I can honestly recommend this game a lot! I'm having a blast with it. I love the combat system, characters development, locations design, it's constantly fresh. And most of all - the brilliant storytelling!
SHORT
You get what you pay for, the game has several issues, but I think it's fun. I would recommend this game to turn-based game lovers (only if it's on 90% sale).
LONG
Blackguards is a turn-based RPG, the game has an intriguing story and pretty decent voice acting. If you like Baldur's Gate 3 or XCOM, you'll enjoy the gameplay, but don't expect the same level of quality.
The skill and talent system may seem complex at first, but experienced players will get the hang of it pretty quickly. Despite the complex system, there's no way to re-spec your companions, you're stuck with the default composition.
The game is quite clunky and feels unfinished in many aspects, it lacks a lot of polish. The worst examples of this are random crashes (there are guides on Steam teaching a simple fix), questlines out of order, and completely bugged achievements.
It should take you between 5 and 15 hours to complete the game, depending on how far you go into the side quests.
Is it worth it? Well, when this game is 90% off it's practically free, so if you like this style of game, I think it's worth it, I had a lot of fun with it. Just remember to fix the crashes. And if you're going to do the achievements, check out my guide! :)
Fun game, I enjoy it. Nice interface. Good story
I really tried to enjoy it but, not only it's not for me, but in the final chapter, when you finally do the 13th test against (in my case) Aurelia, not only the fight is a slogfest with a constantly replenishing boss with magic that can put a member on the floor for 10 turns, debuff you while boosting her evasion but, if she runs out of potions and mana, she just won't act at all, soft-locking you from the fight in her turn, forcing a load and retry. not even the blessing of the 12 gods helped enough, I'm dropping the franchise then and there. Not gonna subject myself to a whole second game with this system
Very amateurish turn based RPG. Dont be fooled, its not a tactical game or a strategy. It is a really basic RPG and nothing more. There are things that can be liked about this game, mainly engaging story and character writing... and thats actually it. Well... and maybe price during sales. Everything else feels like this type of game are not exactly developers forte... and its true, as Daedalic are ( were, they are dead ) known for adventure games. Every other aspect of the game, including most important one - direction/design is rather subpar for its time... and frankly for other times too. I doubt that if Blackguards came out in the late 90's, they would got any kind of substantial recognition either.
I was rather hesitant to give thumb down to Blackguards, because even thou game at times annoyed me alot, its story and characters in the end did swayed me to refrain from that action. But 4th chapter was that final straw that broke the camels back. My annoyance meter got filled and thumb down is now given.
Not bad, but not great either.
[h3]Broken achievements, many crashes, bugs, lags.
buggy. some cant even start game (input not supported black screen) or it locks up system random in battle. Lacklustre story and constant grindy battles to get the next line of text of next battle location.
It's not a great game, but if you love SRPGs and feel like playing some The Dark Eye go for it.
I've been playing games based on RNG for longer than most gamers have been alive. I've never, not once, ever experienced a game that fails so many allegedly random rolls as this one. Even the X-Com reboot and it's sequel's infamous failure rates pales when compared to this games 9/10 failures on 78%+ rolls.
Absolutely do not recommend.
While it isn't a bad game, for me it got boring fast.
The story isn't particularly engaging, and you interact with game world through a map most of the time, lacking physical presence outside of combat.
And while the hex-based combat is interesting at first glance, it's too RNG-dependent and becomes tedious after a while.
i like it
I was looking forward to creating a powerful mage in Blackguards, but my experience was marred by some frustrating limitations in character specialization and spell reliability.
1. First, I used Expert Mode for character creation, intending to specialize in specific spells like Fireball. However, the system limits skill points to a maximum of 8 per spell during creation, forcing you to distribute remaining points across other spells or talents, even if you prefer a focused build. This restriction feels counterintuitive and limits customization for players like me, aiming for a highly specialized character.
2. Secondly, despite investing heavily in spells during character creation, i found spellcasting success rates to be disappointingly low. Even with maximum points in Fireball out of character creation, I only had about a 50% chance of successfully casting the spell wasting every other turn during combat. This unpredictability makes magic feel unreliable, especially in the early stages, and dampens the experience at least for me where i was hoping to play as a magic-focused character.
Overall, Blackguards has a lot of potential, but these aspects left me disappointed, especially for a game that offers "Expert Mode" with promises of customization.
Misleading title, all of the guards featured are white.
Blackguards has a extremely punishing combat system. I found the high miss rates frustrating, especially given the game's turn-based nature, which can make battles feel more like a matter of luck than strategy, and really drag on combat for too long, and also overly frustrating, totally detracting from enjoyment.
The story felt it had a strong start but struggled to maintain momentum, leaving me feeling lost or disengaged. While the game’s atmosphere and tactical depth are good, the pacing issues and difficulty spikes prevent it from being a smoother experience for me.
I believe that ultimately Blackguards may appeal to those who love a tough challenge, but it can be a tough sell for players who prefer a more balanced tactical RPG.
If you were to get it - I would highly suggest buying it on special only.
For a game that is 10 years old it is still very playable. Enjoy the RPG style where you can build what you like. If you enjoy making your own choices on your characters abilities, skills, and talents it is one of the best.
This was a great game
I liked it for most parts. And finished all the quests.
It's much better than Divinity original sin due to its tighter and more interactive narrative.
While not without its flaws, it is still a solid game.
6/10
It's ok. But it could be way better.
GOG.. nostalgia...
Delightful characters and fun enough combat. Some of it's obtuse and I still don't understand how the game determines LoS for ranged attacks. Pick it up on sale :)
How does this get a 'mixed' rating. It's excellent. The story. The voice acting. The tactical combat. They don't make them like this anymore. Much prefer the story and characters to Baldur's Gate 3. Although it is pretty linear!
