Fun cute and relaxing puzzle game :)
10/10 I want more
Puzzle delicioso. O jogo estilo Sokoban definitivo
The humor is honestly pretty lame and feels almost forcefully quirky, but the gameplay and sense of progress are absolutely fantastic, and the devs really push a simple concept beyond its perceived limits. Really, really great game. Still need to 100% it, but the post game is tough. I love it.
Everything we do, we do for the snowmans
I'm a sucker for a good puzzle game that explains the mechanics through the puzzles themselves. This is one of those games. Some puzzles I ended up brute forcing and then had to work backwards to figure out why a solution worked. Sometimes, this is when it was trying to teach me a new quirk of the mechanics I never considered, or it was a case where I was just overthinking. Generally, though, I was able to use my expanding understanding to solve things intuitively. And the game generally does a great job telegraphing the intended goal of each island, which helped a lot.
I also like when a puzzle game isn't level-based or when it feels like a cohesive game space, which this does by the nature of it being open world. I never felt too frustrated with the puzzles because of how calm and relaxing the vibes were. The way this game strings you along island to island was really well done and got me interested in uncovering more and more of the map. This is one of those games that sucked me in, playing every day until I rolled credits.
The biggest downside for me was the underlying story and theming, which, although cute, were mostly uninteresting.
It's a good game.
Very good, It has great ambiance with the interactive music thing and the visuals ar every epic very cool. I like hugging snowmen and human storage rack. There should be more popcorn stands.
Extremely relaxing, and surprisingly never boring. The puzzles slowly get increasingly more complex but are perfectly manageable, new mechanics are discovered - it rather strangely reminds me of a metroidvania, without the stress and pressure.
Best of all, it's unexpectedly very funny.
Good silly puzzle game, I like.
You WOOD have to be ilLOGical not to emBARK on this expedition
It's beautiful, it's polished, it's a solid puzzle game. What more can you ask for?
One of my favorite puzzle games of all time.
Play this if you love rules discovery and little secrets
Great puzzler and audio track is very calming/relaxing. Enjoy playing at any time.
I think this is one of the best Sokoban games out there and appropriate for all skill levels. I think I am generally okay at solving Sokoban puzzles, but can often find myself getting frustrated or stuck at later levels. This one so far has been just the right level of difficulty where if I get stuck I just put the game down and come back later and am able to solve it. The presentation and movement is also very pleasant. Structuring the puzzles like a little adventure is pretty genius. I haven't quite completed it yet, but I feel like I am nearing the end. Very cozy before bed puzzling.
This game is dangerously addictive for puzzle fans. The open-world design makes it so easy to do "just one more island", and then suddenly another hour has passed. The designers have also managed to serve up quality AND quantity in terms of puzzle design, which provides a supportive learning curve, and allows for casual sessions.
The main reward here is the self-satisfaction of completing the many clever puzzles that the game has to offer. There's no story, or character dialogue. However, the strange museum placards do provide some surprisingly funny musings. Good humour is very rarely found in video games, so I was pleasantly surprised that this game had some genuine chuckles to offer.
I got the game on sale, and it took me about 13 hours to reach the credits, so I definitely got my money's worth. I did activate the hints feature early on, so that made the game easier. And even though I've reached the credits, there's still so much more that the game has to offer. I could spend several more days trying to uncover everything. I may dip back in occasionally, to seek out the last exhibits, but I don't think I quite have the dedication to uncover everything, and I'm okay with that. I've had so much enjoyment from it already.
Excellent writing. Mix of difficult and easy puzzles.
The simple mechanics repeatedly surprised and delighted me in their applications. Many gratifying "Aha!" moments.
You solve 1 island's mini-puzzle (sokoban) in order to unlock the next island with a new mini-puzzle, and this unlocks a new island. After you solve about 100 of these puzzles, you are rewarded with another set of a 100, and after you solve those... well nothing happens, you just finished the game and the credits roll. Watch the trailer... there's nothing else to this game, really!
Don't buy this game if you want a game; buy it only if you love doing puzzles as a stand alone activity (with a very pleasant UserInterface/graphics)
However, the puzzles are well done and become more challenging as you go.
You just solve puzzle after puzzle (all very similar) until eventually they say you have finished. Usually in games, you grind in order to level up or get a special item or something that gives you progress... not in this game, tedious brain teasers all the way through with an abrupt unsatisfying end.
some are tricky but its okay to use them hints - don't make your brain hurt trying to solve it
I loved this game until the last 4 puzzles. then my head hurt and i got mad and eventually looked up hints. skill issue. lovely museum would read plaques again
Nice
hard
A series of small Sokoban puzzles. Limited options make the puzzles simple, unchallenging and repetitive. Only recommended if you like a casual puzzle experience and the feel of a chill adventure.
I played A Good Snowman Is Hard To Build and completed the complex puzzles at the end. I read that A Monster's Expedition has the same twist which is a very hard challenge. While this is nice, I don't want to go through hours of not having fun to get to the fun part. Also I really don't like the humor describing human stuff with a wrong monster interpretation.
This game just didn't get me.
Instead I recommend
Pipe Push Paradise
A Good Snowman Is Hard To Build and
Stephen's Sausage Roll
Pretty cool geam
Loved it
You are able to make your own puzzles, like softlocking the player on purpose. I love this game.
The Game Design of this game is amazing, Legit by playing the game, you expect a puzzle to do something then all of the sudden, you push a log and get sent to the Shadow Realm. Learning a new game mechanic in this game is the reward of puzzles, which I love.
Makes my monkey brain light up.
AME is one of the few sokoban-type puzzle games I’ve played and actually enjoyed. It’s certainly one of the coziest and most pleasant games I’ve played, period. Lovely music and sound, and the visual style is pleasing to the eyes. There’s a good flow of introductory levels leading into increasingly challenging setups. I appreciate the hint system telling you what an island’s solution should be, without giving you any instructions.
I was very surprised to see a negative review saying all this game had going on was just logs, rafts, and longer logs. On a surface level, sure. But there is a surprising amount of nuance and depth as to how you can interact with the logs and how logs interact with each other. Levels are designed and ordered such that rules are slowly revealed to you. It had me saying “wait, that was possible the whole time?” and I love that feeling. The rules all build on each other in a logical and natural way.
As far as the game structure goes, it’s not very often you play a puzzle game with levels laid out in a large, interconnected world where you can walk from one point all the way to any other point. I feel conflicted about it—on the one hand, it’s a very cool presentation and leans into the whole expedition theme. But on the other hand (and this seems to be mentioned in some negative reviews), levels can have more than one solution/exit and it can leave you with a constant nagging feeling of “did I do everything there was to do back there?” There is certainly satisfaction in knowing when you’re completely done with a puzzle and can move on without any doubts. But the good thing is that you can reach the credits and call it a day. Or you can go back and search for all those secrets and alternative paths. There’s certainly a lot for secret hunters to search for and explore.
a good chill game
This was a pretty unique experience in the way that it felt like two entire games built into one.
The first one is a pretty relaxing, simple puzzle game with a lot of goofy jokes, and the other is a DLC level difficulty spike that uses so many previously unimportant parts of the world that you essentially have to play the whole thing again just to understand what the snowman hints could even be referring too. Sure you might accidentally stumble on some of those on the first go through, but just about every person will not be willing or able to solve them in that moment thanks to some discovery of the logs they aren't familiar with.
While this is very jarring and will put off a lot of people who weren't expecting such a difficult puzzle game, once you get started on a few, it can be very enjoyable. Can be being the main thing because many of those snowman puzzles feel more like an exercise in needing to trace the end of the sequence back to the beginning. This is still a good brain exercise, but thanks to the four way movement, there are significantly fewer things needed to try and think through which makes even the really tough puzzles feel like a chore rather than a triumphant moment. Because you won't have to think too hard through any individual step using this mindset, it doesn't feel like solving a problem, just following a series of steps.
This game does it WAY better than most, even in the recent explosion of Sokoban games, but it's unfortunate that it still falls prey to this issue.
Other than that, this was a great time. The relaxing music made frustrating moments still feel nice to push through, the quality of life features were about as good as you could hope for, and it really was magical seeing all the different interactions possible in the ruleset crafted. An excellent game and one that most people will enjoy.
A masterpiece of a puzzle-game! It really pushes simple mechanics to their absolute limit, this is brilliant.
The real expedition is the friends you make along the way.
Fairly simple mechanics, but some segments are incredibly challenging.
Pretty good art direcction, very cozy atmosphere.
Decent overall, although it can get very repetitive very soon and to 100%; some of hidden puzzles are quite obscure and obtuse.
I always love a good puzzle game, and to me a good puzzle game is one that after a while I get stumped, but then when I finally figure out the solution, it's either while not even trying to play the game or I just finally figure it out and both make me feel smart, this game does that really well.
Quality puzzle game, many puzzle
Beat the core game without hints
Some of the puzzles i definitely spent cumulatively an hour or more on
Once I started collecting all the snowmen i used the "All Snowmen Spoiler Free Hint Guide" on the workshop
Some of the meta cross island puzzles are really hard to spot
It invites players to solve relaxing puzzles and explore a whimsical world. With its unique approach to problem-solving and serene atmosphere, it’s perfect for those looking for a thoughtful and visually appealing adventure.
genius
I love deforestation!
👍👍
So far, great! The world feels enormous, the puzzles are interesting, the visuals and audiodesign are soothing but engaging.
As a long-time fan of sokoban-type games, I love it! Definitely the kind of game I want to 100%.
I have friends now
A nice concept that never reaches it's full potential. I will admit I very much disliked Cosmic Express from the same developers as it presented challenges that just weren't fun or intuitive to solve, instead leading the players in circles in an endless chase of trial & error, but I went into A Monster's Expedition with an open mind, hoping the developers learned from their past mistakes.
The good news: they have! The bad news: they have, too much so. The game takes you through various interconnected islands. The main mechanic stays the same throughout the game: push over trees and roll around the logs into the right positions. The mechanic itself works fine and the general artstyle and tone of the game are very nice. The main problem is: the game just isn't satisfying.
To me, puzzle games are at their best when everything in the game just comes together in a nice, harmonious way. Solving a difficult puzzle after thinking for a long while, or knowing that there is a goal to reach, and trying to puzzle out how to get there. From start to finish, A Monster's expedition sends you criss-cross through this world of islands. You may solve a couple islands in one area, then board a raft to get to a different area at the other side of the map, then a few minutes later board another raft to go somewhere completely different. Fast travel exists, which is nice, but that gameplay flow just wasn't fun to me.
You often won't completely finish an area before the game sends you across the entire ocean because some side islands may be harder to reach, or you may not know how, or you may even need to board a raft from a completely different area of the game! How can someone expect that to be fun? Sure, it's not needed to complete everything just to finish the game, but I found it very unsatisfying to the point where I didn't even want to find the last few exhibits and islands I haven't completed yet, because how to get there was obscured by the game to the point I would need to have a walkthrough open at all times. And don't even get me started on the snowmen.
Above all, though, the game is extremely repetitive as the main mechanic never changes and only barely builds on itself. You eventually have logs that take up two spaces, and the aforementioned rafts come into play, but that's EVERYTHING. I only rarely had to think more than two minutes for an island and I am really not smart. The game is too easy, too repetitive and the exhibits try too hard to be humorous without really giving any purpose as to why they're even there, aside from maybe breaking up the tedium for the ten seconds it takes you to read them.
At the very least I finished A Monster's Expedition, unlike Cosmic Express. But, while not as obtuse and full of trial & error as Cosmic Express, A Monster's Expedition lets the pendulum go too far the other direction, making most of the game extremely trivial while making side content very obscure and hard to reach, which just doesn't make for a satisfying, flowing puzzle experience. It's not the worst puzzle game I have ever played, but if you like to challenge yourself with puzzles that are satisfying and varied to solve, I would suggest looking elsewhere.
Fun little puzzle game. Though I got stuck and even the hints didn't help. Pointing me to an island I already completed with no other hints to guide "what I needed to do differently". Gave up and started trying to move logs around from other islands instead. Never finished the game.
