BREAKNECK SPEED & DEATH DEFYING STUNTS!. what more could you ask for?
TL;DR: Fun gameplay, runs well, but with limited content and lot of grind.
The core gameplay of the game is good - the water physics, the driving model of the jet skis, the various tricks you can do to earn boost, etc. Unfortunately, the game is a bit content starved especially in terms of the available tracks - the limited amount of locations is perhaps understandable, but even in the not so long career, track layouts repeat way too often. This is made even worse by the fact that the game is super grindy and to upgrade a jet ski or buy a new one, you will have to play tournaments multiple times with races on the same tracks over and over again. And you will definitely need those upgrades to progress and unlock new races as the AI gets progressively faster and faster.
I don't know about you, but I'd rather have a shorter game that I could finish within a couple hours, than playing the same 5 tracks on repeat for two hours in order to finish upgrading the first jet-ski, only to find out that buying the next one will take another hour at least playing the same tracks and tournaments again... I wouldn't mind the grind if the game had enough content to do to keep things fresh, but it just doesn't.
If you can deal with the repetitive grinding, I suppose it's a decent game to pick up even at full price - it really is fun. However, if you can't, you should skip this one.
Great jet ski game! Really good soundtracks. I really like the game's soundtracks. But the first Riptide GP was the best I played on my father's tablet when I was 9 years old :'). The good old days... It would have been nice if you could have gotten it from Steam

10hrs in i have 3 starred all events and i'm a lv23... I have 5 hydrojets, fully upgraded 4/5 of those, but only ever used 3/5 of them. i am basically done here, the only things i could do now is try to race online (not really interested in that, but might for the achievements, maybe.) or just reply the races, and earn more money to buy and upgrade the rest of the hydrojets.
Overall I thought it was really fun, not enough singleplayer content though in my opinion. Riptide Renegades was on sale for dirt cheap so i picked it up along with this one and hopefully that has enough content to satisfy me... However since i played the entirety of gp2 on the steam deck i can say the races are and were perfect duration for a work/school break. Like if i didn't play this game in my own free time at home, it would of lasted me a few weeks instead of a few days.
In conclusion... This is probably one of the best racing games you can play on the steam deck, but unless your playing it in short bursts you will run out of stuff to do fairly quick. I think it's priced fairly, and was a lot of fun for it's value.
What? A review for this game in 2024?
Yes sir! While I fastly prefer the sequel Riptide GP: Renegade because it's generally an improvement in every way there is just something about the clean stages that make you feel like you're participating in a sport and the much more upbeat music giving off these summer vibes that keep me comming back every now and then.
I tend to play the mobile version a lot more tho, which explains my low playtime.
Amazing fun.
