The art on this game is really beautiful. The only thing I didn't quite liked is that the potata's art is completely different from the style of the rest of the game and NPCs. Maybe they simplified it so the animations were easier to make.
The story is really basic. You destroy a flower, by mistake (?), and have to go around looking for it's petals.
Nice short game for those looking for something simple to play.
Beware of the spiky flying thing, it will probably make you go nuts.
Badly designed platform, with clunky story.
Worst of all is that it isn't completely localized and the transition scenes had the naming still in Russian.
I would have requested a refund but I bought the game on whim a year ago and thus the 14 day refund was not an option.
Potata is a cute puzzle platformer that is pleasant to play. I liked the variety of platforming and solving actual puzzles, though I'm aware there will be others who don't like having puzzles in their games. The soundtrack is lovely and the characters can be quite charming.
It has a few flaws I can think of:
1. There are some typo or grammar mistakes with the English version
2. The transition/loading screens to the next areas are left in Russian except for the village one
3. The background story/lore is kind of thrown throughout the game through notes randomly
4. The ending or last levels felt slightly rushed
The typo and English ones happen sometimes but not too often. What's said is often clear. The transition screens are only black screens with the names of the areas. You're not missing any other info. The third flaw felt a bit weird. No matter where you went, you saw notes scattered everywhere about the villagers. How did the notes end up in such dangerous areas? I did enjoy reading them for the most part. The fourth flaw is a bit personal perhaps. The ending felt sudden. It felt like there could have been more levels or a better way to end the game?
All of the flaws mentioned are picky for the most part. I had a good time playing this. It wasn't challenging but it wasn't too easy either. If you like those kind of games, then it's worth trying. Especially when it's on sale. That's when I got it.
Adorable puzzle platform game with nice soundtrack, has fun and challenging levels with difficult puzzles that are still beatable without too much trouble. Not entirely sure about the moral at the end of the story, but that kinda fits for something folktale inspired.
What a waste of art skills. Clunky movement controls and very boring pace. So sorry, I just couldn't spend more of my time on this beautiful game. I'd give it 2/5, an average platformer, but steam only accepts yes or no, so I'm giving it a no.
Well... they do say to never judge a book by its cover or a game by its screenshots. Judging by Potata: fairy flower's screenshots, the game does look very interesting. But by playing it, you can clearly see it needed more time in the oven because of all its flaws.
The story progression of the game is nonsensical at best. The game starts with the titular character (Potata) trying to find a healing potion for her fox and help her mom make a pie. And her mom is using a cauldron to bake that pie for some reason... Anyway, Potata ventures out to find some ingredients. But suddenly, a portal appears out of nowhere and she decides to enter it for no reason. This teleports Potata to another place, where she has to overcome deadly obstacles and nightmarish creatures, and finally reach the fairy that protects her village from enemies. The fairy then attacks almost immediately because Potata apparently did something to her favorite flower at some point. After surviving the fairy's attacks, she then acts like a bitch, saying "Yeah I'm not gonna protect your village anymore. Go beat all the monsters yourself with this wooden sword kiddo" and mentions Potata's father out of nowhere for no reason. Then... okay timeout for a second...
No, I did not do anything to perform a sequence break; this is actually how the story goes on. What is the story plot trying to do here? How did we go from zero to a hundred? Who is this goddamn fairy? The main character just wanted to save a random fox and eat pie, where did all this "save the village" thing come from? Why are there random letters everywhere? Who is this Luna named girl that acts like a jerk, appears everywhere and wants to rip us off? The story raises too many questions and introduces too many characters, yet wants us to actually know about them without even explaining them! It also doesn't help that some parts of the game have not translated properly into English and show Russian texts or have grammatical errors, or that a part of the story is told through the trailer on the store page and not the game itself! Yeah, remember that fairy who was angry because the main character did something to a flower? That all happened in the second trailer on the store page and that's why I did not know anything about it.
Sadly, the gameplay does not help the situation either. The game is basically another normal platformer, which is not a bad thing by itself. You just go from point A to point B, grab some stuff, finish some puzzles and then go to the next stage. However, the problem is that the game is extremely boring. The game never feels fun to play and is always like "fetchquest, puzzle, fetchquest, puzzle" without any kind of satisfactory result. Not only that, even exploration is not rewarded properly and it feels like you HAVE TO explore the stages to collect the game's currency (blue and green stones). You have to do this because not only you need the currency for re-saving the game, but puzzle hints are also mind-bogglingly expensive. So if you have nothing on you to buy a hint to a puzzle you can't solve, you won't be able to proceed without grinding or looking up a playthrough.
The other problem with the gameplay is that it has a bunch of weird design choices. For example, I opened a locked chest with a key, just to find another key inside of it. So what was the point of that chest? Or the re-saving mechanic... why is there no traditional checkpoint activation and the player has to re-save their progress with in-game currency? And why the price for re-saving the progress goes up throughout the game? There's no need to make the saving system this confusing and irregular.
The other thing I have to mention is the soundtrack. When you get to the main menu, you can hear a cheerful track. But the gameplay does not go the same way and instead, uses very chill and folklore based music tracks that unfortunately are also very short and limited in number. I can see some people liking these, but I honestly did not like them at all. In fact, I think the soundtrack actually made me irritated because of how repetitive it was, making the gameplay more infuriating as a result.
So overall, I don't like this game. I don't know how this game has gotten a very positive ranking on Steam (at the time of writing this) or such questionably high praises from a couple people, because I honestly had a miserable time with it and found it very flawed. I have to advise you to stay clear from this game and even more so if you have played tons of platformer games in the past.
I'm not going to give this game a negative review, because it is lovely and fun, but it should be noted that the translation for this game is borderline nonsensical. At this point it would be a better game without any dialogue.
I enjoyed this game a lot. It's quite easy to complete but I liked that for a change; it wasn't a grind to finish and was more relaxing and enjoyable because of this. I really like the music and art-style and the controls felt quite natural. I would recommend for someone who isn't looking for an extremely challenging platformer.
Potata: Fairy Flower is a 2d platformer puzzle game. Beat it in roughly 5.2 hours using a controller. Difficulty is Medium, with some of the puzzles and running challenges being tricky. Cute game to play; great for kids. You can even beat the game without hurting anything (If you're savvy enough).
- Graphics are great. Everything from the different levels to the homes to the character art all has a unique charm to it.
- There's a small amount of music, but the soundtrack has a nice Celtic folklore vibe that fits with everything. Wish there was an OST available, because this'd be great music for studying to.
- Characters are funny, whimsical, and cute. So is their dialogue. Well, mostly... People can be a bit of a jerk to Potata, but I like how she overcomes bullies and saves the day.
- Speaking of dialogue, when I first started Potata, the menu was in Russian. Switching to English was easy enough, but it threw me off. Some of the English translations in the game are passable.
- There's a fox! Squeak! Snort!
- The gameplay is great. That's why you get this. Jumping around avoiding deadly cockelburs and finding items to thwart bitey plants while save points seem tauntingly far away will seem hard at first, but once you get use to it the game is pretty awesome. The puzzles are also really fun to figure out. The idea of a quest list keeps Potata from being linear.
In summary, Potata: Fairy Flower is a charming, short platformer with plenty to do, a nice variety of puzzles to solve, and a weekend of fun to be had. The price is right, and it's unique enough to stand out on its own in any gamer collection. Potata is witch that perseveres through bullies and naysayers and finds her own way to tackle challenges and get through life.
Negative review.
Such a cute underrated game! I recommend
Very fun and adorable platformer. The puzzles can be challenging, but definitely doable. Very pretty and the story is great.
I really enjoyed playing this game.
Pros :
- graphics are cute
- music is nice
- levels design are smooth
- puzzles are challenging
Cons :
- Save points are confusing at the beginning of the game
- Some animations are a bit poor (nothing glitchy, just perfectible)
In conclusion, it's a cool game to play and I would really appreciate a second one with new features like double jump, more fights and maybe some gameplay with the fox.
The game has a cute design and fun folky music. It's not very easy, but also not 'cuphead' hard. I love the characters and the grouchy feel of the adorable world makes the whole experience so much fun.
Great game! Artwork is amazing, gameplay is relaxing, there are couple of hardcore moments however. Completely walked thru it in 9 hours, reaching the third ending. I can recommend it to both kids and adults.
Not a bad game; but I would not recommend it if you want experientce from games like Braid, Trine or recent Moster Boy. Controls are awful. Potata missing ladder grabs and other ladscape objects (leading to quick death). Collisions are bad. Like, look at celeste (where you can sneak through spikes) and here you just get hurt/die without even touching things.
Sounds generally good, but music freak me out after almost two minutes. (music from Monster Boy, The Messenger or Hollow Knight I would be listening for hours).
Maybe I would be back for playing, but first experience just irritating.
For devs: please fix ladder interaction, it is like 40% of every platformer experience! You should be able very easy grab ladder and jump from it.
I really like art style: such juicy, bright colors! Definitely ready to recommend this game to anyone who loves platformerы and puzzles.
Beatiful game, like the bosses and art style!
So far I have just started playing this game but I can’t tear myself away anymore) Awesome atmosphere and very nice colorful graphics. Very cute characters, and just magical environments immediately create the feeling of a fairy tale and adventure.
Meditative gameplay reminds me the Fantastic Dizzy. Definitely a mustplay)
It is such a pleasure just being in fairy-tale world of this game and enjoying the magical artwork, looking at picturesque locations and relishing amazing grafics! It's awesome that there are interesting puzzles to solve and places to think and engage your brain, hidden secrets, positive humour and cozy atmosphere! This is a truly masterpiece and I'm a big fan of "Potata" game! I think it's my favourite new one and I'm sure that I will play it more than once (for now I'm in the process of playing and discovering it for the first time).
This game is perfect for people of all ages, and for those who appreciate old quest games and platformers too - it brings up such good and warm childhood feelings! If you like such games as Oddmar, Ori, Rayman - you will absolutely love this one too!
