Don’t let this distract you from the fact that Hector is going to be running three Honda civics with spoon engines, and on top of that, he just went into Harry’s and bought three t66 turbos with nos, and a motec exhaust system.
Played through the original Mafia from when it was released 2002 until today multiple times, one of my favourites of all time but sometimes very difficult game.
The Remaster almost lives up to the original and takes away some of the difficult moments, replacing it with some others :-)
Technical: Playing with Proton on Manjaro Gnome, I had to follow this protondb report: https://www.protondb.com/app/1030840#pQnH9z74DS
Other than that, game run just perfect start to End.
One funny thing I remember, not sure if this is related to running the game with Proton or something else
In the race mission during returning the tinkered car to the race track short before leaving the city there is a police car flying towards me from somewhere crashing on the road. It looks like it's thrown towards me from the sky. That actually happened both times I played this mission in the same location.
Mafia: Definitive Edition is a fantastic remake that brings the classic story of Tommy Angelo to life with stunning visuals and an immersive atmosphere. The game is a bit short, but it makes up for it with solid gameplay, and the updated mechanics make it feel modern, while still staying true to the original. A great experience for fans of the series!
Rating: ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐
This is undoubtedly the best story-driven game I’ve played in quite some time. It captivated me from start to finish, maintaining my engagement throughout the entire 10+ hours it took to complete.
It's an enjoyable game that can feel like you're watching a movie. I've played it on PlayStation and XBOX, now give it a go on PC.
Mafia: An All-Time Favorite Classic
Mafia, whether it's the iconic video game series or the timeless party game, holds a special place in the hearts of enthusiasts across generations. Its brilliance lies in its ability to immerse players in a web of intrigue, strategy, and emotional depth, making it a masterpiece that continues to captivate fans.
A Gripping Storyline
For the video game series, Mafia sets itself apart with its compelling narratives, often focusing on the rise and fall of protagonists caught in the gritty underbelly of organized crime. The first game, Mafia: The City of Lost Heaven, remains legendary for its cinematic storytelling, rich character development, and emotional weight. Subsequent titles, like Mafia II and Mafia III, expanded on this legacy with more complex worlds, diverse characters, and moral dilemmas.
Atmosphere and Immersion
Mafia's charm is amplified by its ability to transport players to meticulously crafted settings, from the Prohibition-era streets of Lost Heaven to the post-war vibes of Empire Bay. The attention to detail period accurate vehicles, music, and architecture, creates an atmosphere so immersive that you feel like you've stepped into another era.
Engaging Gameplay
While the video game series is known for its mix of open-world exploration and mission-based storytelling, the party game Mafia thrives on its simplicity and psychological depth. The rules are straightforward, yet the gameplay is endlessly variable, requiring players to bluff, strategize, and collaborate. The thrill of uncovering the hidden Mafia members or successfully deceiving others as one keeps players on edge.
A Cultural Phenomenon
Mafia isn’t just a game; it's a cultural staple. The party version has brought together countless friends and families, sparking heated debates and unforgettable memories. Similarly, the video game franchise has inspired a loyal fan base, with players reminiscing about epic plot twists, challenging missions, and emotional endings.
Why It’s an All-Time Favorite
Mafia's enduring appeal lies in its balance of storytelling, strategy, and emotional engagement. It’s not just a game,it’s an experience. Whether you’re unraveling a complex plot or trying to outwit your friends in a party setting, Mafia delivers unparalleled satisfaction every time.
For those who haven’t yet delved into the world of Mafia, it’s more than a recommendation:-it’s a must. Whether as a video game or a social activity, Mafia stands as a testament to the power of storytelling, strategy and human connection.
I used to play the original in wine on Linux and it was a great game. This remake looks incredible. Works well on FreeBSD 14.2 with Mizuma.
Игра проходится за 8 часов более-менее средним игроком, который умеет стрелять и думать. Я думать не умею, но как-то прошёл за 8 часов. Мне понравилось.
Absolutely incredible storytelling from start to finish. Must-play with the updated graphics + gameplay despite a few weird quirks of the era.
This game is a mustplay, such amazing graphics, such an amazing storyline and the ending makes me emotional. I loved it!!!
Mafia: Definitive Edition is a must-try game if you like action adventures.
Graphics:
7.5/10, beautiful, polished and improved graphics compared to the original gameSound:
7/10, nothing to report particularly negative or positive, the sound is there and does what you expectPlot:
7.5/10. It is a sequence of missions, they are pleasant and nothing negative to report.Ending (spoiler-free):
6.5/10. Rather obvious how it could have ended, there is no big surprise. Epilogue not too long, it can be said that it does not disfigure but remains just above sufficiency.Difficulty level:
4.5/10 (played on normal level): the game is not difficult, we are not facing a souls-like, it is not focused only on combat (which however remains an important part of the missions). You can't fail missions, and you can't really die because you can always reload the last checkpoint, you won't be frustrated playing it.Interactions:
N/A. There are no interactive dialogues, everything is pre-determined.Combat:
6.5/10. They are not the main part of the game, in the long run they are easy because the AI of the opponents is not really dangerous. You just have to figure out how to use a cover, when you can shoot, and when to stay hidden behind it. All in all, it is pleasant, but you don't expect great tactics from your opponents.Longevity:
12 hours (approximately), it could have been slightly longer, but I think it is satisfactory.Playability:
7/10 Getting around the city is interesting, it's not as boring as it might seem, and driving cars from the 30s is something different than usual. The foot part reserves both fights with firearms (pistols, machine guns or rifles) and with Molotov cocktails or grenades (rarely) as well as stealth parts. The whole thing is pleasant, it could have been better but also worse, so I'm not complaining too much.Game Rating:
7.5/10 A well-made game that is worth playing, both for the setting and for the story. Too bad for the fights, pleasant but could have been better. The ending could have surprised but instead it is quite classic.I recommend playing this game: YES if you like action/adventure; NO if you just want to shoot with fast-paced games.
Never played this game growing up! And I am glad I didn't because the way I was able to understand and enjoy the story was truly amazing! A game that is decades old being able to catch my interest the whole through proves that gaming teams can create timeless masterpieces! The ending made me put the controller down and just think about how much I genuinely enjoyed this game. And with the remaster giving the graphical upgrade made everything much better! Looking forward to playing Mafia II, and eventually Mafia The Old Country!
Played on Classic difficulty. not super hard. a lot of cut scenes. Good story. Extremely Beautiful graphics.
GG ez , good remaster, some bugs here and there but nothing that bothers too much the player
Game #51 of My Backlog Clearing Journey
Status: Completed
I wasn’t expecting such a good game—it really surprised me! People had told me about it before, but I didn’t pay much attention. Recently, I watched The Godfather movies and decided to give this game a try, and it was the best decision I made. The game is absolutely stunning in terms of graphics and music. It truly feels like being in a mafia movie, just like The Godfather, but in a playable version.
The original was like the Christmas dinner your grandma prepared in your childhood, this one is like the microwaved food your wife is trying to pass as homemade... I am not going to fault the developers, it is the way of all remakes. It very hard to compete with a good memory. Got it at a discount and it is well worth the 8 euros I paid, but I would not recommend it at full price.
Take a lesson, game developers. This is what you should strive for.
PROS:
- The devs used a very underused theme. It's nice seeing something different.
- It has a great story and in-depth character development.
- Nice weapon selection. Combat flows pretty well.
- Amazing graphics and sound. The environments are top notch.
CONS: (only one!)
- Vehicle handling is absolutely AWFUL in this game. I guess I can't really knock it for this, since it's trying to replicate how cars were roughly ninety years ago, but suffice to say, don't expect the driving to be easy. Even simply turning a corner is a pain in these heaps.
PERFECTION!
I really love Mafia trilogy and can't wait for Mafia The Old Country 2025.
I've played all of them.
Mafia
Mafia II (Classic)
Mafia II Definitive Edition
Mafia III Definitive Edition
and finally Mafia Definitive Edition 10/10
I highly recommend you to play the trilogy if you haven't.
Heisen
It's a proper remake, high attention to details and enhancing some of the stuff that wasn't there in the first place. You'll drive some, shoot some and try to survive in Lost Heaven.
i just finished this game within 10 hours. it's short. the main storyline is linear hidden in a open world. There is nothing to much in the open world, so i just strictly played the storyline and didn't bother doing collection.
No 1 reason that i didn't bother doing the collectibles is that this very unoptimized port. I had to look a fix on the internet on how to boot it up (It freezes at the start screen). Then it makes my CPU run hot. eventhough i have very great cooling system. ( I discovered that it keeps maximizing my cpu usage leading to hot CPU).
The technical issue leads me to play this game one mission at the time and close the game after the mission.
Still with all the technical challenges mentioned above, i managed to finish the main game. the graphics are nice, the shooting and level structure is fun enough to overlook the technical issue. If you really want to play this game, i suggest to play this game on console for less hassle of searching the fixes to the various issue of this PC port
P.S. I had an easy time with the racing so i don't understand why people are frustrated in that mission LOL
Short campaign but awesome gameplay.
A great game to try. Great graphics, great atmosphere and gameplay.
Probably the main problem of this game is that it uses technical basis and assets from Mafia III, which means you have enemies who hit you with almost 100% accuracy whilst your character is skinny. The weirdest thing was seeing Tommy carry Thompson or Shotgun with one hand just like Clay, which seems a little illogical given that Clay is a big Afro-American who served in the military while Tommy is a skinny cabby who happened to join mafia.
But overall, its a great game. It respects the original, but has certain things of its own.
(SPOILER ALERT)
Take the soundtrack for example. The main of the score of the game "As Good a Place as Any to Start" takes the beginning of the main theme and adds its own elements. The track "Under New Stars" that plays during the final scene uses elements of the main theme of Mafia II when Vito and Joe show up to kill Tommy.
Well it makes fun but it is full of bugs. First to get the game started you need to delete and tweak some launcher which comes with the download automatically, then start it in window mode which you find out just by searching the net for bugs. WTF! After such a long time one would asume they would have fixed this by now. Then randomly in the game you might get stuck from time to time because of a known bug and so on. Missions are easy up to well some which seemed to be tweaked for this edition to be extra hard or complicated for no reason other than well whatever. Graphics are good but funniliy not too overly good, yet the game uses power or your rig more than even the best actual games. It can overheat your board so be careful.
this game is so fucking good, graphics are 10/10 , storyline is 10/10 and the voice acting and dialogue was amazing. Felt like I was watching a movie during the scenes.
A classic story with a new look. Watch it on the YouTube.
Everything about the aesthetics of the remake looks great. But everything else is cheap, clunky and buggy. The gameplay is painful, the classic difficulty is broken, the racing mission is still a joke.
hangar 13 should not be allowed to touch game development anymore. mafia 3 was a disgrace and here some goddamn clown decided that it's a cool idea to replace the game's theme music with fucking rap in the end credits.
Fantastic cutscenes, beautiful characters, now when driving, they really took the time to make these cars right, the manual option in classic mode really feels like it, I think back in the 1930s, they had 3 gears. Lol not the standard 5 gears, so when changing gears, second and third gear feel way faster than one. Now nothing is perfect, especially the lighting and textures of video games during the day feel awkward to me, NPCs in some places act like statues, just standing there or sitting near the restaurant looking stupid, the game restarts itself in some situations, but maybe because I pre-ordered, not sure. Overall, I like linearly driven open world stories, reading collectibles and such, games like Witcher 3 are an example among others, forget online PVP, explore the open world, learn something, spend hours doing something different, not repetitive, I like linear open world experiences. Conclusion, a must buy for adults, not kids, I recommend playing in classic mode to give yourself a challenge, don't be afraid to die often, manual settings, aim assist should be turned off, and immerse yourself in 1930s America.
I remember playing the original version back in the day.
Even then the story, graphics, gameplay and immersion was top-notch for its time.
But this! THIS! Is a freaking work of art!
Great game ! Like back in 2002 with better graphics and improvement!!! Thank you and highly recommend !
Thank you for making this one again back! Great remastered piece from past!
20 years ago we touched each other for the first time..
good remake. if your´e looking for an authentic mafia game with emotional story then buy it on sale
the city is alive with its accidents and demonstrations
car and ragdoll physics are superb. shooting is also satisfying
the race in classic difficulty will bring tears to your eyes then and now
in rare cases, you'll need to reload the checkpoint, but the sections to replay are short. i'm not aware of any other bugs
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NQDUX3GL96c
The story is good, the action is nice. But the open world is pretty much useless.
Story is very good, the rest is average. But i would recommend it on sale.
Just a fair warning the optimization is horrible.
I played the original version when it came out. I was a small kid back then. Lots of great memories. I didn't play the campaign back then, enjoyed the free roam. But now, It's an awesome experience to play trough the story.
Good game! The story is very interesting. The graphics are also are very realistic.
This game is a master peace. Humble beginnings to a happened encounter that changed Tonys life forever. Story plot 10/10, Action 10/10, Romance 10/10. this game makes you feel human again.
Great game, i love the overhaul and the Mafia story, brings me back to the PS2 days. The story is great, character development is fantastic and mature, i still remember the characters, especially the 'don' even 2 years after i completed it. Mafia 2 and this remake are just stellar games for a mature audience. If you wanted a good mafia game, this is it.
The racing mission still haunts me to this day..
☑ Cool and interesting storyline
☑ Modern and nice graphics
☑ Fun and intense gameplay
10/10
This is one of those scenarios where I wish there was a middle thumb option for games on Steam. While I enjoyed the game, it definitely feels very bare bones. You basically just go from one mission to the next with no gap in between. There's no side missions, or really any activities for you to do. There is a Free Roam mode that you can go into, but there's not much to it. It's a short game, and if you enjoy the Mafia games it's worth getting.
The vibe is great, driving is spectacular (except for that cursed racing mission), shooting and motion animations are mid, story can't be more good. absolute 9.9/10.
I never played the original, but I really enjoyed this. I liked the story from start to finish.
Mafia: Definitive Edition is one of the best games that I have ever played. While the gameplay is nothing too special, with standard shooter mechanics, the story is amazing. The game truly feels like a movie, and is one of the few games to truly make me feel emotion for some of the characters. Also, while graphics aren't everything, the graphics of the game are very well created as well and help to bring its setting to life. If you are looking for a great story, this game is for you.
To start off — I've never played the original Mafia, so this is an opinion of a newcomer here.
Firstly, about the praised (positive steam reviews) story in this game. I've heard many times that the original had a great story, and here, the remake retains the main points. Most events feel justified, but some parts have been cut or reworked to make the story feel more “Hollywood-esque,” which causes it to lose some of its depth.
Tommy Angelo, the protagonist, feels like another Mary Sue. He’s the best driver, the best shooter, and somehow survives everything thrown at him. He’s responsible for killing hundreds of people, but shows real emotion or guilt only once every 6–7 missions. At one point, he’s horrified by the death of innocent people, but shortly after, he’s back to mowing down cops and anyone else in his way. I really sympathize with this character, I do. I sure don't want to see him paying off for all the atrocities he's done, don't want to see him killed because of all of the funerals he's arranged by his doings. I really like Tommy Angelo, it's literally me! I think you got general feeling.
Moving to mechanics. The gameplay is fine, but unremarkable. Shooting feels just okay — good enough to get through the story without much frustration. Driving is enjoyable overall, but the infamous race mission is &@#!. Idk why anyone would've thought adding a race with around-realistic handling will be fun. I've tried it nearly 20 times on Hard difficulty, screwed it and beat on the first try after switching to Easy. I don't see any point why it should be in this game, why it shouldn't be more casual, Tommy is not a goddamn Dominic Toretto.
The visual and environments are the things you can praise Hangar 13 in this remake for. It really feels great to ride on the streets of United States in the thirties of the past century, to hear and see all of this news that were relevant there (newspapers, radio), Music, outfits, general feeling — amazing.
To conclude and TL;DR: I rather do not like this game. I've played a lot of different actions and this one, though having a story with solid foundation, fails to evoke any complex emotions in me. The only good part is after completing this remake I want to try the original after a couple of years, when the memories of story will wear off.
its like gta 5 if the story was better and the story was linear.
Backlog #3
Story finished.
Game is amazing. Don't wanna spoil anything. Just get it on sale and experience it.
My favourite game as a child...
Everything is great here... even after so much time. And I am very glad that the game turned out to be even better, more beautiful, more emotional and remained just as cool and memorable.
The game has some black screen when loading up. Once you're in the game you can't alt tab because if you do you have to restart your game and then maybe you'll get back in the game if the black screen isn't there.
The game pulled me right into its gripping mob story, even as a newcomer. The stunning visuals, intense drama, and a beautifully reimagined Lost Heaven made it feel fresh yet timeless. It’s classic gangster storytelling at its best and somehow the remaster of this game is way better than the remaster of Mafia 2. 9/10, a must-play for crime drama fans.
1. Play this game if you like Crime stories and are GTA-like game Fans.
2. The moral of the story is good but this game can be skipped if you aren't into this sorf-of genre or type of games.
3. I think the game doesn't have any side quest and focus most of it on the story and some car driving( which can also be skiped)
4. This game takes less than 12 hours to complete if you skip everything else and only focus on the Story on medium difficulty.
5. Actually, I am not into this sort-of game but wanted to try something different and because of Steam Sales thus for me this game was 6.5/10.
Mafia: Definitive Edition is an action-adventure game and a full remake of the 2002 classic. Developed by Hangar 13 and released in 2020, it transports players to Lost Heaven, a fictional city inspired by the 1930s.
Gameplay
Players control Tommy Angelo, a former taxi driver drawn into organized crime. The gameplay mixes shooting, exploration, and narrative-driven missions. The controls are modernized while preserving the classic feel.
Visuals and Atmosphere
Enhanced visuals provide a cinematic experience, with a richly detailed city and an authentic Great Depression-era vibe. The jazz and orchestral soundtrack heighten immersion.
Story
The story follows Tommy's rise from an ordinary worker to a member of the Salieri crime family. Strong writing, voice acting, and emotional depth make the narrative a standout.
Conclusion
Mafia: Definitive Edition is perfect for fans of crime dramas and narrative-focused games. Though its mission structure is linear, the overall experience is rewarding.
Score: 8.5/10
Recommended for players who love immersive storytelling and the classic 1930s American atmosphere.
A story about the highs and lows of the criminal life in an Italian suburb with classy suits and (fancy) old cars. It is a relatively short game, you might clear the story in a day or two. There are also several collectibles that you can find scattered around the city.
Unfortunately, the ending felt rushed. There was a lot of tension built up in the final chapters but then the story suddenly concluded. I wouldn’t say that there are plot holes, it’s just that you wish they could have added a few more cutscenes at the end.
Nevertheless, I enjoyed playing it and I am looking forward to the other two Mafia games in the Trilogy.
