Fun side scrolling button smasher! Doesn't require a ton of thought just nice and relaxing gameplay
combat is fun, combos are cool, writing is good, jokes are funny
This game didn't recognize my controler and playing with keyboard is just too frustrating.
It's a fun and interesting game, but being stuck on some jumps for tens of minutes is just no.
Solid metroidvania! The combat honestly felt really good. I think this game has less of an emphasis on exploration, and more on the gameplay, but the gameplay felt really good. And the exploration and world map serve their purpose really well. This probably doesn't hold a candle to some of the top metroidvanias, and I don't see it becoming anyone's favorite, but I think metroidvania fans should still give it a go.
Simple metroidvania type game. Very easy to pick up and the story is pretty straight forward. I especially enjoy all the easter eggs throughout the game referencing other games. Solid game to pass the time.
Guacamelee is a great franchise no matter which entry you decide to play, however i only recommend the Gold Edition for completionists that want to experience the franchise to it's fullest, or if you're looking to replay the first game after playing the STCE version already. Guacamelee 1 Gold Edition is definitely the hardest entry on the franchise, both STCE and Guacamelee 2 are easier games.
If you're looking to casually start the franchise and only want to play through the first game once, i highly recommend playing STCE instead of this one.
Also while playing my game froze 3 times demanding me to close it completely, not sure what was going on, there's a risk of losing some progress because of this although rare since the game saves constantly.
Great game, but I think Super Turbo Championship Edition is better.
This first game is definitely worth playing though. It took me a few years to complete the first game, but it was fun. It just gets complicated or confusing sometimes if you take a break and then come back to the game and forget how to attack certain enemies or pull off moves you need, a way to come back and remember things easier would be nice.
Only having one save file was a big downside to this game though and was very frustrating.
There were a lot of little cosmetic changes in Super Turbo, Gold Edition is still worth playing if you want to see the game in its original form.
Not only does it play great, but it looks timeless, and even has a cute little story to go with it's campaign.
I'm not a personal fan of fighting games or brawlers, but this one just does it for me.
I really enjoy Metroidvanias, but this one isn't for me. I like the various mechanics, but after a while, the mechanics are required to be used in rapid succession to progress. I literally cannot continue playing the game because my hands and brain will not permit me to do fireball moves while flipping between realities and jumping let to right, etc. It's all too much for me.
That said, it's a great game, and if what I wrote above sounds exactly like what you want for a Metroidvania, by all means, please, enjoy. But I can't, which is why I'm not going to recommend it. But I'll still give it 5 stars.
Came back after years. Want to 100% Tons of fun. Excellent gameplay.
Just avoid yourself another garbage platformer that doesn't know what it wants to be. Theres a reason Super Mario sticks to non combat platforming because you end up with this. Both combat and platforming suck so just pick one!
A wonderful metroidvania game about a luchador battling a great evil to save the world. I think this game has great art, fun gameplay, and does not overstay its welcome. If you like games like this, it's worth it! If you don't normally play games of this style, there's a good chance you'll enjoy it as well. It deserves to be played!

It's a cool take on classic metroidvania type gameplay. The graphics are charming, and there are some amusing meme references in the game. The controls are fine. I don't think it really truly excels in any way in the gameplay department though and I have little desire to replay it after having beaten it.

Fun Metroidvania with its own twists, really good overall.
This is still a good game, I simply want to direct people to the Super Turbo Championship Edition. That version is basically the same plus a little extra.

Some negative reviews seem unfair. Yeh Super Turbo Championship has more stuff but buying either one will give you a copy of the other.
