As someone with real world experience, no, it isn't close to reality, but it does a good job of mimicking the time it takes to do certain jobs. Lifting the hoist up and down repeatedly, forgetting a part, missing something when putting it back together... all stuff that happens in the real shop. The fun is in buying salvage cars or auction cars and fixing them up. I love that you can also find cars in barns and junkyards... gotta have some jank if you're a real car enthusiast. It's a satisfying game if you like fixing up cars, and want something to relax with in the evenings.
Honestly out of all the things people get in to I've never been much in to cars but after this game I can honestly say that they are my new passion, learning how to dismantle them and mod them and the realism in the game is crazy! Even debating looking in to a qualification in mechanics because of how much I'm actually enjoying this game!
super fun and addicting always a joy to play
Great Game! Pretty accurate when it comes to building cars. A lot less messy and all the bolts come out with a little WD. Well worth the price if you like working on cars!
Good game. I wish these games were more polished, optimized.
The performance really suffers. Switching to and fro from controller to MnK is a bit tedious, need to go to settings for that.
Very fun game. Just hate how most cars are just American. It makes it boring.
The game is great for anyone wanting to learn more about cars. From transmissions to brakes and even complete engine rebuilds, this game is extremely rewarding combined with a leveling system and garage expansion milestones
Great game hope they do a Heavy Equipment and Farm equipment one again down the road !
its a great game, super fun and all, but the only problem is that the freeroam is limited and you cant really get the car dirty or break the car. if you make that possible this would be the best game ever.
I thought this was going to be a chill game about fixing cars.
Turns out, it’s actually a full-time job in disguise, especially when it comes to wheels.
First, you have to take off the wheels. Then you have to separate the tire from the rim. Then you need to buy new tires and new rims. THEN you have to put them back together, balance them, and finally put them back on the car.
Doing it once? Kinda satisfying.
Doing it for 50 cars? Not 50 wheels — 50 full cars?
It becomes a test of patience, sanity, and your will to live.
If you love cars and enjoy mild to severe frustration, this game is a perfect fit.
10/10. Would spin tires and lose hours again.
It's pretty hard to tell which of the Simulator titled games are really actually a good game or just trying to mooch off of the "Simulator" titles. But Car Mechanic Simulator is awesome. With all the things you can do and repair, they really have a rock solid foundation for how you can tear the cars down, repair parts, get your shopping list in order to make ordering parts way easier, etc.
This type of concept for a game could completely fall apart with the wrong design choices, but they do a great job of keeping all of the mechanics of the game (no pun intended) tied together cohesively. And the fact that you have randomized jobs is perfect for a game like this. It's just pure fun to play, and so the fact that the game keeps feeding you things to do is a huge bonus.
Here's an example of how flexible the gameplay is. I didn't realize traveling to some of the other places in the game (Junkyard for example) costs money. I was just exploring the places to see what you could do, and I ran out of money. I couldn't finish my current jobs because I couldn't afford to buy the replacement parts. So what did I do? I yanked the doors, hood, and trunk off the dude's car and sold them. Parked the car outside and used the money to accept other jobs I Could complete. Once I racked up plenty of money, I went back to his car, bought the missing items back and had plenty of money buy the replacement parts to finish the job and continue on my merry way.
To me, that's what a real Simulator title is about. Not being tied to a linear experience for everyone who plays it, but you can actually have your own unique experiences with the game.
Definitely recommended!
There's something about completely dismantling and reassembling something that is just really cathartic for me, and if I'm honest, this game really satisfies that itch that I didn't know I had.
Graphically speaking, it is a really solid game-- the cars all look really good, and it has a decent array of both modern and classic cars for all interests, my own being more leaning towards the muscle cars of the late 60's and early 70's.
It is also quite intricate in the parts you dismantle from the cars, albeit simplifying it down for an easier to understand model. I found myself really enjoying the complete strip-down and reconstruction of the cars I'd picked up from the various locations you could get them from, and while I never played the earlier versions of Car Mechanic Simulator, I did feel like it was a sort of definitive edition of the game. Though not without its faults.
As you can imagine there's a lot you can do with the game-- get an essential skeleton of a car from the junkyard and build up your own car, from tuning it up with high performance parts, repairing components and upgrading them to give them some extra power, or even just do up the cars so that you can sell them on for some major profit. These are all parts of the game I fully engaged in and found myself getting sucked in deeper and deeper, until I was 100+ hours into the game!
You do have some 'story' missions, where customers bring their cars in for various repairs, etc., and whilst these were fine for the most part, the further into them you went, the more I'd encounter instances where I would misstep in replacing components, since the game is VERY particular about where you put them when only certain things need replacing, and the other components around them happen to be below the replacement part percentage. The biggest pains were the Piston Rings, which I replaced one in the wrong exact location no end of times, and had to completely dismantle the whole engine to get back to it.
It did start to get a little long, though not unwelcome whilst aiming for the 100% achievements, as there is no indicator for how many times you've run the path test, or how many cars you've sold or bought from various locations, just to name a couple examples, but it was only when I was just a few away when I started to feel a little fatigued from the repetitive motions, perhaps brought on by my infectious need to perfectly reconstruct the car.
Another unfortunate thing with the game is that whilst you can keep your own cars in storage, there isn't really too much need to, other than a desire to own them. There aren't really any particular tasks that you need to perform outside of an individual race track loop to get a particular time, and some of the DLC, such as thew Drag Racing DLC, didn't really pull me in as much as the mechanical side of the game did. But, it was nice having my own car parked up outside the garage.
There is a lot of variety in what you can do with the cars here, and I feel like I could have picked this up at an earlier time and happily played through it for just as long as I have done, but I think a little over two weeks non-stop play has really brought that itch under control, finally.
To finish off, it's a great game, and really cathartic if you're into, or can get into, the repetitive motions of the game, with a slight caveat regarding the later story missions that may have you redoing all your work if you aren't paying attention. Well worth picking up though, for sure.
This game is way more relaxing than you'd expect. Sort of like putting together a puzzle. There's something really satisfying about taking a rusted out junker and slowly bringing it back to life. It’s not super realistic by any means, but that kind of works in its favor.
It’s a great game to just chill, zone out, and maybe throw on a podcast or some music in the background. There's a large collection of mods on the Workshop that let you add new cars, configs, and more to expand and customize the experience. Easy to sink some hours in with this one.
Really cool game, but I'm sad that almost every workshop mod requires some of the game's DLCs to install, and in my opinion, the DLCs aren't that cheap for what you get.
Extremely fun game. No real life application though. I got overly confident from my 100 hours of playing and decided i was going to take my cars engine apart and put it back together. I have been riding a bike for the last 8 months while my car sits in pieces in my garage
You just press and hold a button down to do...literally everything. One button. The same button in fact, for every single task. There are no "mini-game" type elements, no "stop the bouncing bar in side the green zone", no degrees of success or failure, it's just... hold down the button. Now move your cursor to a different spot on the screen and hold down the same button. Do that 100 times. You "win".
I couldn't even control what order I tightened the lug nuts on a wheel in (it SHOULD be a star pattern, but instead, it just tightened them in a circle, while I held down a button...I didn't even have to let go and hold it down again for each bolt, I just...held it down for the entire wheel.)
What a heaping pile of garbage. How is this game so highly rated?!?!
Refunded after 20 minutes of THE MOST BORING GAMEPLAY I HAVE EVER ENDURED.
I enjoy playing this game but i wish there were more to the dlc's. I kinda want a diesel dlc so that we could use a cummins, powerstroke, or a duramax maybe even a tdi in a bmw or vw. But otherwise the dlc's are a great way to keep this game instresing

This game is basically a virtual, car-sized Lego set, plus the complexities of an automobile. Story mode gameplay is fairly straightforward, nothing too ambiguous other than fixing customers' cars and when you get more money, buy junkyard cars, rebuild them, and sell for substantial profit.
If grinding isn't your cup of tea, the sandbox mode is just as fun, minus the progression challenges. You can faff around with the cars and build them to be as ridiculous as you want, pumping eye-watering power figures or making a ricer out of the car such that your neighbour would want to push it off a cliff. Or make them as boring as you like. Who am I to tell you how to build a car? As long as it has four wheels, an engine and a gearbox, and off you go.
Really addicting for no reason, you cannot become bored because repairing cars that require hours of work and then seeing the results, its just brings peace upon your soul. Really good game with attention to details and graphics, a piece of art for those who like cars.
It's a chill game, you can just turn off your brain and assemble cars or do what you want. It's one of those games you play when you just want to clear your mind while listening to chill music.
But of course it's not a replacement for learning real automotive assembly since the parts are all the same and they all go on the same place which isn't the case for real cars. But hey it's a fun chill game.
you get to go on sandbox and make cars without stressing over not having money to fix the cars and i find this game relaxing
Lots of fun, oddly relaxing to take a junkyard wreck and bring it back to life. Playing will actually give you some basic knowledge of the inner workings of cars too. It’s still pretty simplified though, lots of parts that work across multiple makes, but I think it’s as detailed as could be practical for a mass appeal game. I love this game for listening to podcasts/youtube as well.
Enjoying it a lot. Can't stop. But it lacks many things like measurements, measuring tools, lubrication, head gasket, etc. and interior needs a LOT more detailing.
Still a must play for car guys and gives you basic idea of how a car is serviced.
Wasn't sure on this when I purchased but has grown to be a favorite time sink for waking up drinking coffee or just want to fiddle with a car you don't have in rl. Not a complete depth of realism as some things don't have their variable sizes and things missing like gaskets and such if you work on cars for real, but I've come to really like the game I would suggest buying on sale as I did or it can seem a bit expensive depending what dlcs you want for what they are. Also the game it will not guide you to fix any car it generalizes what you might need to do so it takes some patience if you don't have a minimal idea of some car work.
if this game had multiplayer and multiplayer races it would be the best. apart from that the rest of the game is fine but theres nothing to work towards once you have all the shop upgrades and everything. If multiplayer races were implemented then it would fill that void!
I cant speak for any non car enthusiasts, but for me, this game is such a gem. Restoring cars, and tracking them to get better lap times is very satisfying. Solving Problems, and even learning a couple things here and there. A must buy for any car lover.
games needs to be updated it's the same thing all the time I won't waste my time playing it. I will tell people not to get it.
Not a bad game to pass the time away. Love building the cars. Reminds me of when I could fix my older cars.
I love this game, love cars, so its nicey to build your own cars
As a person who works on my own cars, have to love the detail and realism of the working on cars. Only a few things missing including the different variations of brake parts. Pads, rotors, and calipers should be various sizes based on style (Car/SUV/TRUCK). But I am overall impressed with the game.
Needs damaged model in the game and options for chose bigger service or 3d another home..
this is a good game but if you play for like 6 days it gets little boring
yes, it is a very fun game to sit down and relax and work on cars of many types there are so may opertunities to do in this game
i wish there was a way u could adjust the psi when u install a turbo engine in a car. I have a high hp mustang but can't seem to get it to hook. Even with the the widest tire i could get for the game. But other then that i love this game. I wonder what the new CMS will have ?
pretty good. realistic in certain ways, unrealistic in others. however for a good basic car mech sim this aint bad at all. A++
I liked this game. I think it is really good. When you have to balance the tires you get to have a little mini game.
At the time of this review, I have 64 hours in and I love the game. I have worked on plenty of real-life cars and its close enough for me along with being turned into a game that it scratches the itch I get to work on cars now and again without have the space or funds at this time to do so.
if you like building dream cars this is the place for u everything is super straight forward not everything is exactly correct some things are a little unreal overall fun game
MY RATING 10/10....!
I absolutely love this game! Before playing, I knew almost nothing about vehicles, but this game has taught me so much in a fun and engaging way. The game-play is super smooth, and everything works perfectly without any issues. I would easily give this a 10/10. I highly recommend anyone to buy this game without hesitation — you won't regret it! Huge thanks to the developers for creating such a masterpiece. 🙌
nice and realistic gameplay with some awesome simulation.
Yeah. Sometimes you just want to jump back in and build up a car. I keep waiting for the next game to come out.
Good game easy to mod via workshop plus multiple real life cars :)
I love this game and most everything about it. Do not be misled or put off by the fact that this is Car Mechanic 2021. Its content and playability are, relatively speaking of course, virtually timeless in its application and the enjoyment to be derived from this wonderful game.
There is plenty to do from the very start and it's not at all difficult to get used to the various techniques for moving around, analysing and then disconnecting and reconnecting old and new replacement parts respectively. The basic mechanics of the game are then supplemented and greatly enhanced by the different means of improving and expanding your business enterprise.
Once you achieve a certain level of income from your business, you can even go out and visit barns, scrapyards or auctions and purchase dusty old cars with parts missing, bring them back to your garage and then rebuild them totally from scratch and sell them at a significant profit. There are so many facets to this gem of a game and each one simply adds more and more value and enjoyment to the point of seemingly endless hours of fun in the workshop.
It's also very interesting to learn something of what goes on under the hood/bonnet of these miracles of mechanical and electrical engineering. I am not into the specialisations of each class, engine power and brand of vehicle and so the vast majority of criticisms which seem to originate from the devotees and purists of the industry impinge upon neither my enjoyment nor my appreciation of the outstanding value of this product.
I can certainly say, as a layman, that the amount of effort, expertise and time which has clearly gone into detailing the multitude of mechanical parts, their working relationships and the way in which they all come together to form the fully functioning machine as a whole is simply awe inspiring. in this respect, I firmly believe that the developers are not given anywhere like the credit they deserve for all of the effort and expertise this game continually demonstrates.
I also really enjoy unravelling the various mysteries concerning which parts are actually malfunctioning or simply worn out. The learning curve is both really well thought out and indeed well laid out too and the various tools you are very quickly able to acquire and use in helping you speed up analysis of the various issues adds immeasurably to one's overall enjoyment.
I have had no performance issues playing with every setting at maximum, other than needing to limit in the Options the FPS to 60 to avoid my GPU overtaxing itself. Doing so made no difference whatsoever to the speed or quality of onscreen graphic presentation and game play, it simply stopped my GPU and, in particular, its cooling fans from racing.
Anyway, for all of the above reasons I absolutely love this game and shall continue to add the outstanding DLCs until my Steam Library collection is complete.
Based on my own experience (100 hours to date and counting...) I wholeheartedly recommend this to anyone with even the slightest interest in cars and how they work and an appetite for unravelling a never frustratingly oblique or unsolvable mystery. Playing this game always proves to be a casual, totally relaxing experience. I feel sure you will not be disappointed.
This game helps me learn where all the parts are in different types of engines, and it’s super fun
2018 was better, but this really is just a copy and paste
also 2018 has mods...
This game won't teach you how to be a Master Mechanic but it definitely helps with a lot of the fundamentals. I came into this hoping I could enjoy learning about cars and their engines and that's exactly what happened. I use QoL mods like automatic screwing just to cut down on some of the more tedious stuff. I've achieved the ability to go to the auction, win an auction, fix the car up and replace the broken stuff, and sell it or a fat profit. This is essentially the core game play loop. You acquire a car, whether it's a pos or a brand new ride, put money into it by replacing or upgrading components, and then sell it. There are junkyards, barns, auctions, showrooms, and dealerships. I am able to comfortably identify the components in my own real life car now and that alone is such a valuable thing to have learned from this simple game. I play this game for a good hour each chance I can, and it's usually enough time to almost fully rebuild a single car. Then, I take a break and go play something else. That's how you can best enjoy what this game has to offer.
screw,screw,screw,remove,buy,replace - peak gameplay
good game but never saves your fucking progress Fuck you reddot
Great game. All kinds of familiar cars with alternative names. It makes car mechanics look easy because of automatic parts removal and assembling. For a novice level of knowledge its challenging and fun. Making enough money to renovate your junk yard car purchase is kind of difficult. I like it.
Really interactive and also a decent learning tool for basic mechanic jobs. Fun and gives you a taste of the automobile world.
