Hey everyone!
We would like to thank the thousands of players all across the world who participated in the beta. Without you, this update would not have been possible.
We have to say though, we were very surprised with the amount of feedback we were able to gather in this short period. Shortly after the beta went live, we surpassed our previous all-time peak of players during the game's launch in *2015*!
Not only that, but in the short amount of time the beta was running, there were even a couple tournaments being run for the game as well!
All in all, this was a great success for everyone involved. The community was able to come together and teach new players the ropes, while KOF veterans across the globe duked it out.
Heck, maybe even some of you pulled off Geese's Deadly Rave mid-match. Whatever the level, we're confident all players had a lot of fun during the beta.
But, all good things must come to an end...
However, the good news is that now Code Mystics are going to focus their time on further improving the game to have it in tip-top shape come release.
We will keep everyone posted when the update is going live. Until then, be sure to hit up the various KOF discords out there and hone your skills because KOF2002UM will be back and ready to go before you know it!

ABOUT THE GAME
The second title in the UM series is a fully upgraded version of KOF 2002, a masterpiece of the KOF series deserving of a place honor along with KOF ’98. Based on THE NESTS CHRONICLES, this title includes the most characters of any title in KOF history. All graphics and background music have been completely redone and the game balance has also been extensively redesigned. New moves have been added and others have been brought back, meaning that players can enjoy battling it out for longer than ever.

Good looking pixel art, great music, amazing character designs, the controls, moves and animations are so good, its not my favorite KOF game, but still is very good, one of the best fighting games out there. Also it has achievements and steam cards so you can customize your profile with wallpapers and so while creating badges.

One of my favorite in the entire series. I had this game, and KOF 2003 for PS2 when it originally came out. I probably put 100 hours into that game.
Game is still fun to play today. The King of Fighters game go on sale all the time. Grab it the next time you see it for cheap, you'll be happy you did. Solid fighting game from start to finish.

All jokes aside yes. It has a good roster, great soundtrack and some of if not the best gameplay in a King of Fighters. But if you're new to KOF and want to get into the game, i'd recommend KOF XV as it is a lot more beginner friendly.

It's essentially a bigger, better version of the original 2002. A good place to start in the KOF series if you wanna seriously commit to this franchise.

Huge roster & rollback netcode for dirt cheap makes this an easy recommend for those that want to see what KoF is about. Only wish there was a quick way to select a presaved team but otherwise easy recommend.

I've owned this game for years and never got an achievement on it. And only played it for 3 hours.
The very positive reviews are probably because it is actually a VERY good port. Of what was a very good game many years ago on the original hardware. Hardware a mate of mine owned with loads of games for it.
Worth the recommendation simply for the fact that every time you win.. It calls you a 'weiner..'
this is a good fighting game but if you are looking for something beginner friendly, try one of the more recent kof games. This is my first kof game and combos are not easy, further more it is hard to find beginner guides on youtube. If you are not new to kof and tight combo timings does not bother you, this is a fun game.
Excellent roster and mechanics. Easy to play and very fun. The soundtrack and graphics are top notch and everything about this game feels aesthetic and wonderful. I find the game wonderful in every aspect.

Everything a KOF game show be.
From the huge roster, great soundtrack, revamped characters, everything in this game makes it one of the best versions of KOF ever made. Also proof that fighting games don't need a story mode to be a complete product.
it's the ultimate edition of one of the most recent The King OF fighters for the Neo geo platform , this port offer a few more additional gameplay mode like survival. (there is also 2003 and I think the rest moved to the atomiswave arcade platform after this)
very large cast of characters , same classic sprites artworks then old 2D KOF , solid controls , great arcade mode that give and a difficulty setting.
it's really a great KOF for casual players , the A.I on the easiest difficulty is fair and easy to mow down for as long as you can execute a few specials moves , the only annoyance being the last boss fight which you can still cheese with the service options.

Originally got it cuz an artist used sound effects from it (badass) also the game is so nostalgic!! (wasnt even born in 2002) BUT YOU GET WHAT I MEAN I LIKE OLD STYLE GAMES AND ESPECIALLY FIGHTING ONES ONGGGGG ATHENA IS MY FAVORITE ONE AND IORI AND JUST MANY MORE RAHHH. W game!!

I generally give SNK games a thumbs up in most scenarios. This has been one of those scenarios.
If you love fighting games, great character designs, and have an appreciate for awesome spritework and high execution barrier, then you'll feel right at home with KOF 2002 UM.

im a casual fighting game player and this is the GOAT for me. i have no friends who play fighting games, nor am i brazillian or a discord sweat, so the fact that just fighting the AI got me this many hours is a testament to how enjoyable this game is. mind you, all you get for singleplayer content is arcade, survival mode and some trials. but with a roster and system like this, it's enough.
the characters are insanely fun to play and have very inventive movesets without feeling gimmicky or contrived. i think a good few hours of my playtime might just be trying new characters in training mode, doing their inputs and thinking 'thats sick'. if you sometimes find street fighter a little too dry and restrictive, but anime fighters too absurd and indulgent, then kof is the perfect middle ground.
the system is fast, expressive and fluid, while still grounded and not a combojerk at a casual level (especially since even simple confirms are harder here than many other fighting games)
you can just do cool shit in this game. no sitting in the corner playing rock paper scissors where rock is +1 frame and scissors is +2; you can have a real, reactive fight using a cool kit as you would in any other action game. theres nothing here that feels like 'oh, this move is fun, but it only works in the middle of a combo/in this specific setup'. you can go full 100% salmonella RAW in this game and it works.
the AI is amazing; it's like every other match you get at least a few seconds of TAS choreographed level back-and-forth. it feels more like a playable shonen anime than any of the 'anime fighters'. there are also a LOT of slow, human reactable special moves, which are both satisfying to land and to evade. the boss AI is bullshit but thats just how these games roll.
sure you can cheese the AI like any other FG, but you can also stinger spam in devil may cry. more than any FG ive played, i don't just want to play for survival or score in this, but for style. switch up specials instead of spamming them, sprint from fullscreen into a jumping kick, shorthop a sweep like a martial arts movie, dodge roll an attack instead of guarding it, or better yet go for some crazy shit like geese's counters or angel's twirl dodge. its just so intrinsically fun to engage with, and i have no idea or care as to how it all fits together in balancing and competitive play.
the game has online, but it may as well not. even in the much more populated fightcade version of '02, youd have to sink triple digit hours just to stand a chance, as is the case with any fighting game not called third strike or Streetkken Gear: The Newest One. this is dead online unless you're willing to offer a substantial slice of your sacred time on this earth to join mexicos finest and actually get to play the real video game.
but do not let that deter you, because it isn't relevant and will become even less relevant as the years pass.
kof is a blast, and this is arguably the best version of it. if you have someone to play with even better, but its not required. i guess the point of this review is that fighting games don't have a shelf-life if they're as good as this one, and people often forget how good they can be even casually, in the rush to keep up with the skill floor of the games in active rotation.

kof2002 um is a strange beast, I dunno how to classify it... is it a remaster or a remake? Irregardless of that, it is the same kof2002 but with lots of characters from all the series sagas up to that point, tons o fun, robust training mode... It is almost perfect, except the fact that the ps2 version of this game, launched around the 2010`s had the original 2002 as a bonus and this version does not have that...
But it is still a blast. I recommend it with both my eyes closed.
the ui could be better
and it "feels" a bit unfinished, partially because there is no music in the menu screen
the gameplay is good, and there are so many characters, the visuals are mostly charming too
possibly the best kof game, but not too popular so it can be hard to find people to play with
