After almost 40 hours I finished the game and I found fallout 1 to be a demo compared to fallout 2. In fallout 1 there weren't many quests beyond the simple "bring it to me, kill this guy, talk to him" but in fallout 2 everything changes. Quests like the one with the intelligent radscorpion, the one with the "haunted" farm in Modoc or even the one where you stop the officer from blowing up the power plant show that creativity matters and the side quests are even more important than the main ones in terms of creating the world in the game. I like the sense of humor and I think it's another thing that creates the post-apocalyptic atmosphere, the dark humor fits the wasteland perfectly. The main quest is just as simple and unambitious as the main quest in fallout 1 but in its essence it's not as stupid as the master and mutants plan. Fallout 2 has an even better post-apocalyptic feel than the first part, thanks to more locations and a more philosophical dilemma about their inhabitants, the quests are simply better developed and much more interesting. Also the music is a masterpiece, but it is not entirely a feature of fallout 2, because there are many songs that were in fallout 1 and were reused in fallout 2. I am 200% sure that I will play this game again and do it 10 hours a day with the same passion
its very fun if you decide to pour a lot of time into the game. the characters are really fun, and you can become a mobster, but learning the game is made hard by the worst tutorial in history, a lack of explanation about mechanics, and extremely broken/janky quests. Even for a game of this time period theres a real lack of tutorials/player help.
Decent game that is very similar to fallout 1. The story also continues on from fallout 1 rather than being completely new like with the other fallout games. Once you get used to the mechanics, it's pretty fun to play. It was nice taking a break from the keyboard as you can do everything with the mouse. Still buggy due to the age but worth a play through.
You were critically hit for no damage.
The bruises will look good and the scars will make good party talk.
oh and uhm
where may thine powered armor be
Worst game i've ever played. Nothing makes sense in the game, totally wasted my money and time. If you want to experience most annoying game in the world, give it a try.
This game burnt my crops, poisoned my land, kicked me so many times in the nether regions that it managed to crit & send me back several hours of progress, hardlocked after I got it on with Mrs. Bishop so I had to make a whole new character. And yet, after all this, I still think this game is a masterpiece.
The gameplay is massively improved from the last, the world feels like it's evolved from the eighty years between Fallout 1, while the atmosphere is still bleak at times the game isn't afraid to have a little fun & throw in something silly, the story still has the same fluidity as the first with even more varied choices to decide the fate of the various settlements and to top it all off, the ability to become a...hold on, Steam might censor this. A corn star . One of the best Fallouts, bar none, you can't reach these peaks again even if Bethesda kidnapped the remnants of the original team and forced them to work on Fallout 5 with an Alien Blaster between the eyes.
I just couldn't get into this. Ironically, it starts with a really dumb tutorial temple and the rest of the game doesn't give you a hint of direction whatsoever. I just wondered around and never amounted to anything. If it wanted to be a sandbox game it could have used a bit more sand.
I like the Game because its a true discursion from the original and enhances playstyles and as an rpg is almost on par with the original dragon age imho and it hass a built in learning curve downsides are,, its almost too freely open mapped which is also a thing i like though,, but the main quests are tracked in the beginning by starting and gathere=ing information,, like a disco elysium styled game mixed with the technicality of wasteland 3.. disliked having to learn about happenings in the beginning my less intelligent npcs who run the bars and make the talking in the beginning somewhat chorous and some of the mundanity of the questline.
great fallout experience gotta get used to the gameplay though and do some reading but im on my 2nd playthrough still finding new things
Played a modded version, so it won't show my playtime, it's about 26-30 hours.
Better than the first, definetly, and it greatly rewards those that came from Fallout 1.
Right at the true first mission, my mouse continuously disappeared and continued to disappear and movement issue, complete with a windows load icon and processing issues. Tried many things to try to play, but killing 1 creature took over 20 mins. Not worth the effort.
I finished Fallout 1 and that had more stability in game than Fallout 2. I do not recommend spending the time with non functional issues and just watch a review of it on YouTube.
Everything that isn't gameplay is expertly made. It got the style, writing, characters, atmosphere, just chef's kiss. This is one of those special games you don't forget. But i do wish it got a remaster, maybe some day.
If you love turn based combat, it doesn’t get much better than this for its genre. My only wish is that it didn’t require so many keys/buttons, I would love to see a modern day port as is to something other than Steam.
Frank Horrigan did nothing wrong.
Game crashes like a paper plane, but probably the most in-depth and fun Fallout game. Only setback is the glitches, and the learning curve.
This is one of the hardest and most annoying games I have ever played in my entire life. You should play it too.
Still a great game. Had some problems running on Windows 11 though. But CPU_USAGE_FIX=1 advice has helped.
Critically Hit for No Damage, The bruise will look nice, and maybe the scars will make good party talk
10/10 best fallout ever
This is probably one of the best RPGs ever made, and it's story is definitely better than any other Fallout game besides New Vegas. My only issue with this game is that it's kinda hard to get into. You don't start out with any stimpaks, guns, or flares, just a spear, but I guess that's just the spirit of the hardness of games in the 90s, as well as that classic Fallout spirit. Speaking about guns, you also have to wait a while before you can get your first gun.
SPOILERS: I got both a rifle and shotgun near Modoc at the Ghost Farm by just stealing and doing the main questline, helping the two communities achieve peace.
Sometimes as well there are some glitches. For example, I can't experience the game's OST (which is amazing by the way, it makes you feel like you're actually in a wasteland), for some reason.
All in all, play this game if you like Fallout, or are just a fun of classic RPGs.
Alright, so Fallout 2. This game took me too long to complete! It is undeniably a monumental piece of RPG history, laying a lot of the groundwork for the behemoth the Fallout franchise has become today. You can really see the DNA of modern Fallout games in its intricate world-building, the freedom it gives you in tackling quests, and that darkly humorous, post-apocalyptic vibe that's just so unique. The sheer depth of choices and consequences is impressive. The graphics is what you should expect from a game released in 1998 but you can appreciate how the developers had to lean heavily on text to paint a vivid picture, and in many ways, it worked.
However, let's be real, this game demands a serious time commitment and while the writing is often fantastic, there are stretches where the sheer volume of text can feel overwhelming. It definitely contributes to the feeling that finishing the game is a marathon, not a sprint, which some people might not have enjoyed, So, while I appreciate its historical significance and the immersive world it built, be prepared for a lengthy journey with a lot of reading if you decide to try this.
If you play fallout 1 and this back to back you WILL burn out. also in both my playthroughs the game started to fall apart at around reaching shady sands even with all the bug fixes, my money would randomly fluctuate between 900 and 13000 every time i loaded the game or entered a new area and it retroactively affected my old save files and it kept voiding every single quest item so i had to cheat them back in again. aside from all the combat bugs the most insulting one by far was seeing all my perfect end slides i worked so hard on, just for the game to claim i MURDERED an entire settlement "proving genocide is always a viable option". aside from the engine falling apart as you progress this is still my second (maybe third) favorite fallout after the first. very worth it
Fallout 2 is often billed as "just more of Fallout 1"--which is exactly the problem with it. Fallout 1 was satirical art; Fallout 2 is the result of taking Fallout 1's skin--mechanics, world design, artstyle, and adding "more of it" as though these elements are interchangeable and will result in the same product.
Without Tim Cain's direction and with the time crunch the team had (Chris Avellone worked on Planescape: Torment while he was working on this), what you have is a dull, ugly mishmash of whatever dull 20-something geeks either found hilarious or edgy.
Since I don't view games as Products (TM), yes, this lack of focus and artistic merit does really ruin the game for me even if it's "Fallout 1 but better." Hell, it didn't even carry over one of the crucial elements that added a lot of tension to Fallout 1: the time limits, likely because Gamers found it inconvenient. There are QoL updates, but this long after the game's release, they're barely noticeable.
what is there to say its fallout 2. A very good RPG with odd oldschool controls and amazing story and voice acting.
Great real role playing game. If your struggling your probably stupid and impatient.
A very great old game, you either already know it or will see it out as a newer person. This version on Steam comes with a high res patch and sfall patch that are awesome on today's resolutions and 16:9. However I could never get it work well on Win 11 even with some workarounds. However it works perfectly on the same computer on Linux using Proton 9. I highly recommend this game and the patches it comes with but if you have a newer computer and windows it might not be a perfect experience.
this is one of the basis of all fallout games and marks one of the starts of the best types of games in gaming history
Good game on it's own, kinda a weird contrast to Fallout 1 tone-wise, however. But it's still pretty solid, and I can see why people like it.
ALSO AN IMMEDIATE FUCKING 10/10 BECAUSE OF FRANK HORRIGAN I FUCKING LOVE THIS MAN SO FUCKING MUCH ANJHBSDJHBASDHBUWADHBUAWUDHWAUHDUDWDUADUWDWDHWAUDJHB
yeah if you grew up playing the FPS ones its hard to get in to but its amazing story. so play it dummy.
I'll probably edit this later because, quite honestly, 3 hours weren't enough to get much out of this game so far. Not necessarily because it has a lot of content - I don't know that - but because combat just drags on for so long... Takes me 1 hour to kill off, like, 7 scorpions because my attacks always miss. Still, this is more about luck than the game's fault, and other than that it's been a fine experience so far. Not great, not bad, fine... I just really wanted to complain about how long combat takes in this review.
Not gonna lie, I use to LOVE this game. But, after playing so many newer games, Fallout 2 is almost unplayable. I don't know what's going on anymore in this game. Still, it's a classic, but at $15 there's no way I would buy this again.
Incredible game one of the best written games I've ever played. Highly recommend the game to anyone
The BEST instalment out of the entire Fallout series. Yeah, the old 90s graphics are dated, but this game has the best writing, plot, and missions. The music/atmosphere is perfectly suited to ever location. The world of characters contrast an enormous range of personalities and individual desires, with top notch voice acting for those who are applicable. The range of weapons and armour available to the character allow for you to tailor your play style. And the character creator, though detailed, allows for a wide range of builds. Also, be sure to install the Fallout 2 Restoration Project in order to play originally cut content and less bugs. By far the greatest post nuclear RPG on the market!
Amazing classic Fallout experience. all the crazy scary wasteland you want, and constantly dieing because its old school difficult. keep notes, you will need them. dont take risks. save often.
Okay as a zoomer you can play this is pretty simple in mechanics. My one complain is the sheer amount of references/4th wall meta jokes(really compared to 1 this is basically why we have fallout wacky humor) that get tiresome and how towns dont feel connected at all. That aside great game, brutal sometimes but keep a lot of saves and remember high ag/int is a must.
sold my body for 200 bucks. killed the bartender and his hooker. opened an orphanage. joined a cult and fixed a nuclear reactor
fallout 2 is my favorite game of all time. can not recommend it highly enough to anyone. played it many times since childhood.
straight up the best isometric crpg ever. incredibly open ended and with a ridiculous amount of content for having been developed in just one year. it starts out slow but give it some time and you won't be able to stop playing. we need 100 more games like fallout 2.
Very similar to the first Fallout, but with much more content and still has a crazy modding scene to it, even to this day.
no idea why but after loading into a save the world map stops working after you enter a new town as the game locks its self and becomes unplayable
The most beautiful thing about this game is knowing that none of the brainrotted normies coming from Todd "the Bod" Howard and Amazon's cashgrab slopshow will even get past the Temple of Trials. There's no need to gatekeep when the game already does it by default.
***SPOILERS*** - If you haven't played the game, buy it, and don't read this review until you've beaten it.
Fallout 2 is such an odd bag. Let me start this by saying it's a 10/10 game. It fixes most of the technical issues Fallout 1 had; quest or game breaking bugs are far less common, companions can be pushed out of the way, companions feel stronger than in 1 and are no longer a liability. All weapon classes feel more viable, even if some are not (throwing).
I do think think the game takes a step back from Fallout 1 in certain ways. Length was obviously a concern when developing this game; where 1 can be beat in 15 hours, 2 takes 50. There are more points of grinding - encounters are frequent, and often have many enemies and places to explore with ultimately no reward other than the exp from the monsters you kill. The humor in this game is a little less mature than 1, and less funny than in the Bethesda/Obsidian games. Levels can be a bit long. While it can be speedrun fairly quickly, it just feels like a less compact and tight package than 1.
On the flip side of this, I do wish this game was followed more closely by Bethesda in theme and continuity. Fallout 2 rarely feels like a post apocalyptic game. While there are slavers and raiders and monsters, there are also settlements and governments and life. This may be the only fallout game with towns that have notably new construction. Vehicles visibly work and are operable. Often, towns' and cities' main problems are not that of survival, but of politics and economics. While carrying a cynical attitude to contemporary life, there is something about recreating it after devastation that feels inherently optimistic.
Bethesda can only wish they could make something as good as the originals, they'd sacrifice even their firstborns if only they could achieve even an ounce of what made the originals great.
Fallout 2 is my personal favorite fallout game and in my top 3 games of all time (fallout 2, GTA V, farcry 5).
Fallout 2 has the best writing of any game that iv'e ever played, it's the 2nd funniest game iv'e ever played. If you don't want to play Fallout 2 because you don't like the game mechanics of Fallout 1, don't worry Fallout 2 has greatly improved the game play and it has so many quality of life improvements.
Gritty, Thoughtful, Deep, Expansive, Immersive, Funny, Taboo, Dark, Depressing, Psychedelic, Provocative, Frustrating and Satisfying all in one. Ultimate fallout. I wont lie tho the old school mechanics make it a bit painful to play. Especially the relentless hit percentages ;-;
Best game to drive around, fight mutants, star in p0rn films, and save the world
Tons of content, still havent experienced all of it
Just Finished it. The game doesn't hold your hand but google does.
This is my fourth Fallout game so far, and it's up there with New Vegas in my top 2. This expands so much upon the scope of Fallout 1. As an NCR fan, I was happy to see some of the early days of that faction and to help it to gain much of the strength that allowed it to expand westward into New Vegas. I also think the Enclave in this game compared to 3 is much more menacing and makes more sense. Speaking with the President was chilling. While the ending of the game was probably among the easiest so far, the overall difficulty of the game was probably the highest. The game is not very forgiving, and it definitely wants you to keep optimizing your and your companions' weapons and armor as you go. While this can be annoying in the moment, I think it's much more rewarding of a system than was present in Fallout 1. I also really enjoyed many of the cities in this game compared to 1 (and some other games), with New Reno being a favorite that I barely scratched the surface of due to the character I was playing, but would definitely spend a lot more time in during future playthroughs.
great game, but not as good as fallout 1.
the pros of fallout 2:
• good gameplay improvements over fallout 1, such as taking stimpacks from your inventory when you use them, instead of having you open up your inventory and put another stimpack in.
• the side quests were intriguing and most of the time very worth it
• generally more content overall
• figuring out pieces of the main story were just as fun as in fallout 1
the cons of fallout 2:
• the leveling at the final part of the game is just brutal, and there isn't enough content for you to be leveled enough for the final area, having you grind late game enemies to get enough XP
• the main story, especially at the end of the game, wasn't as intriguing as the main story in fallout 1
• some of the quests were a little frustrating to figure out, and i had to look up tutorials for some of them
overall, fallout 2 is good and i suggest playing it if you loved fallout 1, but don't expect a better experience
It may be hard to run on new systems and it often crashes but at least it works badly and you won't play without 1000 patches
Game doesn't hold your hand and provides only minimal tutorial, but compare to modern games, it's more comfortable. Once you leave starting village, you can travel to any location other than final main quest area. Underleveled and poorly equipped? You die, reload save and THINK! Turn-based combat lets to play in more relax manner and there are several "smart" and "technical" options, but don't invest too much into non-combat skills - violence is universal and frequently unavoidable solution.
