About the Game

!Hailing All Frequencies!

Beware space travellers! Surviving aboard the Tin Can is no trivial matter and can get quite frantic. Without a good look at the systems surrounding you, your onboard manual and patience, the only thing awaiting you is a cold (or hot) cosmic death.
Consider yourselves warned. Good luck!

"In space, tech support can't hear you scream!"

Get your hands dirty!

"What a mess! The oxygen generator refuses to start up...I hope it's just the fuse cutting down the power and not some kind of issue with the atomic pile!"

  • All the systems inside your escape pod are made up of many different components, from fuses to air filters. They are all interconnected and have their own critical function.

Listen to your body!

"My vision has been blurry for a while now and it's getting worse! I really need to find that leak before I pass out!"

  • When all your systems are failing, in the dark, only the sound of your heartbeat and your shallow breathing will alert you of your imminent death. O², CO², atmospheric pressure, and temperature are realistically simulated for maximum immersion.

Your life hangs by a thread...don't lose focus!

"These incomprehensible error codes again!? Where is the damn manual? This pod’s a mess! Ah! Here it is!"

  • The manual inside your pod is filled with detailed information that could very well save your life.

Plan ahead!

"What a view! Is it me or it is getting hot in here, though?"

  • From asteroid fields to nebulae, these cosmic monsters will wreak havoc on your systems and won’t give you a lot of time to breathe...

Good luck!

Strong Points

  • Manage pod systems down to every single component.
  • Numerous systems which all have their own unique function and serve to ensure your survival. Every system is interconnected, from the oxygen generator to the emergency lights.
  • Over a dozen different components, all having their own specific function and causing different problems when damaged. Ex : Defective buttons won’t trigger properly when pressed, while faulty electrical connectors won’t deliver enough power.
  • Organic failures thanks to the simulated nature of resources and components inside the game. You will have to figure out what is wrong and retrace failures back to the source.
  • Dismantle, swap and fix anything inside the pod.
  • Realistic management of vital resources, such as oxygen, carbon dioxide, temperature and radiation. There are no arbitrary numbers here. The levels of these resources required for survival are based on real life!
  • An onboard manual providing detailed information about your escape pod.
  • Real medical symptoms instead of health bars. For example, hypoxia (lack of oxygen) will make you breathe faster and stronger, will make your vision blurry and will slow down your movements until you fall unconscious.
  • Cosmic events will strike your pod and will have different types of impact on its systems. From flying near the surface of a star that will cause overheating to asteroid fields that will pierce your hull, you need to anticipate and deal with the situations as they come to avoid certain death.

Background:

As a random member of your colony's space program, you leave Mars aboard a large transport ship, only for its reactor to go critical in the middle of your journey to new horizons. All your time spent in the simulator did not prepare you for such a dire situation! Now, drifting in your escape pod, without any FTL capabilities, you realize that an easy way out was not included. Use your own wits to fix systems in a similar way you would fix and build your own PC, by swapping and fixing individual components. With a bit of luck, you might be able to finally find a safe haven.

The alarm on my reactor wouldn't stop beeping. So I yanked out the buzzer and it stopped.
I'm available for hire, Harvard.

Jokes aside, the game does have its complexity yes, although not as much as some sources make it out to be. The major functionalities of each of your modules is condensed in specific objects, so you won't be rewiring electricals, soldering circuits or be looking for a specific breaker in your power box. You got the connector to your main grid, 2 electric safety devices, a processor chip and so on. The difficulty lies less in the complexity of precisely locating and thinking of how to solve the issue at hand, but rather quickly finding the defect part and deciding whether it's worth tossing into the repair-o-matic and if necessary figuring out which other parts to sacrifice for spares. While also under time pressure of certain death.

So while it is fun once you got the systems down, getting there is another question. The new player experience is a little rough, there is a tutorial although it only covers the basics and you're left to fend for yourself once all the errors and events start happening. Now I don't have a problem with that itself, i mean you are a janitor after all with little to no technical experience, tossed into a bottom of the barrel escape pod, interesting concept. The problem is the "manual" leaves some to be desired. It only scratches the surface for most things (i still don't know what exactly the fuses and transformers do) and my biggest problem with it: it does not cover any of the possible events you might encounter. While I'm not asking for a full on guide here, I really would have appreciated some notes telling me in advance that cold novas can severely hinder power production, black holes would mess with your pressure etc.
They could be a little cryptic to preserve that "whoa" effect when first encountering said events but just some information as to not leave you completely in the dark.

The learning cliff aside, it is a fun game overall and i am looking forward to future updates with potentially more complexity to the systems.

It took a little trial and error, but this is an extremely fun little puzzle room. once you have the basics down, it's a pretty simple little game, but more than worth the $10 I got it for. Play the demo and if the tutorial levels interest you, it'll probably be worth the full $20 for you.

Tin Can
https://youtu.be/kCp1781hrdY?si=aa2TsvSyf1yLrS0p
Ep walked the earth with purple skin with his friend who shall remain nameless, Ep made it his desire to drink every Pepsi.
Ep died to a land mine disguised as a Pepsi drink now Ep is gone forever...
A purple hue beneath the sun,
One alien left, the journey’s done.
Two came down to taste the thrill,
Now one walks earth, the world so still.
Every can cracked open wide,
Every sip, they laughed, they cried.
But now it’s just me, alone in the haze,
Wandering earth in a Pepsi craze.
Purple tears fall to the ground,
Echoes of laughter, no longer around.
The fizz fades fast, the sky turns gray,
I lost my friend in a world of decay.
We danced on rooftops, stars in sight,
Shared every drink under neon lights.
But fate was cruel, it tore us apart,
Left a void deep inside my heart.
Your laughter’s gone, your glow is too,
But the earth remembers the taste of you.
I walk these streets, I sip and mourn,
In a Pepsi world, my soul is torn.
Purple tears fall to the ground,
Echoes of laughter, no longer around.
The fizz fades fast, the sky turns gray,
I lost my friend in a world of decay.
Each can I open, I hear your voice,
In every bubble, there’s a choice.
Do I keep walking, or do I stay?
In this Pepsi world where you fade away?
Now I’m just a shadow, a ghost in the glow,
Searching for meaning in the fizz I know.
Purple alien, forever apart,
Carrying you in my soda-filled heart.
Purple tears in a Pepsi stream,
Lost in the bubbles of a broken dream.

TL;DR Game is obsessed with 'realism' at the expense of fun, its brutally hard but has unsatisfying gameplay, and there’s no learning curve or meaningful progression
Not worth $20

Tin Can is too caught up in it's own version of "Realism" to bother with fun. If this were a no-nonsense simulation of a real world machine or situation, that could justify the brutal difficulty and minimal gameplay loop. But it's not something real. It's a $20 game about being thrown into space in a pod that (no joke) can fatally malfunction within 30 seconds of launching with no way to fix it. There is no learning from your death, there is no being able to prepare better (more on that later), and none of the gameplay feels satisfying even when you're winning

I've been trying this game since it first launched in early access, but only recently bought it after it's 1.0 release. During that time it was an unpolished mess. But it wasn't bad for Early Access. After 1.0 though, no excuse for it. Items can phase through walls still, the graphics are quite ass during the intro, the menu's are still a mess, and the progression is just "Spend enough time alive and you unlock things" which would be fine if that gameplay was actually fun, or if the unlocks were worth it
The gameplay loop boils down to;

  1. You have 30 seconds to gather items
  2. Toss your items in the pod and launch
  3. Maintain the pod while you wait for the beacon timer to tick down
  4. After the timer runs out you are rescued and unlock a new part to bring along with you on the next run

And the problem is;

  • There isn't enough time on the clock to go through what the pod is missing, and it's usually missing a lot. The pod also comes with it's own randomly generated stash of spare parts. You CAN cannibalize parts from other systems on the ship, but that only goes so far until you have to stop breathing to keep the beacon running. You might bring batteries, fuses, and air filters and end up with no On/Off switches or CRT monitors through no fault of your own

  • You can only carry 2 parts at a time, and since you won't be able to check what you need, you'll never be able to do any prep that matters. You'll have to hope and pray that the randomly generated parts in the pod and whatever you grab is enough. Despite the game putting so much significance on this mad-dash for parts, RNG means it can end up being completely meaningless

  • 90% of your time will be spent waiting for things to break and then fixing them before it kills you. And some things don't kill you, but might as well. If you didn't get enough parts to keep your batteries charged, then the beacon may power down and make rescue impossible. But this won't end your game, just make playing it pointless until you restart

  • [*]The most fun part of this game is when you manage to succeed in spite of everything going on. Like playing Twister with mechanical engineering. But you achieve that through hours and hours (don't let my playtime fool you, I've got about 20 hours of experience) of unfun, unrewarding, brutal learning. This is one of those games that takes 20 hours to start being fun

Death is usually instant and gives no indication of what lead up to it, beyond what you can gather from before you died. If you didn't keep your face glued to the computer that may or may not have enough parts to work, you won't know what system failed and caused a domino effect into your death. If you do buy this game I recommend you play Sandbox mode to learn the visual signs of each part failing before even trying the main gamemode

This game does not effectively teach the player, and the concept of "unlocking" parts of the pods makes it nearly impossible for me to survive since my oxygen runs out, i have no backup tanks, and my entire o2 conversion system is completely empty, meaning I can't even refill my current tanks. This game needs an active guide with specific pointers to show players what to do, rather than relying on a poorly designed tutorial that fails to prepare you for the survival mode

I really wanted to like this but:
- The ice nebula is boring for new players. I get to sit in the dark and twiddle my thumbs, moving around batteries to keep basic functions going
- The mad dash minute to grab parts isn't fun. The items that are present in the pod are already random. The placement of the items in the storage shelves is random. What choice do I have? With random on top of random, I'm not exercising a meaningful decision because I don't know where things will be or what will be in the pod.
- I wish I was doing this with friends, with more systems and stuff going on, more tasks. The immersion this game could offer would so cool, and the communication between friends would make this feel very rewarding.
- The tutorial fails to really explain everything that's going on.
- The shortness of the gamemode makes it difficult to get comfortable and start to work with your space. I wanted it to be longer, with problems creeping up slowly, rather than manifesting at what feels like ludicrous speeds.
- Could you offer a narrative mode that lets us run the gamut of scenarios on offer, with increasing difficulties and layers of problems going on? I just don't want to have to go through layers of randomness, just to sit in the dark for six minutes and then do it again except for 8 minutes or whatever next time, and so on and so on.

The core of this game is good, but the systems around it like the prep phase and short minute increasing difficulty spans kind of sours the experience.

A couple of hours in and I am enjoying Tin Can, I am not good at it, but I am enjoying it.
So far I have not experienced any of the bugs other people have commented on, and none of the design issues raised have impacted my enjoyment.
It is, for me, part puzzle game, part stress management program. Keeping it together whilst the 3rd alarm goes off, your vision is blurry obscuring the manual's codes, the emergency lighting has come on and you are wondering just how bad your CO2 situation is as your character pants worryingly is par for the course.

I think I will be buying it for a couple of friends to see if they can keep it together better than I.

I wanted to like this but at this current phase , I can not even get past the first part of the tutorial due to glitched or non-spawned components needed for the oxygen unit. I hope this gets fixed so i can play this simulator . Thumbs down for now , due to bugged tutorial.

I honestly was expecting something like 60 seconds. Could be made easier or harder depending what you are enduring and what parts to managed to snag. but in reality you just need to memorize what parts are missing because its each mission is the same. only difference in each run is that the spare parts cabinet has different components. nothing else changes.

Fun gameplay, immersive visuals, challenging difficulty. Awesome game overall.

The learning curve is steep at the beginning, especially when you still need to read error codes to figure out what's wrong. However once you know the workings of the tin can by heart it gets really fun: keeping eyes and ears open for signs of problem while doing resource management.

I recommend starting out at the easy (peaceful(?)) difficulty and learn by experience as you make mistakes (and die) along the way. The manual may have some answers, but hands-on experience and experimentation ("hmm, this transformer thingy doesn't seem to be doing anything, maybe the system will be okay without-- WHERE'S THE FIRE EXTINGUISHER") is the best teacher, and is where the fun is.

I did encounter some bugs mentioned in older reviews, but at this point the devs have already fixed them and thus are no longer relevant.

10/10, would become a janitor in a space station again.

Frustrating. I love frantic survival games but in this one, going from the demo to the first couple of Rescue missions felt like slamming into a cliff. When I got from the tutorial into the main game, here's a few questions which weren't really answered:

* is the main computer important? other than providing diagnosis, do the other systems require it to be online? (errors on the oxygen system seem to imply that it's important for functionality)
* what parts does the main computer need to come online? which part goes where?
* is this information in the manual? (nope, idk why but it's nowhere to be found)
* what information can we get from smoke and particle effects outside the ship? should we interpret those or ignore them?
* what parts does the repair station need? (we use the repair station in the tutorial, but this too turns out to be a dead end to try to get working in the first levels)
* what do we do if a system is malfunctioning yet displays no error code?? the tutorial never covered THAT
* is it important to engage with the one-minute dash at the start of every respawn, randomly guessing which components may help us figure out the answers to the above?
* if I need more power, which systems are the most power-hungry? (this too is missing from the manual!)
* which machine is the temperature computer? (others like the oxygen and CO2 machines are labelled; there doesn't seem to be text outside of the CRT indicating the temperature machine)

Of course these questions will all seem self-evident to someone who's been playing the game for a few hours, but once I learned that it wasn't possible to learn the answers during play -- that i'd have to die repeatedly while reading the manual and doing trial and error, or put the game into no-challenge mode, or read a wiki -- the sense of pressure to survive was hard to rekindle.

The loss of tension is made worse by the one-minute dash at the start of every respawn. I presume maybe this could be fun later, when we have every component and the systems memorized, but until then it's simply random guessing and busywork; it simply doesn't qualify as gameplay until we have it all memorized. This makes deaths quite frustrating when the player is stuck due to the absence of information.

Frantically diving into the manual during emergencies to find the scraps of information I need sounds *fun*. But realizing that the manual is too sparse and the information isn't there makes the beginning experience of this game too frustrating. Trial and error alone isn't gameplay.

I really think this game could hugely benefit from gathering more feedback from new players on the first couple of Rescues -- i'm sure many players will breeze through these levels, but for the ones that don't get lucky with their first guesses, find where their friction points are.

This game is just for me.

There is no better feeling than recovering a rescue that seems like all hope is lost. My atomic pile AND gravity was broken down, and I was fumbling around in the dark for what felt like forever. Rationing the small amount of power I had left, I was just barely keeping the air breathable as I scrambled to try and get this damn reactor to work again. I figured it out at the last second (It was the on switch, fml), and every buzzer went off at once as I powered the pile back up. (Better than the bitter silence of space and broken machinery)

So that's how I saved my 30 minute rescue mission and somehow recovered after I accepted my fate. This game is a rush.

Please do not waste your time or your money. The game is very buggy and/or too difficult to really enjoy. Concept is good, execution is terrible. Specifically, items seem to just disappear if you click the wrong mouse button while an item is in your hand. The escape pods "manual", such that it is, flickers so badly when you open it up in the game that you can't read it. I could go on, but then I would be wasting even more time on this useless game.

So buggy I can't even complete the tutorials first task due to items glitching out of existence and flickering all over the field of view. The pump for the oxygen generator simply vanishes when you try to place it in it's slot.

Great and fun game. Also rather addictive.
Requires a bit of a learning curve but its not too steep after the tutorial and the first or second career mission.
Main thing is that its a trial and error thing but thats whats great about it.

There are also plenty of events you get to know throughout the career and you progressively unlock more systems. Tho whats interesting is that the unlocking just has these systems be repaired from the start. I could still repair the repair station at the beginning and use it like normal. Just costs a lot of materials. The only thing you really need to hard unlock are batteries but those are the first mission.

The main challenge I find when learning the game is to figure out what components are broken. Took a while to discover that broken ones have a slightly different model.

I thought it would be like a roguelike or longer survival game. But what this really is is a reverse speedrun. e.g. try to survive as long as possible.

The only progression is the Rescue mode where you unlock the next level and a new part for the next rescue mission (there are a total of 6 rescue missions)

It is a very nice game, but I don't think it is worth 17.99$
I got it for 5.4€ and that's a good deal.
Try the demo and to see if the game is for you.

I like the looks and concept, but the movements feels a but clunky.

The ultra-wide support is ok, there is a button that gets behind the other UI. The bigger annoyance with the UI is that some text here and there is in Arial and there are no proper graphic settings.

I think the tutorial is missing how to handle the different events. (like adding an in-game book about possible events and their effect on the ship.)

This game could be expanded into an excellent game.
Stuff like progression, upgrades, and more ships would be very interesting to see.
A co-op version with some progression would sell very well I believe.

Love it so far. I like the intensity when things are going wrong and you just can't figure out what's going on or why. Very interesting challenge.

Something to improve is the beginning where you are gathering components before time runs out. Either make sprint faster or add like 10 seconds. That would be fantastic.

My record in ranked is 1:25:44. Also my first and only attempt once I completed the Rescue mode.

Got annoyed my record didn't go on the leader board for some reason.

The rescue mode is the most fun, it's a fun game to play at the start when you don't know what you're doing.

It doesn't take that long to work out, after about 5 hours you will have worked out everything and realise it's a resource management game. There isn't much else it has to offer but I enjoyed the concept and found it unique.

fun game, but there are some inaccuracies such as the power output of the atomic pile being measured using an ammeter and very minor collision errors that can be fixed by walking backwards

neat idea sadly its more of a nightmare to play more then anything as movement feels horrible and is slow its even worse in zero gravity mixed with no way to save systems and a terrible flash light. if the game breaks for example my repair station couldn't be interacted with so no repairs could be done the whole run. Error codes are just thrown in the book at random so a hunt as you look for three different codes that are at start middle and end of the book while its three things that have to do with power.

The idea is enjoyable, but it wasn't made well. Design choices for gravity loss essentially is why I don't enjoy the game. That and the fact hitting the try again button crashes the game

While in 0G:

Anything you grabs orientation wont be "normal". Its twisted to the position you picked it up at. Why would this even be a mechanic in the game?? Does the dev not have wrists????

The way you drift around slowly is so annoying. Worst part is while there are handles to grip, the dev didn't program in "space is up, ctrl is down". So you can grab on but have to awkwardly drive into position.

Interesting game, but too many issues to recommend buying it, even discounted. At one point I had a fire that kept happening in the "rescue" mode, but when I picked up a fire extinguisher it wouldn't point in the proper direction, making putting out the fire impossible. I just couldn't progress.

Wish this wasn't the case - seems like it could have been a very cool game.

It's a simple, a bit slow game at times, but a delightful puzzle game.

Game seems interesting, but there just is too many issues and shortcomings,
Yes the game is supposedly extremely realistic and based on trial and error, but there isn't enough information to help you get by.
After a few rough goings in the rescue missions, i was just stuck in a constant loop of having no idea what is wrong or how to identify the issue, let alone how to fix it.
Sure i've run out of power, but is it because its been overloaded? under-loaded?, did i do something wrong?
perhaps if you have copious amounts of free time and willing to find supplementary information
Main issues i found
-Items would just Disappear out hand, which is an instant run-ender if its the Manual or any other important item,
-Held items get stuck in Weird orientations with no way of reorienting/moving (which is a big problem especially with fires, since can't position/aim fire extinguisher at fire
-Sprint is barely faster than walking which makes the starting item collection phase infuriating
-Manual gives very basic information of components and machines, but not a breakdown of what machine needs to run/ how to identify issues without power

Clunky controls and a poor implementation for what could have been a really fun game idea. Too bad.

Totally worth the six bucks if you like frantic puzzle solving under pressure and don't mind dying over and over and over and over and over. My ADHD brain likes the rush.

Edit: Just realized $6 is sale price. I'd say it's worth the $20 too, though that's probably the most I'd be willing to pay, just because it is short and simple.

Rad! The complexity and interaction of systems is a fun time. At first you feel very lost, but pretty quickly you'll learn how to scavenge from one system to fix another, where parts go, etc.

It can be a little boring at times, but if you enjoy dealing with many different systems in a stressful scenario, you'll like this. It's a well built game and I don't think I've encountered any bugs at all. It's enjoyable but doesn't exactly have too much content so don't expect to get dozens of hours out of this game
