This game takes a lot of patience. Its the usual Japanese grave dig and localize effort from Kagura... which is mostly a good thing. The text resolution is unreadable. They pull a bait and switch in the first 2 minutes... not all the characters they advertise are playable. The last straw for me is no gamepad support... it does otherwise run on Steam Deck.
Despite all this... it looks like a good game, for someone with a lot more patience.
Was getting this since I miss the old Elona shooter game. This was published on DL in 2014 and it took 10 years to get published on Steam, but they kept the old resolution (4:3), which is a major drawback. Gameplay and story wise it's okay. Game is easy as well.
Would recommend if there was a remaster
If you like this game you are going to love magnificent kingdom from the same dev and argueably a masterpiece in comparison. Tried this new one for a couple hours and sadly I cannot recommend it having played the first game. Somehow this game just lacks a professional finish. Hope this helps.
Unplayable due to Weird resolution. You can only play in one really weird 16:9 and one really weird 4:3 and windowed is so little that its unplayable. Refunded 100%
17 girls. A lot of scenes. Each girl has 2 brothel work poses which can be unlocked by playing naturally. You can also unlock the same 2 poses in which the narrative is about she doing with the player. This requires increasing bond with her and is the negative side of the game. A lot of grinding, 17 girls, 4 at a time. I know, rewards only come from hard work, but this is a bit too much.
You can rush the main story and illustrations in 4 hours. But unlocking all requires another 8 hours.
I still like the game. It has beautiful illustrations and a fresh air from the common turn-based RPG gameplay.
With all due respect to the creators of this game , i don't want to recommend it.
But giving it a negative review just because it's shit compared to the prequel seems a bit mean.
I'm having fun playing it in the end , even if it extremely disappointed me.
Ok, the game isn't that good as Magnificent Kingdom but still good enough to be enjoyable.
You are defending a wall. Can control only one character in the party and the other three are AI controlled, can't switch to them during the battle. Archers/Gunners on the wall, Melee on the field. Enemies try to destroy the wall and you shoot them while melee distacts them. Main character carries 5 weapons (so can switch between melee and ranged if you want), other three characters have only 1 which defines where they will be positioned for the duration of the battle.
City development isn't that large as in Magnificent Kingdom - you can invest in gaining free space in each of the several districts and then spend that free space to gain some bonuses which depend on the district (gold income, max ammo during the battle, wall hp, etc).
Character customization is simplier as you can't select skills that you want like you could in Magnificent Kingdom.
Weapon customization is simplier too. You can't transfer traits between weapons like in Magnificent Kingdom and make an op combination of them, you just invest gold into upgrading weapon stats. So you choose one of the the two weapon types depending on your main stat (bows or guns) and then choose one of the 5 bonuses that you want to use (split ammo, piercing, stun, explosive or automatic fire) and keep upgrading it until it's super strong. For melee you don't even have to choose anything, just upgrade any sword or spear you like.
Story is pretty short. I completed it on Normal in about 5 hours. But there are two more difficulty levels which have different amount of enemies on the field (most likely with better stats too) and a special infinite level unlocks in post game where you need to switch teams before each wave (but you can equip them with the same weapons so only special skills change).
Overall the game is worth playing if you want a little more of something like How to Build a Magnificent Kingdom.
Sorry, I can't recommend this one, very old engine makes it almost unplayable, using the default full screen breaks the sound (using Lossless Scaling doesn't help), can't minimize the game window to task bar and the game window is always on top of other windows.
It is also not fun at all.
Going to get a refund.
Note: For those unaware (and there seems to be quite a few people who don't know this) "How to Build a Flying City" is actually the first game and "How to Build a Magnificent Kingdom" is the 3rd game, this is why the two games that are getting compared seem so different.
These games just got released in reverse order which means "How to Build a Flying City" is
Irisfield's oldest work not new at all.
