Game crashed, save disappeared, lost all progress.
The game has a fantastic game play, hidden gems, character leveling, bashing, bashing, and more bashing - I will buy v2 soon. :-)
Devs killed the multiplayer AGAIN because they want to push copies of their remake. im not gonna pay $20 for the remake of a game i already own because the devs keep breaking the online while staying radio silent. scum devs, i wish i could refund all the games i bought from them. i bought all hammerwatch games as well as some DLC only for them to fuck me over. fuck you. i will never pay for another of their games, i will pirate them and i will go out of my way to seed torrents for all their previous games to aid others in pirating their games instead of giving them money, thats how much you pissed me off.
Edit: im currently seeding 50 different torrents relating to hammerwatch and its sequels. i will continue seeding until multiplayer works again, thank you.
It plays like an old arcade game, to me. And that to me makes it even better.
The Boys and I just purchased this game for $2 because we were all supposed to get together last night but one was feeling a little sick plus the weather was bad. So we compromised on buying this game and playing together online.
It's very simple and we only played for 1.8 hours at this point, but we had a lot of fun dinking around with different characters, exploring the levels, and just noodling and having fun.
It comes off as a basic build in today's world (though fairly complicated for a 2013 game), but it's actually pretty complex. We got all the way to the first main boss where we got DOMINATED. We look forward to our next play session and seeing where this goes. IF we continue to enjoy the game, we might end up playing our way down the full lineup of games.
Final judgment: For $2, check this out. Make sure you have friends to play with as I feel this is very difficult solo. You will easily get your money's worth and then some.
This game holds a special place in my heart.
Amazing modern version of gauntlet, love the pixel art and crt filters
Okay, let's gather our heroes and delve into a review of the hack-and-slash dungeon crawler, Hammerwatch!
**The Long Play:**
**Hammerwatch: A Frantic and Fun Retro-Inspired Dungeon Crawler** ⚔️
Developed by Crackshell, Hammerwatch is a pixel-art, hack-and-slash dungeon crawler that draws inspiration from classic arcade games like Gauntlet. It's a fast-paced, action-packed adventure that can be enjoyed solo or with up to three friends in co-op, either locally or online.
**Simple Yet Satisfying Gameplay:**
Hammerwatch's gameplay is simple to pick up but difficult to master. You choose from one of several different character classes, each with their own unique abilities and playstyles, and then delve into a series of procedurally generated dungeons, hacking and slashing your way through hordes of enemies, collecting gold, and searching for the exit. The controls are tight and responsive, and the combat is fast and fluid.
**Co-op Chaos and Mayhem:**
While Hammerwatch can be enjoyed solo, it truly shines in co-op. Playing with friends adds a layer of chaotic fun to the experience as you work together to overcome the challenges of the dungeons, revive fallen comrades, and compete for the highest score. The game supports both local and online co-op, making it easy to team up with friends near or far.
**A Wealth of Content and Replayability:**
Hammerwatch offers a surprising amount of content for its relatively low price. The game features multiple campaigns, each with its own unique environments, enemies, and bosses. The procedurally generated dungeons ensure that no two playthroughs are exactly the same, adding to the game's replayability. You can also customize the difficulty with various modifiers, adding even more challenge for those who seek it.
**A Few Cracks in the Foundation:**
While Hammerwatch is a fun and engaging experience, it does have a few drawbacks. The pixel-art style, while charming, might not appeal to everyone. The game can also become quite repetitive after a while, especially in solo play. The difficulty can also be quite punishing, especially in the later levels.
**Pros:**
* Fast-paced, action-packed hack-and-slash gameplay ⚔️
* Fun and chaotic co-op for up to four players 👨👩👧👦
* Multiple character classes with unique abilities 🧙🧝🥷
* Procedurally generated dungeons for high replayability 🔄
* Customizable difficulty with various modifiers 😀
**Cons:**
* Pixel-art style might not appeal to everyone 👾
* Can become repetitive, especially in solo play 🔁
* Difficulty can be quite punishing at times 💀
**Overall: 7.5/10** - Hammerwatch is a fun and engaging hack-and-slash dungeon crawler that's best enjoyed with friends. Its simple yet satisfying gameplay, procedurally generated dungeons, and customizable difficulty make it a worthwhile experience for fans of the genre. While it can be repetitive at times and the difficulty might be a turn-off for some, its charming retro aesthetic and chaotic co-op fun make it worth checking out.

**The Short Play:**
Hammerwatch: Fun, retro hack-and-slash, best with friends! Best: Co-op chaos, fast-paced action. ⚔️👨👩👧👦 Worst: Can be repetitive. 🔁 **7.5/10**
You can play solo but it's definitely not meant to be. Incredibly repetitive having to fight through the same level and groups of enemies every time a new run starts.
To put simply. For me the game was repetitive and easy. It felt like a slog walking around each floor killing one of maybe 5 variety of enemies. Nothing felt meaningful, or interesting. With the floors/levels being hand crafted, it does allow for some secrets to be created and interest. But honestly, after your first time, possibly even half way through it just felt super long to get anywhere, especially if you missed something.
When you look at the achievements, only 1/3 people bothered to play enough to kill the first boss, half of players killed enough enemies to even get close to the first boss.
I also played in Coop which was a little bit more fun, at least clearing the floors was faster which stayed off the boredom and repetitiveness of each level. It ran fine, with no issues or lag. Which was a great positive.
Pros
Graphics and music
Cons
Pretty much everything else, gameplay is way too repetitive, not a big fan of the controls, I could see this game being more fun coop, but probably still wouldnt add enough enjoyment to play through
A decent game, but with some pretty frustrating flaws.
Permadeath is super annoying in a co-op. Losing all your progress and then playing through the exact same dungeon again is super demotivating. We tried playing with infinite lives, but then it trivialized the game -- there was no penalty at all for death.
Also, the fact that every player controls every menu simultaneously led to a let of misclicks. My partner opened a vendor while I was attacking things, and my button press bought something for them. Worse, later they paused the game while I was attacking things, and my button press quit the game. There wasn't even an "are you sure?" dialog, it just immediately quit and we lost everything. This tipped it into thumbs down for me.
The pixel art is great, and while the gameplay can get repetitive, it’s amazing in coop. The ending is especially interesting the first time you play.
Absolutely amazing dungeon crawler for co-op.
Unforgiving one-life styled (you do get extra lives but they are limited and depends on whether you'll actually get them) yet approachable dungeon that's really great when played from start to finish at one go (there are checkpoints that serve as saves too) with addictive gameplay loop with really high replayability and masterable mechanics.
Most of the game achievements are doable, there are just two really grindy ones though. Hunters beware.
As of co-op, over the years managed to play it with a few different people from different backgrounds and they all told me afterwards that they enjoyed the game, so if you need a quick party game, look no further, just plug some controllers and enjoy!
As of the length... I believe you'll do under just fine to beat both campaigns once.
it´s a really fun game
The coop is not working, We tried all the fixes from steam even hamachi.
From what I've heard the dev is a scumbag that abandons games.
A nice little throw-back to the old dos games this is clearly inspired from however, the local-coop shared camera is very poorly done, actual split-screen would have been awesome and I stopped playing it for that reason and that's why I can't recommend it.
Good game
So much fun to play with friends as you can see how different classes in a party perform and they can help you pick up coins which is very tedious to do on your own.
I kicked ass, I died, I killed some things, didn't escape the castle, and died again. I kicked ass though, good ass game.
2/10
Garbage gameplay.
9/10
Buen juego, un poco largo para mi gusto (debido a que me tomo mucho tiempo buscando cosas o secretos)
Recomendado para los que les gusten los juegos de calabozos.
very much lil pog
The best Coop Dungeon Crawler
The core concept is rather good, but there are some heavy pacing issues, like way too much forced downtime while mana recharges, and so on. Overall I didn't find it very fun, I expected power ups would make things better, but not that much overall.
Great game. Simple, with no complicated mechanics. Good music. The atmosphere is great.
It has a good amount of puzzles and secrets. Not too long which is great.
It shows love in the making, this game deserves way more positive reviews.
Great game!
Hurts me to give this a negative review, had so much fun on this, but came back to play it today and couldn't play it on multiplayer, and when I tried using Remote Play Together to circumvent the issue I couldn't move with my controller, so the game is actually unplayable.
Very good
