Honestly you're spending more time watching a walkthrough on where to go than actually knowing where to go for the first time playing this. Though the graphics make up for all whats negative

The duality of Stalburg.

In one game, I am Kirin Hiesenbee, Slumlord Kingpin of a mushroom empire.

In this one, I am Markku Siltanen, underpaid and overworked civil engineer.
It's hard to put into words precisely what I like about this game. It's not that it isn't exciting. I die, and nearly die, constantly. I've bumbled Mark over unexploded ordinance, into electrified puddles, onto burning vents, and into flooded tunnels. It's not that the puzzles are too easy, in fact (much like real life), most puzzles have multiple solutions and none of them are strictly easy. It's not that the game isn't scary. In fact, I'd go as far as to call this the best liminal horror game. There is no monster that will jump out and scream at you, there is only a hobo trying hard to keep quiet so you don't call the cops. The groan and creak of pipes and concrete fight with the sounds of distant mumbles and coughs to make you wonder if you really are alone.

The game truly excels in two main areas: Exploration and Visuals.
The exploration is absolutely top notch, Valve should be jealous for how well these devs have made linear levels that have multiple paths through them. Heck, going back and replaying the game, I'm realizing how many puzzles I just platformed my way around solving, and I'm not even certain whether or not that's intentional design (apologies to any suddenly terrified devs, I will always break any linear progression, this is strictly a me problem) Searching for documents and damage to photograph, finding empty geocaches, and the coveted secrets.
Visually the game is the best I have ever seen any Source engine game look. I can't tell you how much like a scandinavian city Stalburg looks like, but I can only assume it's as accurate to your major Scandinavian cities as the bridges are to bridges and the service tunnels are to service tunnels, that is to say: Very close to real, with just enough creative smudging to ease gameplay and exploration, and to cut off routes that you might otherwise wander down diagetically. Only an actual honest-to-goodness civil engineer could tell the difference between some of these models and the real thing, and even then the models all include subtle details that throw off even an infrastructure enthusiast like myself. Unless you're an actual professional, this game is completely realistic.

The real star of the show, however, is the game's story.
Infra has two stories. A twisting and complex narrative about how industrial competition and conspirasism inevitable leads to corruption, and "Markku Siltanen has a very bad day". You can keep your nose clean and ignore the papers and docs around (though this will make a lot of puzzles much harder), focusing on documenting infrastructure damage and repairing neglected equipment, or you can dig deep into the secrets behind the collapse of industry, the failure of infrastructure, and how a feud two insane businessmen lead to the neglected desolation of an entire city's infrastructure.

This game has a way of sticking with you. There's just something about the story and environments that continue to pop into my head long after I've beaten it, I've never played a game quite like it.

I'd love a sequel or DLC. They have another game called Obenseuer that takes place in the same universe, and it is a great game, but it doesn't quite scratch the itch that this game does.

Infra is half puzzle half exploration game with heavy focus on text based lore.

90% of puzzle parts work fine. There are variety of difficulty in puzzles from which some require heavy logical thinking while others are more finding stuff and using it. The bad 10% of puzzles requires extra detailed scavenging of every part of the map and/or backtracking. Overall the puzzles are the best part of this game.

Exploration is done for lore and to photograph "corruption", which are structural or other kind of issues one finds in world. Using the camera is basically the main point of the game, you are inspector after all. Only that there are so huge amount of these things to photograph that it gets very boring at some point. To add to that problem, there is nothing really in the game that says if you have done good or bad in your job. Maybe there is some different endings, but that does not make the task of doing the thing any more interesting. At very least your collegues or boss should acknowledge your good job, to show that somebody actually cares that you do your job. You can play the game as puzzle game without using the camera any more that you want, but its a shame that the main point is not developed any further from the initial idea.

Lore is... Well lets just say that there is lots of reading and if reading is not for you, whole game will feel very confusing. Some of the lore is confusing even when one reads everything. And some reading is required to advance in the game. One big problem is that you don't save any of the text anywhere. Meaning that you need to remember everything or keep your own notes to build any kind of bigger picture. I would also like the world to be explained little better; why for example our main character can't call his boss or police or other people for help. Instead he is stuck wandering endless tunnel network with real possibility of dying at many occasions.

Overall, while there are some parts that feel grindy or boring especially at middle sections, the basic gameplay works just fine. Its interesting concept that for me raised the question how the concept gets used and developed through the game. It just didn't, which was bummer, and thats why in my opinion the game should have been few chapters shorter to feel more rewarding as whole experience. Solid 7/10.

This game may appeal to those who enjoy walking simulators and urban exploration. If you're not into either, don't buy it and don't spend time playing it.

I understand that this game is old and started as a mod, but it lacks too many aspects compared to modern games: No inventory, no journal, no maps, etc. The flashlight battery lasts maybe 5 minutes in game. Is that supposed to be a challenge? And the game is not short, there are too many places to explore, puzzles to solve, but without aids the game becomes a chore.

Anyway, I give credit to the developers for creating those maps, industrial complexes and such. But the rest is not satisfying.

If you enjoy "walking simulators", then this will likely appeal to you.

This game is an improvement over many other games in the genre thanks to the puzzle elements and hidden collectables. I did enjoy looking for geocaches and broken infrastructure to photograph.

The mystery story was interesting but some elements felt silly. Other than 2 levels, you don't see anyone at all and the game felt empty for it. I appreciate this was likely done to reduce development time and cut down on voice acting but it ended up doing a disservice to the game.

Certain levels look really good, even given its age but the majority of the game is spent in underground tunnels or dilapidated buildings with lots of greys and browns. Very dull.

It took me about 25 hours to play-through, mostly to collect everything and some going back on myself here and there but I'm sure others could blast through this in half the time.

I wouldn't recommend the game at full price but reseasonable at 25%+ off.

If you have no sense of direction, INFRA is not for you. Like, not at all. Just give up.
If you are simply looking for a room-escape kind of puzzle chain, I do not recommend INFRA. The more eager you are to progress, the more the game drives you nuts.

Just completed this game (2 of 4 endings). 35h of playtime and I had only uncovered around 1/3 of the game's story. (I knew it cuz I checked the wiki for the rest of the lore, I don't recommend doing it before completing the game at least once)
I once thought this game has a lack of proper hints, but after completing it, I realized I had just played it the wrong way. INFRA isn't just puzzles. It's a VERY slow-paced game mixed of exploration, engineering and detective work.
You don't explore in order to progress, instead you progress when there's nothing new to explore.
If you want to get the most out of this game, take your time, go through every corner of the map section, and if you enjoy being a detective, screenshot and note down mysterious story-related information. When you think you have multiple choices, be generous with saves. The game gives you 4 separate save slots for a reason. I hope you can get more out of the game than me who's given up and read 3 quarters of the game content on YouTube and Stalburg Wiki.
Like, it's been 9 years since the game's release, and there are still puzzle codes unsolved by the entire community. That's how much possible content INFRA has.

Absolutely one of my favourite games ever. The atmosphere is often like a horror game but there are absolutely no jumpscares (save for one that you have to really go out of your way to trigger). You'll get the best experience by keeping notes (or making a crazy wall) but it's fun even if you don't bother to read each and every note there is. You'll probably get stuck multiple times on obscure puzzles; I wouldn't shame you for googling for hints every now and then.

This game is wonderfully simple in concept (take pictures of crumbling infrastructure, try to fix things when possible) but has an absolutely wonderfully realized world where the city itself is a character.

The puzzles are also generally good bar the few that require scouring for a tiny item in a large area or the very strict time limit on something near the end. Most of the time it's a matter of hitting the right buttons in the right order. I know that sounds boring, but the way it's integrated into the world makes it scratch a mental itch that I didn't know I had.

If I had to find a flaw in it, it would be the voice acting. It's never bad enough that it totally takes me out of a scene, but some lines feel out of place. (Though shout out to the power plant manager for putting as much passion as possible into his lines.)

Boy what a game...

I have spent 30 hours in this game... And boy what a game... For a Source mod that was developed over 10 years ago, I have to say that the amount of work and details are far beyond a Triple A studio.

If you love exploring games+walking simulators and puzzles, then this is for you. It is long (or so it seemed to me), Some of the puzzle were quite simple, other gave me a few headaches (some because of the poor level design or simply because i was stupid.) There are multiple endings and paths. To some levels you can finish a chapter in 2 or 3 ways. If you're a completitionist, this game will give you nightmares. It almost impossible to finish the game 100% without watching walkthroughs on YT or guides.

Overall it was fun, it was interesting, the story was pretty good, not demanding high spec components to run it. Give it a try!

Infra is one of those games that oozes atmosphere and definitely is a walking simulator but with massive twist. Do not expect to have a 5 hours experience and then be done, the game is at least 20 hours on a first play-through and much much more if you want to go completionist.

The level of details and scope of some of the maps is genuinely impressive and the art direction is top notch. The underlying story is also something interesting.

The only major downside is that some of the maps are EXTREMELY unoptimised, so much so that the game can crash repeatedly on the largest maps and I recommend saving often (I have had several crashes in a row even after using the advice of reducing some of the settings which did nothing for me.) This somewhat soured my experience with the game but not as such as I wouldn't recommend it.

The second downside is that the game is still sometimes littered with bugs, some minors, some more important, but given the scope and the size of the team it was, I guess, a bit impossible to avoid, sad but not necessarily a deal breaker.

The other caveat, this is not for everyone, not everyone will be enthralled by the story, the atmosphere and the exploration, but if you know that you like those type of games, this is definitely a must play.

I have played many many hours of this game. I 100%ed it a couple years ago, soon after I played it for the first time. I've played it at least yearly since there. It's still been pretty challenging to write a review for this game and describe exactly why I think it was worth so much of my time.

The basic gameplay is exploring around, taking photographs of damage and documents, and solving puzzles, but that doesn't really explain what made the game compelling to me. The adventure, the puzzles, and the plot (which begins in the most mundane manner possible, but gradually becomes a solid mystery with its own twists and turns) are all well and good, but for me it is the gradual unfolding of the world the game takes place in that made this a worthy game.

It's maybe fitting that a game about the crumbling infrastructure of a city would make the city itself into a character, but there are layers to Stalburg that I never would have expected, with rich detail to the unusual life of the city placed around every corner in the construction of the environment itself. You'll walk through the industrial bones of Stalburg and find what has moved in to the carcasses of tunnels and factories that have been all but forgotten.

There is a rabbit hole to go down here, if you want to. There are multiple plotlines that develop in parallel over the course of the game, numerous secrets, and even some hidden collectibles. If you play the game more than once, there will be details you didn't notice the first time or that are re-contextualized by understanding what comes later.

All of this is done with a healthy injection of humor, often from the strange (and occasionally somewhat absurd) things you will find as you explore, but for me this only served to enhance the atmosphere.

If you are on the fence about trying this game out, I would easily recommend that you give it a try, especially if you are looking at it during a steam sale, when it is certainly available for a cheap price.

I just beat this game after a little over 18 hours. It was not an 100% playthrough, and there were certainly things I missed. But I experienced a fair chunk of the game and I have a decent bit to say on this game. Despite the fact that I (generally) like this game and find a lot to love about it, I am going to recommend against purely because I don't think most people will enjoy it. If, however, you're the type who enjoys slow-paced, puzzle-narrative sorts of games where the main focus is walking, occasionally reading, and paying attention to the finer details, then try this game. Otherwise, read ahead.

For background (without spoilers): INFRA takes place in the fictional city of Stalburg, and your character Mark works for an organization who is tasked with examining and then repairing broken buildings and structures within the city. As such, the premise of the game is to visit sites, take pictures of damages, and report back on your findings. However, the game's basic premise quickly develops into much more.

Since I have a lot to say and Steam's review length is limited (as well as people's attention spans), I'll format this by pros and cons, describing each point individually. From now on, there will be occasional spoilers, but I'll limit what I can. You've been warned.

Pros:
1. Aesthetics in this game are well done. While this game does run on the Source engine (and plays more like Portal than Half Life) the devs have really pushed the engine to the limit and made the game look really good. The graphics are sharp, clear, and expressive. Not only that, but the environments are fun to just exist in. When I first started playing, I really enjoyed walking around and soaking the scenery in. It feels like proper exploration, which is good.
2. The soundtrack is great. It's intense when things are ramping up and quiet and reflective when things settle down. In underground sewers the music is almost hollow and rather foreboding. In a high tower the music turns toward soft pianos as you overlook the entire city. The music grows violent and bombastic when you find yourself in life-threatening situations. It's not an all-timer sort of soundtrack, but it's good.
3. The game rewards thorough exploration and patience. This, I think, is my favorite aspect of the game. There are all sorts of collectibles and spots where pictures can be taken. Finding the means to progress, too, demands that you slow down, read signs and journal entries, and check every corner. Each puzzle involves a different method of thinking, which provides a relatively consistent challenge. Each moment where you finally nail down that solution is very satisfying. In this way INFRA proves immersive, drawing you in and hooking you until the end. Simply looking around is the best aspect of this game, combined with the varied, detailed, and immersive environments. Uncovering the secrets of Stalburg is also the best part of the story.

Cons:
1. Instructions for puzzles can often be vague. This one was probably where I was most frustrated with this game. Overall, puzzles are fun to solve and engage the player in unique ways. But a common issue with puzzles in this game is that the instructions the game leaves for you are either non-existent or really vague. There are many instances where this is the case: the cell tower in chapter 3, the coffee maker and floodgate wire puzzle in chapter 7, the engine-crane puzzle in chapter 9, etc. I won't describe each in detail, but all too often does this game leave the player with minimal instruction or insert puzzles which wander too far from previous formula, making reaching the correct solution no longer a test of attention and intellect, but of patience and a lot of guessing.
2. I don't think batteries were a necessary addition. No puzzle game I know has resource management as a feature. It just doesn't make sense for a game like this; mostly it comes off as superfluous. Even if you wanted to disagree with me there (which is fine), there is also the fact that the game gives you so many batteries if you just put a little effort into looking that it basically renders the mechanic little more than an inconvenient button push. After the third chapter, there was never a point where I had less than seven batteries for either the camera or flashlight. In fact, the game gets rid of flashlight batteries at the end of Chapter 8, which made the game both more enjoyable and less annoying to have to constantly re-feed the flashlight with batteries which die in like two minutes.
3. Voice acting is subpar. This one doesn't need too much explanation and for me it isn't a huge deal but it's worth pointing out. It's evident Mark's VA hasn't done much VA work in the past, which is fine, but it makes his dialogue very stiff. Sometimes it honestly adds to the comedy of the game, but largely it detracts from important moments and makes the lackluster dialogue more unimpressive.
4. Crashing and frame drops are not uncommon. Crashing is easily fixed by lowering the paged pool memory to low (and if you choose not to you will crash often), which does have the unfortunate and rather bizarre side affect of lowering texture fidelity, making finer text hard to read almost to the point of being incomprehensible. As for the frame drops, they aren't too common (in my experience) or frequent enough to be a large issue, but in bigger areas populated with lots of moving parts and props, you can easily dip well below 60 fps.
5. Mark's job and the gameplay do not align. This dude does so much B&E throughout the game it's insane. And for all the places he goes, most of which he was not actually assigned to go, the only time Mark says he doesn't need to take pictures is in an abandoned steel factory. But taking pictures in the middle of some random street is not off limits? This game and the picture-taking mechanic would have honestly made much more sense if Mark was a journalist with a lead trying to uncover Stalburg's corrupt history, since that's what Mark is doing most of the time here anyway. This dichotomy between gameplay and character really started to bother me in Act 3 where Mark literally just starts breaking into people's homes.
6. While the story is pretty good, it can be hard to follow. Honestly, this issue could have been solved with even just a little UI. Source games are not known for menus or UI (unless you're GMod, I guess), but having a "corkboard" for evidence that let's players go over journal entries and documents or important story points would have been really helpful. Even just letting the player review their camera roll would've been cool, since you're always photographing documents anyway. I would've also liked names in the subtitles for whoever is speaking. it would've made knowing who is who in the audio recordings easier, since their voices are hard to differentiate.
7. Timed sections are annoying. This one is mostly personal preference but the timed sections in this game are weak and frustrating. There is at least one timed section per chapter outside of the first and pretty much all of them are more frustrating than engaging.
8. Your boss is an absolute rat b***ard. This is might be me nitpicking, but holy shit your boss is genuinely the worst character in the game and it's honestly him who ruins a lot of the story in this game. This asshole sends Mark out for this job and has him running around the city for the whole rest of the game doing dirty work be can't be bothered with. A whole act is dedicated to Mark going back to the office because his boss won't call him a cab. F**k that guy.

Overall rating: 6.5/10. Not bad, but being plagued by so many issues, it's hard to place this game besides other puzzle greats like The Talos Principle and INFRA's native Portal series.

It starts strong, and you visit a bunch of cool industrial locations and fix problems and find some interesting documents. However, it falls off a cliff in quality around the middle of the game, overstays its welcome, and then you are just going through the motions to finally see what it was all leading up to. That is, if it doesn't start crashing every 5 minutes for you in the later chapters.
First half of the game is probably an 8/10, but the second one drags it down way too much.

INFRA is the perfect urban exploration game that has a great balance of puzzles and exploration. The game highly encourages exploring every nook and cranny of different realistic locations, such as decrepit tunnels, water treatment plants, and a dam. The game is littered with collectibles, ranging from photographable damage to corruption documents. Depending on how much exploration you do, the more the underlying story becomes revealed, which ultimately affects the ending of the game and your knowledge of the full picture.

Love the environments and characters, hate how confusing and unintuitive the puzzles are. Half the time I have no clue what to do, in what order, or even where to go. By now I've gotten so frustrated that I don't feel like playing anymore, even though I really wanna see the rest of the world and such.

I play plenty of slow-paced exploratory and puzzle games and thus really don't mind that type of gameplay, but this ain't it chief.

Some-fvскing-how it's duller than Dear Esther.
I'm not sure the soulless corporate angle was the right one to attack the player's id with (spend 20 minutes of intro-tutorial on trying to maze through the concrete dungeon of an office complex and paperwork to start the game, then keep listening to completely disinterested narrative from a jaded corpo drone protag) - if the main character doesn't want to do anything in the game, why the h*ll should I?

Possibly some of the most beautiful environments in the old source engine, you can tell a lot of work went into the locations, places to make it really feel alive.

As you move through the locations, you take pictures with your camera and this is quite an interesting experience.
I actually enjoyed having to document damages which may cause security hazards.
Be it from loose concrete, broken bridges, leaking pipes or malfunctioning terminals, this concept is pretty novel as your character remarks about these faults and will contact his agency regarding the damage.

Initially, I was pretty hooked because the game has a great atmosphere and looks decent (it has aged a bit) but crafts an compelling world that invites you to explore.
As mentioned, the facilities that you visit are mysterious and will get your imagination going.

However the game is let down by poor voice acting, some incredible obtuse puzzles, awful platforming paired with slow movement. (Why change HL2s climbing mechanics for this odd "climb up" thing that works only some of the time?)

Some of the later levels become an absolute chore to play through!
I just got bored because every puzzle seems to resolve around pumps and some interface.
There were some intriguing points here and there but it wasn't to exciting.

I love walking simulators and puzzles, but this one did not pass the vibe check.
It was taking more and more time to get from one plotpoint to the other the further into the game I got.
Same goes for puzzles, they got less and less engaging.
The positives - most of the puzzles are good, make sense and are solvable with a little bit of attention and common sense, a few struggle to convey details to you that are necessary to be solved but almost all can be worked through by just stopping and paying attention to your environment.

As a puzzle game it at times can be incredibly obtuse, inconsistent and unrewarding.
You can progress through some levels very quickly with a path to follow is logical and legible, but many levels consist of painful backtracking with unclear motive, and picking up unremarkable and unnamed keys that are vital to progression - with no inventory system or diegetic/non-diegetic hints, the result of many areas leaves me feeling confused, unfulfilled and demotivated.

Game uses a hold crouch and there is no option to use a toggle crouch.
The central mystery is revealed too early to bother continuing on to unravel it or maybe expose it.
There are jumping puzzles and sections which don't work very well because the jump is equivalent to standing on your tip-toes and it feels clunky.
The climbing mechanic doesn't always trigger and like the jumping feels clumsy, awkward and slow.
The worst part is that taking pictures of everything is a core mechanic but, the battery dies after a dozen photos which forces photo rationing.

There are other design absurdities.
Managing flashlight batteries makes sense in survival and horror games, but it's simply daft in an exploration game.
And the fact that your character, after repeated cataclysms and near-death experiences (or in my case, multiple post-death experiences), is expected to continue his trivial job of photographing cement cracks is laughable.

It's clear the developers are taxing the engine as far as it will go and it's led to some areas of the game being borderline unplayable.
FPS drops are constant, the optimization is very bad.
I'm playing the game on a machine that is well over the recommended system specifications, so the issue seems to be with how overtaxed Source is on this one rather than my machine not being up to snuff.
Leads to some areas being filled with frequent crashes to desktop - at their most frequent, some people were looking at a hard crash to desktop every few minutes of gameplay, causing them to have to constantly restart the game client.

I would normally tentatively recommend this game, however the aforementioned stability issues put this below the threshold for what I would consider a minimal viable product.
Check it out if they patch the crashes, but as it stands it doesn't look like it plays well at all on modern hardware.
If its on sale and you enjoy puzzles sure get it, but at full price its not worth the frustrations.
Unfortunately, I can not recommend this game.

A cool, atmospheric and sometimes funny first person puzzle exploration game that is held back by obtuse gameplay and, worst of all, frequent stability issues.

It's clear the developers are taxing the engine as far as it will go and it's led to some areas of the game being borderline unplayable. I'm playing the game on a machine that is well over the recommended system specifications, so the issue seems to be with how overtaxed Source is on this one rather than my machine not being up to snuff. Leads to some areas being filled with frequent crashes to desktop - at their most frequent, I was looking at a hard crash to desktop every few minutes of gameplay, causing me to have to constantly restart the game client.

Also some questionable design choices that are more of a matter of taste - the flashlight and camera are both tied to finite survival horror style resources for much of the game, which seems somewhat at odds with the intent for this game to be a slower paced affair that encourages you to take your time, explore thoroughly and fully take in the sights - the game does massively increase the number of batteries you get later before switching out for a long life flashlight that doesn't need batteries at all, which suggests the developers were well aware the mechanic wasn't particularly well received, or at least wasn't bringing much to the table gameplay wise. The insistence of finite resources against regular puzzle adventure game gameplay continues later, where you're left in a large, buggy area and are given a finite amount of currency that you have to spend continuously to explore, very much not a good idea in my personal opinion!

The positives - MOST of the puzzles are good, make sense and are solvable with a little bit of attention and common sense, a few struggle to convey details to you that are necessary to be solved but almost all can be worked through by just stopping and paying attention to your environment. The voice acting varies from OK to pretty terrible and the story is a mix of grounded and absolutely bonkers - sometimes characters act like reasonable people and sometimes they're space aliens in human form, and it's a bit of a pot luck on how they're going to act at any given moment.

I would normally tentatively recommend this game, however the aforementioned stability issues put this below the threshold for what I would consider a minimal viable product. Check it out if they patch the crashes, but as it stands it doesn't look like it plays well at all on modern hardware.

I really enjoyed it! I felt a little confined with the way the the devs made the character walk and move around. But if you can get passed that. I like the puzzles and the things that get your heart pumping when things get dicey.

INFRA is an easy recommend to anyone who enjoys adventure games; it's not without its flaws, but overall it is one of the more enjoyable adventure game experiences I've had. It's a winner.

First and foremost, it's absolutely effing huge. I was expecting a short, atmospheric piece like Firewatch, and about eight hours in I started to realize I was in for a much longer haul and a much different experience. I'm writing this review just after completing two of the (apparently) three endings, with 36 out of 74 achievements, at 36 hours spent.

And no matter what anyone else says: sweet fancy Moses, INFRA is not a walking simulator. A game is not a walking simulator simply because it has no combat. There is so much to do here that is not walking.

INFRA reminds me a lot of Dishonored or Stray in that these are also UrbEx games featuring an extrahuman protagonist, but here your superpowers are an engineering degree and the right to open doors marked "Authorized Personnel Only." That will sound boring to some people, perhaps, but if it sounds as exciting to you as it does to me, do not sleep on INFRA. Snap it up.

The game really succeeds at immersing the player in its world; Stalburg has a healthy dose of Terry Gilliam absurdism, but it feels real in a way that a lot of more interactive and populated environments don't. I think this has a lot to do with how the player is expected to engage with the city.

You do a lot of touching and installing and inspecting, and at the end of the day you develop a feeling of responsibility for this place that I'm not sure a game has ever given me before. There are no enemies or monsters to distract you; it is just you and the environment, even when the action gets frantic.

The environments are mostly linear, at least through the first two acts, but many of them offer multiple options for progression. I know there are areas in some of the chapters that I never found a way into or that I never came to understand the purpose of. There is a lot of replayability here.

The protagonist, Mark, is now a fast favorite of mine. The first time you hear his voice acting, you will cringe, but it grows on you. He's got this laconic delivery reminiscent of Peter Stormare and a dry wit that just perfectly captures the character's unflappable competence. There are no one-liners and no banter here, just a remarkably capable dude left to himself in some lonely places, who is perhaps rightly impressed with himself.

I wish that the photos you take and the papers you document over the course of the game were accessible to the player in some way after taking them, so that there was a log of the player's journey. That would have been nice, but there is also something to be said for the game's minimalist interface; there are no menus of any kind to take you out of the world.

A studio being able to achieve that is something special. On occasion you may find yourself wishing for an inventory, but the game never really suffers for the absence of one.

If I have any complaints, they are these:
- Reading hand- and typewritten notes in varying degrees of darkness and gloom is perhaps not the most engaging game mechanic I've ever experienced. I found a lot of documents I could not actually understand.

- Ugh, early Source engine ladder climbing. There are a lot of ladders in this game, St. Benedict preserve us.

- Many sequences overstay their welcomes. There's a piece of graffiti you'll see a few times throughout the game that says "Hallway Simulator 2016," which would feel like self-deprecating humor if it were not so on the nose. Long tunnels devoid of content are expected in a game like this, but INFRA still manages to have what feels like too many. If i'm being fair, I think this is a side effect of how "real" some of the levels are. This is not a game that toys with perception, perspective, and hidden teleportation -- you get the distinct impression that this level design is excruciatingly honest.

- When the game ratchets up the action, many of these scenarios seem like they would be impossible to resolve on a first attempt without a healthy dose of luck. A ceiling will collapse in a particular way over time, for example, requiring the player to move at intervals to remain safe, but with no way to know the safe zones other than trial and error. I wouldn't go so far as to call these rage-game mechanics, but they belong to the same family. Fortunately the action-man stuff is pretty limited, although the game does end with a big example.

- Sadly, the game does lose a lot of polish in Act III, when the environments switch from almost exclusively linear to a more open-world design. Some really tight puzzle concepts in the early game give way to a lot of frustrating searching for small hidden objects, repetitive movement, and conflicting feelings that you are both missing a lot of content and desperate to move on to the next area.

There's a lot of exasperating confusion over what the game wants you to do next. It rarely stumped me for long, but I don't have a lot of patience for puzzles that are difficult to execute after the solution has been found, and Act III has a bunch of these.

Still, the feeling of accomplishment and responsibility that the game gave me through Act II was enough to carry me through Act III pretty quickly, and I don't think an indie game of INFRA's high caliber should suffer for a bit of a rush to the close.
