Going Under is a satirical dungeon crawler about exploring the cursed ruins of failed tech startups. As an unpaid intern in the dystopian city of Neo-Cascadia, you’ll wield office junk as weaponry as you make your way through the offbeat procedural dungeons beneath your company campus.
The Future is Wack
Failed businesses no longer just cease to exist--they sink beneath the earth, and their employees are cursed to wander the halls for eternity as monsters. It’s your duty to put these monsters out of their misery and repossess their assets--so that your boss can afford a new car, or something.
Not All Heroes Get Paychecks
Battle through the remains of failed startups themed off of gig workers, dating sites, and cryptocurrency. Uncover the true motives of your employer, a carbonated drink startup known as Fizzle, and their parent company, a subscription box manufacturer with an army of helpful shipping drones. Make friends with your co-workers! Hire a freelance goblin! Date a slime! Invest in crypto! Set a rideshare on fire!
Fight Flexibly
In the dungeons of Going Under, almost everything can be used as a weapon, from laptops to brooms to body pillows. Proper weapons can be found as well, but even they can break at a moment’s notice if you aren’t careful. Playing cautiously and picking the right weapon for the situation are musts if you intend on surviving your internship.
Horrible Bosses
And you thought your boss was a monster. At the bottom of the dungeons lurk the founders of the cursed startups, getting rich off of investments while their employees fight amongst themselves. Defeat them and return to the surface with their enchanted relics to empower the company you work for.
Get Paid in Experience
As you explore, you’ll encounter powerful Skills that change the way you play. Learn them at the Cafe and they’ll show up in future runs. Use a Skill often enough, and you’ll get it “endorsed” and available to start your expeditions with. Combine multiple Skills for crazy synergies, and you’ll be cleaning house in no time.
A World of Characters
Complete Tasks for your co-workers to gain Clout with them and unlock their unique bonuses. Learn more about Neo-Cascadia, the origins of Fizzle, and how the drone shipping empire known as Cubicle came to dominate the city. Can you save your company and yourself from going under for good?

literally such a fun game, so many different ways to play this game in the way that you want. spent a while finding the gameplay style that i like, and now that i've fully figured out how i like to play the game i'm having so much fun. i'm not the biggest gamer out there but this is an awesome game. i think i'll buy the full game soon, love it that much.
After working with multiple start-ups and a few years of tech consulting I don't think I can do this.
Played for 1.5 hours, ran into enough bugs and issues with dropped inputs on controller to make me stop playing.
Took a curse whenever I could, they would NEVER wear off, despite saying they only lasted X combats. First person curse broke the camera when focusing, literally just exited the game to write this review.
On top of those things, the repetitive nature of the game wears off quickly.
Big focus on using surrounding weapons, which is kinda fun. Large weapons just aren't conducive to the pace of the game considering how small rooms are and how quick some enemies can move/attack. Which is a shame, because it feels like over half the items you end up with in a room are large items.
Least favorite part of the weapon system is that because they have durability, if you happen to attack a weapon on the ground, you lose durability on both your own and that weapon. Not only that, but there is a skill that keeps a rotating saw around you for automated damage, but guess what: it also damages weapons you walk into, or even just drop. If weapons were non-interactable until being used, would solve this problem greatly.
Enemies have decent variety, can be annoying dealing with some them when you have a camera that isn't in a fixed position and the tells can be fairly short.
I guess the game was designed around the grind and leveling up skills/mentorship to make the game easier, but if you're playing optimally, it feels more like you're fighting the game design itself than the enemies.
For $5, this game is absolutely worth it.
Moment-to-moment gameplay and artwork is serviceable enough, but the real joy here is in the dialogues with your coworkers between runs (think Hades) and with the shopkeepers in each dungeon.
The first half of the game strikes a much better balance between gameplay and new story than the second; I have no intention of finishing this title.
Once you hit the "Midway" point (you'll know it when you see it) the game asks you to re-do all three main dungeons, but this time, it's harder! There are a few new enemy types and the bosses are slightly remixed, but the rooms themselves don't change and it ultimately feels like a pointless exercise in padding. Dialogue slows down significantly--the shopkeepers don't have anything new to say and unless you're a gamer god, you've exhausted their stories long before this.
fun gud tim
This is a cutesy, low-budget, rogue-like dungeon crawler.
PROS:
- Background music
- Humor in the writing
CONS:
- Too much grind without enough variety. I didn't even want to finish the game after being told to "do it all over , but this time enemies have more health"
It is a sweet rougelike experience. I was pleasantly surprised by the content and the vibes are just right. The story is fun and the colorful art style is pleasing. I was looking for a somewhat forgiving-cute experience and with the assist options they have I had a lot of fun with it. The base difficulty was not for me as it can get quite hard. I definitely see myself picking up this game later when I get bored.
Keep in mind that this is a procedurally generated dungeon crawler which has 4 main themed dungeons, each having a modified, more difficult version which slightly changes the theme as well, along with 2 story specific dungeons. It also has a challenge mode now. With the assist modes I was able to clear it in about 10 hours, but I am sure it takes longer to finish without it.
Love this game! The characters are really creative and hilarious! Swomp is my favorite with his random insightfulness that no one expects. I loved getting to know each of these characters and possibly even relating to them in some ways. I also really enjoyed the skills you could choose from. I will forever have a memory of me as a Baby with three hats on while beating Hover Hands and that brings me joy. :)
Excuse me, Swomp is WHAT?!?!?!?!?!?!!?
Very fun and pretty short game. It can get a bit difficult at the very beginning but once you get used to controls and unlock skills and mentor perks it gets doable.
Really inventive rogue-lite!
STYXCOIN TO THE MOON BABYYYYYYY!
Fun lil game but way to expensive for what it is. Wait for a sale
A new and colourful spin on the dungeon crawler roguelike genre.
At first I thought "is that all?" when I found there were only three dungeons total, but there is a lot to do in this game with the additional difficulties. Bonus points also for it letting you pick your outfit.
A truly hidden gem in the roguelite genre. This game released near Hades I and I think that's why it was in the shadow for this long. I really loved it. I did my first playthrough with the assist mode, which helps a lot when you're clumsy or beginning at the game. Now I'm at my second playthrough, I'm playing without assist and I'm loving the difficulty curve! The story is really well put, Jackie lovely (and YOU CAN PET THE DOG) and the cynism and jokes on capitalism are just the cherry on the top of an amazing game.
You should really play this ♥
Absolutely a hidden gem. The core loop is surprisingly deep, while being fairly intuitive. The art direction is cool and very self aware. The music is the cherry on the cake. Props to the team!
10/10 under every aspect.
Cute, underrated roguelite. Loved the story!
Do you enjoy torturing yourself by playing difficult games and telling yourself that you're having fun? Well, this one is for you!
I love the setting, the startup tech company jargon humor, and the unique gameplay. Anything that isn't nailed down can be used as a weapon. The only downside is the difficulty— even the developers stated that this game was meant to be challenging. As an older gamer, I can't handle games that are too difficult, so I turned on assist mode, and even then, this game is still giving me a hard time!
I really like the idea, i really do. but i just cant like this game. for a couple of reasons
#1: It is way too hard, like WAY too hard. Even with the assist mode options all enabled its still SOOO g o d d a m difficult especially in the late game.
#2: it is short. about 10 hrs MAX of this game. i get its their first game but yeah its pretty short
Despite the issues i had it was still was an ok game and i had a little bit of fun piecing the story together. overall i give this game like a 6-7/10 and i would probably only buy this if it were one sale (like it is rn)
I love this game sm.
This was a solid action roguelike that was carried by its creativity, dare I say FLAVOR, world-building, characters, and unapologetic satire mixed into its story and content. The story and flavor touches on...idk...corporate greed, worklife balance, cryptocurrency, corporate culture, dating apps, AI? and many other things that we encounter in real life, especially in the workplace. If you've worked in a corporate or tech environment or have been a no-paid or low-paid intern...this game is HIGHLY relatable. I work in the corporate world and wow...they hit it on the head with some of the characters and content.
If you like Hades and other action roguelikes, this is worth a try. Like most action roguelikes, you get to a point where some parts become tedious as you try over and over to beat the next boss, etc etc. However, the end of the story was ridiculous and worth it.
G
This colorful dungeon crawler is kinda cool just wish there was something else to the game, and more intensives to do the dungeons. Overall I won't be playing it again most likely.
Great roguelite with a charming story! I found the challenge mode a little unforgiving but that's sorta the point ain't it.
controller support is broken. i can't move because the left joystick either does nothing or opens the menu for some reason.
can't rebind em either, sucks to suck if you don't like the controls they give you!
fUN GAME!
Going Under is an okay game, which is a fair thing to say for a game that will last you around 10 hours if you're just aiming to finish it without maxing out mentorship or grabbing EVERY power up in the game.
The characters were cute and amusing.
The Dungeon crawling, although a bit short and strange difficulty spikes, was fun and quick enough for me to keep my attention and continue through without much trouble.
My only real complaints are:
1. The ending of the game wasn't all that rewarding and felt like a so-so ending. Not bad, but not great...
2. The dodge roll to me is weirdly too short to be too helpful. Sometimes I would dodge roll away from an enemy only to be still take a hit just because I was too close to where I was.
3. The response time was also weird, sometimes, the dodge roll wouldn't respond fast enough and I took a pointless hit that an enemy telegraphed several seconds ago.
4. The final boss is kinda bland. You just have survive several monster waves and fight the real boss, but if you get hit once, than the boss knocks you away and regenerates all the health it lost, forcing you to fight it again and try to get to the next phase of the fight.
This just felt like extra padding for time and a weak attempt at difficulty. I wish the fight was more unique. I'm just thankful there was some health items during the last fight, otherwise I definetley would've died.
Besides those gripes, the game was fun, and worth the purchase.
If I had to give a fair rank, I would put it at 6.8 / 10.
swomp beb u are literally so perfect i would die for u
A silly, relatable game about internships, startups, bad business, and workplace practices. The dialogues, characters, and humor are great and, sadly, still up-to-date. The gameplay is solid and fun, the art direction is brilliant, and the soundtrack is amazing.
It is lovely, I enjoyed it a lot and recommend it.
cute. fizzle. i'm a skill issue and had a lot of fun.
Good characters, fun gameplay and a banging soundtrack? The fuck? 10/10
Fantastic game! Loved the writing, the gameplay is pretty good, over all 10/10
Accurate representation of an internship.
Great developer, great game. (seriously, go check out their other game: Another Crab's Treasure)
This is not very good...
its Rogue-lite...nt
its irreverent...nt
its woke...nt
BUT
Another Crab's Treasure...
is veeeery gooood...
so...
thumbs up :)
I've worked in startups before and the writing, humor, and satire here is really charming and at times, kind of insightfully poignant. Its also chock full of tech world easter eggs and I think people working in that industry will appreciate the inside jokes.
The gameplay is pretty stimulating, forcing you to equip and re-equip items on the fly and switch between weapons in different combat scenarios. Weapons break easily but practically everything in the office environment can be used as a weapon and it can be kind of fun just going around wrecking everything
When it comes to criticism I'd say that the gameplay can be a little shallow. The game experience itself is over pretty fast and I found myself using the same weapons and strategies after a while. Towards the end I started getting to a point where I would no longer get flavor text between runs. I also wouldn't mind seeing these characters interact with each other in a daily standup every so often. The writing is the best part of this game so I wish there was just more of it
One last thing I will say is that for some reason, I can't shake a certain melancholic feeling at certain scenes. This game ended up being pretty prophetic in terms of how technology would negatively affect our lives in the future. I don't see this as a downside of the game itself, but maybe just some food for thought on how the obsession with new technology isn't always a positive and a reminder for us to foster connection with real humans rather than robots, AI, and apps
I can see where Another Crab's Treasure took his influence here (to prove my point: some sounds effects are the same in the two games!). I pretty appreciate the game, and liked that you have to use new weapons during dungeons to go further (cause they break).
I was surprised however to complete the game in less than 6 hours (tried Impostor Mode at he end, but I liked more the roguelike main story version). Dungeons were strangely more difficult than the bosses themselves, but I see that this kind of game can actually motivate new players to play roguelikes. I would have just loved to play a Hard mode or something...
Like some said, a lot of runs will work or not depending on luck, and the runs I've lost are because the focus camera sometimes quitted on me...
But at the end, a very funny game with good humor, good basics, and a fun gameplay!
Incredibly polished game with relatables jokes. It is brilliant I recommend playing it.
It's real in the ;_; way.
Such an awesome game with great dialog, humour, unique art style and a BANGER soundtrack.
I started off wishing there was more (there was yay) but by the final level, the game play and boss fights started to slightly overstay its welcome.
Just play through it at your own pace and don't worry about completing challenges - you'll have plenty of time to.
A common criticism I see against this game is that there isn't enough variety between runs, but I don't agree at all because the combat is solid enough (when you get the hang of it) that it's more about how you play the game rather than the game handing you builds directly.
A few examples of this:
- You can "endorse" skills by using them so you can start runs with them, which gives you choice about what build you're aiming towards that run and also really helps with doing mentor challenges.
- I once took Ray as a mentor, got myself into massive debt which manifests as a ball and chain around my leg, and then proceeded to use elemental immunity and setting the ball on fire + a storm cloud to stunlock the boss as I beat him to death with my debt (debt is meant to be a huge debuff, and I used it as a weapon by picking it up and hurling it).
- Stacking unarmed buffs makes it have hilarious DPS if you have the skill to dodge due to its lack of stunning.
- Huge weapon + huge arms + "upcycle" buffs to weapon size and durability + Old Flame = room clearing majesty.
Also the game just isn't super long so it's not trying to give you 500 hours of content. I haven't beaten it yet but I will probably beat it within 20-30 hours.
The fact that a lot of the jokes in this game are actually happening in current workplaces as of 2024 is scary. I think these jokes were a lot funnier in 2020 before they became less satire and more just saying what is currently happening in workplace culture. AI taking over? Yep. Encouraging and discouraging mental health? All the time.
If you're sick of working (or looking for jobs) in the tech sector or in modern day corporate America, this game is less likely to make you laugh about it and more likely to get sadder.
The game itself is perfectly fine though. It feels good to hit things with the items around the office. It's short, but sweet.
Awesome with fun and often times sharp humour and writing
A fun little rogue like with bright colors and cozy difficulty. Whack demons with pencils and staplers. Navigate office politics by beating them up. Likable characters and storylines, decent action and short.
Zajebiste...
This game gave me startup PTSD
it's hype
Went Under
Really cute game with a great corporate-Memphis inspired style. I enjoy the dungeons, and the soundtrack is great without being too much. Highly recommend this game if you liked Cult of the Lamb. As a marketer and graphic designer myself, the jokes are spot on.
A fun, light rogue-like, where you get to work as an unpaid intern. Per the norm, working for a Corp sucks hahaha. Very chill
+ 7/10
I loved the style, jokes, and commentary. Unfortunately, the gameplay doesn't live up to the rest of it. This would be a cult classic if the dungeon exploration controlled better and were more fun to play.
Going Under is charming, whitty, hectic, and a honest take on how corporations exploits workers and rob us all of our humanity. How competition does nothing but destroy other businesses who are also slaves to some mega corporation. The Soundtrack is chock-full of bangers and you will catch yourself bobbing your head ALOT!
Combat is a rougelike where everything in the area is a weapon! And it's so funny slapping someone with a body pillow and that somehow gets you a hot demon girlfriend! Ranged weapons are a bit weird but there is a decent variety that you'll have fun trying out everything.
And the perks are all fun and chaotic
