Max Payne is the classic action thriller title developed by Remedy Entertainment. Set in New York City, Max Payne follows a path of revenge against the people who murdered his family, and while this title does show it age. Max Payne ultimately delivers a fantastic 3rd person shooting experience, and a dark story that has a neo-noir cop style. These elements make Max Payne a great pickup for any 3rd person action fan.
Starting with the gameplay in Max Payne. The shooting experience as stated before, is great. It isn't pinpoint accurate like modern titles, but makes up for it with a bullet time mechanic and a roll/dive. Levels are interactive with objects to open, secrets to find, and a moderate amount of variety. Standouts include an industrial facility with a secret, and a manner with healthy amount of verticality. However even on the base difficulty Max takes a ton of damage, and seems to come from nowhere and everywhere. I feel like this does emphasize the bullet time mechanics and always being mobile, but becomes frustrating in close quarters and ambushes. This caused a lot of quicksaving, and many checkpoint resets in certain sections. But to be clear the game is not super difficult, its just frustrating at points. Speaking of frustrating, the dream sequences were also a major point of frustration when playing as well. But to say exactly why would contain spoilers.
When it comes to the story, Max Payne has a dark story with typical noir cop tropes. But somehow plays this off with a charm that even if dark puts a nice twist that makes Max Payne unique. To not spoil these elements I won't be specific, but Max Payne as the protagonist has an arc that reinforces the gameplay.
Overall I really did enjoy Max Payne, and honestly liked this title way more than I thought I would. When playing on PC with modern hardware, I'd recommend checking the community guides for fixes before playing. I had audio issues with cutscenes before installing a fan made fix. After that the game was flawless 0 bug 0 crashes. To me Max Payne gets a rock solid 8/10 (fantastic)

SEARCH FOR THE MOD THAT MAKES THIS GAME PLAYABLE ON CURRENT GEN PC
Game was a trip!
still fun to this day and makes the Alan Wake/Control universe more connected. BULLET TIME! Face Scan 007 enemies, and a bunch of guns youll swap between makes this game a solid 8/10
Super Linear but at times i found the progression to be obscured by something like a wooden wedge holding a semi in park. Best tip is IF YOURE STUCK LOOK AROUND AND SHOOT youll find a way aht
Really fun game! Make sure to get the mods to make it run on modern machines!
As long as you're willing to spend a couple minutes getting an installer set-up to patch the game for modern hardware, Max Payne is a masterpiece worth trying out.
Good shooting, great innovation via the bullet-time mode and use of dodging, good level design, respectable selection of weapons (more than 14 split into 6 categories), solid length of the main game (~8 hours) and the inclusion of challenge modes make this a great package and quite a steal given its cheap prices and frequent sales.
The iconic soundtrack, great narrative and sense of progression, both gameplay and story-wise, as well as the outstanding voice-acting, comedic moments from both visual gags and dialogue, innovative use of comic art-style cinematics and good use of boss enemies (they are still leaning on the bullet-sponge side but it's far from feeling like a chore, in fact I felt the level of difficulty they provided was well-done), are but cherries on top of the package this classic provides.
Outside of the above-mentioned need for patches, I must say the game had some drops in performance in the last tenth or so, with outdoor areas suffering from lag (noticeable via extremely fast turn rates), however I found it manageable.
I did not experience crashes, audio stuttering or missing textures and overall the game did feel very polished which is a massive plus in my book for older titles.
I wholly recommend giving it a try. 10/10
Max Payne. The Man, The Myth, The Legend! Great game still holds up. Some audio issues that you can fix with some mods but still fun!
Astaroth, Beelzebub, Asmodeus, Baphomet, Lucifer, Loki, Satan, Cthulhu, Lilith, Hela! BLOOD TO YOU ALL!!! I'm am a wolf yea I AM A WOLF!!!
Jack Lupino was crazy alright.
The game is fun, just make sure to use the "Max Payne 1, Complete FixPack - 2023 Edition" guide and cap your fps to 60 to avoid any bugs.
The game itself is great but this Steam version does literally NOT FUNCTION without a mod and some code tweaking and should absolutely not be sold in this condition.
fun, great, terrific. Just a few words that describe max payne
Just beat the game and I really enjoyed it :] I was a big fan of the whole noir style and the game and story itself was just fun to go through. I bought the collection, so now I plan on playing the second game. I would 100% recommend this game, still holds up to this day.
Golden classics. A little bit buggy, but still interesting to play
On one hand, this has aged horribly and I imagine playing this for the first time now will feel incredibly gruelling. It's also hard, and often unfairly so. On the other, I still have a lot of love for this super grim tribute to both noire and John Woo. Wacky script and cool music, and also pew pew pew
max payne is full of payne
i am also full of payne as another half of my playtime was spent on getting this to work properly
gud game
Broken audio and resolution
There's a mod to fix it but that's besides the point.
Rockstar apparently can't afford to fix their older games.
But they can afford to take the best PC versions of GTA III, Vice City and San Andreas off the Steam store.
Finally a game that encapsulates the inner male desire to go postal with nothing but painkillers against the Mafia, Russians, Mercs and Drug Corpos
Disappointingly old port that inst fit for modern hardware, needs a patch or a new release entirely.
The dive mechanics and physics are not working as intended, unable to dive through any windows as max instantly plummets to the ground.
Fixes online mention capping FPS, i capped at 60 which was disappointing in itself and it did not resolve the issue for me, diving was still broken.
Still great, after all these years.
(The pack by darkje fixed all the issues I had, you can find it in Guides)
“Max Payne is like opening a time capsule filled with 2001’s finest video game magic, and trust me, the nostalgia hits hard. This is the game that gave us bullet time—back when diving in slow motion with dual pistols made you feel like you were starring in your own action movie. And man, did it feel good.
The story is a gritty noir fever dream, following Max as he goes from hard-boiled cop to revenge-fueled vigilante, all while narrating his life like he’s auditioning for the darkest poetry slam ever. The writing is peak early 2000s: dark, edgy, and so dramatic it makes every scene feel like it was pulled straight from a graphic novel (which, of course, it practically is). The twisted plot is full of conspiracy theories, shady drug rings, and more plot twists than your favorite crime thriller.
And who could forget the haunting, unforgettable soundtrack? Those melancholic piano notes still send shivers down my spine, even years later. Max Payne was the definition of ‘atmosphere.’
But more than anything, it’s that feeling of pure nostalgia that makes this game so legendary. Back in the day, when you first experienced bullet time and Max’s tragic story, it was groundbreaking. And revisiting it now, years later, it still holds up—not just as a piece of gaming history, but as a reminder of why we fell in love with video games in the first place.
Max Payne is a timeless classic that reminds you of late nights in front of the screen, fingers glued to the mouse, trying to pull off that perfect slow-mo dive. 10/10 would blast through hallways in slow motion and brood under neon lights again.”
Still playable on 2024 hardware with fixes that you can find on steam guides
For this game being released when it was HOLYYYYY they went all out, I will say i did encounter issues and had to use a mod/fixpack to get the game up and running but they were easily downloadable and worked wonders. The story was amazing and all the while hilarious exclusively due to Max mewing all the time, The "boss fights" in most cases pissed me off to high hell because of their extremely bullet sponge nature but a fantastic ending, interesting mysteries, AND THOSE NIGHTMARE SECTIONS AHHHH 8.5/10
Fun early 200's game, the only part that was not fun was the prologue missions before each chapter. They are buggy.
