Shrouded in secrecy, an organization of assassins wreak havoc on the local populace. Two assassins Soul and Shang, find a window of opportunity to strike while all their enemies can be found in one place. Their mission is simple: take down all their enemies or die in the attempt. They will face many challenges and discover lost secrets as they embark on a perilous journey against terrible odds.
Take control of Soul and Shang and wield two separate martial arts styles to defeat their foes.
Soul is an orphan born with the temperament of a master. His skills are self-taught and so lack refinement, but his potential is undeniable. He favors Dark Wound, a short bladed weapon given to him by his adoptive father, rumored to be one of the Night Masters..
Shang Zuo is a calm, unflappable fighter of average skill, but who possesses a centered view of all things powerful enough to influence physical objects. This “Sword Temper” skill allows him to destroy objects without moving a muscle and to knock arrows out of the sky with but a single thought. Together they will face the unknown and harness new skills as they face down a terrible conspiracy.

We made a game where the characters can do 999 damage at level 1.
Hahah!
Amazing.
The counters in this game are absurdly easy to do, instantly kill every normal enemy and one character actually teleports to the enemy when you do it. Makes everything not a boss pointless.
Bosses get opened up to combos by counters, but don't take the absurd damage. Ie they're how it should be all the time.
Counters aside the game is... meh.
Very linear maps that go on forever.
Very boring story and characters.
All it can rely on to carry it is combat. You get to play as 2 dudes:
Shin and the other one. I will call them Guy A and Guy B for lack of remembering the second name or which one Shin is.
Guy A is a brute; you just mash buttons, hit half the screen per button press, juggle enemies to death and combo into your big super win attack. His regular dodge is his counter so you constantly ACCIDENTALLY instakill enemies. Play as him and the game is incredibly easy
Guy B is Vergil. From DMC. Or a wannabe Vergil. He summons swords you can use to shoot at enemies or whatever. Feels worse than guy A; his attacks are slower to come out, have massively longer end-lag, hit awkward areas and do less damage. And he has to actually try to counter enemies with a block. And his counter just hits infront of him rather than being a tracking teleport.
But even with guy B the game is insanely easy. The slow moves? Just don't use them. Just juggle enemies with summoned swords repeatedly. Your movesets are very small so you can't do much more.
Combat is the one aspect it could rely on to prop it up and it just falls flat.
Incredibly rigid controls and character animations; you will have to manually setup bindings if want to use a controller. The menu only works with mouse for some reason. Dialog text is incredibly slow in direct contrast with some tutorial text that wont be on screen for one whole second.
Had long wanted to play this game because of the trailer but ended up incredibly disappointed. The image where swords seem to be clashing with an enemy is an animation instead of a mechanic (that I could find). That same character has an in-game attack that pins you without any means to escape and takes like one third of your life in start contrast to what I initially thought this game would provide in terms of attack and defense
This game really scratches my classic feel hack and slash itch. The art style is great, the varying combo system is a nice touch. This game is designed for a specific audience and I feel the mark was hit for an enjoyable experience.
Man, I really, REALLY wanted to like Rain Blood Chronicles.
This game has a lot going for it. The setting is well done, the character movesets are interesting, and the OST kicks major ass. The enemies and bosses are also engaging and fun to beat up. It's a 2D hack n slash with tag mechanics (bless) and the the artstyle helps it pop.
Sadly, the negatives the title has are genuinely concerning. Rain Blood Chronicles is unable to maintain a consistent 60-FPS. In a PC action game, that's a huge no no. Keep in mind I have an i5-6600 and a GTX 1050, so playing Doom 2016 at 70-100 FPS on medium is jarring when Rain Blood drops to the 30s on low settings.
In addition, the UI leaves a lot to be desired. The game does not tell you want the actual buttons are for your controls. You have to manually change/adjust them and it says things like "button 1", "joystick +7". Come on guys, even older indie titles like Super Meat Boy got this right. There are a lot of moves and upgrades to use, but the menu navigation and currency is unclear as to how to get/use them. There are three types of currency, each contributing to different types of upgrades. And you need more than one type to unlock certain moves. Why? Can't I just buy basic upgrades like a new combo, or more health?
The final nail in the coffin was the level design. While the layouts and settings are good, the color palette is boring to look at. Every single level is just grey, and I can't tell most of the them apart after a while. And a while is right, because these levels can last 25-35 minutes. I get I am supposed to get upgrades to replay them later, to improve my playtime and style, but FUCK me this could have been done better. It makes the game drag on, and on, and on, and on. Add the performance issues and weird upgrades, and I just could not get through this game.
It's a shame. Rain Blood Chronicles definitely feels like an ambitious little title for what it's trying to do, and I have no ill will towards the devs and the people who like this. It's just difficult to recommend this, even at 4.99 USD, when titles like Phantom Breaker, ICEY, Dishwasher, and even The Vagrant do the basics right by comparison. Rain Blood Chronicles is a cool little title that just couldn't get above some fundamental design problems.
I consider this game it bit of a hidden gem, I mean, it's one those games that gets buried in over time, you're not even aware it's there and I just happened to stubble onto this game by chance and it has been highly enjoyable with some lovely sprites.
It's your 2D hack and slash game with an upgrading system and something of a DMC like combat style, in the sense that you learn more moves and find ways to use to rack up your combat rating, but instead of getting different weapons you have two unique characters with their own play styles which I like to think of as Soul is more for a casual style and Shang for a more advanced style of play, but it doesn't matter since you swap between them on the fly.
The game might have some minor problems, say like the achievements won't unlock unless you manually install the patch but it's definitely worth giving this game ago.
I liked the game and hated it at the same time, mostly due to missed potential.
Gameplay: The playstyles of the two characters are complementary and the active switch between them makes things interesting. The combos are good, and if you find your rhythm you're in for a treat. Unfortunately, this becomes hard to lack of collisions with the enemies and the inability to turn unless you completely stop attacking. For me this made the game un-enjoyable.
VIsuals: Great aesthetics and artistic direction here, the entire storyboard could be printed and sold as a comic book or be turned into posters. The characters / background / enemies are distinct and the visual effects sit on top of them without the screen feeling clustered, just action-packed :)
Audio: Absolutely great. From emotional to inspiring to combat music they hit it spot on.
Story: I only reached about one fourth of the game, but so far it's been a kid's story for better or for worse - the plot is nothing interesting and you've heard the same story a thousand times just with different heroes / objective. The characters have some personality which makes things better though. And of course, the whole experience becomes like a B-Movie due to the mediocre translation.
Unless you're willing to work past some gameplay inconveniences and bad translation I wouldn't recommend this game. And that's sad because it's missing two things which could have very easily been prevented.
This game is simply amazing. Beautiful art design, blood-pumping soundtrack, deep battle system, replayability. It's like Castlevania + Devil May Cry + Chinese Wuxia films. Definitely worth buying!
Not much else to say aside from: THIS GAME IS GREAT! 10/10. If you like (or love as do I) Castlevania - Symphony of the Night (which there needs to be a PC port for through Steam, in my opinion) then you will be OBSESSED with Rain Blood Chronicles: Mirage. Also, I hope 'Chronicles' in the title means there MAY be more installments of Rain Blood in the future. Happy gaming! Oh, I paid .99c for this game during a weekend sale. Best buck I EVER spent.

Rain Blood Chronicles: Mirage
Quick Review:
(Scroll past this paragraph for a full review.) Rain Blood Chronicles: Mirage is a Chinese developed side-scrolling hack-'n-slash. The story is a bit confusing, the music is nice but not memorable, and the graphics are dark but beautiful. The developers are absent from Steam, so there will likely never be any bug fixes or patches. The fast, skill-based combo system will appeal to fans of the genre, but it's not for casuals or those with very slow reflexes. Rating: 7/10; worth playing.
Full Review:
The story focuses on two warriors, Soul and Shang, who go on a quest to... Who are searching for... Who have to face thousands of...
Yeah, okay... I have no real idea what the story is about. It's partly my fault, I haven't been paying very much attention. But the reason for my inattention is because of the way the story is told. It's not very cohesive; it feels like the developers expected people to already be familiar with the game world and it's characters. For example, random bits of information about different factions within the world are given during load screens, but there's no context. They're all historical facts without reason to care what they mean or why they matter. Whether the story is the way it is because of sloppy writing, bad translation, or the nature of wuxia stories (which I know next to nothing about) I have no idea.
I can tell you that it takes place in a world reminiscent of ancient China, where different factions are warring with each other. Two warriors - Soul and Shang - are on a mission to find their missing master, Jade.
The artstyle in Rain Blood Chronicles is very beautiful, but also quite dark. It's a nice change of pace, since most hack-'n-slash games have bright, colorful graphics, but it can also feel a bit oppressive and gloomy. The music isn't anything special, but it fits well with both the shadowy environments and fast paced action. Voice acting during cut scenes is in Chinese, while the text is (sometimes badly translated) English.
Combat-wise, the game is like a side-scrolling Devil May Cry, which is a very awesome thing. The combos are fast, easy to learn but hard to master, and as stylish as anything Dante can pull off. On the fly switching between two characters is a nice addition to the game: Each fighter has a very different play-style, insuring that cutting down hordes of enemies will never get stale. Characters don't share experience points, which are required to level up combos, but it's actually well balanced. The game is meant to be played using both Soul and Shang - two warriors fighting as one.
Soul is the faster, easier to play character: He excels at dodging attacks and countering from behind, luring and assassinating. He has a few defensive moves as well, in the unlikely event that he gets cornered. Shang, while more technical and difficult to play, is also more fun once you get the hang of him. He's able to create energy swords which can unleash a barrage of attacks on enemies. While it's possible to beat the game using a single character, it's not recommended. You'll miss out on the badass feeling you get when you teleport behind a enemy as Soul, switch to Shang, and trigger a devastating multi-hit combo.
The combat and rewards system is all skill based: The better you fight, the faster you'll earn points for new combos and accessories. It encourages you to keep improving your skills, keep trying new tactics and styles, keep playing. The down side to the skill based rewards is if you struggle to trigger combos and get high ranks, earning points for upgrades and money for items will be a slow and grindy process. I admittedly suck at combo-based games - I've never had the reflexes to be great at them - but I honestly wouldn't have the rewards system any other way. I can see how it might frustrate some people, but I get tired of being heavily rewarded for doing very little in games. I want to be challenged to do better. The game doesn't completely lack hand-holding: There are 4 difficulty levels, the easiest of which is nearly impossible to die in, unless you stand still and let the baddies slowly kill you. This setting is great for newcomers to hone their skills, almost like a practice mode. The hardest difficulty will kill you. A lot. But you'll like it.
The game doesn't have co-op in the main campaign, which is a shame since this would be a blast to play with a friend. But finishing the story unlocks a boss rush mode and "bloody palace" type mode, both of which can be played co-op. The developers are not active on Steam, so future updates and patches are highly unlikely. This too is unfortunate: With a little more polish and care, this game could be truly great.
I picked up Blood Rain Chronicles for 99 cents when it was on sale (it's back up to $9.99 now). While it's not my favorite game ever, it is the best single dollar I've ever spent on a Steam game. I wouldn't say it's for everyone, but if a fast paced, skill based hack-'n-slash sounds like something you'd enjoy, I highly recommend it.
Now if only someone would develop a side-scrolling Onimusha...
Developed by a group of chinese developers. This is one of those very much underrated game out there. Maybe coz it is developed by a relatively unknown company that not much people is playing it. But it is definitely one of the best hack n slash game. You can use two different characters with totally two different skill sets. Certain boss are best defeated by one of the characters and you are allowed to switch to the one during in game fighting. Definitely highly recommended. A pity developers bail out from creating part 2 due to lack of sales ... Great game.
For $10 i'm so glad I picked this game up. This game is an awesome hack and slash especially if you're into chineese fiction.
Story is actually somewhat interesting. You play 2 different characters, both have pretty distinct movesets as well as unlockable skills.
The combat itself most people will probably think it's just "okay". But after learning the characters you can do some neat combos and tricks.
The enemies aren't too difficult really, (at least on normal difficulty) but they do throw quite a bit of mini bosses into the levels that keep it interesting.
The boss fights are definetly where most of the game shines, they all are pretty unique and have different layouts from what I can tell.
A couple typos in the dialogue, but it's easy to figure out what the characters are saying. The voices are actually in chineese which is very cool in my opinion.
Also the achievments seemed to be bugged unfortunately :(
Need to play it for yourself! Check it out!
The game, while it may lack some polish, is fluid and the combat is fun.
The translation is not very good, but I can look over it because the setting is different from what you normally see.
If you are interested in hack and slash games, this does a superb job in scratching that itch. I would not reccomend playing the game without a controller, however.
Engrish translation? Check.
Pretty nice soundtrack? Check.
Fancy slashing combo system with diversity of two characters? Check.
If you want a game with fun combat and unnecessarily hard platforming, this might be a game for you.

+ Solid combo based combat
+ Beautiful visual design
+ Epic boss battles
+ Great soundtrack
+ Fun dialogue
- Technical issues
- Boring level design
Solid beatemup game. The very beginning is misleading with the seemingly low quality because the game is actually very well put together. Decently challenging, but heavily rewards skillful play. Missions are longer than they should be for the DMC-style ability unlock system, and achievements don't seem to be working correctly, but I fully recommend this super cool chinese game of killing mans.

Seems like a console sequel is in the work and it'll be in 3D, according to a recent interview (Chinese) - https://mp.weixin.qq.com/s/DbGjwjkT2GmeOx2y0pGx1g

A solid 2D hack'n slash game. It's basically Devil May Cry in 2D. BUT! The game is abandoned, leaving bugs unfixed. The developer went on to work on their next game. Talk about irresponsible.
It is still worth to get when on sale however.
Should be fixed;
- Random frame/sound lag spikes and slow down.
- Game Crashes 3 times during my first play through
- Occasionally both my character or enemies cannot be seen.
- Inconsistent sound effect. Some sound clips are not recorded well. I can hear sound crackling. Also, there is one enemy that is way louder than the rest when killed, not sure if it's "Pyre Alchemist" or "Enhanced Machinist".
- Voice setting only affects cutscenes, not during gameplay.
Rests annoying things;
- Bad Translation. Story is hard to follow due to translation, and some dialogues are insanely fast.
- Chinese sounds like it is dubbed in the 80s.
- Only partial cutscenes can be skipped. Annoying after 1st play through.
- The ending. I understand the game want to end on a cliffhanger, but it feels sudden. Also, after the final stage, there is a very long black screen before the credit start rolling. I thought the game crashed.
- Foreground and boss health bar (when 2 bosses appear at the same time) block the action on occasion.
- Achievement patch needs to be installed manually.
For fans of Devil May Cry and Ninja Gaiden, this is an absolute treat. The combat is fast paced and wicked. Plenty of things to do after the main campaign, like harder difficulties, boss rush, and tower modes. This game's a blast!
Interesting game, and something different from the usual indie offerings. The controls can be a little awkward at first, but they aren't too bad (and fortunatly you can customize them). I find a game controler works better than a keyboard for this game. Gameplay wise, this is more or less a side scrolling beat'em up brawler.
Basically it's a side-scrolling Devil May Cry. It features 2 characters with 2 distinct combat styles (think of Dante and Vergil; in fact, Shang could be Vergil’s distant cousin from China — his Kee swords bear great resemblance to Summoned Swords), style-based combat system, and great visuals. Sadly, translation is atrocious, there are many typos and in some instances English text doesn't even remotely correspond to Chinese audio. Also, story is somewhat basic and clichéd. But the gameplay is great, combat is satisfying, so if you're a fan of hack and slash games (like me), Mirage is a must have. If you're not, well, at least give it a try.
P.S. Oh, and don't be fooled by “Local co-op” label on Steam — Mirage has only “Duel” mode available from the start. In order to unlock “Boss Rush” and “Tower” (Bloody Palace) modes you have to finish the story first. There's no co-op for story mode…
