10/10 soundtrack is near perfect only complaint is i NEED MORE we need a 2nd game PLEASE THE OUTSIDERS GIVE US MORE
I was originally going to not recommend this, but I think it's a fine enough game on Normal difficulty. It's a bit easy, and still some of the combat encounters feel quite padded, but for the most part it's a fun rhythm shooter with some odd design choices.
On the harder difficulty, called Demon, I found it to be frustrating in aggregate due to a collection of strange and kind of lazy design choices, which were used to increase difficulty in a very arbitrary way. It combines buffing enemy strength, with spawning more enemies, and then making you restart the level every time you die. I found this to be incredibly frustrating, made more so by the fact that the underlying game wasn't actually particularly challenging at all, but if I made one mistake (which I did often because I don't have great rhythm) I got sent back to the start. I wasn't too fond of that.
Eventually about halfway through I turned the game down a peg to normal difficulty, called Goat, I found the game to be incredibly easy, which confirmed my suspicions about the higher difficulty being kind of arbitrary. But the game was a fun power trip in that mode, still brought me close to death a couple of times but I always prevailed.
Under all the slightly wacky choices on top of it all, the core gameplay is actually pretty solid, though I've no idea why you can only take 2 weapons into a level instead of just letting you collect and switch between them all, Doom style.
In any case, it's a fun enough shooter to pass the time, but the higher difficulties are kind of shoddy. The voice acting is good, the story is fun, and the music is good, if that's your style.
So, here's why I refunded the game;
To start off, I do recommend this game to metal heads, rhythm game enjoyer's, and doom style game enjoyer's. However, the reason I refunded the game is purely because I found a lot of aspects in the game that kinda ruined it for me. The music as a start is very good. However, a lot of missions use the same BPM making the main story feel very repetitive. Now you may just say, play the survival mode and even with the DLC you can play not only heavy metal songs, and the songs that are not all the same BPM. Here's is the second and third problems I had with the game. The high BPM songs that come without the DLC do NOT fit the style of game. even when hitting perfect timings it doesnt feel like the combat flows, and even with some weapons it just does not work at all at higher BPMS, meaning that even in survival you would have to still only play the lower BPM songs so have a combat system that flows with the game and feels right. Secondly, the DLC, the song choices are amazing, the all (other than the paramore song) play really nice and smooth and feel properly synced. BUT. you can only play them in survival, and you can only play ONE song at a time. You cant have a queue of songs in the DLC due to licencing. I understand this is out of their hands, but its kinda a deal breaker for someone like me and probably a fair amount of people. Lastly, getting modded songs in the game is suggested by the devs, and they even have a extensive tutorial on their website. BUT this is only doable by downloading external software and even then, you can only put modded songs into story missions and can only have them in if they have a stable BPM (meaning the BPM doesnt change) AND not to mention that the process of actually putting modded songs into the game takes A LONG TIME making it just not worth the 3 minuets you hear it in a mission. Additionally it hardly works if you do it "quickly" as the hit timings and BPM would just be completely wrong.
If you're looking for a stunning single player, doom style, heavy metal endorsing, rhythm based FPS game. This game is for you.
If you are looking for all of the above, but one with a lot of diversity, easy to add modded songs to play in survival, unrestricted song queues, this game is not for you.
Wow. This game rocks!! I love music games, but they almost always fail on a couple of core issues. Either the music sucks, or the gameplay sucks. This one flips the bird to the failures of the past. If anything, I am upset there isn't more story to play through. Sure, it wasn't really anything special, but now I'm a bit hooked, and all I got to chase after is a rogue-like arena shooter. There's something really special here, and if they can manage it, I can see a game like this getting pretty big. Think of this like Doom, but the more you kill to the music, the better you'll be at Rip-n-tearing. Also, that final boss song is stuck in my head, and I can't stop listening to it. A huge warning!! You need to use wired headphones or speakers for this type of game. The latency can be adjusted a bit, but I found some earbuds are too delayed and inconsistent to play this proper. Still, totally worth the money, and I hope it succeeds enough to get more content going forward. Not just music packs, I need MORE GAME.
A tedious, repetitive, and very basic "rhythm" shooter that is carried by a great soundtrack and not much else. The generic gameplay gets boring very fast.
Recommend for $5-10 max.
PROS:
-Excellent soundtrack (I don't listen to metal usually but I enjoyed this)
-Final boss fight was cool
-Game has an "always on beat" option to disable the very annoying rhythm requirement (this disables scoreboards)
NEUTRALS:
-Very short lifespan. Around 5-6 hours of playtime, but by the fourth level you've basically seen everything the game has to offer (except the cool final boss fight).
-Nothing happened in the "plot".
CONS:
-Rhythm mechanic is tedious, repetitive, and adds absolutely nothing to the game. To the contrary, it actually detracts a bit from the game.
-All the bosses (EXCEPT the final boss) were extremely generic and forgettable.
-It is very difficult to tell where many attacks (esp boss attacks) will actually land.
-There is extremely little content to the game itself, so it gets repetitive and boring quite fast. Very overpriced at $30.
-All of the levels are just bland deathmatch style rooms with generic textures everywhere.
-Torment levels (unlock upgrades) are generic. Even the arenas are reused multiple times.
Eight levels with a really neat game design. Little challenges and unlockables mean you are getting plenty of replayability. That being said if Im splitting hairs I would say probably get it on sale for even like $20 and youll definitely get your moneys worth.
Honestly as good as the game is, I am surprised I havent seen more press about it. I have only beat the first level so far but I am excited to play more. If for some reason my opinion changes drastically I will update this review.
Fantastic gameplay, killer OST, all around a killer rhythm FPS. The DLC songs are absolutely worth the purchase.
Only complaint is that we were promised an OST release that we still haven't gotten after over 2 years.
Metal: Hellsinger is pure adrenaline, passion, and chaos rolled into one supremely addicting and insanely fun experience.
The gameplay? Absolutely incredible. It’s smooth, intuitive, and gives you the freedom to mix your weapons and abilities into stylish hit streaks. Every weapon has its moment to shine, especially against certain enemy types, which makes choosing your loadout a key part of the strategy, and it feels so rewarding when you get it right. Syncing your attacks to the beat is beyond satisfying. Watching your hit streak climb higher and higher, knowing every move you make is perfectly in rhythm, is a rush like no other. And the feats that protect your hit streak from resetting? Chef’s kiss. They let you push for even higher scores and make the game even more addictive.
But let’s talk about the music because, honestly, it’s the lifeblood of this game. The soundtrack is dynamic, reacting to your performance in a way that feels exhilarating. When you hit that magical max combo of 16 and the vocals kick in? Oh man, it’s like the game shifts into overdrive. Suddenly, the energy skyrockets, and you’re not just playing, you’re living the music! I can’t count how many times I found myself laser-focused, doing everything in my power just to reach that peak and hear the lyrics blast through my headphones. It’s a reward so perfectly tied to your gameplay that it creates this loop of pure motivation and satisfaction. Honestly, there’s nothing like it in any other game I’ve played.
And then there’s Leviathan Mode: what an absolute gem of an addition. Turning the game into a roguelike where you start from scratch, clawing your way to power while unlocking abilities like dashing, is such a brilliant twist. It keeps the core gameplay fresh while challenging you to adapt to a completely new way of playing. But the cherry on top? The unique weapons exclusive to this mode. These are wild fusions of two existing weapons, creating entirely new tools of destruction that I never expected. Discovering these surprised me. they’re a testament to the creativity and love poured into Leviathan Mode. It’s a mode that keeps me coming back for more, and I can’t get enough.
Now let’s talk about what I REALLY love: the soundtrack. Oh. My. God! This music is everything. Every single track fits the missions perfectly, pulling you into the world of hellfire and chaos. It’s so good that I found myself headbanging while blasting through demons. Tracks like "This Devastation", "Dissolution", "Goodbye, My Morning Star", "Dream of the Beast", "Leviathan" and "Silent No More" are absolute masterpieces. These songs don’t just complement the gameplay, they complete it. These musics alone are enough to make me want to play this game over and over again. That said, the licensed tracks felt completely out of place. Honestly, they don’t belong in a game like this, and I avoided them entirely because they just didn’t vibe with the Metal: Hellsinger experience.
The story is a standout too. You play as Unknown, a devil who’s lost her voice, and you’re on a mission to take it back with the help of Paz, your companion who’s equal parts loyal and lovable. The narrative is haunting, open-ended, and perfectly suited for the game. Not hearing Unknown’s voice until the end (which is leviathan mode ending) was such a brilliant touch, it added weight to every moment of her journey.
And can we talk about the levels? Each one is so unique, showcasing a different part of hell, from icy landscapes to fiery infernos, every area feels distinct. The enemies are hellish and menacing, but a few (cough Elite Behemoths and Shield Demons cough) can get really annoying. Losing my hit streak because I got caught by the edge of their attacks was frustrating, but it didn’t take away from how much I enjoyed obliterating everything in sight.
Replayability is through the roof, not just because of Leviathan Mode, but because the music is so amazing I’d gladly play it again just to experience it all over.
If you love rhythm games or if you love metal, Metal: Hellsinger is a must-play. It’s a game that gets your blood pumping and your head banging—and I love every second of it.
Someone called Doom(2016) a playable metal album, well this is the real playable metal album. I suck at rythm games, so this is one of the hardest fps I've played, but otherwise the game would be a bit short. Especially at later levels you get 10+ waves on monster per "arena" which start getting repetetive. Overall yow will enjoy this if like metal and old-school shooters.
The game is fine but certainly not "Overwhelmingly Positive".
The engine choice (Unity) doesn't support the game's objective of being time accurate. Frame pacing is subpar. Otherwise the game loop is fun.
6/10
It's not for me. I get the appeal, but no matter how many rhythm FPS games I play, I just don't enjoy them. This game is well made and definitely isn't bad. I'm just so used to classic FPS games, whereas playing this feels like the game is taking away my autonomy and freedom. "No you can't shoot rn, have to wait.". Not a huge fan personally.satisfying gameplay, D2 receptors in my striatum got tha dopamine flowing
wish they would add more campaign missions
Doom x Rhythm Game. Great soundtrack, Alissa White absolutely killed it. It's a short game, and bosses are the weaker aspect of the game. BUT, it's still a banger. Would recommend.
New Year's Quick Review:
+ very good rhythm game
+ good style
+ OST IS BANGER
+ great flow
+ gameplay is simple but good
~ plot is just okay
~ graphics are not great + it's game on Unity, but Style compensate this
- just 1 boss for every level and sometimes boss fight is easier than regular arena
Overall: very good rhythm game, u just have to get used to the flow of the game and u will kill everyone while listening super OST. If u love metal and FPS - this is a must have game, at least u can try it :)
This game is really good yes, possibly the best rhythm based shooter on the market since there isn't many games like this but i have one major complaint, arenas drag on for wayyyyyyyyy too long and the bossfights are a serious letdown seeing how its basically the same thing at the end of every level, other than that though i can happily recommend this game to anyone that likes shooters, rhythm and/or metal.
ITS DOOM ETERNAL WITH A PULSE.
high pace, "beat your best score" style game. Sure the number of levels is low, the number of enemy types is low, and the number of weapons pales in comparison to most FPS games, but it makes no difference. its so much fun. It has a decent leaderboard system without many clear cheaters at the top spots. but honestly besting my own score is the most fun part.
I haven't had this much fun beating myself in a long time.
fantastic short experience with great soundtracks
Nice game , enjoyed it with unique game play and quite nice story
Great take on the classic doom shooter with great musical tracks for all. The campaign takes at most 3 hours to complete, but with the other challenges and the extra music/weapons in dlc it seems to have a good bit of replayability.
I absolutely love this game. If you want a game that is a combination of Doom and a rhythm game this is it. It's such a unique way of playing an FPS game. The rhythm works so well you can choose how fast the game is because it changes depending on how fast the beat is. A slow beat makes the enemies move slower and makes you reload and shoot slower. Choosing a faster beat makes everything go faster so you can choose the difficulty depending on the music you choose. The only small nitpick for me is that you can only pick 2 weapons in your loadout. I would like to have access to all the weapons in combat that would be more fun in my opinion.
Hype as fuck doom shooter combined with rhythm elements that ALSO make the songs better? Hell yeah!
Really good, tho sometimes it feels like the music BPM doesn't match the beat for your shots
I'm getting old and found the final boss to be a bit too much for me, even on easy mode. I no longer have the patience to play through an entire level to reach the boss, die three times, rinse and repeat. So I quit and watched the ending on YouTube.
This sounds like a negative review. It isn't. As a lifelong metalhead, I loved every minute of this game. The soundtrack is amazing, the rhythm game is perfect (at least if you're a metalhead, it seems some people struggle with it but I had no issues), and it was an absolute pleasure to play. Sometimes you just gotta realize that, as you get older, some games just aren't made for you anymore. I'm positive that I could have beat it, I just didn't want to keep at it, and that's okay. This game was exactly what I was hoping it'd be and I highly recommend it. It's a brilliant masterpiece and the devs should be proud.
The soundtrack and general gameplay is great but the bosses are the weakest element of the game. Repeats of the same thing with increasing amounts of frustration. The last boss is the largest difficulty spike I’ve ever seen in a game, I can breeze past the last level with my eyes closed but the boss is ridiculously difficult, even on the easiest difficulty. I can’t be bothered to keep repeating the last level to be able to have another go. You should be able to jump right back to the boss rather than have to go through the level again. It sours an otherwise good game.
Beautiful well thought-out fusion of 2 genres, I never knew I needed rhythm Doom in my life before seeing the trailers for this game back in 2022. I just wish DLC levels would be released.
TLDR: Good music and fun. You buy now.
I've never played a game like this: it's a boomer shooter meets a rhythm game. Fire weapons on beat with the music and gradually build a multiplier which increases points and damage the higher it goes. If too long a time passes without hitting a beat the multiplier drops. This setup leads to a very satisfying flow state of gameplay which feels especially good with instruments and finally vocals being added to the game's music tracks as the multiplier grows.
Outside of Guitar Hero and Rockband in the mid 2000s I've never been very into rhythm games. However, this game was a breath of fresh air in an increasingly bloated industry that places monetization and trends above creativity and fun much of the time. Combine that with a killer soundtrack featuring members of famous groups such as System of a Down, Lamb of God, and more and you've got a winner.
If there were any cons I'd say that the game isn't incredibly long for the $30 price tag, but the production value, particularly in the music, make it worth it to me. You're basically getting a game and an album all in one one. I also wouldn't mind more weapon variety, but the ones that exists were fun enough to use and passive abilities that can synergize with said weapons help keep them a little more fresh should the player choose to experiment.
Pretty cool game that combines Action Shooters like Doom with a Rhytm game.
Very fun gameplay and enjoable Story included.
Songs are peak too.
10/10
fun and chaotic rhythm shooter, not very long. often left searching for the last enemy tucked in a corner somewhere, slows the pacing way down. the songs at the beginning are better than the ones at the end.
This game has serious potential it's literally doom eternal with rhythm the only downside is that it's very short and it doesn't have much replay value i hope the devs will update the game in the near future and maybe add a really good dlc for more content other than that it's still very solid.
doom, but rhythm game
fun, but every level needs to be as long as the final one
This game is absolutely amazing. If you are a metalhead, please do yourself a favor and get this game as you won't regret it. The soundtrack is awesome and includes some of the best vocalists in the scene. Combat is great as well along with the movement.
If you are a metal head, buy the game. If you think you like metal, buy the game. If you think you are good at games, buy the game. If you are good at games, buy the game. If you are a metal head who's good at games.. This game was made for you by people like you. Unleash your true power!
Such a great experience. A doom-like rhythm shooter with good heavy metal music. Weapons feel great and levels are fun. Graphics are very nice. If you like rhythm based games and boomer shooters, this is the perfect combination for you.
The gameplay loop is fun af and has definitely got me hooked enough to play it until I unlock every achievement. I'm a little disappointed in the essential hits pack, but other than that its been super enjoyable.
Amazing music and addictive game play, if you like shooters, metal and have decent rhythm then you will enjoy it. If you don't have rhythm then there is a feature to make to were you are always "on beat" and you can play just to enjoy the music and aesthetic.
A love letter to DOOM and Metal music that will leave you headbanging in your sleep, don't let yourself get deprived of such experience.
What a surprise!!! This game was low profile on my radar, another shooter trying to emulate DOOM i thought and never have i been so wrong. Left me desiring the game was twice as long and bobing my head for hours after finishing. Even if Metal music is not your cup of tea, give it a try: IT HAS A DEMO
Nothing but praise to the team and artists who worked on this masterpiece.
Sweeden has been a long time front runner in the industry and its games like this that prove the talent isn't only amassed on the big studios and is in turn spread arround, cant wait for whats next of this local scene and looking for The Outsiders/FUNCOMs next game "DUNE: Awakening" even if no metal music is expected on the Arraquis dessert.
MUST PLAY
best fucking time ive had with a game in ages. holy shit. why arent there more rhythm fps-es.
Love the story. Love the characters. More importantly, the gameplay. If you like to feel an action hero syncing everything to music, this is the game.
It's one of a kind. Have fun!
Like the VR game, it's an extremely fun game to play that has some really great music that gets the blood pumping. The only time it's not fun is the very last boss fight. Somehow I managed to do it one time and now it's like impossible the times I've tried again, to the point I feel like I need an invincibility cheat to pass it again. Still, would recommend.
Metal: Hellsinger – part fast-paced first-person shooter, part rhythm game. A truly novel experience for any metalhead gamer! Much like Serious Sam/Doom, except the music takes an even bigger role.
Not too long of a game, as it only took me 12 hours to get 100 % achievements. The main story is pretty short, but there are also fun challenges that add a bit of gameplay, a harder difficulty setting once you beat the story, and a roguelike (Hades-style) game mode that you unlock after beating the game. So there's a good amount of content for those who want to keep up their brütal boppin' after finishing the main content. Also, the achievements are of pretty ideal difficulty and don't take an eternity to grind, which I appreciate.
The world, all enemies and the cut scenes look very beautiful. The only things that noticeably tanked the performance of my poor PC were some goo-spitting, flying enemies in the Leviathan-mode. The aesthetics feature some heavy (metal) fan service in form of skulls, bones, fire and a bit more skulls. Just what you'd expect from a metal fueled Hell. The story is pretty average, but with good voice acting. The original soundtrack features some wonderful singers like Serj Tankian, making it truly stand out from others.
The gameplay was quite fluent and snappy; perfect for seasoned FPS players who don't suffer from beat deafness. Having to stay on-beat with your shots, dashes and reloads adds an interesting twist to just having a sharp aim and quick reflexes. Might be my own fault, but I figured out how to do the very handy long jump just after beating the game, which sucks as I didn't get to really use it, and getting some of the secrets without it was... painful. Aside from this, the only problem I had gameplaywise was staying on beat. "Skill issue!" one might argue, but also, I'm not the only person who has pointed out how unintuitive it sometimes feels to try hitting only quarter notes while listening to the melodies, riffs and the drum beat – especially as metal typically features lots of syncopation. But, it is what it is.
All in all, Metal: Hellsinger is a very cool, short (or a bit longer, if you wish) experience that is an easy recommend for any metal fan.
9 / 10
Would i recommend it for metalheads? Absolutely. Yet my experience was getting constantly hindered by about 15 hard crashes throughout the story.
Pretty fun game, with some great music. A little short, but it's a high-score based rhythm game so it's got some replayability. Also when you beat the game, you get access to a rogue-like mode which is nice. My only real complaint would be that the levels for the story-mode lack real identity and can feel very same-y, and I would've liked original bosses for each level instead of re-using the same boss with the same music, but that's a personal gripe and they were still fun.
The bridge was missing on the first map, thought i was just flying over a gap... 10/10
I don't even like rythm-based games, but because of the gameplay and especially the soundtrack, I wanted to give it a try.
And oh man, I am glad I did.
Gunplay and movement feels very satisfying, fun weapons (although not that much, only 6... 8 with DLC).
The game also doesn't punish you that much for not hitting the beat right, doesn't make you feel you HAVE to hit the beat perfectly.
And the music is just sooo good, it basically drives you to hit the beat right, for the vocals to kick in, just awesome.
It is a short game though.
One playthrough of just the main story will probably take around 4-5 Hrs.. 6-7 if you do some of the side stuff and it took me 8 hrs to get 100% Achievments. So 30€ might keep some people away, in regards of the games length. I still think it is worth that regardless.
There is also a Hordemode with rogue-like elements to delve into.
Overall a very good expierence for every metal, fps and rythm-game fan out there, 9/10!
I bought the base of the game to start, I heard really positive reviews for this game. I played for an hour and proceeded to buy all of the DLC. I super enjoy this game and recommend it to any of my metal heads out there!
God i wanna like this game so bad...
But half of the maps just dont spawn, i CAN'T SEE!
Carried by the music and announcer.
Less than 2 hours into the game, Amazing so far and super addictive.
Go for it, props to everyone involved in this project, nothing but a masterpiece of art itself. Good music, sick visuals, and a lot of Creativity! Great Game 10/10.
I played the demo a while ago… and man… this game is AWSOME! It’s like doom BUT YOU GOTTA SHOOT TO THE RYTHUM!!! I would 100% recommend this hidden gem
