you can't even buy this game on steam anymore I don't think, and for good reason.
It's cute but the charm lasts all of 2-3 floors of the dungeon once you realise this is pretty much all the game has to off.
It's not even a fun pointless grind like Destiny 2 or Diablo 3
The story, what little there is does add some interesting stuff to the Adventure Time Lore. However it is bundled with a game that is average at best. The further you get, the more the floors start to drag on and on. The loot and leveling systems are garbage.
All of these things could have been overlooked if they did one simple thing. Had online multiplayer, but they couldn't be bothered to do that. So instead you will most likely be slogging through a 4 player game by yourself. I did manage to beat it, but I know most people have a lot lower tolerance level for this kind of stuff then me.
ADVENTURE TIME: EXPLORE THE DUNGEON BECAUSE I DON'T KNOW! - A fairly simplistic, top down, randomly generated dungeon crawler.

Graphics
7
The game uses colorful retro style graphics for it menus, dungeons and sprites. I have to say the graphical style works well, you really get the feeling of a retro arcade game mixed with the colorful world of Adventure Time. Characters and screens are well done and animations are simple but good.
Audio
6
Simple audio and effects, again the retro feel is very evident. Some nice voice acting by the cast of the show, but they feel a little overused.
Gameplay
4
You play through 100 randomly generated dungeons fighting the occasional boss along the way, all the time collecting keys which are used to unlock doors/chests and treasures which can be used to buy training or equipment. The problem is that the levels are very simplistic/repetitive and the game quickly becomes tedious.
Story
3
There isn't really a story, the characters from Adventure Time are all there and there are a few nice moments but overall the clue is in the title - there is no reason to be exploring the dungeons beyond "just because".

Replayability
4
Being randomly generated should give the game a decent amount of replayability but because so many of the levels feel so similar it doesn't seem to count for much. There is a form of character advancement in that you can upgrade your stats and skills and you can buy items from the "choose goose", but considering the gameplay why would you want to keep playing it?

Multiplayer
4
The Multiplayer is LOCAL only (dont expect to be playing with your steam friends), and is decidedly average. It is somewhat reminiscent of gauntlet in that it usually descends quickly into who can collect the most treasure/food before everyone else, except that in this game certain characters have a clear advantage over others in terms of speed / flying over obstacles (A good way to fall out with friends).

Overall
4.5
While this game may appeal to young players and some fans of the show, I find it very hard to recommend it. Once the novelty has worn off there is very little reason to play this game.

In a nutshell
Very basic dungeon crawler
Pros:
Made for 10 year old kids. Local multi player with more controlers. It’ll probably be better on a console that the 10 year old owns.
Cons:
It could have been a flash game on a website it’s so simple.
I started this game before I even Liked Adventure Time, and I thought it was fun. Being older than dirt, I can appreciate its difficulty. Yes, there is a Lot of repetition, and you Will die a Lot and get frustrated, but I still remember Dragon Quest on the NES and how you had to play for hours gaining levels just to survive in an area 3 feet from where you started. So, listen to an audiobook while you play, or have a friend doing commentary, or just listen to a CD if you get bored. This game isn't for everyone, but if you're super old and enjoy a good grind game, this is a good game. ...but yeah, don't pay $40 for it. Wait for a sale.
The title is apt, I don't know why I, or anyone for that matter, would want to 'explore' this dungeon.
Very boring and slow paced, be prepared to walk long distances doing nothing, then hitting a button a few times and then return to walking.
Not worth the money. 5$ buy at best. no online co-op for a 40$ steam game is ridiculous. This is just a money grab.
This game is fun... IF... and only if.. you have the time to play it. It's fun. REAL fun. But it can get a bit difficult after some time. Also.. The candy tax? REALLY? What you earn in each level, once you go back to town, you better figure out how you're going to spend it.. because the princess takes the rest and you have to start all over again. It kind of stinks.
If we are doing this based off of stars.. I will say that its fun, and has a decent story to it, but it can be a bit challenging... 6/10 stars from me. Then again, I have yet to see end game content.
Slow. Can't bankroll your coins. May as well play as Marceline so that you can float over things... Would have been fun for $10. not for the asking of $40.
I wouldnt call this game "amazing". It is entertaining. At times it can be really hard (losing treasures). The plot is quite hillarious and the "special" abilities are a hoot. I am just glad theres some form of Adventure Time on PC. A++ voice acting. Wait for price to go down a little bit. Buy the dlcs. It enhances the game quite a bit and give some variety in play styles. I will recommend this game only when you have at least 2 players. Your teammate can revive you in game. It takes teamwork to be on the same screen. I dont recommend playing solo. It can take a long time and can get frustrating losing items. I enjoy the bits + shaders combos in the graphical output. Play with a controller. "I DON'T KNOW"..... JUST PLAY IT!!
It's a fun enough little game if you liked Gauntlet in the 90s. But this doesn't bring much to the table to recommend it.
If you love Adventure Time, you'll be happy to know that the voicing, writing, and general feel of everything AT-related is spot-on. You'll also be sad to know that it's only tangentally related to ANYTHING, and this is just a pretty average Gauntlet-style dungeon-delve with an Adventure Time lick of paint and far less action.
It's clearly meant to be played co-op, so your mileage might vary, but for the solo adventurer? Give this one a miss. This thing is full of padding. There's little to no variety in the dungeons which are over-large for your movement speed and biomes drawn out too long. It makes use of an RPG-style upgrade system, but with very few increments and they've borrowed that infuriating mechanic from Rogue Legacy where all your currency is reset every time you go to town.
Overall, it's just not very fun.
Preapare for an adventure! An adventure in Boredom... please please avoid this. I didn't know it was possible to make a game that just isnt fun.
25 levels down and i dont think ive seen more than 5 different enemies. I think I have heard the same 45 second music track on loop the whole time. the exact same repeating textures in every dungeon. I have found the same three secondary weapons about 100 times each (including the joke one that does nothing (cool joke devs)).
seriously. this is just not a fun experience. I can't reccomend this. Not even to fans of the franchise. sorry.
I don't really regret buying this game, but doesn't mean I'm not disappointed about it. it is repetitive and kinda boring, but if we can get steam workshop I think we'll have a game with great potential, people can create different types of dungeons, puzzles and hours of new content.
But I do think this game is for children because when I played with my 5 years old brother we had a good time, so probably this is the main reason why a lot of bad reviewers, but as said before, I am disappointed too.
Not mathmatical. I keep buying Adventure Time games because I keep thinking they'll make a good one. How hard can it be? This game is boring, repitious and only features local co-op. It's only redeeming quality is the abusrd amount of voice acting they put into it. This could have been a great game with some online multiplayer and more than eight enimies in the entire game. Seriously overpriced. Avoid!
Repetitious and boring. Pretty much the opposite of the cartoon. This game doesn't really do justice to the original IP.
This game isnt for everyone, if you have friends to play local with i highly recommend it though because this feels more like a party experience. Singleplayer, not that certain.
Stay away from this boring as hell game. This game isn't even close to the hype that was generated for it. All you do is "explore" and (I use that term lightly) 100 floors of a dungeon and every 5th floor you can teleport back up with loot to use to buy upgrades for your character. There is no level up system in the least enemies do not drop EXP they drop money or healing items. Majority of levels you just wander through looking for the exit. There is no incentive to kill enemies because its just easier to slowly trod away. Like I said before every 5th level you can warp back to the begining to talk to various AT characters to buy better stats or get new stuff. The problem is you can't save money after you warp back up. The minute you find out you are like 4 coins away from upgrade and want to grind for a tad more money you get hit with a "dungeon tax" that takes away a majority of your money when you enter the dungeon. The game hypes "randomly generated dungeons!!" but they just change where some holes are and where the exit is. There is very little changes to each floor just a diffferent layout there is nothing truly random about them or surprising.
This game is not even close to a dungeon crawler I really don't know how to describe it other than a rouge like dungeon crawler. When a game makes you sigh when you see how many enemies are on the screen and you just want to run to the nearest exit its defintely doing something wrong. Its like they didn't know if they should make the game a rouge like game or a dungeon crawler so they just combined both genres with little effort and hoped for the best. Do not buy this even if it was on sale trust me its boring, shallow, and not even remotely fun with friends. Oh by the way local multiplayer only no online multiplayer.
TL:DR
Pros:
Grteat voice acting.
40 playable characters.
Cons:
Boring and shallow
Dungeon tax that reminds me of a rouge-like game which this game is not
only can buy better stats via grinding gold by killing enemies.
Enemies do not drop XP only money and healing items.
randomly generated dungeons are very shallow.
Local multiplayer only.
Just avoid this game at all costs. Even the most hardcore AT fan will dislike this snooze fest. If you are really itching for a AT game there are better phone apps and apparently a better hack n slash flash game online for free.
Sadly, WayForward trick us all. This game is extremly booring and have unpardonable poor gameplay. Yes, it is bright and yes it has Adventure Time style and even original voice cast. But except this few things - Explore the Dungeon Because I DON’T KNOW have nothing good at all.
First of all don’t trust multiplayer budges at the game store page. This game have ONLY LOCAL CO-OP, strictly tied to gamepads.
Second as soon as you complete tutorial you will get everything this game can give you. As I said: Explore the Dungeon Because I DON’T KNOW gameplay is extremely poor. This game have 100 levels of dungeon, bunch of heroes and only one way to going through it.
And last one, OMG! Look at this price! Maybe Adventure Time license is expensive, but the right price for this piece of frustration is 2.99$.
Do not get fooled by the title. This game is not worth your attention nor any of your money.
Pros:
WHAT TIME IS IT?
Cons:
No online multiplayer
Local multiplayer works like crap
Game is stupid in terms of game design
Game is too simple
Game is expensive
There are much better games available right now, and you can probably buy all of them for the price of AT:EtDBIDK!
**Just gonna make a quick edit here; it amuses me how many people complain about how this game has no online multiplayer, when it has NEVER been announced that it would have any. It says on Steam, the box of the game, and everywhere online where it was advertised, that is is -local- multiplayer. Why the heck people thought it would be online is beyond me, lol.**
This is coming from someone who practically worships Adventure Time. WayForward's two little games that they made do the series NO justice whatsoever. Hey Ice King was short, easy, and overall just as bad as the game it was a clone of, Zelda II.
Explore The Dungeon is a slow-paced, tedious rouge-lite. The floors are procedurally generated, yet still manage to all feel the same. The game itself is buggy, with enemies and background objects/lights disappearing and re-appearing at random, and some tiles glitching into eachother and giving off a static effect. Enemies and items often like to fall through walls, which can be annoying.
The characters have varying movement speeds, but even as Marceline, who is the fastest, I still feel dreadfully slow. The speed-up token, Speed Shoes, feels absolutely essential simply because without it the game feels like an even longer and slower monotonous grind than it already is.
There are only a handful of enemies, around twelve or so, and then a good four or five pallet swaps of each one. You enter the Nightosphere at one point but there isn't even anything new there; only another layer of palletswaps. They even rehash old boss fights in a lazy-as-heck effort to pad out the game! I know many games do that, but the bosses in this are story-specific events and not just super-versions of certain monsters. Susan Strong and her people have no need being in the Nightosphere; yet there they are, and you need to save them, again. Because reasons.
The only good factor about the game is the voice-acting; the original cast came in and delivered all the glorious voices we've come to love. Yet even that isn't much of a redeeming factor because of how utterly -repetitive- the lines get. I actually have to play with the game muted and my own music or videos playing in the background because the game gets so dang dry, so quickly. I'm not talking about when I grind either; I mean even just making progress through the game, only unmuting it during boss fights so you don't miss out on the actual new dialouge.
That's about it, really. The game is just a buggy, monotonous grind that is absolutely NOT fun at all to play. Even with friends, it's still just doing the same boring crap over and over, laughing awkwardly at the repetitive voice acting, trying to pretend like you're all having a good time. I get that the game is geared towards children, but even then, I can't see a child's simple mind being hooked on this game for very long. Either way, it's a game where you want to know how it ends, so you force yourself to keep playing. Then after that, you drop it and will never pick it up again because you don't want to re-experience that hell for as long as you live.
The only things we have to thank WayForward for here are a waste of time and money. Thanks guys, you made another cruddy game. *Slowclap*. I really wish Pen would stop trusting his beloved series to those goons. Shantae and Mighty Switch Force were OK, but nothing fantastic. Just simple platformers using breasts to sell themselves really. Other than that WayForward have nothing to speak for. I'm sure a small team of dedicated FANS could make a far superior game than Hey Ice King and Explore the Dungeon. Seriously, the bloody IOS games were better than these.
I suppose it could get better but it starts out really weak and slow. It's like a very simplified dungeon crawler and it's just endless randomly generated dungeons. The Combat is weak and the game is unimaginative. I don't know why they can't make a good adventure time game but they haven't yet. Basically this is endless smashing increasingly annoying and difficult enemies while you drill down through dungeons that are mostly empty & boring. I will update if it picks up but so far it's dismal...
