Resident Evil Revelations is an intriguing entry in the franchise, one that tries to balance classic survival horror elements with a more action-oriented modern approach.
While it has its moments, the overall experience feels uneven, with flashes of brilliance overshadowed by some lackluster choices...
The game starts strong with its initial ship segment aboard the Queen Zenobia.
This setting is easily the highlight of the experience, evoking a sense of claustrophobia and dread that harkens back to the series’ survival horror roots.
Exploring the eerie, water-drenched corridors of the ship reminded me of "Cold Fear", a similarly atmospheric game that made excellent use of its isolated oceanic setting!
For a while, the game captures the kind of creeping tension that fans of the franchise crave.
Unfortunately, this focus on suspense doesn’t last.
As the story branches out to different characters and locations, the atmosphere gives way to action-heavy sequences that dilute the tension built in the opening hours.
While the variety in environments and characters adds scope to the narrative, it comes at the cost of the intimate horror that made the ship so compelling.
Gameplay is a mixed bag.
The return of limited ammo and resources adds a welcome layer of strategy, but the controls and combat mechanics can feel clunky at times, especially during more frantic encounters.
The enemy design is also hit-or-miss, while some creatures are genuinely creepy, others come across as uninspired and repetitive.
The story, while serviceable, leans heavily into melodrama and convoluted conspiracies that are hard to take seriously.
Jill Valentine is a welcome protagonist, but the supporting cast is less memorable, with some characters feeling more like caricatures than fully realized individuals.
On the technical side, the game looks great for its time, especially considering its origins on handheld platforms.
The lighting and environmental details are standout features, but the game’s pacing issues and reliance on action undermine the strong first impression.
In the end, Resident Evil Revelations is a game of two halves.
The initial ship sequence is fantastic, delivering a chilling and immersive experience that fans of classic survival horror will appreciate.
But as the game progresses, it loses its way, becoming just another action-heavy entry in the series.
It’s worth playing for the Queen Zenobia sections alone, but don’t expect the rest of the game to maintain the same level of quality.
The graphics are pretty bland and basic, but keep in mind that this was originally a Nintendo 3DS game! For a shorter 3DS game, this is fairly good! It's not as long, complex, and refined as other games of the franchise but for what it is, it's fairly good.
It's got all a the hallmarks of the Resident evil - campy dialogue, rocket launchers, some tired reused plot about a special virus, a Victorian mansion setting with with double stairs (even if you're on a ship!), and lots and lots of gratuitous sexual tension and innuendos!
Surprisingly it all comes together fairly well! It's FAST, much more straightforward than other RE games, even WITH the backtracking. However things develop fast and there are some good twists and turns for good measure. The story is a 7/10 but interesting enough to keep things fresh. The episodic nature disjointed perspective of the plot being told by different characters and flashbacks are a new take on the traditional linear RE plot. You to experience the story from the past, the present, and through the eyes of all your favorite characters! It's novel and it works.
It's definitely worth a play if you're searching for a light experience. It's not a masterclass, but it's a fun time.
Peak featuring Jill in more spandex than you'd even need
Great spin-off game for RE
Love the gameplay, graphics , story telling features, Jill and Jessica, the headshots. Cool game.
They could've just make this game a tv show rather than videogame. as a game its bad, as a tv show it would've been better, but its a 3ds game so that makes sense why its gameplay and mecahnics feel off, for 3ds its a magnificent 3ds game, but as Resident evil game, its not the best but not the worst either. story is short, characters are not memorable and antagonist is bad. get it on sale or avoid it, it does add up some character development to Jill and Chris.
The controls are pretty rough. It FEELS like you're emulating a 3DS game. Multiplayer is also dead.
That said the campaign is off the walls Hideo Kojima style absurd. One of the more fun stories in the series. Absolutely worth a 5 dollar sale price. Took me just under 7 hours to beat on normal difficulty.
Great game great raid mode in coop.
This isn't even a game, it's a failure with pixels. How can Resident Evil 1 released in 2002 be better than this "game" which released in 2012?
Short answer: It's a cash grab with the Resident Evil label.
Long answer:
There is simply 0 effort put into the game. Besides the graphics that are ok to look old, the movement is hilariously bad, simply moving side to see looks like you slide around and that's the most basic thing you need to have in a game. It's like making an FPS, but instead of a 3D gun model you have a PNG, glaring af, always there to remember you how little effort was put into it. On top of that there is no localized damage or enemy reacting to getting shot. The walking and attack animations of the enemies look like low res GIFs, especially the regenerator enemy you see at the start. Again, Resident evil 1 a game that released a whole 10 years earlier didn't have ANY of those issues, they simply didn't give a f this time around, I'll be refunding.
If you want to see for yourself then play the first "episode" it's about 10 minutes long and you have to do a MMORPG "kill 5 things" quest, I'm not even joking... have fun scanning those blobs of meat.
PS: Revelations 2 is miles better than this, I actually recommend you play that one instead and skip this one.
Amazing game and story. Worth playing for sure! Only thing is the movement, can be a bit weird in the beginning but you can surely get used to it!
It's a slight improvement from RE 4..... Strafing is allowed! wooo! And they added in a way to dodge attacks too, wooo! But no sprint/run? Still prefer the inventory system from RE 4. Why is there still no FOV slider? You got the FOV so close behind Jill that I may have discovered a new kink whilst I playing.
And what's with special ops team bringing in a shitty flash light? They should at least be bringing the imalent ms18 and light the bastard up!
The weapon selection was ok.....although it would be nice if I had more time with my python....and one shotting monsters.... :P The weapon mod system was a nice touch, would be better if I could attach the same kind to stack effects..... :D
Aw man the boss at the end was so bullet spongy.....what happened to my RPG I saved back the monster squid scene??? And why does the RPG not register in the weapons chest??? I could have equiped myself with 3 RPGs and killed the boss in a few seconds....but nooooooo........ Where's my chicago typewriter and infinite launcher? They would have been nice here....
I think this game is nice with a decent story. It was nothing too exciting or major, but it was fun while it lasted. Resident Evil Revelations is a game worth trying because when you are in a state in which you wonder how you can pass the time then this is the answer. If you are a horror fan you will find some jump scares scattered here and there with a somewhat satisfying shooting experience. All in all, I'd give this game 7/10 and would recommend to others as being worth a shot.
Cheesy and B-movie quality with some cringey dialogue and line delivery. However, very fun and a decent Resident Evil romp. I'd say the identity crisis this game has hurts it more than it benefits (whiplash between Jill's more nautical horror sections with ammo conservation; Chris's shoot em up stages; the two dumb and dumber Keith and Quinn duo who has the worst performances and cringe inducing wisecracks and oversexualised comedy). Still, I had fun with this and will include it in replays. Raid mode is great but I can't be bothered with replaying everything for added unlocks. Not difficult but difficulty spikes for bosses. Get on sale.
"Mayday, mayday, this is the Queen Zenobia..."
For something that started out as a Nintendo 3DS exclusive game, Revelations has no business being nearly as good as it actually is.
Back when the Resident Evil franchise was focused all-in on action, Revelations dared turn that dial down, and focus once again on what made this franchise... Survival Horror.
This game is incredibly moody and atmospheric. Specially the parts on the ship, which is thankfully most of the game, and it's where it shines the most. The gameplay is good, the enemies are incredibly unsettling. I cannot stress enough how terrifying some of these creatures are, just wait until you meet the Communications Officer... The characters and plot are quite interesting, though unfortunately the franchise never really followed up on some of the loose ends.
If you just ignore some of the dumb action scenes (I swear there's a part in this game where you kill up to 30 Hunters at once), and the... Questionable character design (Rachel, anyone?), this game is honestly outstanding. Well worth it.
pretty nice overall, enjoyed the story and setting, monsters on inferno soak up bullets tho. fun raid mode 7/10
Jill is my wife and I get to do but stuff!!
Pretty entertaining.
Decent story, nice action, not a lot of survival horror.
One of the best final bosses in RE history imho.
There is also Raid mode, which is pretty fun!
You get to play mainly as Jill Valentine but you will also get to control other characters like Chris Redfield.
Totally recommended to any Resi fan.
The Revelations games are like hidden gems!
This game is scary af I hate it. Playing it on inferno while knowing nothing about this series is the right way to play
No FOV settings. The default camera view is so fucking narrow it's unplayable. Also user-made FOV mods were killed when Capcom updated the game in 2019. Wondering why Capcom didn't add a simple FOV slider for PC release? I don't know, nobody knows. What the fuck, Capcom?
This game was a blast to play 'Story-wise' not so much 'Game-play wise' as the controls are a little wonky but holy crap the twists and turns the story made along the way had me gasping and my jaw dropping. The story is such an over the top cinematic piece that it was just so amazing to experience. Maybe a little lack luster at the beginning but as you grow closer to the halfway mark in the game it gets so good!! Honestly surprised with how much I enjoyed it given at the beginning I thought it would suck. Well done Capcom.
The jankest writing and most unlikable characters I have EVER heard or seen in any RE Game.
The plot of Resident Evil in this game is quite unique, adopting a style similar to the prequel of American TV shows, and the plot is also conventional. It tells the story of Jill and Chris in the early days of BSAA before the 5th birthday. However, the only downside is that the PC optimization is not very good. For example, every time we change the scene in the elevator, there will be a lag, and in the assault mode, we can invite your friends to work together to achieve success
great game, graphics could be better but considering its a eds port that's fine.
i own this game on all my consoles, it's that good
despite this, it really is a full on resident evil experience, cutting no corners to deliver.
9/10 game buy it
Pretty good story. I really only like RE 1-4 but this one was enjoyable.
i don't really know how to describe this game much it's fun but the mechanics are very dated ik this was orginally a ds game but still the controls are very weird. It has a good story tho
Fun game all throughout, even if graphically outdated by now. Surprisingly solid story with a lot of world building. Main con is that the "dodge ability", if it can even warrant being called that, is awful. So don't go into this expecting a specific dodge command like many other RE titles.
Not the best game in the series but it got some good points. The story is average. Not bad but not so good. Also the raid mode is fun with a friend but I played most of it solo and asked help for only couple of achievements with an old good player and it was fun co-op. Anyways, not a must but helps pass a good chunk of time.
Great story great game
Dont buy expecting to play through with a friend. Coop tag feels a little of a lie.
This game is good for a couple of reasons. It's centered around Jill searching for Chris and is set before Resident Evil 5, making it ideal if you're excited about the Resident Evil 3 Jill epilogue file. Unlike Resident Evil 5, which opens with Jill having been fake killed. Another thing that's good about this game is it was a return to the franchise's roots in horror. Sensing survival horror's popularity in the 2010s, CAPCOM decided to try and re-introduce horror to the then purely action franchise through parallel running alongside the purely action titles, so they made this and Resident Evil 6. This is what eventually led to the masterpiece that was Resident Evil 7: Bio Hazard, which saved survival horror from being taken over by silly mascot horror games that are only there to have YouTube videos made about them.
overall these re games (revelations 1 and 2, and re 6) are just not fun. You feel like you're shots are not really meaningful because the enemy animations when they get hit are just recycled and look so blah. can't play it anymore.. uninstalling.
I missed this entry back in the day on 3DS and lately I've been wanting to go back and play all of the RE games I missed. It was a fun little game but I couldn't figure out how to dodge for the life of me.
Very much enjoyed it!! The map feels massive and the combat is fun enough (albeit the dodging mechanic doesnt really work if you dont time it perfectly lol). The story is cool and it's always great to play as Jill, although she doesn't say much besides "incredible!" or "this looks bad..." lol. It has very cool segments and some lowkey frustrating bosses, but you'll get better as the game goes on since you'll pretty much find them everywhere and anywhere in the ship. It jumpscared me a couple of times ngl lol.
Overall, fun, cheap, looks great for its time and Jill Valentine.
Would recommend.
After eleven years, i finally bought the game today with a discount. I played a free version in my cousin's house in 2013. It was cool. The control is not very good but ok. I like the combat and environment. The ship reminds me the movie, Ghost ship 2002. It's an old RE4 style resident evil game. I like it. though we have RE2, RE3 and RE4 remake, but the revelation deserves another remake!
Fantastic oldschool RE game, short but good.
great game, god tier 3ds game. needs full 4k support. other than that amazing game worth getting on sale in a heartbeat
Great Action, Fast paced mix with slow, Great character design, Play it all the time.
My only regret is that i didn´t play it sooner
Honestly, I liked it a lot, the story is a roller coaster of emotions and the gameplay, although it's a little rough, something to be expected knowing that it's a 3DS game, it's very enjoyable.
The game manages to make a good mix of survival horror elements of the saga with action sequences and achieves a very entertaining experience.
Awesome game...graphics are great and the gameplay is fun. All the fun parts of resident evil without inventory management
TL; DR This is without a doubt my favourite Resident Evil spinoff title, did my playtime give that away? It has everything I want, crazy conspiracies, fun encounters and enemies, heavy-handed literary references, and I, I can still fight.
I crave spinoff titles for my favourite IPs.
Note this is about the rise of the BSAA, taking place just before the events of Resident Evil 5: Lost in Nightmares
Story
Jill, and Parker arrive at the Queen Zenobia, the derelict luxury cruiser, she disappeared a year ago, but now she has resurfaced, and along with her comes the resurgence of Il Veltro, the bioterrorists responsible for the Terragrigia Panic and the criminals who managed to kidnap Chris Redfield…
Chris is somewhere on the Queen Zenobia, but as you track him down the BSAA discovers that not all things are as they seem, it is time to learn the truth.
So: Abandon hope all ye who enter here.
Revelations is an episodic title, and it exploits that to frame the entire things as a TV series, it ends on cliffhangers, it recaps the previous instalment, and it wants to keep you guessing.
Sometimes they go a bit overboard with the twists and turns, but it is fun, it is enjoyable to see new revelations each episode that make you second guess the motives of your colleagues, and corporate rivals. What is the truth of Queen Zenobia? Is everything distraction and misdirection? You will have to play the next episode to find out!
This more focused and self-contained story makes the setting seem larger, that things are happening outside of the mainline games, and that the villains have had lasting effects on the world around them. It does not need to do more than a couple of references here and there to succeed in that because it introduces characters and groups to make the world feel more vibrant, and alive.
Resident Evil is a series filled with groups with nonsensical ambitions, but Il Veltro is one of the more bizarre ones, they are led by a former university lecturer who opposed the construction of a floating city because it is powered by solar energy, and included cooperation between the EU and the US, or something, but despite that it comes across as intimidating, and its leadership comes across as almost charismatic. He is dangerous, and he has the means the cause terrible devastation if left alone.
I also love much they quote Dante’s Inferno, it is so heavy handed and not at all subtle that it becomes amazing, especially how it relates to Veltro in particular, they are Italian ultranationalists, and they are led by someone who has read at least that one book, is he using Inferno because he is Italian, and it has sick lines? Or because it is the only book he knows? Who can say!
Presentation
The Queen Zenobia is a beautiful ship complete with an ornate dining hall, a casino, and sleeping quarters, it is also an abandoned seafaring vessel with dilapidated corridors, and spartan sections dedicated to the crew.
It is a great place to explore, there is a lot of things to see, and you never get bored with it. Not only is the Queen Zenobia a complete world onto itself but you get even more variety, as they let you explore the futuristic Terragrigia and freezing mountain paths during certain episodes.
Most of these areas are filled with Oozes, and other T-Abyss mutants, and as you can hear from the name, they ooze, they are slimy, disgustingly wet, and they have this mouth proboscis that is outright revolting. They also draw some inspiration from deep-sea creatures, who are generally strange enough as is, not only that but they stagger along in a very unsettling way, that makes fighting them very creepy.
In terms of Resident Evil designs they are among the most inspired, and disconcerting.
The OST is mostly there to heighten this impression, complete with these creepy disharmonic loops, solemn pianos, and chilling violins, it makes normal exploration unsettling and serves well to increase the tension of combat.
There are a couple of standout tracks, O vendetta di Dio is exceedingly memorable, it feels imperious, and epic, like you are an ant, and how dare an ant stand in their way?
Yet it is quite funny because the title track Revelations is also hard to forget, not only because it is the recap song, and you hear it a dozen times, but because it is smooth, it immediately sets you in the mood of a thriller and the deep seas.
Gameplay
As one might expect Revelations plays a lot like the other 3rd person Resident Evil titles. You have a gun, you have melee, you collect things and solve a couple of puzzles.
What sets Revelations apart is the multitude of player characters, the scanner you will need to properly stock up on resources and the expansive world that was absent after Resident Evil 4.
Stalking the halls of the Queen Zenobia, dealing with problems as they arise, slowly uncovering the mystery, all while fighting off a swarm of Oozes is awesome. There are ambushes all over, encounters generally designed to catch you off-guard, and a couple of victory laps. Enemies are varied, mixed together to complement each other’s strengths, and cover their weaknesses, which ensures that the encounters are always different, and challenge you in different ways, meaning you will never get bored.
Add a couple of entirely optional areas with neat rewards, some great bosses (sometimes featuring adds to heighten to the stress), unique encounter designs for each of the four player characters which let the developers experiment without detracting from the main experience and you are left with a thrilling and amazing game.
Yet, what I find most satisfying about Revelations is the follow-up attacks, which should be obvious for anyone who enjoys the 3rd person entries, since they have always felt impactful, but now they let you charge them up, letting you build anticipation and power before delivering a devastating strike, and knocking them down. It is hard to describe how thrilling it can be to deliver a fully charged attack on a boss, so it is something that is best experience for oneself.
They also gave us a dodge mechanic, and it feels great to dodge a powerful attack, it is perfect to get out of tight spots, but it almost feels overpowered, once you get the hang of it. Of course, it is nearly mandatory on higher difficulties, cause if you run out of ammunition you are left with the knife, and trying to deal with a Scagdead, is um, not recommended without dodging.
You fall into a rhythm, tapping an enemy on their weak spots, weaving past other enemies to knock out a threat in one fell strike, as stated, it is satisfying, and these core mechanics are more than enough to carry the entire experience.
RAID MODE
I love Raid mode, most of my playtime is in Raid mode, and it is not difficult to fathom why.
It is an optional mode that builds on the combat, giving you increased customisability, and a whole host of levels of varying degrees of difficulty.
It utilizes the enemy roster in ways that were not reasonable in the campaign, adding challenges that were not narratively possibly during the story, and changing bosses up to make them even more imposing, Raid mode is great fun with a friend, but even solo is enjoyable.
The absolute peak of it, is the Ghost Ship, a veritable gauntlet of enemies, literally the entire Queen Zenobia at once, filled with every enemy and every boss you can think of. It is not only filled with difficult encounters, and exciting rewards, but it is also an endurance test, a drain on your resources, and the closest Revelations ever comes to properly forcing you to manage your resources.
Play Ghost Ship, it is great, if you are prepared.
It's not the best game, but it's a good game.
If they dropped the forced comedy aspect this could've been a pretty spooky game but then you play as these two fucking clowns that ruin any atmosphere it could've had (and I still loved them, they're funny even if I can't remember their names).
Jill's parts are the highlight, everything else is ok.
I hate the Genesis thingy mechanic, just give me my items I don't want to have to pull out this dumb thing in every single room and corner to be able to collect stuff.
7/10
75/100
This part of the series is special to me and I really like it. The game is small but the fact that it is not big and long does not necessarily have to be an indicator of quality because I think it represents good quality and playing it gave me a lot of pleasure. I rate the game positively and recommend it to fans of the series.
It's not my favorite in the series, but its a good game. I have fun playing through the game over the challenge it presented here and the action. I found the controls to be wokey and movements take time to get used to. I do like the enemies in the game, but wish more variety is included. The gameplay is pretty good and fun for the most part, but isn't memorable enough to play through again. Overall it's a good entry in the franchise
Goated game.
best resident evil story imo
Aiming is unsteady. Hopelessly unstable.
"Revelations has a lot to offer fans of the series and players looking for a more evenly paced, thoughtful shooter."
8.75/10 – Game Informer
Except Resident evil is a SURVIVOR HORROR not a shooter it shouldnt be a shooter focus ,
I really enjoyed this game. Did not expect to. Despite its age, it feels very smooth, though the strafing movement is a bit awkward.
