This game is Divine. A Divine classic and more than that, Divine Divine Classic.
Diablo meets Baldur's Gate 1+2 meets Elder Scrolls (or more likely, Ultima, specifically 7). Diablo style combat with BG style pause and cue actions, and ES/Ultima open world/inventory management. An automap that you can create your own notations, a story that is both silly and serious when it needs to be. I had way more fun playing this than I expected. Fantastic quest design. And playing the BGs and early Divinities on the way to BG3, I see a lot of trademark Larian here, as well as the other games that they love. The main downside is getting the damn game to run. Mods help, Software mode helps, but still expect crashes on a Win10 machine. Save often. I also wouldn't go to resolutions above what it was natively programmed for. Both for stability, and to have the models in a resolution that can be appreciated, some good spritework here.
A pretty addictive hack and slash if I do say so myself. The enemies that litter this world will have you coming for more and more until you can overpower them easily and move onto more difficult enemies. I find this kind of progression to be quite satisfying.
However, the story and story progression are an entirely different beast. I don't know what it is with Larian studios, but their quests and world building just always seem to be lacking. The humorous situations are sprinkled in generously, and that seems to be the main mode the writing is in. Unfortunately, this leads to not taking any of it seriously enough to want to figure out what the hack mountain is actually going on in this game.
I'm totally confused and have no idea how to progress in the story. Worse yet, I'm finding things out of order because all I care about is getting stronger. So, I don't know what do.
That said, there's a very addictive gameplay loop here if that's what you're looking for. Hack, baby, hack!
Some players may encounter a graphics bug where the player model and other objects or walls turn black or black + rainbow color overlay which can make the game crash,
to fix you must restart your computer from the windows menu, i don't know how or why, but it fixes it
i love this game
Couldn't get into it, but seems like a good time for something out of 2002. Pretty dated by modern standards, playing a mage was not fun at all. Lots of backtracking. If you like diablo-likes, then it might be worth a try.
One of the best game soundtracks of all time. Great game from Larian. Just wish they would "remaster" it for current systems.
Divine Divinity is a fantastic experience of an old school action RPG. It's got funny writing, a fun world to explore, and combat that almost isn't that frustrating! Definitely up there with other greats like Fallout for old isometric RPGs.
this is the greatest game of all time
Stuttering, lagging, fps issues, crashes, technical hell, community mods improve but do not fix anything, waste of time and money, stay away! - played it back in the day on crt monitor and windows xp/7 it was working fine and it was a good game, sadly it does not work on modern operating system, components and 43 inch 4k monitor
is a tough game to play at first you gonna be carefull and go slow talk to npcs and read what they have to say cause they either say important stuff or sometimes you have to use your words correctly for something bad happend but once you get the hand of it is a lot of fun

If you love BG3 you'll love this. Has an awesome retro feel to itl.
great game
If you dont mind the quest breakers and the fact that some shii is buggy, it's pretty good.
Have you ever thought: "Damn, our lives in our modern society are pointless and the goverment works hard to undermine us every chance they have"? Well, Divine Divinity might make you forget that for a bit.
Like all "Diablo-likes", the combat progression is quite brainless and with enough tinkering the endgame is a cakewalk with all defenses at maximum. Despite that there's fun to be had and this one has a good story, interesting world and some quirky and memorable characters.
The game tries to be a mix of Baldur’s Gate and Diablo, yet doesn’t quite succeed to be as good as those games in their respective subgenres. There are also several bugs and balance issues that can become frustrating. Only pick this up if you’re a fan of the Divinity series or Larian Studios.
One of the best retro RPG games out there. The attention to Lore and the atmospheric music captivates you and drags you in. Remember that magical feeling that games back in the day used to give you? Well it's time to feel that again with Divine Divinity.
Divine Divinity
pros:
//fast game with modern day graphics with easy controls that moves from location A to B to C and so on
cons:
//some difficult battles
//some overpowered enemies
//some lack of directions/instructions
//you start underpowered
//confusing objectives
//good game

Old school at its finest. Fun even after all these years.
Pretty fun game. Interesting blend of ARPG and CRPG mechanics. Combat is similar to something like Diablo (though slower) however the dialogue and quests feel closer to a CRPG. Gear system is a bit odd because all gear will have randomized stats so it's heavily beneficial to save scum prior to looting. The game lets you pick a class at the start but the game is really classless, every ability is available to you and you are heavily encouraged to spread your points out so I strongly recommend picking the character whose voice you enjoy the most because they will be speaking every now and then. Game can be janky at times in terms of pathing. Story was decent, dialogue is funny particularly for side quests (your character is a bit of a jerk xD). Some of the skills are odd, was playing an archer and reading forum found out one of the passives I spent skill points on was broken and does nothing, also realized early on my spread shot has the amount of spread vary depending on which direction I'm facing, so you might want to look up skills before you take them just in case there's something weird with them. World is very open, so you can do all the side quests you want before progressing main story. Main story itself is linear, so not much replayability outside of if you want to try another build. Overall good game, not as good as the DOS games or BG3 but if you've finished those and want more Larian this is a pretty fun adventure.
Holds up surprisingly well - worth a chance if you like D:OS.
Too old to enjoy, but I'm hoping for an remaster so I can give this an honest shot.
Very fun start to Larians games , nice to see where it all started
Divine Divinity is an incredibly captivating RPG that offers a perfect blend of exploration, storytelling, and combat. Its vast open world is filled with secrets, challenging quests, and unforgettable characters. The game’s skill-based progression system allows you to customize your hero infinitely, making each playthrough feel unique. The isometric visuals may be dated, but they add to the game's charm, while the atmospheric soundtrack immerses you deeply in its fantasy setting.
Whether you're battling monsters or uncovering lore, Divine Divinity provides an incredibly rewarding experience for fans of classic RPGs.
This game's controls are a little clumsy, the spelling and grammar are pretty bad in some spots and could benefit from an editor that could have caught them, and the voice acting ranges from not good to pretty terrible.
What this game does well is the storyline. You can see the promise in the storyline from the outset and understand how this spawned it's sequels. Even with the glitches, forgetting to save and going back 40minutes or more to replay the section, and the bad dialoge acting, you still get lost in the imaginative world this game has created. It may sound like the game is mediocre at best, but that is not actually the case, the storyline does actually make up for all of it's shortcomings and more to make a very decent game. It only makes me wonder if they had been given a first rate budget and a AAA team where this game might have gone. (it did spawn Original sin that might be a clue)
Wonderful game
Highly recommended!
I have been turned into a unrelenting pipsqueek rabbit with no save and no hopes of return. I bseach the powers that be to remedy this issue o;r unfortunately my days of playing these games are over. which is a huge shame because i was going to play and buy them all starting with divine divinity.
That is the immediate work around ppl??!!
Did you ever wish ARPGs such as Diablo had more cRPG elements like quests with problem solving, some puzzles, interacting with lots of NPCs with various dialog choices, so on and so forth ? If the answer is yes, you will probably enjoy this game a lot as blends the two masterfully. The game features classless progression, randomized loot and the usual Larian belgian humor.
Hardcore ARPG fans will probably think some of the game's elements are a blashphemy against the genre like enemies not respawning, to me it's a big plus. I have always been frustrated playing this type of game, saving the world, and seeing that every place I cleansed of evil remained the same wreck as it ever was with zombies and demons roaming freely. Generally the game is full of little details that acknowledges your actions which as I said before brings it closer to a cRPG. Don't feel like paying for things ? Pickpocket or steal, but don't get caught or you'll get thrown in jail. Just got rid of a troll infestation near a farm ? Farmers you meet will thank you. I know that both genres are anthetical to each other as Diablo players just want to kill hordes of enemies and see number go up whereas cRPG players want the world to react to their actions, but this is a blend that I did not I needed before and finally makes the Diablo-like genre palatable to me. I wish there were more games similar to it.
I had no issues running the game on my computer, the only thing I would watch out for is that the game has a lot of quest breakers for secondary quests (there is a guide showing how to avoid them).
This game is very underrated. Diablo-style dungeon crawls, all the quests you can do, etc.
One of the best games of all time!
VERY NOSTALGIC!
Quite an old game but worth playing for once. story is good and combined with a great sense of humor the game gives a fun experience also there are plenty of suprises if you have played divinity original sin before
This game stands out as a solid and enjoyable experience, with an engaging core gameplay loop that keeps you coming back for more. While a significant part of the experience involves grinding — repeating certain tasks, battles, or quests to level up, gather resources, or unlock better gear — it manages to strike a balance where the process doesn't feel overly tedious. Instead, the grind becomes a rewarding challenge, as it constantly gives players a sense of progress and achievement.
The fun lies in how the game mixes these repetitive elements with moments of excitement, creativity, and discovery, ensuring the player never feels stuck in a monotonous cycle. Whether it's the satisfaction of mastering a skill, the thrill of exploring new areas, or the camaraderie of teaming up with others, the game offers plenty to keep players hooked. Overall, while it does demand a time investment, the rewarding experience makes it well worth the effort.
7 of 10
love the older games.
Don't know why I didn't play this 22 years ago.
I love this game, even in 2024 <3
My first ever isometric ARPG game. Can be janky at (most) times, but the story is enjoyable, the dialogues are nice to listen to, and gameplay is pretty simple. The endgame gets a bit tedious and sometimes straight up ridiculous, but nothing a bit of simple cheese can't handle. The graphic seems old and modern at the same time, it's just amazing. Would love to see a remaster (or at least a fix) of this if it's even possible, since apparently Larian lost the code for this. Recommended for people trying to get into isometric hack'n slash ARPG.
hard, but very fun: genuinely charming in how deep it is. as someone coming from dos2, it was super interesting to see what series tropes were carried forward into that (and the mechanics/UI details that made it into dos2 and bg3).
Firstly, this game is VERY old. It is playable but is is also filled with jank and bad game design choices while lacking a lot of quality of life features. Overall tho, if you don't mind dealing with old game jank it is actually a very fun game with a really good story and lots of really good story points that will drag you in and make you want to play more. It is also a long game with my 34.5 hours only being about half way through the game, but I lost my save file and it isn't worth struggling through all that again. Overall tho, unless you just can't stand old game jank I recommend giving this a try.
Meh
A classic in the genre.
On occassion you notice this is Larian's first big game, some bad English here and there, odd bugs, ...
This game is quite old, so graphics etc cannot be compared to more recent games, but it's still immensely fun to play.
I'm really enjoying it. So much stuff in this game is unique. I wish I have played this game earlier.
Quite enjoyable but moving can be a bit awkward
It's an old game, but somewhat interesting. That said, it has some serious shortcomings, such as the insults on one of the screens, and more significantly the amount of hostiles that are extremely powerful in the area you start out in, even before you leave the village. It's interesting, but I'd advise being aware of stuff like that going in, first.
I first played Divine Divinity in 2024, and it turned out to be an entertaining journey. My playthrough stretched beyond 55 hours, as I took my time exploring every nook and cranny of this vast world filled with quirky side quests and memorable encounters. However, while the experience was largely enjoyable, it wasn’t without its flaws.
The main storyline didn’t leave much of an impression on me, but Larian truly shines in its side quests. Whether it’s choosing sides in a bizarre conflict between warring wasps and bees, helping a cook with an unexpected dishwashing problem, or encountering an elf who is hilariously bewildered by the hero’s sudden declaration of love, the game delivers a variety of quirky, humorous, and often absurd situations. There are also more traditional fantasy tasks, like finding legendary armor or passing trials to join a guild, but it’s the delivery that stands out. Every quest is infused with a light, comedic tone, and the stellar voice acting only enhances the experience.
The world is enormous, and exploring it is both a joy and a challenge. On one hand, you’re constantly discovering hidden camps, treasure, caves, or fascinating characters with their own stories or useful items to offer. This constant sense of discovery kept me engaged and eager to explore further. On the other hand, exploration can feel like a bit of a slog at times.
Despite the abundance of teleporters, there’s still a lot of tedious running around, which can get exhausting. This issue is somewhat alleviated by a frog statue that transforms your character into a frog, allowing for faster movement, but it’s only a partial fix. The camera can also be frustrating; there were moments when it failed to adjust properly to my character’s position, showing the outside of a building even though I was inside. Navigating through certain areas can be tricky too, as some passages blend too seamlessly with the environment, making them easy to miss. This became especially frustrating in the final location, where numerous archways seemed to merge into the walls. Speaking of the final location (Yuthul Gor), it felt disappointingly empty, offering no real secrets or reasons to explore.
The combat system in Divine Divinity draws clear inspiration from Diablo, with plenty of flexibility in character progression. I finished the game at level 45, starting as a mage but evolving into a hybrid mage-warrior. Still, I had a lot of unlearned spells I wanted to try out, and this excites me, as it leaves room for future playthroughs with different builds and strategies. I wouldn’t recommend going purely as a mage, though—mana depletes far too quickly, which becomes a tiresome limitation after a while.
For a game released in 2002, Divine Divinity holds up remarkably well. Yes, it has its issues, but it remains a charming adventure packed with character build experimentation, secret hunting, and a generous helping of Larian’s signature humor. The voice acting adds another layer of personality to this classic, making it an enjoyable, if imperfect, journey.
