This game has such a great PS1 feel to it, along with souls-borne gameplay. I love the dungeon aspect and I enjoyed every minute I have played so far!
Tyrant's Realm is a solid bite sized action RogueLike/SoulsLike hybrid type of game, I dig the retro aesthetic and sound design. There is a certain charm to the whole experience, feels comforting. The combat is pretty rudimentary but it feels rewarding, and once you get the parrying down is satisfying enough. The game is smaller than I anticipated there's only a hand full of levels and bosses, but there are a number of weapons and armors/shields to mess around with each with there own ability. I really liked the fish hook weapon from the shark boss and all the great swords. Runs do start to get repetitive tho and it gets easy fast fighting the same enemies over and over. It's fun and for the cheap entry fee especially when going for 100% is totally worth it, I just wish there was more to the game it's kinda basic overall. Would like to see more areas to explored and more hidden secrets and stuff but I had fun with it. 7/10
runs good on steamdeck. saw someone leave a negative review saying it runs bad. they are WRONG and need to uninstall their ai girlfriend trojan off their deck.
If "parry" introduced in tutorial is the standard...
This game needs some care....
Dont Buy!
Devs: fix it!
Perfect marriage of soulslike and roguelike. Combat is still weighty and satisfying but the overall gameplay experience is significantly less stressful. I've been very charmed by the graphical style and little details, this feels like it was made with love. Not too hard even at max difficulty, experienced souls players will beat the final boss in 5-10 hours or less.
Fun game and worth the price. If you're a fan of the old school souls like gameplay where healing, blocking, attacking is a commitment and can be punished if timed incorrectly, then this game is for you.
My only complaint is that slow, heavy hitting weapons feel near useless in the game as enemies hardly stagger to an attack, only to the amount of hits taken. Heavy weapons feel as though they have all the negatives of the weapon type but non of the positives. I found it difficult to use heavy weapons as you are more likely going to take damage committing to one swing and do less damage to an enemy than a faster weapon with moderate damage and less commitment to the attack so you have time to block, dodge or attack again.
Aside from that it was a fun game that you can complete in a few hours. Especially if you have experience playing the souls games. Managed to clear the highest difficulty in 6 hours. I don't see myself replaying this after completing it but I still have plenty of weapons and armor to unlock along with shortcuts so there is plenty of replay value.
Although this game is a roguelite you will most likely exhaust the map generation in a few runs and they will start looking pretty identical to previous runs. So maps can get a little boring. The bosses are fun and varied and each map is distinct along with their boss. However enemy variety is not great. The game offers about 10? enemy types and elite versions of these enemies. The only difference being that they hit harder and have more health so you will learn their basic attacks and timings pretty quickly.
All in all, I would recommend the game at its price point and what you can get out of it. If you are aching for more souls like content a little more faithful to Demon and Dark souls, then this game is for you. If you want a game that is difficult but fair and can sink either 15 or 30 mins into at one time, then this game is for you.
8/10, good game. Plays a lot like 3d Dead Cells. 3 unlocking difficulties, and you get the true ending after beating on the highest one. The game has good bones but there needs to be more variety in mobs. Elite enemies are a good step, so I think it'd be easy to add "master class" enemies or something. Multiplayer would be appreciated but that's probably too tall of an order.
It's a neat game but pretty limit in enemy variety and level design. I hope the developer makes a sequel with more stuff in it.
Fun, straightforward game. The world is minimal but interesting and creative. The combat is challenging but straightforward enough that one should be able to get a hang of it without too much trouble. Grinding boss battles to unlock their weapons (and achievements) is a little tedious but I enjoyed playing the game so I am not complaining too much about it. I would definitely recommend it as an easy to pick up game for quick sessions without needing to dedicate a huge amount of time in any single sitting.
Not particularly difficult and clunkier than most souls-likes I have played, but the roguelite mechanics add a nice twist and kept me playing until I reached the true ending.
This game kinda rocks. dark souls combat in a roguelike formula.
Very cool game best rendition of souls like & roguelike I've seen I havent encountered any bugs as of yet, the bosses and areas are well made, and I really like the special abilities the shields and armor have. My main request that I think would really help this games replay ability is adding special abilities to the weapons as well.
Dark Souls + Dead Cells + PSX = Tyrant's Realm. Not incredible, but a solid fun roguelike loop.
Really fun roguelite with a souls flavour.
It could use more stagger/stance breaking mechanics and windup times for some enemies are crazy long, but other than that it's really good.
It really captures the feel of dark souls 1 if it was a ps1 game except there is no bonfire so when you die that’s it. It’s basically a no death ds1 with ps1 graphics but the same atmosphere as ds1. Pretty awesome recommend for souls fans and fans of the retro ps1 game style in one. Definitely not an easy game but if you already are souls fan that is to be expected. Highly recommended.
Very nice game to play. It's like a relaxing Dark Souls, at least on the first difficulty setting, I have not tried a run on the next step up. Parrying is satisfying, I was going ham with the brass knuckles and getting those cinematic finishers. Has good replay value I'll definitely be trying a new run with different weapons/style. I recommend this game
One of, if not the best soulslike rougelike games I have ever played. The retro, PS1 art style is a nice cherry on top but it is a little overdone sadly as of this review - what isn't overdone however in the soulslike genre is TR's perfect re-use of DS's shield/parry system. It's so annoying to see every single game now need to be sekiro and only using parrying as a viable playstyle. Some players want to play the tank, so seeing TR actually allow you to use a shield and parry with it as a bonus, not a requirement, is so refreshing. There's only a few levels as of now and most of the content will be for completionists looking to drain the shops dry, but I'm sure more is soon to come.
Fun souls-like rogue-like that gives those nostalgic PS2 vibes in high def. Worth the buy.
Dark souls combat meets the best parts of rogue lite character randomization meets the progression system from Outrun.
This is a new all time favorite. Chef's Kiss*
Would pay $60.00 for a fully fleshed out version with more attack combinations like R1+ B etc. and more items, maps, etc.
Great game and update made it even better!
Feels bit eurojank, in a good way ofc.
Highly recommend if you like souls and roguelite games!
would love to see more games like this with old ps1 style and this type of gameplay. Really enjoying it!
I like the game's look, and the combat feels great. However, there are a few things that could be improved, such as the inability to turn off mouse smoothing. I highly recommend this game to anyone who enjoys combat from Dark Souls and roguelike games.
It's like Dead Cells & Souls, but it's far too easy for my liking. The game runs amazingly well and is well put together, looks good. Just wish it was more difficult or movesets for weapons were more varied.
A charming soulslike with heavy PS1 vibes. I say I recommend it, but honestly I'd give it a neutral rating if I could. I'm not the best soulslike or roguelike/lite player and I beat this on the first try. I do realize you can unlock higher difficulties so maybe I'll give those a shot, but other than the bosses in the routes I didn't choose, I don't feel like there's much else for me to see. Grab it on sale if you're hesitant, the game is fun but it's just short on content/variety.
Great Soulslike. Level design makes combat more the games style than exploration for the most part, Not in a horrible way though progression feels like a balance between Ds1&Deadcells. The recent update also made the experience 10x better! Boss parry and some late game cosmetic challenges for the win! hope to see more to come!!!!
Having gone through a handful of beaten runs and starting Difficulty II, I can recommend this game for anyone looking for a Souls-like Rogue-like. Lots of fun, hope this gets some DLC down the road.
If you own a Steam deck, this feels like a perfect game for it. Quick runs that usually last about 30min-ish, easy to pick up and drop.
This game is a great souls-like, rogue-like and it checks all the boxes for me.
- Hitting and being hit feels good
- Stamina management feels balanced
- Combos are good too
- Difficulty feels appropriate
- Leveling is exploration based and distilled down to three 'stats'
- Maps are a generated maze
- Environments variety
- Destructible props!
This game is perfect to jump in and out of, quick runs without a hard commitment.
Pretty solid roguelike. Needs some polish and balance tweaks but what we got here passes the vibe check.
I've noticed that some dual weapons will actually do twice the damage of single weapons, which gets kind of broken. Also, some weapons within the same class are just a flat improvement on others, so having a tier system for weapons would be nice to keep track of them.
Really close.
No proper two-handing or dual wielding, abilities being tied to armor sets, repetitive boss spawns, etc. left me wanting for something very much like this, but not quite this.
Might scratch your Soulslike itch before Nightreign, but I can't recommend the game: There are simply too many lazy design choices.
Souls rougelike. Somthing i’ve been searching after for years. It’s very simple mechanics wise and really could use some polish. Overall, I think this game is a great release to open the door to more like it. I appreciate what it does for the evolution of the genre and hope to see more in the future.
Also, the ps1 graphics were a huge draw for me.
I adore the PSX/Nightmare Creatures aesthetics. The Dead Cells type progression combined with Soulslike gameplay have potential for a great loop. The foundation is here. The game just lacks variety for my taste. I just don't feel like pushing through higher difficulties because there's not enough biomes, tile sets, enemies... but for the asking price, I can't complain. Both (aforementioned) DC and DS took years to perfect their formula and build content. I had my fun and could see myself returning for later updates or DLCs. Overall, I can recommend it. :)
Made it to final boss and I have to say this game is beautiful, fun and has huge potential for current and future content. I am a veteran SoulsBorneRing player and enjoy roguelikes and this scratched my itch real good. If you also played souls make sure to turn off auto lock on when attacking enemies in settings. Bosses and enemies are awesome and fun to learn and fight. As you get deeper in the game item variety is extensive. The aesthetic of the game is gorgeous and brings a feeling of nostalgia and adolescence. Very happy to hear there are large content updates coming in the future.
Some constructive criticism. One critique is I think enemies should be unique to one level or just more variety of enemies that seem to fit in the level, some feel like they fit in but I think it would feel more unique because I already know how to fight those enemies. Another critique is more weapon and armour variety in the beginning, I know that is a lot with the blueprint gear in mind but it felt a bit barren seeing the same gear throughout my runs until buying some. Running/rolling attacks and backstabs(to smaller enemies) would add a lot to the flow of combat (the camera is also a bit jenk but I'm used to switching lock on and off as situation calls) from souls. An eventual hub area would be nice even if tiny, could have archive, world map and random starting gear before going into first level.
Overall 8/10 for me right now. I knew I would love this game when I found it and recommend to anyone and everyone, even if you haven't played any soulslike/roguelike. I would definitely donate to help in the work and purchase any future dlc content(once base game is refined and additional content is added).
Very fun, quick rouge-like similar to deadcells in a 3D style. Runs have been averaging around 20 minutes with full clearing each room/floor so each run doesn't take too much time or commitment. Bosses are fun, the mechanics are very solid and blueprints/unlocks are fairly quick to unlock.
Great game, seems like a fast one to 100% achievements as well if that's something you enjoy!
Souls combat works really well with rogue like. You unlock stuff at a good rate and it's fun to change up your build based on finding a new weapon or armor you want to use.
My only complaints are that turning up the brightness so you can see in darker dungeons completely blows out the color, and that the controls are always displayed and take up a bunch of screen space. This is my 20th run, I know to press B to dodge.
Looking forward to Iron Pineapple's review
the only thing good about this game are the graphics
Cool enough. Nice visuals, rather fluid (except clunky fights), and atmospheric. However, they could do away with that laggy combat system and from-trash-software dodge-roll-to-cheat bs. Plus, timing of counters is evil-gods-awful, and the shield defence is usually a bad alternative to rolls.
At least (atm) you can fly straight to the merchant/boss room, only picking up shrines and chests while ignoring mobs entirely.
And as others pointed out, there is not that much variety or content now...
A small, simple, straightforward and very understandable Souls-y rogue-lite. A combination of the Dead Cells unlock system with simplified Dark Souls combat.
You have Armour, weapon and shield options, each has unique properties and each scales with a separate "stat" which there are 3 of (similar to Dead Cells scrolls). The enemies are sparse, usually max of 2 per room, and there is some variety, which is fine due to the amount of enemies total you encounter during the run.
Bosses are fun, simple but are appropriately the most dangerous parts of the run. Most importantly though that the bosses are very unique and have character, it's not just "cool knight guy" or anything like that, but an elephant man with a giant hammer or a warerat or a prisoner with skulls for fist weapons, they are all fun.
The main "issue" is that the game is indeed small, which the price does justify. There isn't too much variety in the runs once you do 4 or 5 of them, so seeing a game like this but expanded further would be really interesting.
Cannot run the game, it crashes on start, and when I looked up the dev team for help they dodged the responsibility and blamed Nvidia. Refunded.
worth the time and money if you are a combined fan of soulslikes and roguelikes
Beat the game in 70 min the first time. No deaths. Thought huh, this was not bad. Then i noticed it continues with more unlocks so i keep playing. It's a great gem this game. Chill and fun. Hope they ad more content, and i would buy a DLC for this.
Just did 100% achievements.
3,5 hours for the true ending.
10 hours for 100%.
Just so you know what you getting into.
Its a really fun little game.
If you like soulslike or roguelite try it out.
The ps1 vibes are good too.
If you're a fan of Souls style games and Roguelites, then this game should be an immediate purchase.
It starts slow, as do all Rogues, but once you purchase the ability to have a random weapon and set of armor appear at the start of every run (with in game currency), the game really takes off.
If you need a game you can have a few runs at after work to "relax", this is it.
Good Game, short on the content after beating the hardest difficulty final boss though. Not enough variety in potential levels/bosses/play styles for me to want to play too much longer. This game would slap if it had 50%+ more content.
The Combat and feel of a PS1 Demons Souls with a very simple but addictive and fun progression. Some things remind me of Dead Cells in a few ways. Loving my time with it so far!
I would almost recommend this game but it doesn't live up to what it's actually trying to be.
It says "Tyrant's Realm is a roguelite action-adventure inspired by classic PS1 visuals".
Yeah, the only thing that is inspired by PS1 visuals are some graphic changing visions - that's it. I thought i would have a old ps1 type of game but no - I got dark souls basic and a repeating game after 2 hours.
If you took like the same 8 maps on repeat, dark souls gameplay and diablo tornament to run the same maps over and over again but with harder difficulity.
Visual, atmosphear and such - awesome. There should have been a longer singleplayer game here with a story instead of this roguelite shit because that almost made me quit and uninstall + refund the game when I understood I couldn't save - sure roguelite but since when did a ps1 game have roguelite like this and dark souls gameplay? Is it just inspired to sell a visual ps1 game but dark souls or are you trying to sell a ps1 game?
Because if you had made this like a ps1 game I would have approved it.
Now this game got 2½ hour from me and I don't think it will be more. Oh well, 10€ to kill a night, cheaper then a night at the local bar!
Phenomenal game. I beat the first boss on my first try, and it made me want to play more even when I was best down by the next bosses. That little rush from an early boss kill. *chef’s kiss*
Best part about it is the progression system - finally someone successfully cribbed Dead Cells’s progression and unlock system. Hoping for more content, even tho I obviously have a lot to discover as is.
Highly recommended.
cool ass visuals fun gameplay souls esque but not that hard
There's nothing wrong with the game, the concept is cool, combat is responsive, several areas are weapons (dead cells shop style) but if what lured you in is the "Souls-like" aspect of it, I found it incredibly not challenging. I'm a souls veteran but I'm not a god, got through an entire run without a single struggle or challenge. If what you are looking for is a challenge, then maybe this won't be for you. If you just wanna have a chill casual run, it's perfect.
It's good and lives up to the PS1 Nostalgia. Combat is good too for souls like controls.
It has a pretty shallow pool of enemy variety. The levels and enemies change in presentation well, but the combat of the enemies and bosses don't differ much per area. Not much story to go off either.
Fun, but not a high skill ceiling, a simple and quick game. 6/10.
Everything in the game description is accurate. The combat is easy to learn and not difficult to master, your biggest enemy will be the camera angle, but don't put yourself into a corner and you'll be fine. While hardcore roguelike/soulslike fans might find it lacking in difficulty, the game delivers solid game play and fun 1 hour runs. If you are into retro visuals and ps1 type of quality games this is something you should check out.
