I want to love this game but encountering a couple bugs woven into how challenging the game can be ruined it for me
<3
A short beautifully brutal minimalist platformer.
New layers of each stage's song change the rhythm the landscape alters by as the player reaches checkpoints which are generously spread out through the first 4 levels, which are effectively training for the last 4 where there are no checkpoints and death means restarting the whole level specific world over.
Deaths and restarts are abrupt and quickly allow the player back in without delay.
Gameplay is smooth, precise, and unforgiving.
Highly recommend if you enjoy the game's style.
140 is an artsy, minimalistic trip into something that gradually slides down a relaxing gaming trope, straight towards rhythm platforming hell.
Facts
- Minimalist to the core. You a block. Get to end of level.
- Feels very abstract at first, but that doesn't last long.
- Difficulty gets hardcore.
- Has boss battles.
Pros
- Pick up and play, once you get it the game concept is simple.
- Use musical rhythms to your advantage while platforming.
- The game's concept still works, despite its simplicity.
Cons
- Later levels and bosses are relentlessly hard.
- Unplayable if you have any trouble with reaction time.
[*] Maybe a bit too simple and minimalistic. Can be off-putting.

I'm going to say no. Its hard to recommend this based on my own experience. Because this is a minimalist platformer, all of the elements here are so incredibly stripped down to their base level that it feels like you're playing an Atari 2600 game. That might appeal to some, but it did take away my desire to keep pushing on after a while. In this sort of game you will be dying over and over again and its absolutely necessary to reach some sort of flow state through a clever combination of graphics, music and gameplay, to remain hooked and not give in to the pain. That never happened for me here, even though I have experience with similar games (Almost There, for instance). Then I reached a certain boss battle where the game started messing with the way it's controlled on top of all the rhythmic based challenge, and my brain just couldn't handle it anymore. If yours can and these kind of games appeal to you, then it can't hurt to give it a whirl.
i played this for a course on ludomusicology and it's a fun rhythm platformer. nothing bad to say.
I've only been playing it for half an hour and I can already tell this game is a masterpiece
Short, but worth it, especially on discount. It's challenging but not unfair, but the bosses can be significantly more difficult than the rest of the main game. The visuals and sound design are quite unique and very interesting. Lots of fun.
Abstract rhythm platformer
Steam Deck: Playable
This game would feel right at home in the BIT.TRIP series, as the colorful, rhythm based gameplay is very reminiscent of the venerable series. It's a bit short at 3 levels plus a bonus level, and the third boss can feel a bit unfair, but the gameplay is fun while it lasts.

this game is your game if you love negative reinforcement. if spite fuels you to succeed. if you just got promoted at the locked in factory. you will die in-game about 4 billion times but your victory will be that much sweeter. i love you 140.
Nice
Good fun minimalist platformer
I've decided to put a review on the 500+ games I've played on Steam and never reviewed. this is #1
140 is amazing if you want a musical, short experience. It's often quite cheap with offers, so put it on your wishlist and buy it.
It's one of those indie games you'll finish quite fast but that will leave good memories when you think back on it, just like I'm doing right now. big plus if you have nice speakers or headphones while playing it.

First half of the game is no bad, but in the second half you need to replay a lvl from the start point, without checkpoints on the lvl itself.

not me counting 1 and 2 aloud
levels that don't feel rewarding enough once you complete them, but more disgust that you've finally passed a dreaded level
boss fights are cool, but personally i just did not enjoy this game whatsoever
Game itself is fun and all good but having to start over completely each time is just annoying.
Holy moly. Okay. This game is awesome. It's short, no doubt, but it's not often I come across a game like this that I end up obsessively replaying.
Because the vibe of the game is just that good. I come back to play the levels and the bosses because it just feels so good. The music is amazing. It manages to give such an effect with just shapes and beats and it's amazing.
Play it.
this game is too good to be this cheap. short but hard enough to keep us on our toes.
if you're a sucker for rhythm and minimalistic games like us, YOU HAVE TO PLAY THIS.
An decent simple-if-not-easy rhythm platformer with some very interesting, if frustrating, abstract boss battles. The platform levels have a fair amount of checkpoints, but the bosses use the "bad piano teacher" method* to draw out the gameplay length.
It was still an enjoyable game, so no complaints. The Second Quest, well I think I'm good....
*Bad piano teachers make you go back to the beginning measure every time you make a mistake, so rather than playing through the whole piece (then going through and refining, general to specific like you would do a sketch then taking it to a rendering) you end up learning the first part REALLY well, and when you finally beat the game, you feel more like it was a fluke than that you really learned to master it.
Very solid yet simplistic platformer. Nearly everything goes to the music and it's such a joy to listen to. Big recommend.
