Beautiful adventure with gameplay that you can enjoy together with your child (or just on your own). The adventure is quite linear, which in a game like this is a plus I would say. It's like playing a storybook and the turn based battles are well balanced and you have time to explain what the different skills and attacks do rather than having to "take over" battles because it's too difficult or fast for a younger player.
Overall fun game. Good mechanics, design, story, good controls
Pros:
-Beautiful Art Style
-Touching Story
-Cool Party Members
-Innovative Fighting System
-A Lot to Explore
Cons:
-Sidequests Can Be Confusing
Conclusion:
Overall, Child of Light is a breathtakingly beautiful RPG that masterfully blends art, story, and gameplay into a heartfelt fairy tale adventure. Despite occasional confusion with sidequests, its charm and creativity make it a must-play experience.
I know I'm late reviewing this but CoL has been sitting in my library for a long time and I recently knocked it out. I'm glad I did because it is a fun game to play. Keep in mind this game is over 10 years old, so I would consider it pre-DEI. Yes the lead character is a girl and there are plenty of other female characters but it is not a woke game, and there is an actual story here that some thought was put into, and I would argue this is one of the last good efforts form UbiSoft before the gaming industry started to lose it's mind. That having been said it is just a fun game. If you like turned based RPGs and want to play an interesting take on that genre then check this one out. Time for me to dust off another old one from the library, cause the gaming industry these days needs some help.
An awesome turned-based combat game. Lovely artwork making the world lively and entertaining. I also found myself enjoying the rhyming scheme with each line.
Solid recommendation, especially on the steam deck.
Its great and addicting. Super recommend.
It's a short game. What I think is great about it is that it isn't a long a game. It isn't to open world so it is not super overwhelming. It also isn't a grind. The artwork is lovely too. I also own on switch.
Very fun rpg with beautiful art. Though it is a little short, and the rpg elements are a little shallow, i would play more like it. Worth the price.
I pre-ordered this game because of Amano's art. But life and the usual stuff kept me from playing it then. On top of that back then it was a ubiconnect exclusive for PC anyway, think it was the game that forced me to make that account. So, so often, I've simply not had that launcher installed and forgot about this game.
Roll on 10 years, I'm trying to play all the backlog, at least trying them enough to have an opinion (why force myself to finish a game I don't enjoy, currently focusing on Steam just for the shear volume, and my main platform plus having a steam deck sure makes challenging that back log easier, I've even been trying to migrate any games I can to steam, from sales just for convenience in my life. But I didn't want to do that with this game, cause its not a series or a game I play, I only bought it for a connection to an artist I like. But it became the last game on that launcher that I don't have. So I finally played it. Completed it in a couple of days.
I absolutely love it, 10 years to play but absolute joy to finally do, its fun, its beautiful, it's music is fantastic, the story made me smile at times and yes, cry a bit too, the way its told and narrated is brilliant and everything is tonally correct, even the 3D model for Aurora in this 2D handpainted world does not stand out at all. It's been so long since a game made me feel this way just playing though it, especially tackling a backlog of what feels like shovelware at times certain from many bundles etc over the years. I had to have this in my steam library, easy play on my deck, role on the winter sale and for a cup of coffee I own the game a second time (at least I played this one!)
So far my experience on Steam deck has been great, no issues with saves or launching, it controls fine, looks great still and runs good. I'm not going to deny those launcher issues aren't there, no doubt they are or were at least and might be again depending on what ubisoft decides to do in their infinite (lack of) wisdom. But for now it seems to be a very stable and playable game and one so gorgeous it is worthy of your time.
It's so sad there won't be more like it, Bastion is probably a close one, and I guess most of super giant games count, but not like this light hearted joyful fable that exists.
The art is exceptional, and the combat system is fun. Everything rhymes and the story is nice. I had a lot of fun and really started getting into it and then it suddenly it just finished unexpectedly. I wish it would have been a longer game as it can be completed in just 10 hours. Totally fun and worth it though.
I think this is cute but you have to be ok with the endless poetry. It's A LOT
I've played through this from start to end on switch, and now playing it here.
Child of Light is probably my biggest surprise that i jumped into this year. I expected something that would just pass a little time, but instead I got something that hit every sense just right. This is probably the closest a game has ever come to a perfect work of art that I have ever seen any come. it is amazing.
But the weird thing is that, because of being a sensory overload, it is exhausting to play in long blocks. There is so much I have to take in at once, I just need breaks.
But every second played it just full of love. This will go down as one of the best games I have ever played...easy.
Drawback: Ubisoft.
Very charming and fun game. The music stays in my mind long after I've stopped playing. The gameplay is simple enough to get used to but not too easy as to get bored with.
Not flawless; there is a glitch that makes only a fourth of the dialogue appear unless a new save file is started. Also, about half the time I open the game it and hit continue it crashes but then runs perfectly when I open it again.
Child of Light is a delightful little game: engaging, enjoyable and charming throughout, with the only negative being a potential rushed ending section which makes the game appear as though the developers ran out of time or money at the very end. Many players may disagree, being glad that the story doesn't needlessly drag on, but it felt like it had more to give; ending a little abruptly rather than appropriately.
But as was the case in 2014, it is still difficult to recommend in its current state - courtesy of the mandated Ubisoft Connect. In order to play, this game requires a one-time sign into Ubisoft's own 3rd party launcher. From here, the game can be played in offline mode, without any internet connection. This makes it more tedious to play this game on a new device, each one requiring an installation of Ubisoft Connect, leaving the customer with a looming dread that their access to the game may be revoked. For example, users could purchase and run this game on the defunct Windows Vista/7 in 2014. But the current version of Ubisoft Connect no longer functions on these systems without the user intervening and downloading old installation files; ones that could simply one day vanish.
This is a criticism that can often be directed at Steam itself, and what is here is just a simplification. We could go back and forth on this matter of supporting old systems and offering offline downloads, but let's not. Regardless, it's still the case that this process of installing (unnecessary) clients has to be done twice - for no good reason.
In other words, it is an attempt to siphon users from Steam to Ubisoft, gaining some account and system data and the like in the process, which could serve such purposes as flaunting to potential clients their vast, and partially inflated, user-base. The saving grace is that this single player game doesn't require a permanent online connection. That would displease me immensely. As is stands, it's a mild grievance and annoyance.
The moment i am writing this, is the moment i finished the game and what i can say is this game is a MASTERPIECE good soundtrack , good lore/storytelling, good bosses and a good ending everytime i hear the flute song i cry definitely a 10/10 from ubisoft if you have the money buy and play it perfect game.
AWESOME
Beautiful and concise.
I feel it was quite hard at the start (played in casual).
Easier as we go, but enough difficulty overall.
Really love the battle system with its active time and slowing mechanic.
The writing and the world is beautiful.
The dialogues are like poetry and the world feels like a nicely illustrated storybook, especially the towns.
Very Fun! similar to a DND campaign in terms of story!
I just hope this beautiful game needs to be sequel, i really like the Characters like Aurora or Norah/Nox😢. But fuck the Ubisoft, They really shutdown the Ubiart Framework like Rayman series. And then, Opening the game need to open UPlay account and i lost my savegame because uplay update.
Genuinely one of the most nostalgic games for me, totally worth all the battles for the story.
very fun with minimal grinding and a good story and art. combat can be a little repetitive but that can be said for any game after a while. would say if you enjoy rpgs get this game. has everything you could want in that category. 9/10
As much as I enjoy this game, I cannot in good conscious recommend any game attached to Uplay. I had 12 hours logged in this game, just about to complete the final area and finish the storyline, when I got an Ubisoft Uplay update and it deleted my save file.
So far Uplay has eaten my save files for Rayman Legends, Far Cry 3, and now Child of Light. I will never again trust Ubisoft with my business.
Wish the whole game would be voiced but it's still a good game.
i got severe motion sickness simply by jumping around in tutorial. not recommended for people like me.
Growing as I fly
I dream in watercolor
Why should I awake?
I played this game around the time it was originally released. It's hard to remember details, but I do remember liking the game quite a bit. The story is a melancholy one, and the artwork and soundtrack are top notch. This game is definitely more about the experience than it is about delivering deep turn-based gameplay mechanics, but what is here is really fun without ever being too much of a challenge. Despite the fairy tale charm though, I would not consider this a game for kids. It's just a nice casual turn-based RPG for people allured by its artistic premise.
This game crashes on start up. Do not purchase.
The Art and soundtrack really make this game what it is, the gameplay is serviceable but far from great.

And I'll be waiting for a sign
You're coming back and you have found your path 👑
I had this back on Xbox, and loved it. I wanted to try playing it with my daughter and it was on sale, but apparently, even though the steam deck recognizes the 8bitdo 2 controller, ubisoft doesn't, so we can't play this on the TV. Ubisoft, you didn't even have to make a new game, just make sure it doesn't treat the steam deck like a pc and actually allow bluetooth controllers to work. This is pathetic.
work of art
Gotta love this one. Good story and visuals
A great turn-based RPG, that feels like playing through a fairy tale, which was very much the intent of the developers. Beautiful music and art direction.
What a delightful piece of magic <3 SO incredibly enjoyable from start 2 finish w/ amazing turn-based combat + a wholesome tale to accompany it. so charming, a must play :)
Passable RPG with cute characters and theming. Get it on sale and you won't regret it.
Absolutely beautiful game from start to finish.
The gameplay didn't grab me that much as someone who doesn't play many turn-base RPGs but the story, characters, and presentation is what sells it and it doesn't overstay its welcome. All of it would make an awesome sequel which I'd love to see one day even if its unlikely we would get one.
This game is one of the most unique games I've ever played. its amazing and fun and the story is intriguing and the gameplay is fun. It requires some skill in strategy but its a great game to play for all ages.
peak.
Really engaging turn based combat, highly recommend
Requires Ubi soft play network which is defunct (for this game). Basically unplayable. A real shame it had promise.
This is a visually stunning game with a beautiful art style and enchanting music that truly complement each other. The gameplay teaches some valuable lessons—like how going oonga boonga is definitely not the way; the defend mechanic is a must, especially in the late game. The ability to interrupt enemies before they finish casting adds a cool strategic layer to the combat system that I enjoyed.
One of my favorite features was the oculi crafting system. It’s such a neat mechanic that lets you customize your character’s abilities and tailor your playstyle. I loved collecting different oculi and playing with the various combinations.
However, I found the gameplay a bit restrictive at times. You can only obtain items from chests or as rewards for battles, which limits your ability to stock up on certain things and go oonga boonga. Plus, if you accidentally mess up your skill tree, there’s no way to undo it.
The rhyming dialogue felt forced and disrupted the flow of the story for me. The mix of a children-focused narrative with more complex gameplay creates an intriguing experience. Despite the odd balance, Child of Light is a fun game, and I would recommend it.
I love this game

Ubisoft won't let me play because U-play doesn't recognize that I have this even though I bought it here on Steam and went back and forth with their terrible Support team for over 3 hours and gave them every bit of evidence they asked for to show I owned it.
U-play games on Steam need the same Warning/Notice that games that require a PSN account have.
This game is perfect if you like adventure and quests, also magic. The beautiful watercolor landscapes and the music is fasinating, I really recomend this game!!
DO NOT PURCHASE Ubisoft will take your right to your game away from you. They said they cannot find a purchase on my account with all the proof I've shown do not give them your money unless you are willing to lose the game.
I was enamored by this game since I was 12, often watching full game play playthroughs yearly. A decade later, I finally got the opportunity to play it myself, and it's as charming and beautiful as I remembered. I will likely return to this fairytale every year, and if I have children someday, this is definitely a game I would love to show them. <3
