It's a nice game, but please, make it run on steam deck. Actually is broken (correct compatibility - unsupported :/ ).
Even my computer wants nothing to do with this game, because no matter what I do, I can't open this game up. I've tried pressing the play button, downloading external files and importing them into the game's files, and and tried troubleshooting it, but no matter what I do, I literally can't play this game.

This game is fun, the levels are great and the music isn't bad, though the one and only thing that makes this game suck, is the final/boss. It's not fun, it's barely playable, and the fact there's a near impossible achievement attached to it shows the devs had no clue what the fuck to do in or with this game. Don't waste your money or time with this garbage. Watch a review video and say you've played the game, it's a lot more enjoyable and less time consuming and NOBODY would blame you.

Honestly, I don't see how people hate this game so much.
Yes, the lock-on mechanic is not necessary
Yes, some of the bosses can be a bit annoying
However, the game IS fun.
The soundtrack (despite what some people say) is very enjoyable, even if its not "Sonic 3/Mania quality"
And overall I feel like this game is just over-hated.
It's not a perfect game
It's definitely not the best sonic game out there
But it's definitely NOT the worst, and it's not even close.
I heavily recommend you play it, instead of looking at all the negative reviews of people being butt-hurt cause they didn't get what they wanted.

Used to be recommended when it came out in 2010/2011 but at the end 2024 or in the future no, I'd rather swap Sonic 4 to Sonic Mania, least that game of Sonic Mania was the true definitive version of Sonic 4, didn't mind the Splash Hill zone soundtrack in Sonic 4, that's all that this game has got going for, save your money instead of buying Sonic 4 episode 1 or get Sonic Mania instead that's more worth your time. However Sonic 4 Espisode 2 was slightly better than this game. Not recommended.

This game is quite frankly a beeg beeg mess. It's got jumbled physics, alright music (which is bad for the standards of a Sonic game) and falls a bit short on, well, everything (and despite all of it I still went out of my way to get every achievement because spite weeee). I generally wouldn't reccomend buying this at full price, and even if it's discounted, there's still better options out there. I'm genuinely surprised that this is still up on steam after all these years, but eh, guess you can experience crap if you want to. Oh yeah I needed to install Java just for this game. Yeah. That too.

Forget what people say negativly about this game! Its fun! Some special stages are difficult but its can be forgiven as the art style and level design/bosses easily carry! (Careful for the final boss tho)

As far as i can tell, I almost found it Fun though it is gonna be a very Difficult One. Some Levels i found it very Difficult to complete, Especially the Lost Labyrinth Act 2
Sonic the Hedgehog 4 Episode 1 is going to need a Lot of Practice like the Classic First to Three Sonic the Hedgehog Games
they tried to make it like the classic sonic games but failed badly

it says Sonic the HEdgehog 4 episode 1 but it is not Classic Sonic it is Modern Sonic and terible Game physics.
This is one of the greatest sonic experiences of all time. I truly believe that Sonic Team have peaked and it's only downhill from here. From the complex and rewarding gameplay to the stunning visuals, Sonic The Hedgehog 4 Episode 1 is the greatest game that Sega has ever had the honor of achieving. The world clearly wasn't ready for this underrated masterpiece.

A painfully bad game that fails to live up to the success of glory days. Sonic Mania Plus is a better Sonic 4 than this. If this game goes on sale, fine if you want to get this game. Just play Sonic Mania instead.

It's not a perfect game by any means but I fr think the community heavily under credits how fun this game can be. Played it to completion and I know I will be coming back because to my eyes its a perfect sit down and turn off your brain Sonic game. Sonic 4 is nowhere near the level of quality as Genesis Sonic especially Sonic 2 but for what its worth I love Sonic 4 and its level design from Dimps is just as fun as the other Sonic games they've handled. Also the art style is cool idk I like how it looks it pleases my eyes. Backgrounds and foregrounds do mix a little tho thats my main complaint.

what sonic game needs you to install java to play? dude, just buy mania if you want a mostalga trip these physics are terrible and they remade LABYRNTH ZONE out of all of the zones like dude remake starlight instead! they remade all zones from previous games and what those games did was make original stages, except emerald hill and green hill this DOES NOT deserve the title "sonic 4" and reused the sonic 1 special stages! make original ones!
This game is miserable. Do not even buy this just to experience it even, skip forward to episode 2 instead.
Controls aren't good. One of the most important things about sonic controls is momentum, meaning how you can go at different speeds and it can take time to slow down. In this game, if you don't hold a direction in the air, you stop on a dime and drop like a rock. This happens even if you're spindashing off a ledge. if you're a sonic fan then you'll have to fight with your classic sonic physics knowledge and muscle memory in order to play adequately and not die. The pinball sections are quite hindered by the physics because again, you stop on a dime and drop like a rock if you don't hold a direction. You'll go very little horizontally when you touch bumpers, it looks stupid. There are also a lot of springs throughout the game that bounce you over a pit. If you don't hold the direction it wants you to go, then you're just gonna fall into the pit and perish. That's TERRIBLE game design.
Gameplay outside of the physics isn't the best. The level design here isn't amazing, being quite simple across the acts. There are some sections of the game that have gimmicks though, such as using a torch in darkness. Some gimmicks like the gears in the last zone are just painfully slow for no reason. I think it's stupid to have the homing attack sections ( Which is lazy game design that's used too much ) when the homing attack range is so short. There were so many times where the reticle to homing attack showed up but when I pressed the button to homing attack I had just gotten out of range, so instead you airdash into the enemies, take damage and fall.
The visuals aren't good. In the first zone especially does it look like flashy plastic, and you can really see all of the pngs just sliding across the backround. Then in the last zone it gets so busy that it's difficult to figure out what's a ground or wall. The music is pretty controversial with this game. I think the compositions are neat, though only a few in this episode stand out to me. The shaker used throughout the entire ost is too intrusive, repetitive and genuinely hurts for me to listen too after a while. If the shaker wasn't used I'd enjoy the music more.
There were also quite a few glitches that I experienced. Sound effects randomly becoming louder, springs not bouncing you, the game crashing 2 times.
There really isn't anything interesting going on in this game, you won't be missing anything if you don't play. The biggest mistakes this game made were not having good physics and calling itself Sonic 4.

Forgot to make a review several months ago when I beaten this game.
Shows how much I care about this game honestly.
In all fairness, I thought this game was pretty fun. I can understand people having problems with the immense lack of inspiration and originality in things like the levels, sounds and gameplay but unoriginality is something I was able to get behind so it wasn't much of a problem for me. The homing attack, while stiff to use when attacking enemies, is busted and can send Sonic at max speed which is pretty fun to do when speedrunning the levels. I think the level design is pretty good for a classic sonic game and even having some really cool twists on some of the acts even despite the level aesthetics themselves being ripped straight from Sonic 1 and 2. Bosses, while also ripped from the 3 main predecessors, have an extra phase that makes them more difficult, which is especially seen in the final boss of the game. On the topic of the final boss, that achievement to do the entirety of Egg Station without taking damage is outrageously difficult for no reason haha. I even liked the twist on the Sonic 1 special stages, though some of those were frustrating to play. Apart from the bugged 1000 kills achievement, I can't think of anything too horribly wrong, it was a fun, short experience and I look forward to playing and finishing Ep 2.
