Game has a lot of objectives and stuff to do for hours which is amazing. If you ever played Dead Rising or The Last Of Us then this game is for you. From the crafting, to the environment, to the story, to the zombies etc this game has been fun. If you're looking for an apocalyptic open world game then look no further than Days Gone, open road to explore and help you survive.
This is a semi old game and its still one of my favs to this day. Takes the zombies to a whole new level and the story is just too good! I would rate this game a solid 9/10.
Would probably give this game a "Mixed" rating if possible. The game starts off with a kinda weak character that takes awhile to get a bunch of quality of life features through a leveling system. Your bike needs fuel every few minutes in the early game. When you get the upgrades it feels good however. The story is generally good but there are a few parts where it drags it's feet. Hordes are kinda fun once you get used to them. A lot of the bad tropes of open world games but Days Gone is a lot less egregious than Ubislop puts out. In summary good game not great. Don't regret playing but it's not really life-changing or have me craving for more.
Uhg...where do I begin?
Let's start with how I came to purchase this game. Like many I was sucked into the marketing of Sony prestige titles, or the promise of greatness: Cinematic storytelling, deep gameplay mechanics, excellent writing and voice-acting - basically the blueprint of a successful and beloved AAA title in 2018. I bought this game assuming I would at least be able to enjoy it.
And did I? Well, it's complicated. But you've seen the thumbs-down, so overall I wouldn't say I recommend it, and the reason for that is so much more than just what Days Gone has to offer.
Let's start with the mediocre engagement loop. The story, the world design and the gameplay - They are all serviceable. But after 21 hours of playing I found myself wondering: Is that it? Even if it gets better afterwards, what was all the padding that I played to get to the point when it does "eventually get better"? That's when I realised what Days Gone, like other Sony prestige titles such as God of War, is about - A dripfed and bare-minimuming of everything to keep the player engaged. Doing just enough things fine (good even) so that you keep playing: The gameplay is tense, but repetitive and barely evolves; the world is beautiful, but ultimately static and unresponsive to the choices you make as a player; the skill progression is there, but ultimately just keeping skills locked behind hours of padded playtime so that you have something tangible to work towards at the expense of moment-to-moment gameplay.
The whole game feels like a promise more than what it actually delivers. And this ties into my feeling that most of the game is just padding: Forcing you to ride constantly from point A to point B, repeating the same 3 mission types between different NPCs - the game does not "take it slow", it IS slow because that's the whole point. The story does not emerge from the mundane tasks but is written around them. Forcing yourself through the drivel does little to deepen your connection with the world or its characters, it's exposure therapy through excessive contact: Do I really need to clear bandit camps for a slaver 100 times to finally "see where she is coming from"? Can I not live with the fact that Deacon is just a morally grey character like TLOU Joel in a mission or two?
And the worst sin of it all, is the signature Sony "walk-and-talks". So much of this game is just me following NPCs while they exposition dump. This is not cinematic, this is just your classic telling not showing, and masquerading padding as cinematic story-teling. There is nothing more immersion breaking than getting the acute sense of what I'm doing while playing a game. In this case, it is pushing the left joystick foward while listening to awkward lines being delivered by someone whom I couldn't quite decide if he's a good voice actor or not.
I think after Spider Man and God of War, and now this, I've finally wised up and realised something distinct about these Sony open-world titles: They are not just casual games because you can't just listen to a podcast and sip on some coffee while mindless smashing boxes like in a Lego Game. They demand your time, attention and recognition, yet ultimately they do so little to iterate on existing games that they just end up feeling milquetoast and completely uninteresting.
So while I sometimes I had fun playing this, I'm afraid I won't be finishing the game. The game does not get better, the story does not take its time withe the set up - It is a game that was padded, and a story that is too constricted by an uninspired gameplay loop than it deserves.
Good game. The gameplay is fun. Fighting hordes is great. The overall setting, the graphics and the scenery are all good. I would like to play the sequel.
There are some issues with the dialogue, story (stuff happens without any prior introduction) and direction. As with most games of this genre, the side quests are copy paste of each other; they get really boring after a while.
There are also things they could have done that would have made the game-play more efficient. For example you are able to pick up multiple items off of the ground if they are near each other, but you have to loot bodies one by one, which becomes a huge drag.
7.8/10
I spent a ton of time on Days Gone — not because it was extremely interesting, but because the game turned out to be overly drawn out. To be honest, it was the storyline that kept making me return to the game again and again — I was damn curious to find out what happened to Sarah, the "Lost Lake" camp, and that bastard Shizzo. You know, I really enjoy games and movies where traitors are punished for their vile deeds one way or another. Probably, Shizzo gave me the most emotions...But let's get back to the gameplay. Unfortunately, the developers crammed too much into the game — too many freaks, too many nests, too many ambush camps, and a lot of repetitive missions. While at the beginning of the game all elements feel novel and spark interest, by the middle of the game they start to become annoying.Want really cool weapons? Be prepared to spend a ton of time on numerous repetitive camp missions. The most effective weapon against freak hordes (napalm) is only given at the end of the game. And O’Brian's missions? Just a stupid ten identical missions, with the most interesting one being the very last. Overall, I liked the game, but the developers clearly overdid it with the content, and the terrain of the game world is also a bit monotonous, but in general, the game deserves attention. Well done, gentlemen! The couch critic in me gives Days Gone 8 out of 10. WHAT I LIKED: Plot; Atmosphere of post-apocalypse; Graphics and character animations; Voice acting and dialogues; Extermination of hordes of freaks. WHAT I DIDN'T LIKE: Excess of content; Prolonged plot.
Great game! It's strong points are the story, atmosphere/ambience and graphics. The game has improved quite well performance wise, compared to back when i played it on the ps4 on it's release day(26/april/2019).
It's weaker points are the types of missions(often repetitive), human npc's(superficial/easy to deal with), combat mechanics (bland, not impactful) and it's difficulty(still easily done on hardest difficulty).
For the last point, i think it's mainly because they only seem to increase the damage the npc's do on a harder difficulty. Not making their behaviour more complex. Don't get me wrong, i'm a huge fan of this game but would like to see it become even better.
I know that Days Gone does not want to be like The Last Of Us but rather be it's own thing. But still, it could really benefit from some of the gameplay mechanics and less repetitive and more fluid mission gameplay seen in The Last Of Us.
-(NPC's)
For instance, The Last Of Us has human NPC's that really communicate with eachother to find out your position and will try to flank you. While in Days Gone, the human npc's instantly know where you are when detected and don't move around a lot.
-(missions)
Mission gameplay in Days gone often felt like a checklist to fulfill. Like kill all 14 marauders and find the bunker. This was then th case for all the camps on the map that needed clearing. I would have loved to have seen more interactive and brain teaser like objectives within a camp to clear it and it then being different and original for each camp alone. Without the checklists.
-(Combat mechanics)
The combat mechanics were quite bland, felt somewhat unpolished and unimpactful. For it being an serious apocalyptic story set in an ominous world, the combat mechanics also felt quite arcade like.
-For example, once an enemy was hit by a bullet and died, little/no push back from the bullet force was seen, minimal gore(little to no blood, head or limbs just seem to evaporate in an instant as if teleported away). It felt more as if i was just clicking on the enemies with my crosshair and would sack to the ground when dealt the final blow. As if the bullet just went straight through instead of impacting.
-Melee combat felt unpolished. Often if the distance to the enemy was not close enough for the hit animation, Deacon just kinda seemed to glide for 30-40 cm towards the enemy and then hit it. There wasn't much variation in hit animations either, so when hitting many enemies after one another it would become tedious repetitive.
-The combat HUD(Health bar, crosshair, hitmarkers, weapon icon and ammo etc.) felt out of place, visually wise. For a game with such a serious tone, i would have liked to have seen a more fitting hud. With a more realistic, minimal and darker tone as seen in The last of us game series. These brighter coloured and rectangle like hud icons with the hitmarkers and bland/ unpolished and unimpactful combat mechanics made it feel as if it were an arcade game. While it would really benefit from being more realistic/fluid and darker or gruesome.
Last thing i would want to add is that i was quite disappointed with the fact they chose an arcade themed dlc(challenge mode) and not story dlc as it is a game mainly built around the enormous storyline .
gameplay, combat, resource collecting design is boring
Great game in general, I've lived in bend Oregon for almost 5 years now and its such a cool trait to know that there's a game based on my hometown and that you could meet the devs in real time if you just go down to the old mills, i was so excited to see so many references of central Oregon in the beginning of the game, only issue i have is that the story's really shallow and kind of predictable at the beginning, but the more you play the better the story gets. Now that might just be me because before getting the game i just finished the last of us part 1 and i thought the graphics and the story was a lot better, but there is more weapon variety in days gone and its an open world with a pretty big map unlike the last of us, id definitely recommend this game if you live anywhere near central Oregon.
It was a really great game; the only problem was the part where you had to kill the zombie hordes — it was almost impossible and really started to get on my nerves. But overall, the story and gameplay were amazing
Slow, repetitive, slow and repetitive. Did I mention it's extremely repetitive?
No idea why it's held in such high regard. Slow and repetitive.
The game takes a little while to get going. And some of the ancillary characters are annoying. But the play loop is addictive once the world opens up. The bike is great, if you loved your horses in RDR2 (I did.) The hordes in this game are a totally unique experience. I wish they'd make a sequel, with different writers. But I've played it twice on PS5 already, and have 85 hours on Steam (AToR) so, I must love it! Stealthing RIPpers is pretty dope too. Grab it!
Such a good game. It hits so hard, absolutely a classic.
It's a legit PC port too, it's actually better than the original and we're still getting improvements made today. If you like survival horror, bikers or a good post Apocalyptic Zombie game... then you need this game.
Support based devs.
I find this more enjoyable than I do the Last of Us, not saying those are bad games, but I find this much more enjoyable to play
I started playing the game for the first time three weeks ago after the update was launched, and just completed the story. What an epic and awesome game! I love the story and how it builds up, and I love the unique characters! It has been really many years since I played such an awesome game, that pulled me into its world as much as Days Gone. This is one of the best games of all time in my opinion period!
No matter how many times i play through this it never gets old. I only wish we could've gotten a 2nd game to continue the story but its probably for the best we didn't.
I honestly don't know where to begin, but I struggled to finish this game because of how boring it was.
As a zombie game, it’s visually nice, and the idea of using a motorcycle for travel is unique, eye-catching, and refreshing. But the game suffers from many issues.
The AI in this game should really be called "artificial stupidity" — especially the human enemies. The zombies are actually smarter than them. The world is large, but nearly empty. There’s not much to do besides collecting items and clearing out zombie zones to unlock upgrades.
The story is painfully slow and boring. I had to stop playing five times before I could finally finish it due to boredom — and that alone made me dislike the game. Most of the weapons are terrible, and the fuel system for the motorcycle is tedious and annoying. Worse yet, every military outpost requires fuel to restore power — and you have to go searching for it every single time. It becomes a chore.
The world and story are overwhelmingly dull.
That said, there are a few positives: the zombie hordes you can fight are intense and fun, and the motorcycle — while flawed — is a creative and enjoyable idea. There are also some “nest clearing” sections which are mildly entertaining, but only in the beginning. Everything else wears out quickly.
To be honest, I don’t recommend this game at all — especially if you don’t have the patience for boredom.
Days Gone Remastered gives Bend Studio’s open-world zombie survival game a second chance to impress on modern hardware. With improved performance, visual upgrades, and faster load times, the remastered version smooths over some of the technical bumps that held the original back. But while the fresh coat of paint helps, it can't completely mask the uneven pacing and narrative issues that still linger beneath the surface.
Running at a steady 60 frames per second with 4K support, Days Gone Remastered finally feels like the game it was always meant to be. Gone are the stutters, frame drops, and overly long loading screens that plagued the PS4 version. The dynamic weather, dense forests, and terrifying hordes of Freakers look more immersive than ever, especially during large-scale encounters at night. The remaster doesn’t overhaul the game’s art direction, but the improved lighting and texture work make a noticeable difference in bringing its Pacific Northwest setting to life.
What Days Gone gets right, it still gets really right. The horde mechanics remain a standout—hundreds of Freakers flooding toward you in terrifying waves, forcing you to plan every bullet, Molotov, and escape route. Riding Deacon’s motorcycle across the rugged, desolate landscape continues to be an oddly therapeutic loop: scavenge fuel, upgrade parts, and keep moving. The remaster’s higher frame rate improves aiming and responsiveness in a way that makes both stealth and combat far more enjoyable than before.
However, repetition sets in around the mid-game. Many missions follow a formula of “ride here, kill this, listen to a radio call.” The side quests lack depth, and while the core systems (bike, upgrades, combat) are solid, they don’t evolve enough to stay fresh across a 30-40 hour runtime.
Deacon St. John is a character who grows on you, even if his gruff biker persona feels heavy-handed early on. His emotional arc, centered around loss, loyalty, and survival, hits some genuinely moving beats—especially in the quieter, more personal moments. Unfortunately, the dialogue often veers into melodrama, and some characters lean into cliché.
The remaster doesn’t revise any of the original’s story beats or structure, which means the uneven pacing and jarring tonal shifts are still present. It’s a story that tries to be Sons of Anarchy meets The Last of Us, and while it doesn’t always hit the mark, there’s ambition behind it.
Days Gone Remastered doesn’t reinvent the original, but it does give it the technical polish it sorely needed. For newcomers, it’s the definitive way to experience an often-overlooked survival game with big ideas and even bigger zombie hordes. For returning players, the upgrades may not justify a second full playthrough unless you were already a fan. It's still not perfect—but with smoother controls, faster loading, and better visuals, the journey feels far more worthwhile.
Not a classic, but a cult favorite with enough improvements to deserve another spin of the tires.
Rating: 8/10
was perfect, now terrible. do not update games that dont need it. or at-least give the option to play the original
Look the game overall is fine, fun enough mechanics and an ok example of the form, nothing special or unique, but also not terrible.
However, it has the distinction of being the game with the most tedious protagonist I have suffered through listening to whine and complain for 50 hours.
Deacon is a self centred tosser who in any real apocalypse would have been taken out behind the woodshed 3 days in just so no-one would have to put up with him anymore. The most realistic part of the game is that his GF didn't bother looking for him for 2 years.
I slogged through it because I wanted to see the end and was hoping for a heroic sacrifice to know Deacon died, unfortunately no such luck. Had forgotten the game even existed until the recent DLC update, hope to return to that state soon.
The game is almost perfect. You will never regret this purchase if you like Walking Dead / Post Apocalypse style games. Highly recommended !!!
Came for the zombies.
Stayed for the bike.
Crashed the bike.
Ran from zombies.
10/10 would panic again.
New update is terrible. At least let us revert to the previous version ffs...
Solid post-apocalypse zombie shooter, way better than most. Remastered graphics are great. Top tier game that doesn't shill for the cringe 'woke narrative'. 10/10.
Had this game for years before the DLC came out. The DLC adds a bunch of bonus content that I will work toward later. Makes me extremely happy that this game is getting more love.
This game is like the last of us but better. Also, it's not woke.
Why after last updates this game became so slow and absolutely unresponsive during riding that even driver update doesn't fix freezes? Now riding a bike became a torture, it feels like you ride underwater. Also graphics look pale and blure comparing to the original game. The OG looked so beautiful, the remastered one is so dark and ugly.
Also the original game was perfectly optimized, now it sux. I've played this game through twice before. This was one of my favorite games and back at that time I left a good review but now I was trying to replay the game third time after last update and I am very dissapointed.
Sadly playing this game is no fun anymore.
Bring the optimization and colors back, you f%ing idiots!
Update installed. DLC installed. Game wont's go past the loading splash before the error report window pops up.
Verified files. Same result.
Uninstalled all files. Reinstalled the game and DLC. Still getting an error popup window after the splash screen appears.
Fix this trash.
i've heard many great things about this game. But at the moment i cant possibly recommend the game for purchase. Surprisingly i managed to play 6hrs at the time of this review, but that is not without constant crashes within 10-15 minutes of booting up the game. From my research, it seems im not the only player experiencing this issue. I have tried all the troubleshooting possible, and I am way over the system requirements, GPU drivers are up to date (I even rolled back), no overheating from CPU or GPU. So no i cannot recommend this game for purchase until the widespread issue is fixed,
Jesus Christ Sony........Why you had to blew $400 million developing that Concord abomination? A Days Gone 2 was the way to go, amazing game in every sense back in 2019 and today thanks to the Broken Road DLC.
Time to hit the road again! Oh.....What about using the Concord characters as freakers skins? Get something done with those $400 million!
The game is great, so good that I was going to do another playthrough. But with the April 24th "update" released the optimization and bug frequency has gotten SO MUCH WORSE. I played through originally on steam deck and maintained pretty consistent 40fps on medium settings, and now I get dips under 20 on low everything and constant stutters.
Either give an option to downgrade our version or come out with some patches to get performance back to what it was- the "upgrades" are not worth tanking the framerate.
Don't buy it. It can't load up anymore - game gets stuck loading a black screen and there is no fixes for it.
The game after the Remaster update won't launch I tried everything won't work
The newest update for days gone has bricked the game, I have not been able to play the game after the update, I get stuck on a black screen after the sony cinematic stops playing, please either fix this or let us revert to the previous version of the game
This was an amazing game. I loved every bit of it. I loved Horde Mode, I never tried perma-death mode though. And now it seems I'll never be able to try perma-death mode because for some reason greed has taken over. I'm honestly shocked to see content get stripped from them game and then resold to customers. I'm of course talking about Broken Road. It was a DLC on Playstation. When the PC port of Days Gone released it simply had the Broken Road content included in the base game. That is no longer the case. As of yesterday they stripped the Broken Road content from the game and are now ransoming it back for $10. It's strange to see something like this happen almost 4 years after a games release. Why was Broken Road content in it for nearly 4 years only to be taken away and have a price tag slapped on it? I don't think Bend is behind this so I'm not mad at the devs. I fully believe Sony is behind this trying to make money any way they can given their abysmall last couple of years. Fuck Sony.
After the new update, the game has started crashing. It takes forever for the PlayStation logo to load, and there's some stuttering. Once the game finally launches, it continues to stutter for a while, but then the stuttering eventually stops.
I started playing Days Gone way back on the PS4. With no love for the PS5, and once the PC port was released, I jumped back in — and it was glorious. I've finished it about four times already (including the PS4 playthroughs), and honestly, I have no complaints. The music and motorcycle rides are perfectly matched, and the combat — though a bit boring and repetitive in the late game — is still a lot of fun.
Fast forward to the latest major update. I saw the release notes and thought to myself, dang, it should look amazing on PC now with all the visual improvements.
Nah. The game doesn't even get past the intro cinematics. It simply crashes to desktop and does nothing else.
I would give this game a thumbs up any day, but right now it's completely unplayable — so it's a thumbs down until this gets fixed.
The game used to run very well and smoothly.
Now, after this update/cashgrab DLC, stutters everywhere.
If it ain't broke, don't fix it.
Why do these companies insist on doing this?
Have yet to be able to play the game since they released this poorly tested DLC. All drivers updated, fresh install, running on 12900-K and 3080Ti, 64GB DDR5, Gen 4 Samsung 980 PRO, game hard bricks on launch every time. Good job guys you really thought this one through.
One of the most slept on single player zombie survival games of all time! The story is AMAZING. The acting is superb. Sam Witwer KILLS the role as Deacon St John.
This game keeps surprising you the longer you play it. One of my favorites. If you've not played this game all the way through you are missing out on a fantastic game. One of the BEST!
Honestly, I feel this game is super underrated. The story really grabs you, and even though the gameplay doesn't do anything crazy new, it's solid and genuinely fun to play.
- Horde mechanics are pretty entertaining.
- You really feel your character getting stronger as you advance (new talents, perks, better gear, etc.).
- Characters are cool (some not so much). I even ended up liking some of them way more than I expected.
- The game has plenty of moments where you just get completely immersed.
- The storyline keeps you curious with mysteries and questions that gradually get answered.
- The bike is really well done, and its progression becomes more and more noticeable as you go through the game.
- It's kind of a bummer there's no sequel yet, especially since it totally felt set up for one.
If you get the chance, seriously give it a shot, it's totally worth it.
Game is broken and those that claim it isn't is just in pure fanboy denial.
Game's broken after the update.
one of the best zombie games made and one of the last good games before they started pushing lgbtq+2
After the update the overall graphics looks worse (looks like grid on distant grass and trees) and getting much higher GPU usage on Steam Deck. Now stable 40fps isn't possible with same details.
Not recommend on Steam Deck after the patch. If you want play on SD, download previous version of the game.
Days Gone Remastered (PC) gives the game a fresh coat of polish with smoother performance and sharper visuals. While some of the mission structure still feels repetitive, the atmosphere and Deacon’s journey are as gripping as ever.
Rating: 7.5/10
Video Gameplay - https://youtu.be/I0UH1tljVUY
If you can see past some bits of cringe you will find a real diamond in the rough. The combat is satisfying, the bike riding is fun, and the story hits hard. The ending feels rushed and falls off a bit but the ride itself is a very enjoyable experience. Sam Witwer does an excellent job playing a complex asshole that you end up loving.
Hope they make a DLC Story expansion to this game after this broken road DLC sells well after it comes out, and then they'll see that it will sell good and make the second game.
Gracias.
Very Underrated game it was well done and I enjoyed it from start to finish. I would love to see a sequel but I would not expect one based on its initial sales on PlayStation.
The story of the game is very beautiful. I hope that a second part will be released.
