i own this on the gameboy advance, beat when i was a jit, replayed it on here. still awesome a decade later
I was craving a simple beat 'em up and the colorful retro graphics of Gekido caught my eye. I have to say I sure am glad it wasn't more expensive as I frankly hate this game. The stages and enemies were designed to make every death feel incredibly cheap and infuriating. Every trap is guaranteed to hit until you know their exact placement ahead of time, and even then it's a toss as they appear just off the screen so you often can not be precise enough. Both the enemy AI and your own combos tend to place you overlapping an enemy sprite, rendering you incapable of striking that specific enemy regardless of the direction you're facing, while the said enemy has no issue striking you. The jumps are imprecise and will leave you wondering whether you should keep trying or if the gap really is just too big. The hit boxes on some objects make absolutely no sense (a falling rock will hurt you even though it misses by a half an inch on the screen), and the game even has a habit of forgetting to let you move after you clear the screen of all enemies making you restart the stage. Do yourself a favor and replay Streets of Rage 4 instead if you need a simple but properly made game.
A classic Zombie beat em up from the 90s. Compared to games these days its not that good but in the 90s it was far ahead of its time. U can play it coop and beat the ****** out of the Zombies. There r also a few bossfights and ur lives r limited.
Not the easiest game but still fun to play
Nice 2d game
Gekido Kintaro's Revenge is an okay Beat 'em up game, so it’s time for the story.
After stopping the evil Kintaro, our hero Tetsuo returns to his sensei's house were all is quiet for a year. But soon his sensei feels a dark, ominous and evil presence returning, he sends Tetsuo to a faraway farming village outside the city to see what it is.
Now let’s talk about the likes. The game play was simple, but fun. Some of the enemies were cool looking. Game was not too hard and the cutscenes were nice to look at. Survive mode in the game was okay.
The soundtrack was very good and the Pixel art was all so good, I all so really liked that you can make the game’s screen full size and tv mode witch helped make the game clear.
Now let’s talk about what’s not to like about the game. Well you see this game is a sequel to a game called Gekido: Urban Fighters and I looked and it’s not on steam, so it bugs me that the sequel’s on here, but not the first game.
And with this game being the sequel, there are some character stories you don’t know about.
Then there is the dog enemy witch can be very annoying, because you can’t attack them but they can attack you. And all so there traps in the game can be a pain especially since the enemies can’t get hurt by them. And lastly the game ends on a cliffhanger.
So with that all said Gekido Kintaro's Revenge is an okay Beat 'em up game, so if you’re looking for a simple Beat 'em up game this one is for you.
[EDITED]
After playing this game more I had stop recommending it.
On one hand I was happy to see Gekido back! The first game was fun and a gem of the side scrolling beat 'em up world! Please NAPS Team bring something more similar to the old Urban Fighter back! On the other hand, this becomes too repetitive after a while, even for this genre. Moreover, it suddenly becomes too much of a platformer.
PROS:
- Those sick art concepts are back!
CONS:
- Even the BGMs are too repetitive and pervasive.
- Weird commands.
- Way too many platformer elements for a beat 'em up!
FINAL SCORE:
5.0 / 10.
Great fighter, just needs a bit of love from the creators and a little fine tuning to become truly great.
I only played a little, but it'd be tough to recommend if it wasn't for the fact that I'm just happy to see a feature heavy beat em up. I tend to grab these cause it's something I can local coop without too much hassle. All I did was treasure hunter, and it was hilariously difficult. You get hit and knocked down as soon as you enter an area, and seeing your friends flip out about it is just a great time. The controls are god awful, but you can fix that pretty easily even if you're mixing and matching controllers... which is really nice. Still, just adds to your friends frustration. Will probably remap the controls at some point and give a go at the story, but it plays like you would hope as far as beat em ups go. The random generation probably could use some work but it's just all around a decent beat em up, even if it requires a minute to get used to. I'm sure a lot of people may get upset with it early on because there is certainly things about it that, at least, seem odd, but I can tell it's just a solid fun release... Especially, on sale. I died a few times just laughing.
Where Gekido heads out on its own is with its adventure-style level designs.
Instead of just walking to the right until there's no more right to be walked,
you can go left, right, up, and down, flipping switches, collecting items, and doing a fair amount of backtracking.
It's definitely refreshing to see Gekido take some chances with the formula of a genre bound by tradition,
but it now also has a fun arcade mode similar to games like Final Fight or Street of Rage , where you just turn off your mind, go ahead and beat them all through different stages and bosses !
Co-op mode works really fine everytime and I loved the new Relic-hunter 'rougue-like' mode, simply perfect if you also have a friend to play with.
I was waiting for a game like this since a long time
