This game is just a really good roguelite with fluid movement and super well implemented franchise colabs.
its can be challenging at times, but it is sosososo fun
One of the best in genre. Has responsive controls, diverse build options, and a smooth gameplay flow. Highly engaging and enjoyable.
Greatest game ever made. I'm only on bc 3 but can't stop playing.
I feel as though I am constantly improving. The general loop and soundtrack never get old, and I love the art style. Every time i unlock a new bc there's a new plethora of content that spills out like a dam opening. I bought every DLC and all of them are equally as amazing as the base game. 10/10 highly recommend
Dead Cells definitely scratches the Rogue-like/lite itch if you've got it. It's not super hard to beat the base game, especially if you use boring ranged strategies and wait for cooldowns and take a really long time.
However, there's a lot of extra content to explore, and you can modify the difficulty level using a system similar to Heat Gauge from Hades. There's also lots of DLC to explore.
I'm writing this review after beating the base game after spending 7 hours on the game, but looking forward to re-visiting the other content when I have more time.
Rogue-like/lite is a Top 3 favorite game genre for me right now, and this is a classic Rogue-like/lite that I would recommend to anyone that wants to experience the genre.
phenomenal game. very well designed. it can be moderately difficult, but always fun and satisfying. if you enjoy action roguelikes, this is a must.
this game would be 10x more fire if i wasnt getting put in combos by random enemies like 15 minutes into the game. buy this its fun
An amazing action roguelike platformer game. The gameplay is extremely satisfying and enjoyable with the combat being smooth and fast making it an addicting game in my opinion.
What I personally love about it is how well they executed the idea of the game and the big variety of equipment there is to unlock while playing.
Also the advice I would give is, dont be afraid to die, death isn't bad. Im saying that because during the game you will die a lot of times. You learn things from dying, for example you get killed by a specific entity? Next time you will know how to attack it, while at the same time you will have learned its attacking system and how to avoid it.
Overall i think this is an amazing game I would definitely recommend getting it's very fun to play!
PEAK
Controls are immensely fluid, combat is the most satisfying of any video game I've played, the roguelike elements are balanced very well. I love that it is not RNG what level you go to, you always choose that yourself.
I am very happy with the VASTLY expansive assist mode options that allow those who struggle with certain aspects of the game to breeze through them while still gaining the full experience on other regards. I, for example, am very not fond of the spike traps and platforming bits, I feel the physics afforded to the main character do not at all suit precision platforming. So having the option to turn the damage those spike traps do down to 20% of what it once was makes an IMMEASURABLE improvement to my enjoyment of the game.
I love this game. I love the little goofy references and jokes that appear throughout the game. The gameplay is pretty good, despite me dying after 1 second of entering a room, and is pretty smooth and requires a bit of strategy as well. The areas have great designs and even though I haven't beaten the game, but from what I've seen, the bossfights are amazing and enemies are really unique. And if you have played Windblown, you'll like Dead Cells, it's basically the same game but 2D.
Absolute banger, very easy to understand, the difficulty is pretty moderate depending on the stuff you get, very smooth to play and really fun, would recommend anytime !
I didn't really get into the boss cells, but I still had a blast with this game. This is one of the few (in my opinion) games that gets the rogue-like formula right, with there always being something new for you to find, or some new build to try out. Truly addicting right until the end, and the DLCs only add to it.
I love this games smooth mechanichs, and how satisfying it is to slay enemies. this is one of the best rouglikes i have ever played. one detail is that i normally love rouglike games, but this one is just different
You like a lot of items? With a lot of details? With a simple math to success in your run?
You like a strong deep story inside your gaming journey?
You like perfect pixel art? With terrific animations?
You like a lot of enemies? Each one with his mechanics?
You like bosses hard to beat to make your run competitive?
...
This is your game for sure! Dead Cells
I'm taking my journey in this game slowly, and I'm really obsessed with that :D
After 19 hours of game time. I’ve managed to complete the game once.
I think I’m just bad at this game.
This is a perfect roguelite. The combat possibilities feel endless, and the whole game is always very fluid. Both enemy and boss design are very good too, and all biomes feel pretty unique. And graphics and music are just gorgeous.
If thinking about buying this game, I suggest buying with all the DLCs included, because they really are worth it. The different routes add a lot to the replayability of the game.
And it can be frustating sometimes, but always follow the game's motto: "Kill, die, learn, repeat.". You're supposed to try and die a lot of times, and it might annoy you sometimes, but in the end it's very satisfying to see improvement. Maybe sometimes it can get a little repetitive, but trying out new styles/equipment/combos do the trick.
10/10
I've always enjoyed the combat, the aesthetics, the soundtrack, but it took me a while to get into this style of game where if I die I have to start from the beginning from zero. I love multiplayer games like Overwatch and play them on the daily but I don't really finish single player games or I haven't found ones that stuck except for Half Life and Gears of War.
This felt like the type of game I wanted to learn how to beat to challenge me and I'm really enjoying the moments of finally making it to the first boss.
And its little things too like being able to change health options from a carnivore aesthetic to a vegetarian one. I feel like the devs genuinely care about this game where Overwatch can definitely be frustrating at times having to relearn how to play Sombra multiple times for example.
At first, the game was a bit difficult to handle with all of the features and combat mechanics of the game, but once I got used to them, it now feels satisfying to me in a way that I rarely get when playing melee games. Definitely recommend!
Pleasantly surprised. I only purchased this game so I could play the 'Return to Castlevania', because I thought it was a port of the Castlevania game which it is not. However, I am not disappointed because this game is absolutely fantastic. I would highly recommend this game. The Castlevania DLC is an absolutely awesome level which gives me that nostalgic feel of the old Castlevania games.
Perfect game for those who love metroidvania games but with unlimited replayablity.
Note:I've had this game on both switch and ps5 so my playtime is longer then 41 hours.
Please and I mean please buy this game it's so good and probably one of if not the best rouge likes I've ever played(isaac is really close aswell)this game is so rewarding yet challenging at the same time the gameplay encourges you to take risk to get the best build possible in exchange your defense is like glass, the progression and feeling of satisfaction when you finally get that run when everything kinda just clicks together is amazing and with the tight controls and addicting combat it will make you keep coming back for more.
Good fun. Hard at first, very hard a few levels in, but then as you play more you'll find yourself "in the zone" and clearing levels with a graceful flow - very satisfying. Then those very hard levels become just hard, then they also become easy. Eventually they challenge becomes not to finish the level, but to finish it without taking a single hit.
Lots to explore and do. Great easter eggs. Responsive.
Something you can return to after a break and pick it up again in no time.
Easy to do a quick game (or progress your run to the next level), but also something you can lose hours in.
Worth every cent.
amazing would recomend the dlc adds loeds of content its great if your not weak
Dead Cells is an incredible rougelike with so much replayability with it's large variety of weapons every run feels different. The dlcs are completely worth it especially the castlevania one. I have 100% this game and I say if your looking for a fun and challenging game this is it. One more thing don't be afraid to turn on assist mode if necessary the games hard and it's there for a reason.
Days like these, I wish steam had an "in-between" option for reviewing games
TLDR: Great game, scumbag publishers.
Pre-review context/rant:
This game was originally developed by a team known as Evil Empire, who were a part of Motion Twin. Evil Empire worked on Dead Cells for over five years, and had planned updates all the way into 2025, however, Motion Twin told them to stop updating the game, then published the unfinished beta version of the update they were currently working on. Since then, most, if not all of the members of Evil Empire have left Motion Twin, thus leaving Dead Cells in the hands of people who never actually WORKED on the IP, only published it.
Motion Twin, however, still eagerly utilize their ownership of the Dead Cells IP, with collaborations, the boardgame and even going so far as using the phrase "From the creators of Dead Cells" in the trailer for their latest game, Windblown, despite the fact that NONE of the original creators of Dead Cells still work at Motion Twin, or have worked on Windblown.
The actual review:
Dead Cells itself is an amazing game, with incredible artwork, high-octane gameplay and great music. It's incredibly challenging, but also incredibly rewarding once you get past said challenges. I would Highly recommend it if you are a fan of fast-paced rogue-lites.
However, despite the incredible quality of the game, I would personally take caution towards anything that bears the "Motion Twin" name in the future, considering their behaviour regarding the Dead Cells IP.
The good:
- The gameplay
Running around the various levels and crushing enemies with the various weapons feels great.
- The music
The music in this game is amazing, one of the best soundtracks I've ever heard in a rogue-lite.
- The visuals
The game looks GORGEOUS, an incredible blend of 2.5d graphics with pixel art, which makes everything flow incredibly well, whilst still being very visually clear, making the game not feel cluttered, and making it easy to follow along with what's happening once you've played it for a bit.
The not-so good:
- The bosses
Whilst the levels themselves is usually very fun and satisfying, a lot of the bosses leave something to be desired. You just don't get the same feeling of speed and power that you get whilst fighting normal enemies when you're trapped in an arena fighting one of the bosses. That's not to say they're BAD, just not the best when compared to the rest of the gameplay is all.
- The publisher
I already went into detail regarding this in the upper part of the review.
[*]The grind
Probably the biggest issue I have with this game, ngl. A LOT of the contant in Dead Cells is locked behind "Boss cells", which you get by beating the final boss in a run. Each one of these Boss cells makes the game more difficult, and makes it so you can unlock new items. However, since item blueprints are random drops from enemies, that means you not only have to collect five Boss cells to reach the highest difficulty, and thus have all blueprints available in the pool. You ALSO have to GET those blueprints, which can take a lot of grinding if there's a specific one you want, but it refuses to drop. And once you get the blueprint, you have to spend regular cells to unlock the item itself from the blueprint.
It's a TON of grind if you wish to unlock everything in the game.
Conclusion:
I'd say Dead Cells is an incredibly fun, albeit very grindy game. You can get a ton of enjoyment out of it, and it is well worth the money. However, as it is published by scumbags, it makes it a bit harder for me to enjoy it.
Overall, I'd give Dead Cells an 8/10, and I sincerely hope that the ACTUAL creators of Dead Cells, Evil Empire, are doing good :3
Brutal yet fair 2D fast-paced platforming roguelike. The game is forgiving on lower difficulties, but requires rarely/never getting hit on higher difficulties. You can achieve that by killing enemies before they attack, but for some you'll need to jump, roll, or parry like you do in Dark Souls to avoid being hit.
This is by far the best metroidvania i have ever played in my existence. I have sunk hours into this game not just on steam but on playstaion, switch, and xbox. its that good I need it on multiple systems to play it as much as I can.
If you ask me which game i would recommend someone to start off for metroidvanias... of course i'd say the metroid games or castlevania, but this would be on the top of the list.
Play this, trust me this is worth it.
The came is a constant challenge and advancing feels like an accomplishment every time
This is more torture than c-sides and farewell from Celeste, it's one of the best games ever made, and the best roguelike ever. Recommend it 100%, worth every penny.
its really cool, but sometimes its hard. just like life. life is hard too sometimes. recently i have gotten diagnosed with nephroptosis and maybe my destiny will become roaming this barren earth with one kidney slightly lower than another (around 2-4mm) and experiencing a dull, but tolerable pain in my right side. we all really should ponder, gazing at the lead painted welkin, and wend home, for tis our mortal coil, that dont belong there, where the spirits roam
The game hits you with a prompt to purchase the DLC within the first starting area. You can literally hit a dead end with a prompt to purchase DLC within the first few minutes of playing and have to turn around if you don't want to pony up. Looks greedy and really takes away from the experience. If the devs wanted to do DLC, that's fine. But put it at the end of the game, not in the starting area.
Very good game with a lot of passion. Every item is unique and pair well with each other to create a great experience.
At first, I found the difficulty level quite steep, but it didn’t take long to get the hang of it. Once I get used to the mechanics, the game becomes incredibly satisfying to play. Using a gamepad makes the experience much smoother and more enjoyable. I’ve come across several places I still haven’t figured out how to access but that’s all fun.
amazing game, phenomenal movement and gameplay. Truly a sight to behold, can't recommend it enough
Yeah, I'm new to this game, I buy it in Winter Sale when it sale for 50% , I Have seen this game before so I decide to buy it, and wow It's so good, I think it is the best Roguelike games I have played, I love the pixel art ,smooth animation and great combat gameplay of this game. can't stop playing this game LOL
Such a crazy mad game. The sheer amount of time it took me to get the second boss cell......
Still worth it!
This game is a fast paced, high octane 80's and 90's style metroidvania game. it seems like there is always something new within the game, and the game rewards your persistence. It also is a short love note to video games in general - easy to recommend
Very fun game but it is super grindy so if your looking for a game to play for a little while then this is it
The combat feels amazing, the movement is incredible, and the gameplay loop is perfect. The only possible negative thing I can say about Dead Cells is that it can be frustrating when you die really far into a level.
10/10 so fun I can’t help but go back when I’m idling between games. Combat is simple in the way that you can only do so much with the 4 items & necklace you can have at any given time.
The progression means so much in this game, once you unlock a new skill it refreshes the next run making this game feel fresh nearly every new dive. I don’t typically enjoy side scrollers but I am hooked on this game.
The collaborations are seamless and well integrated.
Art/graphics are wonderful. I play on the steam deck and it feels like it’s made for it.
An absolutely wonderful experience I can’t believe I waited so long to pick this title up.
9/10 - Very good game with very smooth and challenging combat and pretty good endless replayability
Stupidly hard/frustrating/rewarding game. Be warned, highly addictive
Jogo muito bom, mas é uma pena ter que gastar mais dinheiro em dlcs do que no próprio jogo
Such an underrated rouge-lite, it deserves so much more love and attention than it gets.
Hard but really, really fun. Battle, die, learn, repeat. lots of different bad guy types tons of weapons, costumes and mix and match heads. will take forever to get it all and "beat" the game and then you will play it some more lol, 8 outta 10.
A bit expensive i think for most people (and me) so i suggest buying it at a discount. other than that a very good indie game.
Not a fan of Metroid-like games and action platformers... yet I am immensely enjoying this game! Visual design, audio, gameplay - everything is BRILLIANT! <3
I really wanna love this game, and I honestly do not know why I don't! I get tired of it so fast, and its not like I just do not enjoy roguelikes because I love ETG, Hades, Inscryption, Risk of Rain, and much more. I think this is a quality game aside from my opinion, but it never pulled me in like other roguelikes I've fallen in love with in the past.
claramente um dos dead cells já feitos na história dos games
absolute cinema watching this firey dude die over and over again.11/10 would play again
