A short and good story but mediocre detective gameplay.

+ The story and mystery are quite engaging. I literally finished it in one sitting, and it was quite good — the twist is solid too.
+ Interesting concept: playing as a ghost and solving your own murder by possessing people, using poltergeist abilities, reading minds, etc.
+ The gameplay is easy and short, even the detective parts — so for achievement hunters, it’s an easy 100%.
+ The world design and art style blend well to create a supernatural and mysterious atmosphere.

- The dialogue is... ugh. Really on the nose — no subtlety at all.
- The stealth sections are so repetitive and just frustrating. There’s no freedom or creativity the way stealth gameplay usually do.
- While the concept is good, the investigation feels shallow. It lacks the depth that would let you roleplay as a detective — everything is predetermined by the story.

OutStanding Game
Murdered: Soul Suspect is what happens when you mix a detective story with a ghost simulator and somehow make being dead the least exciting part of the whole experience.
You play as Ronan O'Connor, a detective who gets murdered right at the start (talk about speedrunning life) and comes back as a ghost stuck in Salem. Your unfinished business? Solve your own murder while looking cooler than you have any right to with your ghostly fedora and bullet-riddled trench coat.
The concept is honestly awesome. You're a ghost who can possess people, read minds, walk through walls, and mess with electronics like the world's saddest poltergeist. It sounds like it should be a playground of supernatural fun. And sometimes it is — sneaking around, piecing together clues, and uncovering dark secrets in a cursed town is genuinely atmospheric and surprisingly cozy, in a haunted kind of way.
But the gameplay itself is a little too laid-back. Investigations mostly involve walking around looking for sparkly stuff on the floor and piecing together clues like you're doing ghostly homework. The stealth sections, where you dodge angry demon things, are about as thrilling as sneaking past your grandma when you’re grounded. They’re not bad, they’re just... polite.
The story is where the game carries itself. It’s a weird, moody, slightly cheesy ghost detective story, and it really leans into the supernatural soap opera vibes. Ronan himself is actually a great character: a rough-around-the-edges cop who's just trying to make peace with all the bad decisions he made while alive. Honestly, you kinda want him to get his ghostly happy ending, even if the plot occasionally trips over its own trench coat.
Visually, the game does a solid job setting the tone—foggy streets, haunted houses, creepy cemeteries—it all fits. You definitely feel like you're trapped between worlds, and sometimes you’ll just stop and admire how uncomfortably peaceful everything looks.
In the end, Murdered: Soul Suspect is like a low-stakes ghost tour: not the scariest, not the deepest, but it's got a weird charm that’s hard to hate. It’s short, simple, and perfect if you ever wanted to be a detective but also, you know, a dead guy.
9/10 unfinished business forms. Would possess random pedestrians and eavesdrop on awkward conversations again.
I would only recommend this game if it is heavily discounted.
The story and main investigation are interesting, but they take too long to get started and end quickly once you are really into it. It took me about seven hours to complete the main story.
This is more of a narrative game to be honest. The gameplay is pretty much non-existent and very repetitive, especially when it comes to collecting clues and solving side investigations.
For a game that's over ten years old, the graphics are more than decent, as are the cutscenes and voice acting.
It's still a good game if you want to spend a cosy evening solving the investigation of your own murder.
Muito boa a história. Quanto a jogabilidade, praticamente um jogo para assistir, não tem muito o que fazer/decidir, basicamente não tem inimigos para sair na mão, apenas assista o jogo. Numa promoção, vale a pena comprar, no preço cheio, melhor assistir no youtube.
OLD BUT GOLD
I liked the game, although short It managed to hold my full attention for the eight hours of playtime.
sometimes the puzzles are too easy but its a great story driven game :)
Good Game
The story of this game isn't very long but its interesting. There's a few bugs in the game the priest walking through the wall, your character moving on their own or demons every once in a while seeing you from places they shouldn't. I was able to fix most of the bugs by reloading the game or turning on vsync so not too big a deal. There is a lot of collectables to get if that interest you. One of my favourite parts of this game was how you got to use being a ghost, walking through things, teleporting and turning on certain objects. It was unique way of doing a detective game. I only wish there was not ghost memory buildings and stuff in my way blocking me from being able to fully explore in a ghostly way, I understand why it was done but it was very annoying in the town area to wander around trying to find away past it all.
YOOOOOOOOOOO THE PLOT TWIST
I wanted to love this game so much. I was very excited to try it out and the story sounds interesting. However, the game was so buggy that I couldn't even make it past the initial scenes. I restarted twice hoping it would clear but it kept having issues.
I played this over a decade ago as a rental and i still enjoy it as much as i do now.
Is it simple? Absolutely, and yet i can't help but enjoy that it still lets the player solve it as they go.
My favorite part however is the incredible visual style, the lighting accompanying it improves that ten fold. Absolutely gorgeous greens and blues.
Another thing is the ghosts take their cause of death to their appearance, take Ronin our protagonist for example he has glowing bullet holes in his chest and back which i personally think really adds to the games visual style.
Regardless if you enjoy detective games or not i still reccomend you give it a go simply for the setting and visual style!
SOTTOVALUTATISSIMO, ti tiene attaccato alla storia come pochi videogiochi. COMPRATELO
Really fun game, interesting concept, definitely a fun game to play during the Fall when its Halloween season or whenever your bored.
Murdered Soul Suspect:Story is very good and captivating, Game-play is alright, Pacing of the game is Okay but ending is a bit anticlimactic.
Overall Great story game that can be completed in a day unless trying to get every collectable.
(Hope they make more games of this genre/type)
I've been playing games since '78, and found this to be very refreshing. I played it a bit back on the 360, and picked it up here for $2.
The game ran fine, and I had no issues except that you have to turn V-sync off to get over 30fps.
The story was really interesting to me. Some of it was predictable, but I was still surprised at the end. Picking up the collectibles really fleshes it out. There's quite a bit of them, but it's not Ubisoft level,
The side missions were enjoyable, but I really liked the ghost story collectibles. I though they were well thought out. The voice acting was sold too.
There's no combat, just stealth. It's not that hard as long as you're very patient. If you get seen, it may be frustrating to get away, but there's not too much of it.
I took waaaay too long to finish this, but I was enjoying looking for things. For the price I paid...it can't be beat. I would've loved to see games like this, but the studio closed right after releasing this.
Wow! The idea of story line is so original. Atmosphere of this game will get you involved in process easily.
Story is better than anticipated but the end seems rushed and game mechanics are outdated and unresponsive, especially the banishing demons prompt.
it's got a unique idea
great story and fun to play
Small indie company (Square Enix) can't afford to spend 5 minutes to activate Cloud Save feature. Yeah, it's literally a couple of clicks...
Bought this game to play on my Steam Deck, but decided to continue on PC and no saves. So, 2025 year, it's crazy to see some games without cloud saves.
Anyway, I would finish a game, so will update my review later.
For now HUGE DISRESPECT TO SQUARE ENIX for laziness
a bit boring, mediocre... could have been something more...
Murdered: Soul Suspect is a unique and captivating blend of mystery, supernatural elements, and detective work. Set in the hauntingly atmospheric town of Salem, you play as Ronan O'Connor, a detective who is murdered and must solve his own death from the afterlife. The game’s intriguing premise and story kept me hooked, and the way it explores Ronan’s quest for redemption adds depth to the narrative.
The gameplay offers a mix of puzzle-solving, investigating crime scenes, and using ghostly abilities to interact with the world and uncover clues. While the mechanics may seem a bit simple, the story and setting more than make up for it. The environment is beautifully crafted, and the eerie tone is consistently maintained, which adds to the immersion.
For anyone who loves mystery and detective stories, Murdered: Soul Suspect is a hidden gem worth checking out. Completing all the achievements is a great way to extend the experience, as they encourage exploring every corner of Salem and uncovering all its secrets.
If you’ve already enjoyed the game in one sitting, I definitely recommend going for the achievements to get the most out of this atmospheric tale and test your detective skills a bit further!
If you want a 10 hour or so narrative game with collectibles to unlock side stories, Murdered: Soul Suspect will do that for you. I don't think the narrative is perfect, when I finished the game it just.. kind of happened but for a game that goes on sale regularly for $2, yeah it's a reasonable pick up.
To call out though, this port is weirdly locked to 30 FPS as long as Vsync is on in the game settings, and turning Vsync off means no frame cap. To get around it, you'll want to set Vsync on in your graphics control panel and set a reasonable max frame rate and disable Vsync in game.
soul good
A fun, interesting detective game with a unique twist. Good story, too.
Combat was absolutely terrible, though, but luckily there's not that many combat sections in the story.
If I'm being honest though, I miss these types of games. The simple "AA" games, that were less than 10 hours long, had proper art direction and optimization, and still felt gripping.
Anyway, I would recommend you give this one a shot.
the story is great, took me hours to finish. absolute cinema.
- developed brain damage from collecting artifacts
- big map, nice for a night walk while inhaling demon's smell
- engaging story line, predictable with a little twist at the end
- bye abigail, stay and rot in hell
- joy does give you joy
Okay. The only thing that could save this game is the story and they messed it up.
SPOILER ALERT!
I expect some real killer instead of ghost-thing who possessed random people to kill. But okay let's play with your rule. If I'm a detective, as Ronan I'd prefer possessed some officer or even Rex/Baxter instead of wandering around with Joy in 'ghost mode' lol but you choose to 'force us' to solve the case in ghost mode which is unnecessary.
So, yeah, glad to buy this game with discount price.
The ending is superbbb!! Everything in this game makes SENSE
Its a 10 hour ghost mystery show. Buy it on sale and enjoy it for what it is.
Great game, I really liked story
There were few bugs, controls are not perfect, but overall it is worth.
Biggest negative is that you can't backtrack after you finish the game. It warned me before entering final phase, but at that point, I finished my one quest that i didn't and on the way there, found and finished another one. I couldn't wait to see finale, so I did it, before completing game. (If i knew before, I would try harder to finish side quests as I go)
Overall, I really liked it, and would recommend.
This game is a must-play for fans of mystery, suspense, and paranormal stories. Its clever mix of gameplay mechanics and an engaging narrative provides a truly unique experience that keeps you hooked from start to finish. If you’re looking for a game that offers a compelling story with creative gameplay, this one is definitely worth checking out.
The story seems interesting but the game suffers from crashes.
The story is good so far and I enjoy the concept. Game play is decent with pretty simple puzzles to solve. I really like the style and have found it quite enjoyable.
the perfect murder mystery game with the perfect gameplay.
An excellent underrated gem. It’s a narrative adventure about solving your own murder as a ghost. I really enjoyed the exploration and how lived in the town felt due to the conversations, collectibles, and little environment details.
if your into mystery and detective story based games than you like this game
Game is really buggy, story is pretty bad, and the demon sections are more annoying than anything. The 'final showdown' was bugged so bad I had to repeat it several times before the first time I wasn't instantly killed because the character walked forward into a demon hole for no reason. I purchased this game many years ago and never got around to it until now. Now I wish I played it back in the day so I could have refunded.
Think about all the possibilities of a Ghost Detective. Interesting right? Not so much really. As you play the fisrts hours of the game you must realize that's all you gonna do for the rest of the game. The investigation part of the game doesn't like you thinking interesting ways or explications for the cases, the most obvious thing and obtuse is the right answer. The "combat" is repetitive and limited about what you can do to defend yourself, is boring. Exploration is interesting as you uncover the different stories of the city, I liked this part a little. main story is entertaining but kinda meh.
If ur into crime solving type things with a bit of horror to it then this is da game. It was interesting story and game play.
Seems like a great game with an interesting twist, using skills as a ghost is cool. I love the detective aspects of the game but then there's map puzzles to get past entities (baddies) to be able to get on with the investigation, which makes it far to scary and complicated for me LOL - I'm out - but thumbs up to a cool game!
WAIT --- Theres a simple hack to get around the demons in the Steam Guides! Totally awesome community :D
One of the best games ever. 5/5
I don't even remember buying this game, it must've sat in my Steam library for years. I picked it up on a whim and was immediately pulled in - I LOVED IT! I'm surprised at how well it holds up in the decade+ since the game's release, and other than a couple of minor bugs and issues here and there, I had a pretty perfect playthrough. There are clues to find, collectibles to search for, creepy locations to visit (the whole game takes place in Salem, MA), and an overall creepy, noir detective vibe that I loved.
An excellent detective walking sim
This game is amazing. I have had this sitting in my pile of shame for years and finally got around to playing it.
This is one of the best written games I have played in recent memory and its environment, pacing, and characters make a really compelling story that ropes you in pretty immediately. I wish more games of the same genre (i.e. Sherlock Holmes, Sinking City, Visage, etc.) had the same smooth story-flow as this.
It is also amazing how good this looks and how well it runs considering its age. I am running an eyefinity 7680x1440 resolution with everything maxxed and still getting over 100fps on a mid-range GPU.
Get this game if you like investigation-type games. It is sooo good.
Story was very interesting, and the ending is definitely not something I saw coming. This game has many collectables, which for someone like me who loves finding things in games in great. The ghost stories you find are very interesting, and overall I found the concept and game worth it. Wish it was a little bit longer, as I have completed the game with all achievements and collectables and it took 11hrs (probably could have been done much more quickly).
Others have said there are bugs, but I didn't really experience anything major.
I've attempted to play this game twice now and each time I am bored out of my mind.
The game clearly wants players to guess the right answers using minor details but the questions the game asks are vague and the clues are unintuitive. It also punishes players from choosing incorrectly by removing "badges", your means of character progression, for every wrong choice.
You are ghost. You are detective. You are now part of the occult, and you don't know who murdered you, other spirits want your energy. What else do you need?
