this is a fantastic game but the keyboard controls are so fucking bad so either play on a controller or prepare to either rebind everything or warp your entire hand for this specific game
I miss playing SOTN and this scratches that exact same itch, even without buying the Castlevania DLC. Bonus points for being able to go from opening the game to full on action within 5 seconds, then being able to go from full on action to quitting to desktop just as quick. In and out, baby.
Really good and gameplay is addictive, game is worth my money. Baseball + Cleave stun are my favorite strat
its fun and kind of hard but not to hard to the point your gonna ragequit. The weapons are cool and there's a wide variety of weapons. I would reccomend to anyone.
While most of my playtime (and my 5BC) are on the switch, this game is incredible, with so much replayability and so many challenges. If you manage to grow tired of it, there's always something new to mess you up or to try- an wonderful experience.
Smooth combat, great controls, amazing graphics, and high replayability?? This game is simply fantastic and one of the best indie games out there.
10/10
It's like Castlevania on speed. Great combat and it's addicting unlocking new weapons and outfits.
REALLY, really good rougelike. Little bit frustrating dying near the end, and the dlcs are a bit overpriced, but the base game and everything in it is worth the money in my opinion. Extremely fun gameplay. 8.5/10 from me.
Dead Cells is an outstanding rogue-lite game with elements of the metropolis, which is likely to please fans of dynamic and complex games. Developed by Motion Twin, released in 2018, it combines intense gameplay, beautiful pixel graphics and deep system progression, making it one of the best in its genre. The game has received high ratings from the community and critics, although some players have noted its complexity and repeatability as potential drawbacks.
The game offers a thrilling gameplay where every defeat is an experience. You control a living corpse exploring the cursed island, with many enemies. Responsive management, a variety of weapons and abilities allows you to experiment with different styles. Procedural generation of levels makes each race unique.
The pixel graphics create a dark but attractive atmosphere. The soundtrack complements the immersion, highlighting epic battles with bosses.
Some players find the game too complicated or monotonous due to repeated deaths and procedural generation. However, these aspects also play a positive role in teaching players based on failures.
Brilliant gameplay, combat is fluid and smooth, never fails to feel satisfying! And it manages to keep the mood pretty light. Very worth playing.
Excellent game! Even though I'm not at all good at action games where reflexes are important, this one pulled me in and took me for a good many hours already. It has a nice learning curve and you get to unlock upgrades that change the game-play in a meaningful way. You need to adapt and learn new ways to play. You wander in and out for your comfort zone!
Recommended for sure.
This is such a good game and its not even that expensive if you get some extra cash please buy this game.
Gameplay: Super replayable and exhilarating. The combat feels fast and fluid, and evolves the more you play. There’s always something new to try—a different weapon combo, a new route, or a tougher boss. 9.2/10
Controls/UI: basic controls, nothing special, easy to understand, work well.
7.5/10
Graphics/Art Style: The art is, for lack of a better word, PEAK. It’s beautiful pixel art that somehow looks slightly 3d. Fits amazingly, I don't think anyone could look at the art and say it's bad, you could hate the game, but you would still like the art. 9.7/10
Sound/Music: soundtrack bro, such a vibe fits so well with the game. 8.7/10
Replayability/Progression: Kay, so replayability, I have over 50 hours, and I have only made it to the second-to-last boss once, and I still play like almost every day. 9.5/10
Bugs/Polish: No bugs. 8/10
DLC: DLCs are good; they merge well with the rest of the game and simply expand your options for your path. Nothing extraordinary, but good if you like the base game, then I recommend them. 7.6/10
Overall: I'm going to give this a 9/10.
The roguelike that got me into roguelikes.
Played this to death on the PS4. Decided to buy a copy for my Steamdeck too. Combat is what makes this game. Probably the best 2d combat in any game I've played. Music is phenomenal. Build variety is feels infinite. Progression is addictive. Levels and enemy design are extremely varied. Really captures that one more run feeling. Only Hades has come close.
goog game playing it makes me forget about my disability sice i dont have to move anywhere while i play it!
love the game especially the challenges yet i dont recommend this for people who can get stressed easily like me.
i might play this game again because sometimes i just wanted to play it again and sometimes the game is actually fun because of the challenges it offers, but being stuck unable to win the fight when fighting a certain boss after spending half an hour is just not fun, it's like a total waste of my time since I play for fun, not to get stressed for literally more than an hour just because of a fucking game.
call me suck at this game, i just want to tell that it's not fun when playing a game that's meant to be fun instead having a headache because of losing after spending half or more than an hour, especially when you lose over and over again.
the feeling when winning or defeating the boss is definitely satisfying, but i'm not spending like literally hundreds of hours of playtime just to beat a single fucking boss and by playing the game that i don't even enjoy playing it because of losing hundreds of times and have to start over again every time i die, spending another hours and hours to beat the goddamn game, meanwhile, i could do something else that is way more useful other than stressing by playing this game.
the choice is yours to buy and play the game.
just a little reminder, as a consumer, we're playing games mostly for fun, not to get stressed out.
It's just a great game, I've been playing the ios version and I recently started the steam version, I just love this game so much even thought it's hardcore. Only thing is that I lost all my progress on my ios saves.
i alr played on ps4, on mobile, and now i bought it on pc, still one of the greatest roguelite ever, and the dlcs make the game even better, a good challenge and pretty nice boss fights
jesus christ i have a therapist now because of this game and that cost more than the game
would suggest fro some quick easy fun
The hours I put into this game allowed me to absolutely body the game when the team was showcasing the queen and the sea at a convention and I never fully recovered from it.
I don't know. I just kept going, one run after another, I couldn't stop. A voice in my head just kept repeating, "one more run"
“I died. I sweated. I died again.”
Dead Cells is less of a game and more of a high-intensity cardio workout disguised as pixelated violence.
Every run was a beautiful disaster.
If you enjoy dying creatively, sweating profusely, and developing a deep hatred for elite enemies who teleport, this game is your soulmate.
Would recommend. 5/5
Do you want a game where no two playthroughs are ever the same? With literally hundreds of weapons and build options every run, plus several DLCs and many biomes added, this game will keep you coming back for hundreds of hours trying to defeat the escalating difficulties with it's addicting combat, slick pixel graphics, and awesome soundtrack
10/10 would get skill-checked again.
undoubtedly the best indie game there is with countless hours of gameplay
you can also play the game on mobile, but steam deck would be the best!
I didn't really like this game when I first played it but when I came back like a year later I realised that this game is true peak and for some reason im not playing it
Crisp controls, simple but deep mechanics, great variety, great difficulty progression - Dead Cells is one of the biggest names in the genre for a reason. One of the most fast-paced and aggressive roguelikes I have played, which is my preferred style.
FWIW this is one of the most punishing roguelikes I have played - mess up one two-second fight and you just die and have to go back to the start. This is brutal for a game with runs that last about an hour. It makes the highs higher (getting true ending was one of my most satisfying roguelike experiences) but of course the lows are low and it *can* start to feel bad if you find that you keep dying on a particular difficulty.
There are some strategic elements to the game that aren't obvious or pointed out by the game, so if you're getting really into the game, be sure to check out the r/deadcells subreddit's pinned post for a spoiler-free guide. Highly recommend as long as you are willing to die a LOT.
Used to play this constantly on xbox, and its still the best roguelike ive ever seen.
In theory I shouldn't like this game. I am a fan of metroidvanias but I mostly play rpgs and other story focused games. I'm fairly completionist but get frustrated and bored by games that are too grindy or repetetive. Having to start over from the beginning every time you die didn't sound like a fun time to me.
But this is a really fun game! The levels change enough from run to run to not get boring, there are so many different weapons that require their own play style and the game is clearly made by people who love the genre. Parts of it are hard but it never feels unfair or like it's trying to punish you as a player.
very fun expect to die a lot; just wish they would continue to update the game
It's a very good game but also i FUCKING HATE THIS GAME SO FUCKING MUCH LIKE GOD DAMN this game mekes me want to hurt someone
So good it makes me want to actually go outside and hump a tree because it makes me all excited and giddy and wants me to improve from being severely chronically online thanks
A highly addicting game that pulls you in deeper the more runs you make. Once you start unlocking gear and new powers it is hard to not justify one more run.
This is one of those games where I wish Steam would let you post a neutral review. There are many things to like about this game but there are a couple major points that hold it back for me and make other games in the genre more worth your while.
First, the maps grow stale after awhile. They're all randomly generated to a point but they all have the same major locations on them. The same locked doors, the same locations for keys, the same general locations for gateways to the next map. After about 20 hours of playing, I dread playing the first three or so maps because its like going through the motions to get to more interesting maps I've played less.
Second, the weapon pool is annoying. You unlock weapons with cells as you play but there is no pathway for unlocking actual better weapons. Some weapons just kinda suck and if you unlock a terrible weapon, it is now permanently in your weapon pool, lowering the chance of getting a good weapon you already had unlocked. I don't actually want to unlock weapons and I don't think that's a good thing in a rogue-like.
The combat and movement are quite good and the method of upgrading character stats in each run is solid and satisfying so if you think you'll like those things and can look past the two negative points I outlined, then this game might be for you. But for me, its a pass.
Brings me back to why I love video games. I bought all of the dlcs because it's worth it. A must have for all gamers.
haven't played these types of games since SEGA, but this game is addicting. The weapons and powers are freakin awesome and so fun to play with
This is the first rouge-like I actually liked just because the combat feels so good and all the references to some of my favorite games.
Buying every DLC of this game, loving it and praising it ad vitam aeternam but it'll forever be incomplete won't it?
I've been a fan ever since I first touched it, the humour, the graphics, the story.. and despite not being that good at the game, I still fully completed it through sheer knowledge check and learning
Unfortunately the story of the beheaded will forever be nothing much
It's genuinely my only complain with the game, that it doesn't have a proper end
Still though, it's worth anyone's time and money
Just don't be a casual
A rogue-like that isn't scared to spit on your face when you die and say that you suck at the game. A really fun game that gets brutally difficult later on.
So, after 50 hours I managed to finish two runs. The fact that I try for 50 hours the same thing, says: It rocks. Controls are perfect. The game is fast, easy to learn, hard to progress. I love these kind of games that are logical in themselves.
It's not boring, but always motivating. More weapons, more skills, more mutations, more more more.
The meta progression system keeps the player going. It's just great.
Even though roguelikes generally aren't my thing, dead cells is a masterpiece! Great aesthetics, great exploration, great difficulty level, great mechanics, and some of the most addictive combat I've had from a game. Even though I've died a lot I always want to come back for more. The run backs can feel long, I still enjoy exploring a new layout of a familiar area and the enemies it holds. If you loved Hollow Knight then DC is a must!
I had a lot of fun with this game but honestly, my enjoyment went down with each additional boss cell added. Having a basic enemy being able to one shot you 25 minutes into a run is demoralizing at the least, especially when they have so much health that you cant consistently kill them and have to rely on repeatedly dodging/parrying to beat just one enemy. The balancing is certainly questionable.
addictive, fast, frustrating, fun. Good game to run when you don't have a large amount of time to play. I dont typically like rogue like games, but the metroid vania style is a lot of fun.
this game is a combination of yelling out slurs from the top of your lungs when you die on the final boss with 5 cells, and calling this your favorite game
Fantastic roguelike/roguelite game. Came to the game after all DLCs, patches, and development was done. The result of their work is awesome, easily one of my favorite games now. Deceptively high replay ability with the boss stem cell difficulties modifying monsters, mechanics, adding mechanics, and much more. Highly recommend!
this game is awesome, some of the most fun and satisfying combat ive ever experienced, plus a great sense of exploration and progression
Even in just 77 minutes of gameplay, the replayability is already obvious. Different weapons, paths, and playstyles make each run feel unique. There’s this addictive loop of “just one more run” that pulls you back in every time.
Overall, Dead Cells hits that sweet spot between challenge and fun. It’s stylish, brutal, and feels built for endless hours of replaying and improving. I’m already hooked—and I’m just getting started.
very glad they made the first level music a banger because you're gonna hear it a lot
It’s not about beating the game. It’s about dying stylishly with 200 cells and that one legendary weapon you’ll never see again. 11/10
Amazing game, the boss(prolly bosses, i have only got to lvl 4 before dying) is hard, but the dopamine hit when you beat him is MASSIVE
Fast paced and frantic when you start. It can seem tough, but as you keep playing it gets easier and easier. Knowing the enemies moves and building powerful synergy with your weapons and skills is essential. Recommend this if you enjoy games like Rogue Legacy. There's a lot of repetition, but you'll make slow progress eventually.
This game is literally suffering except for that once in a blue moon run where nothing can even look at you without evaporating and I love it.
