love it
play with your friends awesome game
Heyo friends who got the game.. I just got it so let me know when you wanna play... you Gauntlet... Legends.. ;D lmao
Great game! Lots of fun with friends! Elf will destroy all your food!
10/10 Will go hungry again!
P.S. Please add support for Geforce Now cloud gaming. You just need to click a box in Steam and they will get the ball rolling with nvidia.
Despite the flaws this game has, and the legacy it may or may not live up to depending on your history with the franchise, Gauntlet is still my favorite horde-slayer in 2025. I have nearly a thousand hours between Vermintide 2 and Darktide, and have greatly enjoyed time in Alien Swarm: Reactive Drop, Helldivers 2, GTFO, Magicka 1 & 2, and other games of their kind. I wouldn't say that Gauntlet is a better game than any of the others listed, but it is a good game, and one I personally strongly recommend. The vast majority of my time in the game was singleplayer, but any opportunity to play with friends is a welcome one.
Good old-fashioned top-down shooter with online multi-player.
Good game overall, just simple fast fun, but death really ruins the levels he is on. Basically changes from a 9/10 game to a 2/10 game instantly. It should either be removed or be optional.
Another review with a wish for a "eh" rating.
I played thousands of hours of Gauntlet: Dark Legacy for N64 back in the day, and (Sorry, devs) it just doesn't hit the same. There are other reviews for how gud the game is, but I am not that reviewer.
..It feels like the game lost something in translation. Old Gauntlet was a joy; lots of enemies, fun voice lines, balanced gameplay. This entry just seems hollow. The voices are forced, level design feels like a collection of assets rather than a world to explore, and weapons seem to have been made to please leadership on 'how much we added' rather than 'we kept a similar feeling, but upgraded', ie, a whole bunch of bad combos instead of hack n slash.
It just feels thin and hollow. I've been trying to get a copy of G:DL for years, and was so happy to find this new entry to the series, but... I just wanted Dark Legacy, not some top-down attempt at "re-imagining" what didn't need changing.
Maybe i'm the odd one out, and I really tried to like this game, but no.
Its good for mindless hack and slash for a newer set of players, but i wish Arrowhead didnt skip us older players over so harshly.
It would be better if I could play it. GeForce RTX 4080 Super. with i9 and 32GB of ram. If its choppy on this then it is the dev fault. I guess I will try this game again in a year.
Bought 4 pack unable to play with the people i gave the game to it kicks us out any time one of us joins a game
Fun couch game with friends.
Amazing game. So much fun with or without freinds. Hack n Slash is great and the replayability is so much fun
Can't go wrong for the price, especially when they give you 3 extra copies to gift your friends.
Worst game play ever.
You have to constantly move around which gets old and tiring.
Death in the catacombs comes constantly and you can barley get away if your lucky....
Gauntlet is Gauntlet.
This is alright for a gauntlet entry but its still good...
If you loved Gauntlet when you were young, don't buy this game, its not like you remember! Go buy something else, Streets of Rage, Alter Beast, Final Fight, etc.
Pick this up on sale and you can have a great 7-10 hours with friends for less than $3
Great game, lots of fun solo or co-op. Great for a quick challenge or a marathon night too. Only wish there was more!
3/5 cannot turn moving chicken into gold. Infinite money glitch hack no work :C
We need more simple full games like this. A complete masterpiece.
Oh wow, used to play the original 1985 game on my sega megadrive with my brother. We loved it so much so I just had to download this. It's just as amazing as I remember, and now it isn't 8-bit 😂.
