DEEP 8 is a really good sci-fi rpg maker game that makes me think back to my younger days. Although the game is obviously meant to appeal more to the adult audience due to the themes it addresses. Throughout much of the game there is a good sense of progression in both character development and story. The end, however, is a little abrupt. I like both the combat and the ability system very much, which overall almost always leads to exciting fights. The allusions to other games also put a smile on my face from time to time. To my taste, there could have been a little more late-game content, but all in all, it's a really good game that I would recommend without further ado.

Deep 8 is a highly individualistic RPG-maker-like game. It touches a lot of disturbing topics and therefore is not suitable for children. For me, it was a highly-enjoyable ride in which I admired the way that topics were treated that haven't been elaborated on much in games so far.

While the first 20-30 minutes of the game didn't get me hooked and I struggled a little with the (in my opinion) ugly character design (it was good to replace the original renders with pixelated ones), there was soon a moment in which it became quite evident how dark and also creative this game would be. From an interesting combat system, via cool riddles and highly-memorable characters and impressive world-building till great twists, Deep 8 had really a lot to offer and I will remember it as one of the best rpg-maker-like games that I've played so far (and those have been quite a lot).

It is hard to sum the game up without spoilers, so let's just call it a surprising, dark and weirdly enjoyable odyssey that you won't forget easily. The game world is very well thought-out and makes sense, and it is one of a kind. Remember when you played mass effect and thought, whoa, they built their own world, a space opera without copying from existing space operas? That's kinda the feeling I also had while advancing through Deep 8's main story. Different races, different places, a lot of surprises, nothing that you have seen before too often. Drawing inspiration from typical JRPGs, Deep 8 is a little grindy at times, but this is compensated perfectly by the fun combat system.

This is a 100% recommendation for people who can deal with adult topics and are open for quite some "wtf" moments, which in the end all make sense. The story unfolds in a very satisfying way. Deep 8 is a game that deserves support. If you enjoy darker rpg-maker-like games such as Vampires Dawn and similar, this is for you.

But the most attractive aspect of Deep 8, which also made me ignore with ease its (few) shortcomings, is this one:

Deep 8 is exactly what the author had in mind, and nothing else. There was a great idea for a game world and a story, and that was made into a game made with visible passion. Seriously, what is there not to like about it?

I'd love to see a successor to Deep 8, and of course I have a recommendation for the developers: More of this! :)

P.S.: the playtime indication is wrong, it took me a little more than 30 hours to beat the game.

Deep 8 has a 90s jrpg feel to it and takes place in a gritty setting.
The worlds are well-built and the combat and skill mechanics are unique and allows you customization.
The story is hard to predict and interesting. I'm enjoying it.

All I can say is "Wow this game is so cool!"

It has been a long time since a JRPG has hooked me. The game can be a little bit grindy at times. I don't normally like grinding, but it wasn't that bad in this game. Sometimes in maps you have to backtrack quite a bit to figure out the puzzles. Combat is difficult but not impossible, it kept me entertained/didn't feel boring at all.

The game is advertised as a sci-fi, but it's more of a sci-fantasy (which is totally cool too!). It's obvious the developer put a lot of time and effort into this game. Some of the cinematics in the game really immerse the player into this universe as well.

Some of the sexual dialogue or the slurs, or taking the panties of people out of drawers was kind of weird and I think kind of took me out of the game a little bit, but wasn't a dealbreaker or anything. It made more sense though once I found out about Ramirez's troubled family history though.

The character models are kind of funny, they're kind of "uncanny valley", but it didn't bother me, it has it's own unique style, doesn't look like the thousand other games I've played before.

PROS:
1. Multiple mini-games.
2. Good story.
3. Simple yet rewarding gameplay mechanics
4. Cool Music/Custom soundtrack
5. Hard/Challenging (which I like)
6. Interesting Characters/Interesting world.
7. Music
8. Lengthy game but doesn't get boring.

CONS:
1. Sometimes a lot of backtracking to find clues and other stuff.
2. Some of the sexual dialogue and slurs seemed a bit out of place.

I hesitated at first with the price, but I can tell you it's totally worth it. Pick it up and try it, you'll get hooked like I did. You'll definitely have a unique experience playing this game.

Overall I'd rate this a 9/10 and I think it's underrated based on what I see with the number of people who have played it, but I will say I think this game is niche. But I like niche games more than mainstream usually. Great job guys! Are you going to make another game in the future?

Finally a great modern JRPG for a sophisticated target group

Just to make that cIear:

I've played the Demo of "Deep 8" previously and all my impressions are based on it, so you don't need to wonder about my miniscule playtime for the full game right now. The actual demo I played for about 8 to 9 hours.

Up to this date, this is probably one of the most technically impressive games that were ever created with one of the legacy RPG-Makers.
A lot of effort was put on graphical fidelity like particle effects, several backgrounds of parallax scrolling, 3D-modeled ingame "cutscenes".
Tons of animations, everything was made from scratch as it seems. Asides from a few sound effects perhaps, everything is completely original and independed from the core-assets of the RPG-Maker.

Combined with it's Sci-Fi Setting, which isn't seen that much for turn based JRPG-styled games, the game shines bright with unique identity. Either you're fond of it or not, but this is clearly a labour of love and detail.

The same can be said about it's combat design, which features an ATB-styled battle system you might be familiar from the SNES Final Fantasy games, so i'm not going into detail here.

Just to make clear where I come from, at my age and experience, i'm usually not so easy to impress anymore, most JRPG's just follow a standard formula of attacking and healing and if it doesn't suffice, you just grind enough to attack and heal even more.

Deep 8 circumvents this tedious spiral with focussing on tight mechanics, where every action can make a difference.

Most important is the feature called "potion tolerance" whenever you use a potion, an invisible counter goes down (you can make it visible for x turns in the option menue if you want) if the counter reaches zero, you only heal half HP, if it goes below you don't heal at all and even can harm yourself. The enemies are also affected by that feature and you can for example throw potions at them, to lower their potion tolerance.
This small simple quirk, prevents that you can stall battles for an eternity, MP management is tight and the game really stresses your critical thinking in battle, you should use EVERY ressource and ability at your dispoal and while i'm not far enough to comment about the encounter variety, what I experienced so far leaves a lot of great potental open.

That alone wouldn't ensure a fun combat system, there is also an interactive component, whenever you try to hit the enemy with normal attacks. It's quite engaging because instead of having random factors if you hit or miss or inflict crits, it's up to yourself hitting a specific spot on a bar with the right timing.

But sure, even this doesn't surprise me that much without something truly unique and this is where the "mod system" comes into play.

In Deep 8 you don't have any equipment, everything is handled through these mentioned "mods". For every character are expansive Skilltrees available where you spend "AP" for learning new mods, perks and spells.
AP and EXP are both gained by defeating enemies but you can decide for yourself how to weight their distribution. So you can increase your AP input to 150% by decreasing your EXP input to 50% for example.

Mods are special "settings" that decide how your character behaves in combat. There are 3 kinds of it:

- Frist ones regulates how you behave when attacking the enemy
- Second ones decides how you behave when you become attacked or generally how enemies react to the character with the mod
- Third ones generally change the behaviour how your character interacts with the rest of the party, as far as I understand.

You can always equip one mod of every kind, but you're able to change them any turn, without wasting the turn of the character. You can kinda compare it with "paradigm shift" of Final Fantasy 13, but it's more complex because later in the game you have an ehaustive list of mods, where you can choose and combine 3 sorts in every possible constellation and already early on, the game stresses you to do that. If you don't spend your AP in the right mods, you'll be at a large disadvantage so careful observation what you actually need is important.

So for example, one mod allows your character to fill up your "limit" bar for special attacks faster, but also makes them more vulnerable. While for the shy character there is a mod, that increases their evasion and makes them become hit less often.
As you can see, using both of these mods for the correspondent character would be unwise, because then the one who attains more damage becomes hit more often. So you can use them to your advantage or you can screw yourself over if you don't think about your actions.

Still it isn't too complex at the beginning, because you unlock more mods over course of the game, so you never become overwhelmed by too much choice.

Characters are a "slow-burner"

The combat mechanics were probably the main reason why I bought this game in the end after playing the demo, but it doesn't mean the narrative can be seen as secondary.

As far as I can see the the Sci-Fi Setting itself is an "excuse" to implement some very heavy emotional- even sexual themes, at least that's what I predict.
The game starts with you playing the "bad guy" killing countless of innocent civilians, this quicky establishes the "enemy" you fight onward. The actual perspecitve is told through the lenses of... well everyone to be honest cause you can read everyones mind. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

Main character is Ramirez, a shy, even socialphobic boy that struggles hard to surpress his perverted fantasies when interacting with females, not the kind of way how you would expect it from an "clichee" anime protagonist, it's really something he suffers from and why he always ends up becoming pushed around, not be seen as an respectful individual. But it's not others who are to blame for his inner struggles, he gets himself in the way, there is no "cool emo edgy anime protagonist background" behind it, Ramirez is just... awkward and that makes him an relatable protagonist for many, perhaps too relatable, because he represents sides on us we want to overcome, not embrace

The perfect counterpart is his coworker "Melin" an rude, unsentimetal woman that rather acts rashly but if calm still possesses more common sense in human interactions than Ramirez

Seeing the dynamic between both turn out makes up for an exciting and enjoyable narrative.
Way too late into the demo (so I can't say too much about it) comes "Chloe" into play, a winged humanoid who can control all kinds of "magical beasts" (sloppy explanation I know)
But this one seems to treat Ramirez much nicer than Melin, almost intentionally to provoke her. At the end of the demo I was very eager too see where the journey is going and how the following party members will enrich the dynamic between Ramirez and the other characters.

As for the overall story, there is definitely something dooming in the background and the game doesn't get tired in showing you how brutal and ruthless the enemy is.

Later on you can visit different planets but up so far I can't tell too much about it.
What I could explore on the first planet already was very special, maybe too special for some delicate people. There is an SM-Village where women become worshipped as goddesses and so they live an extremely sadistic lifestyle.
What really impressed me was the flying city of the winged humanoids, the amount of detail is impressive. It's a dark cloudy place, where the resident can manifest spirits/magical beasts that surpress their self-harming desires.

All I can is say that after a while I got the feeling to surmise in which direction the story might be going and that's where it catched me, especially the last enemy encounter in the demo is a splendid blend between gameplay and story.

Give the demo a shot, if you are bored of formulaic JRPG's that play by itself, you will love this (I reached the char limit D:)

DEEP 8 is a grand and ambitious Sci-Fi RPG with a very personal story amidst a vast space as well as a great war.

In DEEP 8 you play as the perverted and effeminate Ramirez and his band of misfits during a war lead by the Droons. It is Ramirez' and Melings job to desperately find a way to turn the tables all the while battling with their very own and personal issues. The characters are all very memorable and interesting right down to the side characters. The writing - especially if you play the game in English - can be a bit wonky at times, but personally that just adds to the charme of the game, as it strikes the perfect balance between campy and serious. Bundle that with cinematic and well-produced cutscenes and beautiful setpieces and you have yourself a great presentation. Quick disclaimer though: The game takes on real life problems as well as taboo-topics in a really direct and blunt manner (i. E. discrimination, slurs, etc.) and I can see how that might be problematic to some, but if you can look past that you got yourself one really weird, entertaining and effed up story!

The gameplay is close to what you would expect from late Super Nintendo JRPG or early Playstation JRPG. Movement is on a grid-based system, the fighting happens from a sideview and uses an ATB system similar to Final Fantasy 7. It is a lot deeper than those games however as player reflexes are involved (think Paper Mario or Mario and Luigi) and there are a lot of systems that play into each other. Characters can build up an immunity to potions for example, you can set EXP and AP (skillpoint) distribution in your menus and you have an extensive skill and mod system. And of course there's buffs and debuffs, strengths and weaknesses, etc. Almost every NPC you find has something interesting to say and there's plenty of side quests, that you can check in a quest log that even shows if you've missed any of the side content. Of course there's "secret" bosses in this game as well and one of the characters is a summoner, just like the old JRPG would have done!

Some gameplay additions can be a bit harder to get around, like the jumping for example, but the dev seemed to know many people struggled with it and created an option to auto-jump. And recently with the addition of the easy mode the game has become even more accessible, although I personally think that even the easy mode will be a bit too hard for a fair amount of players. I've played the demo and beta of this game before there was an easy mode and for the sake of reviewing this game I decided to try the easy mode and got a bit too reckless... and of course I died.

The music and sound design give this game even more of a unique identity. The choice of instruments is very uncommon and there are a lot of disharmonies and unusual scales, that really cement the alien and avantgarde vibe of this game. There are a few times where sounds feel a little out of place, but never to such a degree that it breaks my immersion and most of the time the sound effects fit really well and support the gameplay perfectly.

All in all this game is an amazing diamond in the rough and if you consider that most of this game was created by one person it is even more impressive. If you then consider that this game was built in RPG Maker 2003 and that more than half of the visual effects and other features of this game shouldn't technically be possible on that engine (shoutout to EasyRPG), the impressive-meter goes through the roof. If you don't mind the very obscene and sexual subject matter and wanna have a really unique gaming experience built on classic JRPG tropes, then DEEP 8 is for you!

Ok so this one is abit tricky to review, I did refund this game, that said I do recommend it.

Pros:
-Very Strong personality, like one of the strongest ive seen, this game has heart.
-Traditional Jrpg turnbased mechanics.
-Interesting skill tree, i particularly loved some of the spells like.. FloorFart...
-Fast forward options x3 and x10
-Very well thought out puzzle design, the first dungeon has a few puzzles and they are better thought out than most AAA games nowadays, I wont go into detail for spoilers but I really did enjoy them.
-Character personality, this is a big one for me, most games... probably as much as 99.9% of games will have character dialogue, but you never know what your characters are thinking, its one of the ways that video games and movies are still inferior to books, however this game addresses that complaint of mine. You ALWAYS know what the character is thinking as when they give their normal dialogue there is also a blue parenthesis section in there as well that is their inner thoughts, its a nice level of character development.

Cons:
-Ugly as sin, I love pixels and ps1 era polys. But the polys are like reboot from the 90s and the pixels were worse than anything ever released on the snes, even so I would still have happily played through.
-Unbalanced - this is a big one, the enemies are oddly unbalanced, they die in 2 or 3 hits, but meanwhile CAN and do wipe your part in just as many. Heal dont heal all the way so they enemies can output more DPS than you can heal.
-Slow clunky controls - so this one has the squared off movement style classic in old jrpgs, this doesnt bother me because i grew up on those and love them, but for some its a non starter. The biggest problem is the speed of movement, the game has an x3 and x10 fast forward option by holding a button, and you absolutely NEED to use it. On normal speed the game feels like running through waist deep water, on x3 it feels like an almost normal speed game and x10 feels like an x2 game. So good thing those options are there or i wouldnt have gotten as far as I did.

All told I DO recommend this game, it is not a bad game, it is not without its issues however. It feels like an early access title due to the unbalanced combat and the sluggish controls. Honestly if those were patched I would definitely give the game another try. The personality alone would make it worth the asking price. The looks con I listed is trivial, Unbalance and Sluggish controls bring down what would otherwise be a very good Indie title, I hope those get patched.
