This is the worst metroidvania I've ever played. Combat is horrendously slow and clunky, and the "upgrades" feel useless compared to ones in other games. Art style is the only thing this game has going for it. Sale game for sure.
I played Apotheon for almost 10 hours and finished the main quest, and honestly, it was amazing. The story really pulled me in, and I loved how it dives deep into Greek mythology — you actually learn a lot while playing. The art style is beautiful, the soundtrack is just perfect and fits the vibe so well.
The combat is really interesting too — it’s not just hack and slash, you actually have to think a bit, switch weapons, block, dodge, and time your attacks. It feels super satisfying when you get it right.
I already started playing on Olympian difficulty now, and I’m definitely going to finish it — the challenge makes it even more fun.
If you like Greek mythology, a good story, and some unique gameplay, I highly recommend Apotheon. It’s seriously underrated.
Incredible art style and soundtrack
Worth it
we need a second game.
This is one of the best greek mythology games out there. I've played through it about six times, and I still have a ton of fun
A "metroidvania" based on greek mythology.
Looks good in screenshots but doesn't play well - very unpleasant to look at in action, even though the art is technically well done.
- Hard-to-read environments, mainly because of the limited color palette
- Eye strain inducing overbright colors
- Unusably small UI elements and text on higher resolutions
- The map is transparent and overlaid on top gameplay, making it a hard to read mess
- Capped to 60 fps
It also suffers from clunky controls and weird default controller keybinds - for example, why on earth is attack bound to a trigger? If you change the bindings, the game will still display the default ones, which is just lazy.
It's better with mouse + keyboard, but a game like this wants to played on a couch with a big TV, not hunched over a desk.
The combat is weird. It's easy to avoid enemy attacks by dodge rolling and blocking, but this works the other way around as well - enemies jump, dodge and block, and getting hits in unnecessarily tedious. Even though enemies occasionally fly away when a hit connects, combat on the whole feels unfulfilling.
Also, depending on your weapon, your attacks have varying range, speed and damage, which is cool on paper, but in a game this clunky all that attention to detail just goes to waste - I can't but feel this would work better as turn-based game.
I consider Apotheon a prime example of style over substance. Maybe it picks up later, but I'll never know, as the headache-inducing visuals, infuriating controls and lackluster combat will keep me from completing the game.
The gameplay can be stilted at times, but the atmosphere and presentation are first class. This is an obscure but underrated little gem in the metroidvania space.
"the wines all smashed which one of you did this" what proceeds is peek cinemas
It’s beautiful and well-done. I know some people don’t like the combat mechanics, but it didn’t personally bother me at all. I felt it all worked well.
great artstyle

It's a unique fun and interesting game.

Beautiful art - but meh combat - especially the bosses
Apotheon
I liked the style of this game, the art direction is fantastic and the lighting techniques are phänomenal, voiceacting was nice to. However combat is super wonky and akward, you always take so long to take a swing while enemies are jumping like in super mario, on top of that, the autoaiming on controllers is not great, that game is probably better played on a keyboard.
I came close to liking it however I only can give a negative rewiew because the numerous bugs, glitches and crashes I've encountered, the game crashed like 5 times in my 10 hour playthrough and on top of that I got stuck on a death loop once where the game incorectly placed my respawn coordinates under a platform so I keept falling to death over and over, thank god the game autosaves for you periodicaly or else I just wouldn't have finished it
only buy on a steep discount, without the technical flaws it would be an alright game but with them it becomes frustrating super quick
Crashes constantly, it's unplayable
A fantastic 2d action game. I would classify this game as a beat-em-up. I played through the entire game twice, and my only complaint is that the game wasn't three times longer! (Or that a sequel was never made) You should play it!
I accidentally saw the game on Steam and decided to take it. The game is about how the gods abandoned us and we need to kill them/defeat their servants. The main feature of the game is that it is made in the form of frescoes and it is very cool. Alas, there was a bug with textures when I passed the Hephaestus level, but this did not affect my overall rating, because the bug disappeared when I simply re-entered his house)
Tentative thumbs up. Combat is rather floaty and the weapons are a bit too numerous to feel meaningful other than switching out to another when one breaks (there is some nuance, like blunt weapons against heavier armor). The item count could have been reduced and some of their effects combined, as cycling through them all can be confusing. But the Greek Mythological setting makes it worth it if you are interested in that. The aesthetic brought me to the touching end.
Stylish art direction, but surprisingly janky combat ( like trying to melee with "Barotrauma" characters ). Randomness in combat, with unexpected outcomes is part of the charm of the game. There is technique of sorts ( with being able to dodge-roll ), but the melee ultimately reminded me of when I would button-mash in Street Fighter 2 ( the arcade ). I really just overwhelmed the AI with a flurry of attacks and windups, while missing occasionally.
Crashed 3 times in the first 45 minutes.
Yes
Deep plot, unique and great graphics, soundtrack and gameplay. That is Apotheon. If anything, I thing this game brutally falls under the radar of adventure and greek mythology games (as much as I know).
Zeus's penis makes me feel good about my own penis
Had so much fun playing.
Excelente juego, historia, concepto , graficas y experiencia de juego, absolutamente recomendado.
Banger
Amazing game. If you like Ancient Greece you must definitely buy this. The combat system is a bit clunky, but it works just fine with a bit of practice. The price is very reasonable when it's on sale. Lots of secrets and achievements. The 3 bucks I have spent on this game were of good use.
Aa Ancient Greek Mythology Fan here: Wonderfull game with a unique graphic style
This is a damn fine metroidvania with a really unique art style. Definitely recommend this to anyone who is a fan of the genre.
With how deep the gameplay and the uniquness of the art direction of this game, i'm suprised that this title doesn't sell more than a million.
Para amantes da mitologia grega e jogos de plataforma, sem palavras! Jogo excelente, dificuldade na medida perfeita!
If you're into Greek mythology and classical era warfare, this game is a really fun time. It's an especially good experience on the Steam Deck; if you have one, I recommend giving this game a chance if the theme interests you at all.
Apotheon is one of the best games I've played in years and I can confidently say that, as far as first play throughs go, it is one of my favorite games ever.
Pros:
-One of the most unique artstyles I have ever seen in a game
- Complex and unique metroidvania, unlike any others I have played
-Dynamic and fluid combat system which inspires creativity
-A surprisingly large amount of classic rpg elements (i.e. wanted level, lockpicking, etc.) for a metroidvania
-So much lore to digest for Ancient Greek nerds. Excerpts from classic greek writers (with Hesiod and Herodotus' writings be quoted quite often).
Cons:
- Crashed a few times (the Harbor of Tides, the largest and most ambitious zone, seems to be the worst cause of this).
- Little to no decision making and choices don't matter
very true to the myths well done loved it.
8/10
Kill gods
Good game if you enjoy greek mythology.
Amazing classical music, great display of greek culture, and ancient history.
Combat does not feel that great, accesing the local map is terrible unless you go to the start menu and access it from there.
An Ok game!
9/10
God of war 2D.👍👍
Good game
What a fun and hidden little gem. Great map design, great subject (Greek mythology). Gameplay is mostly great, sometimes it feels clunky with which direction the character is swinging, but I am also not super great at these games so it could be me.
Absolute must have for those who like ancient Greek mythology and metroid like 2-D games.
It's a solid greek experience. but I wouldn't play it again. one time through and I'm kinda done and bored, I love this game still enough to recommend it. It's probably one of the many best greek based games with plenty of fun if you can get used to the combat.
Personally I''d give it another shot if it wasn't for some issue I had.. can't honestly remember what it was. but it did turn me off the game. minor gripe sorry. but do give it a go if you find it interesting is all i'll say.
however 15 bucks still is a bit high for this old game.
if you re interesting with mythology it could be fun if you re not you'll probably bore. it was a different experience.
So i tried for the 3rd time and this time I didn't drop it and finished the game. I know what was pushing me away from this title: combat. It's pretty bad, feels clunky and I didn't like it at all.
But overall I enjoyed this game. Based on a Greece mythology is a huge plus for me. Graphics look really good, sound and music are fine and for the game like this it has very nice voice acting. Story is simple, linear and not so long, backtracking and finding secrets is not pain in the ass. Also I really like the ideas for boss fights but weak combat kinda kills it unfortunately.
So overall pretty enjoyable experience, would actually be perfect if not for weak combat.
P.S. To 100% the game you need to beat it twice (After 1st playthrough you unlock the highest difficulty on which you need to finish the game again).
Artistically creative platformer! Controls are sometimes a little tricky, but still worth it.
