This was a huge disappointment to me.. Once you get to "Operation Flytrap" mission you can't advance further due to a glitch. The only solution I could find was to set affinity from task manager to only one core on my processor or core 1 and core 0 but it didn't work. It's just unplayable, nothing I could do to advance due to this game breaking glitch. A glitch that existed since 2013 but wasn't patched by Activision. Thank you Activision for giving me one more reason to hate you.
Edit:
I came back to try one more time, after setting the affinity to just one Cpu ( Cpu0 ) in task manager, and disabling V-sync also setting low priority to the game process from task manager, I finally made it past the mission. Even though this is a good game, I still can't recommend it because of this..
Runs flawlessly on steam deck at 60 fps. No extra patches needed, no additional configuration. Just install and play. Excellent on the go! Suspends well and have played 10 hours on and off on the steam deck and hasn’t crashed once.
This is a great game, I wish they would update it to Unreal 5 engine :)
Prototype 2 is a lot more fun compared to the original, and is definitely worth playing if you liked the original. No spoiler overview of things relating to the game: Fixes, PlayStation buttons, Movement/Gameplay, Story/Missions, DLC, Achievements.
Fixes required
You're going to need to grab the Prototype2Fix from Nexus Mods, which you can just paste into the game folder. You may set need to lock the framerate of the game to 60 fps, or run at whatever fps you want, but change the following values in 'prototype_fix.ini': RemoveTickRateLimit to true , and FixButtonTapTickRate to true . If you find that Heller is moving towards the right when sprinting, just set those back to false.
Dualsense / DS4 Prompts
If you use a Dualsense / DS4 and want ps prompts, this dude has links for the textures in the comments of this video: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fXx5wza7e6M
You will need TexMod for this. Put Texmod.exe in the game folder. Rename the "prototype2.exe" to "prototype2original.exe", and rename "prototype2engine.dll" to "prototype2originalengine.dll". Then rename "Texmod.exe" to "prototype2.exe". When you open the game through Big Picture mode, it will open texmod. You then need to browse for the "prototype2original.exe" as the target application, and you can load the .tpf file downloading from the youtube comment section in package area. This will replace Xbox prompts to PS4 or PS5 buttons.
Movement/Gameplay
Movement controls have been changed a bit (for controller), but you get used to it after a while. In the original, it often feels like you're fighting with the movement system, but in P2, it feels a bit better to control Heller. Not sure if it is because of the fix or a problem with the game itself, but Heller slightly moves towards the right when sprinting. I mentioned it in the fixes part.
Regarding the powers, I like that there's less amount of moves compared to Prototype 1's numerous moves that you had to purchase using points. I barely used them in 1, so I liked this simpler system better. Maybe you may not like that.
Story/Missions
To be honest, the story is just fine, not too much suspense or anything. The original game's story is slightly better, cause you don't really know what is happening, and you're learning about the world and what happened to it as you progress. Prototype 2's story is pretty okay but the gameplay is why you should play this game. The missions are better in Prototype 2, and the game doesn't get as frustrating as the original.
DLC
There is a Radnet DLC for $9.99, which is extra challenges, skins, and has leaderboards with other players. These challenges are fun, but I don't recommend buying it for $9.99, which is almost the price of the game on sale ($9.99). If you can get it for way lesser by getting the Franchise bundle on sale, which gives Prototype 1, 2 and Radnet for $14.99, then it's worth it. If not, just skip it, but the challenges are pretty nice, and get easier as you upgrade Heller.
Getting 100% Achievements \ Perfect Game
To get 100% Achievements or Perfect game, you will need to play on Hard mode at least once as there is a achievement to beat the game on Hard mode.
There is no new game+ achievement, but there is achievement which is for fully leveling up Heller. There are two ways you can go about this: You can farm Lairs (sort of like mini-dungeons) or Blacknet missions (I did Set 12 Infection 8-A or 8-D i think), by consuming bonus experience targets and then restarting checkpoints, OR play new game+. I did the farming because I didn't want to play the campaign all over, but I think I may have taken more time farming. They really made the level up system in a way where you need to play new game+, which I don't like to do in games. However, I recommend just doing New Game+, as farming got really boring.
There is also an achievement for getting all consume upgrades: these appear randomly throughout the game, and through missions. You may have to run around or fast travel between islands to search.
Expected time to get 100%: Around 20-25 Hours.
Absolute classic, would recommend. Altought it took some time to get it running on win11...
Stuttering extremely bad to the point that it's almost unplayable even with optimization mods and cpu set to 4 core only. Attempted the Nexus mods and so fourth but it doesn't help. Unplayable without a old computer or system that supports the mods.
Needs a mod from nexus mods to fix it. BUT brings back my childhood!! awesome game!! deserves a remaster
I really want to play this game since i played the first one and it was amazing.
But the problem is every time i try to open the game, it get stuck at a black screen or instantly crash.
I am not able to play so I had to get the refund. Please fix it.
Or if any one knows a way to fix it, please let me know.
I have tried a few method on google but didn't work.
black campaign Goes wrong 2. Now in Black guy. Need more Black, cant have Enough
Honestly not much content. The story, which is rather weak and very of the time edgy, can be done very quickly if you blitz it. Most of your time will probably be spent on hunting down collectibles and side objectives but it can repetitive VERY fast. What's leftover is mostly just mindless killing but given how clunky the combos can feel it's not even that fun tbh.
Great game overall, a bit redundant but enjoyable!
Amazing childhood game
a pretty good game. I like the combat and being able to run around the city super fast.
Do Not Buy This Game for PC!!!
Buy the first game instead. Ir tuns horribly on PC, constant stutters and fps drops below 60 even on a RTX 4070. Had top install fixer mods just to get it past the start up screen, but man stutters and fps drops make this unplayable. Yes I also locked it at 60fps max, still stutters and drops below that.
I went back to first prototype game which not only is a much better game but runs at smooth 240fps.
Buy and your own risk, because i bought it more than 14 day sago, I can't even get a refund.
Unplayable mess can't even open the game without a mod installed and even when mod is installed there is a bug stopping me from progressing on a mission
NOTE: Community Fix for Prototype 2 is linked at the bottom of this review if you're not the long form reading type and a TL;DR.
The community fix worked wonders for the first game and made it run very well. I had to do no extra steps. But this game, Prototype 2 is a truly horrendous port. It crashes CONSTANTLY even with the fix. In many instances you have to run the game at 30FPS before triggering cutscenes to get through them without crashing. Other times that doesn't work, and you have to limit your cores to a single core to get through it. and even then you STILL can crash at the cutscenes. Notice a theme here?
The cutscenes are the most un-optimized part of the game. As for the whole game, its just plain un-optimized for PC, as this port is just an absolute shameful excuse of a port. Every time a cutscene triggers to that affect, either by a Memory cutscene from a consumed //:BLACKNET Intrigue target for those side-missions to get very beneficial mutations, or a pre-rendered main story cutscene from a mission. It crashes rather consistently for me, and ALWAYS on cutscene triggers. If you don't wanna go through the headache of troubleshooting the game on your specific hardware, skip out on this title.
The first game runs just fine with the community fix on Nexus Mods (via my own experience bias), so the first game I absolutely can recommend to you! The same mod maker made a fix for Prototype 2 which at least lets it run without crashing as soon as you launch the damn thing, its just getting past the roadblocks caused by crashes specific to many users own hardware that is the struggle. And you WILL struggle. Especially since it is specific to your hardware most of the crashes, so most of the guides online to "fix" the crashing are unreliable since its few and far between that people have the exact same problems.
TL;DR: The game is a very shitty port to PC and runs horrendously on modern hardware. Crashes galore. Community Fix lets you actually boot the game and not immediately CTD on launch, but keeping it running is a chore. Many guides are unreliable as many CTD issues are specific to YOUR hardware.
Should you decide to get the game anyway, here is a link to the nexus mod community fix for Prototype 2: https://www.nexusmods.com/prototype2/mods/42
Extremely bland story, dumb main character that works as a swearing machine gun and has no personality other than being angry 24/7, but the gameplay is good.
Wasb fun and good story
Absolute cinema, I wish a third version of this game would be made
Oldie but goodie, sometimes goofie. It be old it be cheap just grab it it is fun.
As much as I loved this game when I was younger, I have to be honest that it does not hold up well in 2025. While the powers and concept are interesting, and there is a thrilling sense of power when tearing through hordes of enemies, the overall content and gameplay is lacking. For a bioweapon supposed to cause mass mutations of uniquely horrifying monsters, the enemy variety is shockingly low. The world initially seems large and ripe for exploration, but the collectibles feel bland and uninteresting; the blackboxes in particular feel as though they were wasted potential. Every location feels essentially the exact same, and the missions lack variety, with only a few standing out in my mind as unique. A great deal of time honestly felt like busywork to pad for time. Collecting upgrades for powers is sporadic based on when the game assigns an upgrade target at random, and the evolution trees, aside from a few specific powers they grant, typically boil down to a slight status increase that is barely noticeable in the grand scheme of things. The hunting sonar was an interesting mechanic until i realized its heavy restrictions outside of scripted missions and pre-assigned targets basically turned it into a glorified quest marker that's harder to see and constantly needs to be refreshed. The powers themselves were fun, but were lacking in overall variety; many feeling as though they were just thrown in to be situational in a single circumstance, and basically making each other redundant. The blade for example was essentially identical to the claws, but with slightly more area with the power spin, and worse in the sense it couldn't target enemies in the air like the claws. The Whipfist, one of the few new powers in this game from the first, essentially just did the power attack of the blade, and its long grab was made virtually redundant by the normal leaping ability. Don't get me wrong; this game was still entertaining for a good while before I really started to feel the wear, and if you are an achievement hunter it might be worth it to you to spend a little time in new game + to complete it. But honestly, this is the second game in the Prototype franchise, and after the success of the first, the studio has no excuse not to fix the flaws in this game that were already present and apparent in the previous entry. All of this, as well as the fact it is impossible to play on computer without messing with the CPU settings or downloading a mod, make it one I cannot recommend. The idea is there; the execution is not.
When i try to open the game the screen goes black and i get sendt to the steam plat menu of the game, and in the files it said prototype2 crash?? someone help i want to play the game. I have tried to use the thing were it gets the missing files back but it dont work!?
a pretty, fun & easier carnage game
Prototype 2 é goated demais, must play na minha humilde opinião

Ok first things first, just like prototype 1 this requires files from nexus mods just to work out of the box, however unlike prototype 1 it wasnt smooth sailing after the community patch. The sound is still pretty quiet even after the patch, but also one mission required me to set priority through task manager to limit my cpu cores on the game to only one to progress past the "bonus objective" tutorial mission.
Now onto the actual game itself. In my opinion the combat and graphics are better but I still enjoyed my time with prototype 1 more for a few reasons. The movement here is more floaty and making those oddly satisfying perfect jump from rooftop to rooftop isnt really a thing here like it was in the first game. Which is a shame since the map design and scale and cluster of buildings is a better playground. Which is unfortunately also held back by the fact that the map is broken up into 3 different parts in which requires loading screens to get to. Another big downgrade is atmosphere here isnt as good as it was in the first. Im not sure what it is that isnt as alluring as the first but its missing a certain something I cant put my finger on. But the greatest sin in my opinion is the story and main character. The story was just boring compared to the first, it just wasnt as intriguing as the ground zero, corporate disaster, protagonist dealing with the fallout like the first. Furthermore Heller is just kinda annoying. Hes your typical pissed off, just learned how to curse, cringey and not in a charming way one liners. I much prefered Mercers non chalant, moody, laid backish attitude to this over the top acting. Also the character motivations make no sense to me. For one to villainize Mercer after he saved the city in the first game while also psuedo work alongside/through gentek which he despised made no sense to me. And Heller hell bent on just rescuing his daughter only to spare a gentek officer after showing no care to anyone else in his way also made no sense regardless of the "dad code" shared between them.
In summary I think if youre looking for better combat and graphics this is probably the better pick. But if you a better story and vibe, which surprising to my own typical preferences for gameplay and graphics, Id highly suggest the first game more.
please fix the game so we can play it without having to go through hours of fixes and file replacing
I absolutely recommend this game if you enjoy open world games like Far Cry and Assassins Creed. It feels similar in the way you're progressing through a story and unlocking new abilities as you go. The one way this game differs, however, is that in this game, you are pretty much unequivocally the main character. You feel strong, fast, impactful, and free. It's an absolutely awesome game to mess around with. In my opinion it's criminal that this game never got a sequel. I'd love to see some kind of multiplayer too. I think a GOW: Beast-esque gamemode would be awesome, since this game has a lot of mutated creatures and people with unique utilization of the mutations.
It works. I don't know what device other people are playing this game on, but it worked for me and I managed to get a 100%.
As a game overall I'd give it a high 6, it's okay, not too good, but definitely not bad either.
But for the nostalgia I'd give it a high 8.
What a ride it was.
Throwback to my childhood right here LOL. I am aware that this game is unplayable upon mission 2. to fix this just get to the part where you get stuck, tab out and head to task manager/ go to details/ scroll to prototype 2 and right click/ set affinity/ un-check all processors and select CPU 0. tab back into the game and reload mission from last checkpoint and finish the "Claw Pounce Attack Scene" current systems run too fast for this game to pick up on this cutscene so you have to do this to lower the fps so the game can pick it up but after that objective is complete you can set your affinity back to "all Processors" and enjoy the game. if the game crashes upon loading saves then you might have to download the Prototype 2 fix on NexusMods "fyi it's easy its called prototype 2 fix lol" download it and extract to desktop, browse local files on steam for prototype 2. open the unzipped folder on your desktop and drag all the internal files from the fix to prototype 2 and replace the files when asked to. that should fix your crashing problem. i know it's a lot just to play a game, Unfortunatley the game is still old as hell and has yet to be optimized to our current hardware but you do what you gotta do to play gems like these. Hope this helped
The truth is - this game is FAR superior to the original Prototype. It deserves a 10/10 and would love to see a sequel. Funny cause I remember not liking this game as much when I was a teen but dangnabit its great!!
Some quick notes:
1. Use the firs two steps of this video to run the game butter smooth on modern PC hardware: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=P4cmh5eX38w
2. copy paste these launch options under properties in steam for 4k60fps: resolution=3840x2160@60
Ok, back to it. This game was made with some serious LOVE. It drips from every aspect. It takes EVERYTHING from Prototype 1 - cleans it up, enhances it, and turns it up to 11.
Grips, grunts, and groans:
1 Oh no, its not Alex Mercer!! Guess what, Heller is actually awesome. I remember not liking him when I was an edgy teen cause I loved Mercer, but Heller is a bada** in this game.
2 the story is... secondary. The original had more vibes, intrigue, mystery, and immersion; here it is just an excuse to be bada** and put the player in this world, but that's OK! There are some cool things like Alex evolving others etc, but it just doesn't hit like the first game.
3 the additions of the boroughs and loss of upper Manhattan kinda stinks, but works for pacing and to change it up from the original
Now, all the juice. Like I said, this game is Prototype 1 on steroids and molly. They tightened up the combat so much and got rid of what felt like repetitive powers (looking at you muscles mass + hammer fists, and shields from 1). You can use two powers at once, plus shields - it just feels so good and well thought out. Then everything else of course is also better: consuming in general (stealthily and in combat), the leaps and throws are tight and accurate, locomotion / traversal *chefs kiss* it does not get more SLICK. The boss fights are a blast, each enemy has tactics to learn and weapons that work better than others on them. The power creep and way you level up individual skills has you interacting with the world in various ways. IT IS REALLY SOMETHING SPECIAL!!!! The dialogue is great and Heller is freaking funny. There are some great one liners from him and a ton of the Blackwatch mercs are just hilarious. And all without ruining the immersion, it actually works really well. Vehicles feel wayyyy better. And finally... the mission design is kick ass!! I don't want to pull my hair out from timers like the original, or reset checkpoints cause the thing I was escorting got F'd.
PS love the Radnet event challenges to unlock homegrown movie style fan fiction from the dev team. That was heart warming and really cool.
TLDR: Give me Prototype 3 and please include Mercer AND Heller!
game is fun and engaging you can make it difficult or make it easy for yah a all around good game
noice game writing a bit rushed in parts but flay through the story and just have fun. pc is bugged here and there on higher end pcs
Replayed both games after 10 years or so and this one is very fun. You really are a one man army and it's awesome to take any foe regarding size because all the abilities to use. Go stealth or not, hijack or steal a helicopter and wreak havoc or just destroy everyone with bare hands.
First Prototype was good but this is much better, especially game mechanics and control wise.
I'd recommend to play first Prototype 1 and then Prototype 2 to see how much second game had evolved and is more fun to play.
Probably game will crash for many at the startup (because it's old game :) ) but there's a fix in nexusmods page. There's also a problem at the start with one tutorial mission. There's also a quick fix for that which is needed to be done once to get past that situation and everything forward is very smooth and no issues.
Definite recommendation for this game.
As someone who never played this game until recently, it rocks! My biggest complaint about the game is that its too short. I used to be a huge Crackdown and Saints Row 4 fan back in the day because of the crazy power fantasy but this game honestly kind of puts them to shame in terms of gameplay mechanics.
Short and sweet, it's a shame the studio who made this isn't around anymore.
Very nostalgic 2010's game. The gameplay loop was fun, the story was straightforward with a likeable main character and the open world was neither bloated nor filled with meaningless side missions. Definitely recommend if you want an straightforward old school open world game to beat in less than 20 hours.
Game literally doesn't have sound. It has a lot of options for tweaking how the sound would behave if it did have sound, but they forgot to include all the sounds themselves.
I'm guessing Prototype 3 never got made because the developer wanted to release it without video output.
This game actually is so fun, you really feel like you are a one man army able to destroy everything.
Its a fantastic game that sadly does require a mod to stop it from crashing on startup on newer rigs
It's basically unplayable if your pc is "too good" so unless you have a potato pc as your main/spare then yeah play the game on the potato but it's impossible to finish the game since every time you wanna consume someone/thing while getting shot it crashes if your pc is higher end
It's a disgustingly bad port, my heart breaks, but I need to refund this one...
A lot of people are saying this game doesn't work, which it doesn't. But if you take a small amount of time to find an online patch it'll work perfectly fine. There's a patch on nexus mods that fixes both FPS and crashing on startup issues. I'd recommend getting the patch if you want to play this gem of a game without issues.
this game cant even run,i suggest you dont buy this game.. this game is dead
theres no more prototype
Heh. I'm stuck at the main quest to acquire Claws. Eliminating everyone does not do anything. Its asking me to do pounce claw, but does not register the action as complete.
The Game is broken once you get to the level with the claws you get stuck and it's pointless passing it I got it on sale. It's a good game but as of now can't get past it I wouldn't recommend getting it. The first one works really good plays well.
No game has powers like this, phenomenal.
Crashes. Wont launch.
Played the first one on Xbox 360, had a lot of fun when I put it on my steam deck. Had no problems running, and had even more fun. Was on a sit and wait for orders job for a couple weeks and took that time to play and beat this game, had at least 12 hours of game time, not sure why it says I played for 0.4 hrs.
games great, but I have to pay $10 extra dollars to be able to do challenges and unlock one skin, what a joke.
7/10 good old fun game like we don't get anymore. when remake?
