We have a casualty :(
Where do I start with this gem from 2001. Tactical and strategic greatness across all maps including the expansions. Hours worth of gameplay to experiment with different ways of completing the missions. Get the game on Steam to get the expansions Desert Siege and Island Thunder.
Only the OG's will remember and play this one. This is 1000x more authentic feeling of a shooter than the cheesy Ghost Recons out this day.
Wow even in 2024 still a good game.
Amazing game, still as fun 10 years later. Still a pain to go through missions without a single dead soldier.
I Liked The Facts That This Game Rules Full Gore Plus You Can Add Certain Mods Thru Ghost Recon.Net It's A Link That Works Perfectly And Anyone Who Would Be Interested In Playing Some Multiplayer With Me Feel Free To Join If Not Then Go To A Different Game...
It's good.
The game's from 2001, so temper your expectations.
Sigh - such a classic beautiful game. My first PC gaming shooter. The perfect military campaign in the early 2001. My love for Russian conflict ever since Goldeneye. This game was my first online PVP experience in it's perfect lag! But we didn't care, we fought anyways excited to see what happened to the enemy and ourselves.
My name Recon/SilenceR came from Ghost Recon. This is where my PC online gaming life began. Even before STEAM - I was playing this off a CD!!!!
I still have the poster, the players guide and the original gaming box!!!!! God bless Tom Clancy and may he RIP.
What's even more awesome is in 2008 I actually joined the US Army and eventually got to work and fight side by side with GreenBerets in Afghanistan - my profile picture is on the Firebase in 2010!
Still good, 20+ years later!
Laser accurate russians whilst you struggle to follow the physics of rifle shooting, would have better odds throwing stones in the current war
Best shooter game ever
Very amazing game I would highly recommend anybody who sees this to play it.
old school cool
Game is too old with super accurate enemies
amazing title worth a re visit
A classic. A bargain price these days aswell. tense slow gameplay, where every move could be your last.
in my opinion still the best ghost recon game ever made, plus it has 2 great expansions with desert storm and island thunder
I've heard wonders of this game, being a legendary game in the past and being one of the best in the Tom Clancy's series. But I tried to play it and... oh, god... it aged like milk and I couldn't enjoy it.
Nothing new in the plot: typical "Russia wants to become the USSR again and be powerful, so the USA's army has to stop this evil plan". I can't tell more since I just played the first mission. Still, if you complete the main game there are two expansions to milk the game more: Desert Siege and Island Thunder.
Why do I say it aged like milk? Basically because the gameplay just feels horrible. The main idea is good: a team compossed of three squads with many soldiers with different roles such as riflemen, demomen, snipers or support. It feels realistic with the idea of being careful with what you do in battle, since once you lose a soldiers you can't play with it anymore, but it's just shit to progress through an empty map, being to find enemies a hard task and seeing all your soldiers falling and dying like flies.
Visually... no comments. Yeah, it's a 2001 game, but it just looks like a PS1 game. One year later Splinter Cell was released, and let me say that graphics just aged like wine compared to Ghost Recon's.
The sound effects and voice acting are just OK. Nothing special to be honest.
Even if you want to play the game, I'd wait for sales. The price for it it's 10€. Considering it's a game that didn't aged well and that is 23 years old, I'd rather to pay the 3€ on sales, which is a more fair price.
Don't get me wrong. I guess years ago this was the game that blew everybody's minds, that defined the tactical shooter genre, yada yada yada... but in 2024 it just feels unplayable, or unenjoyable. Don't take this as the universal truth, but as my humble opinion
I enjoyed the game's attention to detail in terms of military equipment and procedures, which added to the game's immersive atmosphere. The game's graphics and sound design were also impressive at the time of its release, with detailed environments and realistic sound effects.
The game's multiplayer mode was a highlight, allowing players to team up with friends and tackle challenging missions together. The game's emphasis on teamwork and coordination made for a unique and rewarding multiplayer experience.
However, the game's controls and mechanics may feel a bit clunky to players who are accustomed to more modern shooters. The game's AI can also be a bit simplistic at times, and the game's difficulty level can be quite high, especially for players who are new to tactical shooters.
Overall, the 2001 version of Tom Clancy's Ghost Recon is a classic game that is still worth playing today, especially for fans of tactical shooters and military games. While it may not hold up to modern standards in terms of graphics and gameplay, its influence on the genre is still evident, and it remains a fun and challenging game to play.
Rating: 4/5 stars
Pure nostalgia. All the weird stuff that bothered me 20+ years ago is still there, but it's all part of the ride. Loved it then, love it now. It's very confusing how to get the program to work on modern OS's, but I highly recommend it. In this economy? Best $3 I've ever spent.
Thought I was playing minecraft with all the blocks.
It's very dated
I DID NATO!!!!
Surprisingly easy to pickup team based tactical shooter with reasonably short missions for quick play. The gunplay is obviously dated and I doubt anyone misses the way it has been done here but nobody plays Ghost Recon to go gun-ho. Team play aspect is nicely done, maybe its a little pity that adversaries aren't the smartest and neither pay attention to their mysteriously dying friends or consider possibility to hide in cover. This is somewhat mitigated with higher difficulties thus even for newcomer I would recommend skipping the recruit level. Infinite ammunition isn't needed and AI on recruit is super slow.
For anyone jumping in the game now I would recommend modding the base game to remove excessive fog from the campaign. Some maps will be slightly worse but in most cases the fog is better gone.
Archaic controls, all enemies are ultra competent snipers that will instakill you the second you go to take a shot, and AI teammates are incapable of doing anything on their own or even surviving on a fundamental level.
I remember this game very fondly but replaying it today I'm wondering what the hell I found good about it back in the day. Makes me wonder what other games I liked as a kid that are actually extremely bad.
its been almost 18 years since i last played this game and its still every bit as good as I remember.
There a hefty mod-pack on nexus / moddb that transforms this game into a 14-16 GB could still be being worked out funnily enough.
When you hear DOP-DOP-DOP, you know you're dead before you even start falling. Hard, brutally hard, but that's the point.
"Gentlemen, welcome to Tbilisi."
It echoes still.
Best early sniper game, I bought the entire set as each went on sale in stores, when 'steam' was a type of clothes iron.
The mods were massive, as was the enjoyment of the game.
excellent game with highly addictive action, thought-provoking in the perfect way
A classic and a particular favourite of mine. Probably my favourite of the old tactical shooters, alongside Rainbow Six and Arma/Operation Flashpoint. Nothing like deep immersion in the gameplay to get you invested in its setting. Winning the pitched final battle and beating the game feels like a personal victory as much as a fictional one.
I played this game when I was younger since it was one of the games my dad had on his computer. Returning to it nearly fifteen years later, I was blown away by the relative difficulty playing the campaign. I never played it when I was younger and ran around in quick missions killing bad guys instead.
However, I can safely say that while this game can be a little punishing early on, you really come to grips with the gameplay loop by the mid-game. Strategy is a key component, but it's nothing too complex. You just need to load your squad up with the necessary equipment to complete the mission and treat every corner like there's an enemy around it. Taking your time will save you lots of unnecessary deaths.
That said, the enemy AI can be simultaneously cracked, and relatively braindead. You may miss a shot with a sniper and then get domed by a guy with an AK from quite a distance, or you can gun one guy down around a corner and watch his squad mates walk right up only for the same fate to befall them. Your AI teammates have a similar outlook also. Sometimes they can clean house, and other times they'll get absolutely rekt even if you positioned them well; your teammates are an AI gamble.
Still, this was a very fun and rewarding game. I've yet to play the two expansions, but I've got them ready to download and play shortly. This game could be considered like a budget singleplayer ARMA, with less customization and a little bit of RTS thrown in the mix too. A unique blend that serves to be a semi-realistic recreation of modern warfare...at least for its time.
A sublime tactical military shooter. Back in the days, this used to be the game we used to play as friends through conference calls and such. The story is a military story like any other, and not important in the slightest.
The gameplay is difficult, and needs either good tactics, or good communication among the players playing the game. In single player, you control your entire team consisting of riflemen, demolition experts, snipers and supports through well put-together military set pieces. You can have 6 of them divided among 3 teams, with all deaths being permanent for the entirety of the rest of the campaign - which provides an additional layer of difficulty. This is even more accentuated in later levels since your chosen operatives actually gain skill points throughout the campaign, if you manage to keep them alive. At the elite difficulty, the enemy AI does have near aim-bot levels of accuracy, which necessitates use of stealth - I won't consider this as one of the positives though, especially since they seem to be able to shoot through tank surfaces sometimes with 360 no-scope pinpoint headshots. Some pathing issues were encountered in which some operatives will just refuse to moves at all unless you manually control them.
This game isn't easy, and may even seem kind of unfair at times. But it sure is a testament to the uniqueness of gameplay in a genre that is defined by its 'reskin' nature. It does scratch the itch of both strategy and fps to a very satisfactory point.
