...fifty times larger than Elder Scrolls II: Daggerfall! Explore three million square miles of uncharted terrain from Roman Damascus to Three Kingdoms China in an exploration RPG that transports you onto the Ancient Silk Road of 200AD as an intrepid traveller or a ruthless conqueror.
From a parallel dimension where they still make keyboard-controlled, square-based RPGs in 2019 comes the new game from Chris Bateman (Discworld Noir, Ghost Master, Heretic Kingdoms). Can you puzzle out the secrets of the four distinct challenges await you in Silk?
- Explore the vast expanse of the Silk Road in an epic journey across dangerous wilderness as The Traveller.
- Overthrow Rome's greatest enemy, the powerful Parthian Empire, as The Rebel.
- Master the art of raiding to capture the fortunes of rival kingdoms as The Warlord.
- Carve out a trading empire between the brutal battlegrounds of the Silk Road as The Noble.
- Level up any seven of the thousands of Advisors in the game as you hire your perfect party, each of which unlocks hundreds of unique choices in the world
- Battle, Trade, or Explore: play the game your way as you amass a well-provisioned caravan or build your own renegade army
- Discover the lost genre of tile-based RPGs (Eye of the Beholder, The Bard’s Tale) remastered for the twenty first century

People seem to misunderstand what is the goal of this game. It is not a game about trading or warfare and conquest. It is a statement, it's meant to show the sheer scale of the Slik Road. It exists mainly to show you that the journey (remember the game happens at around Roman Empire times) is an incredible, hard to properly fathom distance. The game is not complex because it's more so a piece of art, a happening to be witnessed making you realise something you probably will never truly experience. Silk is great at what it's meant to be, perspective.
A profoundly disappointing experience. Although all the features in the game are well thought out and constructed, the world feels unforgivably dead and hollow. The events, terrain, encounters, characters (or lack thereof), and cities feel identical and bland. There's a fun trading game here but with critical lack of flavor. The custom voice overs for major cities is a great first step but I need a lot more then that to keep me engaged.
What the game lacks is roleplay. I don't feel like a real person at the head of a caravan during the silk road, I feel like I'm skimming a grade school history text book as I'm playing Tetris. I mean, I really like Tetris, don't get me wrong, but only when I'm supposed to be working. During my free time I want something a little more fleshed out.
Exelent game, it is a pity that there are not many sounds and music; / but for fans of this type of games great, there is a challenge but also fun :D
I am a huge fan of both Lords of Midnight and King of Dragon Pass; sadly, beyond the LoM-style visual engine, this game falls way short of either. Very simplistic buy high, sell low gameplay loop, storms become the only challenge of note just a few gamedays into the game, all "council" positions are covered near instantly with literally no reason to omit any of them. All in all, plays like a primitive mobile game. If you want to scratch that LoM itch, better get Legions of Ashworld or the many LoM remakes.
Silk is a compelling adventure strategy experience - not a genre name you see very often, and what a shame. The importance of picking a sensible route can be paramount, the threat of storms, raiders, wild animals and dead ends feel real and intense, and the feeling you get when you realise you have hit a dead end and have to turn back is a marvellous frustration.
It also means the satisfaction you get when you bring a caravan of silk back home is magnificent. The smalls joys of exploring a world in which every step matters, finding special locations, taking hidden treasure and fighting each small battle are immense. The feeling when your advisors reach a high enough skill level to start to really make the most of your surroundings is superb. A great adventure strategy title, definitely worth your time.
Very nice game! Hope the developers will update and expand it though
+Huge open world for hours of exploring
+Simple mechanics of gameplay - easy to learn in minutes
+History notes makes journey immersive
+Handful of ways to beat the game
-No background/ambient music so it is pretty quiet
-Some pieces of map are empty
-No marching armies, caravans etc.
There are some - not game breaking - bugs in the game, and military part is a bit raw, but main aspect of the game, trading/traveling is just as it should be. Historical commentary gives it more immerse. You can really feel how much of a distance the real trek was, and what kind of hardships caravaneers had to deal with during this very long journey.
Definitely worth it.
