If you took the brutality of Dark Souls, the speed of a Metroidvania, and the roguelike randomness of Hades, then drenched it all in pixel-art gore, you’d get Dead Cells.
You play as a reanimated pile of cells possessing a headless corpse, waking up in a constantly shifting, ever-changing dungeon of death. There’s no hand-holding, no easy way out—just fast, fluid combat where every mistake can (and will) get you killed. But don’t worry—dying is just part of the fun.
The combat is insanely satisfying. Every weapon feels different—whether you’re slashing through enemies with twin blades, firing explosive crossbows, or setting everything on fire with firebrands. You can dodge, roll, parry, and chain attacks like an absolute ninja. And when you get the perfect build going? Pure chaos.
The level design is randomly generated but always rewarding. Every run feels fresh, whether you’re slicing through poisonous sewers, dodging traps in ancient castles, or fighting mutated nightmares in the depths of the island. And let’s not forget the brutal, adrenaline-pumping boss fights that will wreck you repeatedly until you learn their patterns like a true warrior.
The game’s progression system is what keeps you hooked. Even when you die, you keep unlocking new weapons, abilities, and shortcuts, making every attempt feel like you’re getting just a little bit closer to victory. Plus, there are so many secrets, hidden rooms, and alternative paths that no two runs feel the same.
The art and music? Beautiful. The fluid animations make every dodge and attack look amazing, and the soundtrack slaps, especially when you're in the middle of an intense fight.
It’s challenging, addicting, and brutally fun—the kind of game where you tell yourself “just one more run” and suddenly, it’s 3 AM.
9/10 perfect dodges. Would die a thousand more times again.
From graphics to movement - it's as good as it can get. Wonderful game and quickly became a classic for me.
This was my first ever roguelite and "metroidvania", I would like to recommend this to others. What I love about this game is its unique art style and its mechanics. The weapons is what brings life to the game with each having unique features as well as allowing you to have your own unique playstyle. Yes you will die again and again but thats the point, you learn from it and I think thats what makes this game neat in my eyes.
Dead Cells stands out for its incredibly fluid and responsive movement, letting you dash, dodge, and traverse environments with ease. The wide variety of weapons and builds keeps combat engaging and dynamic. However, it can become repetitive over time, and the DLCs don’t add much to the core mechanics. Still, it's a solid roguelite with metroidvania elements that's definitely worth playing.
By far the best action-platformer rogue-like game I've ever played.
It feels perfect. I personally have issues getting into a game because of player input issues. I press wrong buttons and it drives me crazy, but this game feels so natural.
I didn't understand the game mechanics at all (I played Hades and other rogue like games, didn't get this one)...
This game fucking sucks I hate it!

Ok originally I wanted this to be just a joke review but in all honesty its a good game. But if I would sit here and say "Oh its perfect its great its lovely" I would be lying. This game requires attention and patience. Mostly the latter.
If you play this game without thinking you wont go anywhere.
If you are greedy and stupid you wont get anywhere either.
The biggest issue this game has is that it has a skill ceiling. And I have yet to reach it without putting my hands on a cursed fricking chest! ITS JUST 10 KILLS! HOW CAN THAT BE HARD TO GET RIGHT? LOL IM JUST GONNA DIE REPEATEDLY CAUSE I HIT ROLL TOO LATE!
Is this game what republicans think abortion clinics do with the fetuses
One of the best games in its genre.
I have played Dead Cells from its Early Access, and to this day, I'm still loving the gameplay loop.
There's a bit of everything in this game: hundreds of weapons, abilities, and cosmetics to unlock, challenging enemies and bosses, and very cool levels that are all special in their own way.
This is a roguelike for the ages.
Dead Cells is a masterful blend of roguelike and metroidvania gameplay, featuring fluid combat, gorgeous pixel art, and endless replayability. Every run feels fresh, making it an absolute must-play.
-> start the game
-> oh this is actually a banger
-> get to 4BC
-> play 30min only to be 1HK by a random zombie
-> oh this is actually a banger
This is exactly what a videogame should be: endless replayability, fresh and energetic gameplay, explosively challenging and fun, visually enticing pixel-art, semi-permadeath, which makes every attempt unique and engaging, allowing you to learn a little bit more of it every single time. I have been playing games for more than 20 years, and I rarely feel this vortex of 'just one game more' taking over me, forcing me continue playing instead of quitting, and that's a great sign that you're playing an amazing videogame. I've played for less than 10 hours and I already know this game will not be uninstalled from my PC, for it's the type of game you never really stop playing. In addition, both free and paid DLCs are lovely, the constant references to other metroidvanias are hilarious, and they even allow you to experience them with weapons that emulate said games, which is absolutely awesome.
This is clearly a 10/10, worth buy full price.
A game that would be great if you were trapped with it in a desert island and couldn't have any others.
"An Absolute Masterpiece!"
Dead Cells is one of the most addictive, thrilling, and rewarding games I've played in years! From the moment I picked it up, I couldn't put it down. The gameplay is fast-paced, fluid, and constantly evolving as you explore randomly generated levels filled with new challenges and enemies.
The variety of weapons, abilities, and power-ups keeps every run fresh, and the progression system feels rewarding without ever being overly grindy. Each death feels like a learning experience rather than a setback, and coming back stronger with new gear or upgrades is incredibly satisfying.
The art style is gorgeous, and the soundtrack is a perfect match to the action. The devs have truly poured their hearts into this game, and it shows in every detail. It's the perfect blend of roguelike and Metroidvania, and I can't recommend it enough. Whether you're a seasoned gamer or a newcomer to the genre, Dead Cells is a must-play.
If you haven't already, do yourself a favor and pick it up. You won't regret it!
A flawed gem. If a metroidvania roguelite appeals to you then this will scratch the itch, at least for a couple days. However, only 7 hours in I am starting to get bored and annoyed with the game. Possibly the most annoying thing is that they have worked DLC ads into the gameplay. In almost every run I find myself exploring towards the edge of a map thinking I am nearing the exit only to find a door that says I must purchase DLC to enter it. How did anyone think this was a good idea? I payed for a full game but I feel like I'm playing what should be a free to play game that's putting a paywal in front of the full experience. Especially not okay in a game that rewards fast finish times, this ruins most speed runs I go on.
And the overall game has a very arcade like feel, which can be good or bad depending on if you are expecting a deeper experience. It's best to consider this a casual game as the random rogue-lite elements and limited enemy variation will become quite familiar after just a few hours.
There's still a lot to like here and the polish of controls, graphics, and mechanics are commendable but don't expect this to feel as deep as a true Metroid or Castlevania game.
fun but freezes a lot, might just be my computer, can be pretty frustrating
This game deserves every positive review it gets. From the combat to the art design, this game's a masterpiece.
Plus the DLCs are also worth buying

A very well done rogue lite. I play this on my Steam Deck mostly and it is a TOP notch experience.
The game is "easy to play, difficult to master" so keep that in mind as you won't be "leveling-up" to get stronger between runs. Each run is more or less entirely reset from every previous run. They have a handful of upgrades across each play session but nothing amazing to write home about.
its a fun comfort game. Tons of replay ability.
It was fun for a bit. I think I prefer a more standard story in my metroidvania though.
great game. one of my top 3 personal favorites of all time. sad that i beat it because that means i cant play it for the first time anymore.
Great game to kill time. I have over 700 hours on Xbox and recently started playing on the PC, and while this game IS/CAN BE difficult, but very, VERY fun to learn and master.
A great platformer, I waited until a discount was applied to it and took it with all the dls. Definitely have a collection for fans of platformers.
This is one of my fav games of all time. Played it a lot on the switch and got it on pc to actually feel like I 100% the game with actual achievements
My FAVOURITE rouge like and I really recommend to those who love starting new rouge like games with unique selling points with a great story filled with lore and humour 10/10
I think the replay-ability is the best thing about Dead Cells. I think using different builds with your character is probably the most satisfying. It allows you to optimize your character against different enemies and bosses. If you lose and start over, then you just try a different build to see how far you can get. Having a variety of costumes and hidden places/paths makes it fun to replay as well. Also the levels changing there layout and where enemies are places is also great. Fantastic Game! Would highly recommend!
best action rogue-like ever, can't change my mind and never be, other rogue-likes are cool too but this is by far the most enjoyable to me.
buy this game, play it, unlock a bunch of shit, AND THEN get the DLC or else it may be overwhelming and you can go down the 'wrong' path and feel cheated out of a good run by going through castlevania instead of deadcells
I would recommend this game to anyone who is a fan of the rouge-like genre, rewarding gameplay loop.
I had a million billion hours on Dead Cells back when I only had a Switch, and I've been more than happy to replay it on PC! I can genuinely say it's one of my favorite games, it just oozes style with the gorgeous pixel art, and is brimming with nearly endless content, which I've barely scratched the surface of. It's the perfect game for just shutting off your brain after a long day at work. It perfectly blends the roguelike and metroidvania genres, and the weapon and enemy variety is fantastic! I was sad to hear that more Dead Cells updates were planned, only to be canceled so all hands could work on Windblown. That's not to say I'm not looking forward to the finished product of Windblown, as I'm a sucker for roguelikes of all kinds. But as a primarily single-player gamer, I'd gladly pay up for more Dead Cells updates in the future, it's such a phenomenal game and I'd love to see it grow ever more. If the devs ever see this, once you're all finished with Windblown, please give us more Dead Cells! I'd lose my head over more Dead Cells content!!!
Just a good game. I remember feeling overwhelmed at the beginning at the magnitutde of the amount of unlockable items, but I got so sucked into the game and now I'm just excited to 100% this
it is okay. Totally fine.
For what you get it is a bit expensive. The DLC in particular is far too pricey.
Many of the items aren't particularly fun and the game play is quite hard.
I think this is a bit more frustrating than fun and I can't quite recommend it.
If you get the base, maybe pass on the DLC.
The game is incredibly good, I'm the most casual player I know so take that as you will but goddamn! I love this game so much. Very much a dungeon crawler, and it's so much fun.
I think as I play my play style will evolve over time, it really is a great game, 10/10 would recommend! <3
Really fun, it's awesome to make an unstoppable build. The combat is fun and skill based, and it's cool to finally make it to a new zone. Overall good game for a fair price. It goes on sale often though so maybe wait if it's not just to save money.
endless fun that will keep you coming back i def recomend getting the dlcs its worth it adds so much more fun
it's very good and i likey. But in reality I find the weapons to all work very differently from each other, yet almost all are still extremely fun to use. I mostly stick with melee weapons but the ranged are still great fun to use. Very good, very nice
This game needs no introduction ; it is and probably always will be popular for a reason: it is easy to play, entertaining, and somewhat addictive. You can attack foes, parry assaults, and counterattack. Although they are simple mechanics they always keep you up to your feet as a single moment of carelessness might drag you back to the beginning, Having Elite Enemies and Boss Fights be simple and yet they may catch you off guard if you lose concentration. Although I haven't played it much or considered it my main game at the time of writing this review, it will always be my favorite game in my Steam library.
im playing different timelines but i keep dying in each time line... my variants suck at this game. is my mental health ok? 10/10 worth it
I don't think I have enough skill, patience, or time for another "You might as well restart if you get hit" roguelite title. I think I'm on the precipice of falling head over heels into it. It's not without its charm, but I like Hades and Noita better (two opposite extremes of the genre, I think)
Just an incredible game. The difficulty progression is great, the weapon variance is great and there are so many playstyles available on any given run. If you like roguelites and metroidvania games, this is perfect for you.
I love metroidvanias. This one has enough Build variety to keep it interesting, while being hard enough to keep you engaged. 7/10, much enjoy such wow.
Damn ngl The pixel art is gorgeous, It’s challenging but rewarding, keeping you hooked as you unlock new weapons and abilities.
But It would be great if players on PC and mobile could connect and play together. That would take the game to the next level.
Highly addictive roguelike
Haven't gotten to the DLC just yet though, have a lot more time on another platform
Highly recommend
I really like the idea of this great marvelous game. I was surprise they brought back the music of Castlevania, not just the ordinary music they remaking it. Just I don't know why they not keep continuing the story of Castlevania. The game is short and I was disappoint. At the end I recommend 100% to try it.
So much fun, game mechanics are smooth and so many builds to try. Definitely worth it.
This game is the greatest. It has become one of my favourite games despite me only having 28 hours on it. I may be a bit bad at it, considering I have beaten it literally ONCE and it was on my past run. But every single run i find it incredibly interesting, and i find all the hidden lore and crossovers implemented great. If you plan on buying a DLC, my personal ranks are: 1) The Queen and the Sea, 2) Fatal Falls, 3) The Bad seed. Amazing game, cannot give it enough praise.
I played the shimata out of this game on mobile and I was stuck at 5BC because doing anything on my dinky little phone screen was damn near impossible. After many months of being away from the game, I decided to try my luck with the PC version, and I started all over. I soon found out why I fell in love with this game the first time around and boy do I love it. Though the game is dead, I will still see it to it's end.
This game is the full package, for players who want to dive deep and players who want some casual fun. Give this game a chance and I'm sure it will surprise you.
